ROUND #171 :: Ti'phar of the Ararita
DESCRIPTION
Ti'phar of the Ararita
Thank you to Sorknes for this suggestion.
Ti’phar is the third wife of Tao’a’teh ruler of Ararita a small planet known for its civilizations artistic beauty, whether it is in architecture, sculpture, painting or general creativity. Ti’phar is determined to be more than a pretty consort for the king though: and she has become a force to be reckoned with in the political system of the planet, having established herself as Prime Minister, and rumours persist that the real power lies with her, rather than her husband. She has become the chief negotiating officer for inter-galaxy matters of state, and her upbringing though formal and staid, has been useful in diplomatic situations where tact and empathy have been important.
She sees no conflict with her two offices, that of Queen and central executive officer, and is a stickler for formality and custom, precise in her dress, and fashionable to a fault, following the strict rules of her planet’s customs; decorum always being a priority, which dictates modesty and elegance. She is proud, graceful and sophisticated, and above all clever.
Her species are known for their beautiful looks; humanoid, tall, thin with elegant refined features.
Open to interpretation, but stick to the description. They are humanoid, but you can elaborate on that to a degree within the limits of 'humanoid'.
------------
ACCEPTANCE TO POLL WILL BE BASED ON THREE CRITERIA:

Ok, here it goes...no way back anymore...this - is - IT!

~EDIT~
Caught a moment to elaborate why`s and why not`s - I`ve given myself the task to design a character that shows no attributes of standard female anatomy, and still looks feminine and graceful. Since the description states "long and thin figure", I associated it with a marine species that have this form, which enables them to move faster through water. Since they`re humanoid, and "probably" have to reproduce, yet have narrow hips due to their overall body form, amphibian was the most likely, logical choice. To accentuate the feminine part however, I added gills that follow the refined facial features, fuller lips (would not give up on that) and glowing, tentacle "hair".
Outfit - now that was a tough one. Since modesty and elegance were a way to go, I decided to use mild colors (sea foam) with metallic parts that have both esthetical and functional purpose (supports the fragile anatomy outside water enviroment). Details are toned down, to fit the overall description.
Illustration - Prime minister, a queen - lots of tasks for a gentle figure like Ti`Phar. That`s why I decided to portray her in a more "relaxed" edition, standing by a window and looking into the depths of her home world ocean. She IS posing, but I imagined this image as a portret of her personality as well - the face is stirn and somewhat cold, the leg is stretched out in a flirty way, but her hand is placed on her chest, as a sign of modesty and maybe even fear (?)
Bunch of jibberish, I know. I just like to hear the sound of my own voice :D

So, this is my first chow. . . . actually first any activity I've tried on here.
I learned for characters I definitely need to work on them bigger. . . my character was too small even though the canvas was large. . and a 1 pixel brush was too big at some points.
I'm not sure how it stands up, but I'm happy I managed to finish something (hope that's the case anyway! heh)
Also after doing it out of my head. . realized I need to remember what my teacher said in school. . Use references!

Last minute sketch. I keep it as simple as possible. I was worried about the "Modesty and elegance" bit, so i tried to contain myself.
When it comes to aliens, it really bothers me to pollute the concept with my "human" notions. How to achieve an outwordy, never-seen-before look? Aarrgh! CHOW is killing me!

I vote for Quinn Simoes And Wigger.
I knew I'll vote for Wigger's work before he finished it. The overall composition is very strong, and with an eye for detail. My only criticism is lighting, I'd expect much dramatic light and shadow, and I think adding some really dark areas would make the central figure (the queen) pop out more. Now everywhere seems to have the same value. Still strong composition and careful rendering get my vote~ good job!
I really like dwinbotp's work as well, she's a very well designed character. However, with all those flashy colors, she doesn't feels like an elegant queen, but rather a circus dancer.

Well this time I gave one vote, and my vote went for Wiggers.
Nice composition, very nice design, maybe the only thing I dont like too much is the colors, I have already told you that before, I think you use to much desaturated colors (especially in this one, it was supposed to be a civilisation known for its art ;))

PxelSlayer got my vote. Though there were a few close choices, that one stood out for me. Nice work.
Must admit it is a little depressing to put so much work into mine and get 0 votes.....again. What did I do wrong? Not alien enough perhaps, or maybe to much time spent on BG for a Chow? At this point I have no idea what direction I need to improve in.

Lol, yeah I know. I only mentioned it because from what I usually see in the challenges, the ones that pick up votes in the very beginning tend to run through with the most. Having no votes when others have over 20 is a bad sign. I also was not trying to moan by the way, I wanted genuine feedback from you guys so I can try to improve.

juts my brief comments, based on first impression. great work from everyone and feels invigorating doing these CHOWs... generally the things that bug me the most is the careless use of different appendages and limbs, must give it purpose and it pose great difficulty in posing the character in a manner described in the brief. also the balance was not there when aggressive weaponry or stands to give it royal air or power was chosen and foregone too much of the important character traits that the brief mention- "She has become the chief negotiating officer for inter-galaxy matters of state, and her upbringing though formal and staid, has been useful in diplomatic situations where tact and empathy have been important."
i guess same with a lot of previous CHOWs, brief and characteristic are sometime ignore to suit certain design, would rather see a CHOW that tries to interpret the brief while pushing the design, that process is what i enjoy reading, seeing most!
didnt make it to the poll, but would greatly appreciate any c&c!
Sidharth Chaturvedi: i think one of the thumbnail's pose works better than the final!
lkjhgfdsa: the pose is a bit too relax for me
Muscari: the head piece doesnt jive with the sleek suit
Matt Dixon: nice fingers
Pretty_Angel: knuckles seems to stick out as the one thing out
Prophet: probably a long background story for the mask, but doesnt show me what the brief ask for, her facial features. unless the rest of the body answer the brief enough that i dont need to see her face.
zimfin: posing issue, the hand gesture definite improvement over the old one.the texture doesnt seems to have "bump", more like body paint or tatoo?
Carnifex : nice set-up!
NickTrip : the base of the columns stick out as the odd thing out.
bullfrogg : some what tells the part of the story where the character is immaculate about her attire, but a more "finish" dress would better illustrate her other traits?
Ranarh : idea is there, just need to push it further with more reference of high-fashion models and refinement of pose.
Zaphid: difficult to pose a thin legged female humanoid alien in a very elegant, regal & dignified manner. very prelim stage of design, should push the design further with more studies on posture, shouldn't settle for this!
areve : the hair seems flat.
Saleem: the design works, but need to show more to see how she would pose. need better execution.
gerezon : almost voted, a more garden (palace) setting as oppose to current setting would give a different feel to the status of the character? the pet is a nice touch in here, part of the characterization!
NoShot : nice character design, the WIP with no toes seems to work better?
johannesblomgren : like the setting, in front of every successful women lies a man (shrouded in shadow) :P
electricbill : felt like careless design for an extra pair of arms, if a pair of arms is carrying something, the other would be freed up to make gesture that enhance the sense of elegance and other characteristic call forth by the brief?
Arthemis : great garment design!! but the cloth doesnt make the man, neither will it make the woman in a more alien being :P
Yamatani : work better as a queen for an exotic alien culture, but not so well for a culture of more refine taste?
leuparaleu : nice setting and character design, just need tweaking and fine tuning for a more alien feature
mivva : need to be more careful in the rendering and also the aggressive stands doesnt seems to complied with the brief, which suggest she prefer diplomatic solutions over direct confrontation.
blackmoondev : garment design fail to convey what the brief describes.
Elzora : actually your first thumb looks great, the final entry, i think tried too hard to "please" the brief and ended up having not getting the characteristic across strong enough. the background doesnt reflect a culture of refined taste...
Nephilie :aquatic features are fine, just re-check what the brief ask for in her facial features...
audit : her hands gesture and body language doesnt really exude a lot of confidence for someone her stature? could have been mistaken as a servant in the corner rather than a ruler that is shrouded in shadow and mystery. just goes to show that if you blocked out her facial features, her pose, gesture will be crucial and key in the characterization and narration.
scottmcd : accessories design, since you have a great garment concept that is slimy and leaves a "great trail" wherever she travels, the solid clanky accessories seems odd and out of place.
PxelSlayer : voted. fits the brief to a tee. actually didnt bother to read your description, cos your picture already tell a thousand words!!! my personal favourite for this round!!! only thing to nit pick would probably be the angle of her extended feet, 3 degrees less? :)
Giorge : texture of character not well design, throne/ seats also doesnt reflect the brief
dragonroseart : nice design, but would suggest using traditional medium, would definitely beat painting with a mouse, i know, i've tried :P
LeoListens : dont worry too much about precondeived notion, we all have, the intent of the brief to put alien is to allow certain freedom of expression or creativity, otherwise a humanoid cockroach could be thing of beauty in alien culture. really like the garment design, reminds me of issey miyake, which i used as reference for my chow :P
tonysaurus : finally, a 4 arm alien that has 4 of her arms posing and gesturing rather than hanging or dangling in the air!
Nutter : the hand trinkets steal the show! the shoulder rings doesnt seem to be the same design language as the trinkets (no where in the brief says she must wear matching pieces), but considering her taste, she would probably be very conscious about how her accessories match? looking at your earlier thumbs, i fine the first sketch's silhouette seems to convey more of the characters described in the brief that this loose robe covered figure.
ninyanernel : staring at and showing her large jewelry doesnt really quite convey the impression about the character that i'm getting from reading the brief.
dwinbotp : like her sleek look, just seems too busy and no single design element is coming across strong enough...
Windsrock : the looseness of the robes were tidy up some what, but she looks really uncomfortable in that neck piece..
Wiggers : my second favourite vote! nothing to add what others had mentioned.
Artofinca: suffering from the same problems with all other masked as well as additional limbs entries, extra hands doesnt add to the characterization, especially when we really need it to do so considering she's wearing a mask! or is there two humans under that robe? putting a mask on is not a cleaver design, in this CHOW anyway.
conceptbloke : facial expression somewhat a tad too agressive, considering the brief. other than that, the horn would have help in making her otherworldly, but not in that design.
Verehin : use the Gekko bots design in Metal Gear Solid 4 for posing reference, her legs and body would not be in that position, if that's her physical shape. fall under the purview of adding or modifiying limbs without considering the ramifications of elegance in posing...
Reymus : masked... and she's 3 months into pregnancy? actually good fabric folds, just the mid-section that spoils it... from the thumbs, she seems to work just fine without the veil.
klortho : fun character, but again, not the same character described in the brief. i'm sure she's modest and elegant and all in her alien culture :P
dreh_meister : facial anatomy seems a bit flat and also some symetry issues there...
Quinn Simoes : another one that i almost voted, but had to confine to 3 votes...
missconstruction nothing to add than what've mentioned earlier...
westoon : the veil is neither enforcing her concubine status nor is it giving her any extra sense of mystery since her eyes look a bit sad... maybe better to do away with the veil?
GennyWood : like the design of the "rack" :P tells a lot about the aesthetic and fashion sense of the character
Sorknes : hands on hips will have to be considered with the rest of the posing, the weight is resting on which sides of the hip?
witek : the thumbs looks so promising! fail on execution and also reference, i mean, she's not feminine... !!!
elmasfeo : i think the facial expression and feature will need a bit more revisiting of the brief, especially the nose...
ABCD : the ears could've been a good facial feature to plays with, the fingers however looks like they've just recovered from an allergy... use reference when unsure, your rendering of her face suggest you can do much better than that with the fingers!
Alex Boy : like the pose, facial expression and glowing hair thing! dont like the messy hair (too casual for interplanetary negotiation), and the not so body fitting gloves that's giving her a "mama's arm"
alive : four characters, for another CHOW perhaps? not this CHOW, none of it fits the slightest of the brief, apart from she is humanoid.
Mike D : too worrier like and not enough negotiator, highest governing authority.
Kvick : the thumbs work much better, the choice of her clothing doesnt seems to suggest that she's a person that carefully dress herself and not just sling on loads of accessories? she's proud of her body and elegance and would chose dress that allow her to express that grace in her stride??
the smaller thumbs within the thumbs actually works better as a pose with her legs together, and the earlier thumbs where there's less confusing shapes to distract the fact that she's standing proudly and her chest and chin up!
Isonade : wow, eyes drawn immediately to the legs and drapery, really well rendered and the lighting is nice too, too bad the facial feature couldnt continue with the same rigour and and finesse that the legs suggest... it's like looking at a nice back profile of a long hair lady, then she turns and suddenly you see she's actually a biker with mustaches... jokes aside, its such a weird alienly joy staring at your pic, with the head of the character cropped off by the screen, that is. with the head crop, she seems to suggest royal blue blood, like i'm staring at her kneeling and slowly moving my eyes upwards to take a peak at what her royal highness is contemplating before she gives me her instruction!!!... would have been my favourite... the blue background drapery is also weak compare to the rest of the pic.
benu : the heel could wrap up more towards her calf? in an alienly aesthetic way? would design a better skull to house the 5 eyes she having!!!
Ryan DeMita : bene gesserit or the ladies of the great houses rather than the fremen would have been a better reference, reading the brief again will leans towards them where they have less robe like drapery and more body fitting to allow her features to show through?
phew... hope i didnt miss out on anyone...

voted for nutter and pxelslayer,as these were the only ones that really caught that "young and elegant, but stern and willfull" feeling. nutter even moreso, with the inclusion of that little wristband...a really nice fashion detail.
thanks for votes on mine :)

Critiques in reverse order that they were posted.
James Wolf: I like the composition and flowing fabric. That fabric, though, should be finished more. Overall I like the color scheme, but it's too dark. Nice gesture and costume design. There's some interesting texture in the background, but I can't tell whatit is.
Demeta: It seems unfinished to me. For instance, her headdress appears to be a skull, but what's that on top of it? The gravelly looking horizon line doesn't work for me, and I think it should be higher unless the viewer's eyes are actually at her knee level. I like the arid, dry, desert quality - the color choice helps with that.
zenichi: The eyes are neat, and the little bit of warm color there works well. I'd give her more room at the bottom of the picture - she is hovering, right? On the figure and especially the clothes I think you could have done a better job defining the forms through lighting - I don't get a sense of solid mass. For example, you could deepen and define the shadow behind her head to give more depth. The glowing ball of light doesn't do much for me - I'd rather see an object of some sort there.
Benu: Nice pose and I like the glowing earth - the world in her hand. I'd like to see the whole thing a little brighter. The perspective of the room doesn't match the perspective of her or the chair. Fixing that would greatly improve the image. (Cool chair design, btw.) Her right upper arm seems too skinny compared with the forearm coming from it. I don't buy the high-heels - humans are the only species masochistic enough to do that to themselves. ;) (No, they're fine, actually.)
Isonade: Nice overall, and I really like the hand. I have two comments about the head. First, it's size doesn't seem to match that of the body. I know, she's an alien, but it doesn't seem biologically plausible. Second, you've done a gread job of using shading on the legs and arms to get a feel of form and mass. It's not there on the head. Stylistically it seems to belong to a different picture. I like the chair design and the draped fabric is nice too. Her shoes make me think she's a ballerina.
Kvick: This looks like a nice start, but as you said it was rushed. I'd have dropped the background totally and focused on the figure, shich still seems alittle blurry to me. She's also showing quite a bit of skin, which isn't in line with the brief. I'd love to see the dress fleshed out - that looks like a really neat design.
Mike D: Based on your WIPs, I'd suggest blocking out and arranging each of the main body masses and working that until you got more natural pose. She looks to me like she should be falling over forward. As for the rendering, I'd suggest deeper shadows around parts of the face and other skin areas to get more mass. I can't tell what shape her foot is. I like the costime design and think the belt buckle works really well.
Alive: Your CHoW entry should be just one image. You'll also get better comments that way. I don't think anyone else here did her as a warrior queen, like your first image. The suit is a little too form fitting given the brief. I kind of like the costume and pose of the last image as well. The headgear, though, invites comparison to Galactus. I'd recommend the Critique center for more substantive feedback.
Alex Boy: The first thing I notice is that the shoulders and hair have shading and mass that the rest of the costume lacks. The second thing I notice is that her eyes aren't on the same line on her skull. The left eye should come down some. I like the pose. I also like the drawing style of the dress - it would be neat to see the whole thing done that way.
More later.

Really good round, voting is pretty tough. I love Nutter and Quinn's entries. Both really convey the concept to me. Its really great to see so many people participate in here.
Zenichi- Thanks for taking the time to crit. I completely agree, I was focused on making her dress seem elaborate and strayed way too far from brief as you mentioned. Oh well.. fun round though. Hope to see you in this weeks round.
Scottmcd- Its pretty unfinished but I told myself I was going to submit what I had for feedback. The garbage above her head is what you call neglect :) I've put a few steady hours into it since poll and will eventually put it up on my sketchbook. Thanks for the feedback!

ABCD-Clover: What's in the background is the same basic color and value as her skin. If she's the focus, there's got to be contrast there. I like her hair ornamentation and her expression.
elmasfeo: I like the sense of mass and depth on the lower part where she contacts the ground. I like the overall style as well. I think you totally missed the brief on the beautiful aspect. Sure, alien standards are different, but something about it should appeal to the viewer too. Mor than anything else I think it's the facial expression. Why is her right arm in that position - was a bird to be perched on it? Resting on something?
Witek: Even in a slim human woman the hips would be at least as wide as the shoulders if not wider. I like the base and the draped ribbons with characters. Check out Bridgman or Hogarth for ways the body masses fit together. If the weight is on the left leg (the one behind), then that hip should be higher than the other one. While I find the head and mask (?) intriguing, I think it needs more work and definition. I think grace and elegance is in reach for the figure, but I'm not sure the head design is working for you there.
Sorknes: Nice topic. :) I like the costume design, and it seems as if you've put more work into that than into the figure itself. The right hand and forearm foreshortening doesn't really work. There's a good feel of volume and wrapping around for the cables over the skirt, but not that same sense of 3D in the skirt itself. The headgear and thing behind her area great, though I'm not clear on how that thing is attached to her. There's a clear tilt to the pelvis, but the shoulders are perfectly level. A small tilt to the torso would help, I think. I also think it would help to have her looking at the cool holo-display. A final comment - her colors are mostly warm while the background colors are cool. Don't overdo it, but include some of the background colors on the figure - it'll help her fit into the environment better. It would be good to see some glowing reflection from the hologram, too. I hope this doesn't seem overly critical - I quite like the picture and think it wouldn't take a lot of effort from this point to make it look even better.
GennyWood: I think you hit the brief quite nicely. I see someone who is beautiful and elegant but also calculating and, if need be, cut-throat enough to make it to Prime Minister. My main contstructive comments relate to color. There's not enough variation of values - take it to greyscale and you'll see that mostly everything blends together. Also, you're not going for a flat look, so I think more variation in saturation would help too. Since you're using cool colors, a pale warm color for the background would be more effective than white. I like the fabric and drapery, and the collar/frame for her head is nice. I particularly like that it's not symmetrical. I'm vaguely worried about how it's attached to her back there, but not too worried about it. :)
westoon: I liked the progress I was seeing in the other thread on this one, but no pointer to that thread here. :( The image still seems a little fuzzy overall - I'm sure more time would have been helpful. I like the medieval feel to the hairstyle and costume. Notice the curve of the shoulder. Rather than being straight the neck should curve into it so that you had an inverted S from the ear to the sleeve - it would be a nice rhythm there. Great collar. I really like the hands and the fact that they're interacting with each other. I also like the fact that the couch cushion is bent under her weight. Maybe that indentation could be taken out a little further. Nice beams of light, and good highlight on the shoulder. I'd like to see it also on theneck and the hair. If you don't mind, how did you execute the beams of light? Paths?
Missconstruction: I'm not sure I quite get what you were going for. There's a story in her posture, but we don't see what's going on. Maybe a map on the table for her to be poring over? I think some figure reference might help - the head position compared to the shoulder is off. I find the arm ornaments intriguing.
Again, more later...

Kept meaning to get back to this, but since the thread seems to have died I'll skip it. If you'd like a critique, though, just drop me a line and I'd be happy to oblige.

My vote went to Wiggers. Your interpretation was spot on. Looking at it, the piece just screamed the character. Also beautifully painted and composed, the piece really looks like it could be a trading card. Which brings up a thought, I know that backgrounds are not necessary but this piece illustrates how much the context of the character can define his/her personality. Nice!
Prophet-In terms of what I like to look at and weirdness your entry was the coolest.
Isonade-Your rendered the hell out of her legs, meaning beautiful...and that chair...very, very nice.
Electricbill-Again with the legs, that jumpsuit looks photorealistic. Excellent work.
Excellent work everyone!

I guess this will be zero round for me. Next time when I participate I hope I'll do better. Still not comfortable with digital when doing whole process with it.
It' dosen't help to be bellow the most likely winner of the round ;P

PLEASE DON'T VOTE FOR YOURSELVES, PEOPLE.
Seriously. It means I have to delete votes, and I would rather avoid the unnecessary work.
