117 Napoleonic Naval Battle CHOW crossover
Brief:
Marine Battle in the time of the Napoleonic wars,
required elements
Battle,
Ships
Ocean
possible reference Materials include: Hornblower novels (Forrester_ Captain and Commander or all the novels of Patrick O Brian.
The ships should be researched. and any one who makes the flag on the mast fly the wrong way will be summarily eliminated from polling.
Fantasy elements are acceptable as long as the time period is clear. Your entry can be combined with your CHOW entry, in that if you can include the character as part of the scene that will be fine. you All Chow and Eow rules still Apply.
B]TWO WEEK EOW/CHOW[/B]
For the next two weeks we're running a cross over with CHOW, featuring a brave naval hero in an epic sea battle.
You have three options with this contest:
a) Do a more illustrative piece and combine chow & eow and meet the requirements for both contests in one image (a battle on a quarter deck, for example)
b) do two illustrations seperately, one with a naval battle, and one just with the hero,
CHOW link here http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=166407
or c) only do one of the two - you don't really need to do both, but it'll be more fun!
DUE August31st 2009 yes you get 2 weeks
and we're off again!

ladies and gentlemen of EOW, this is an exciting opportunity to do some research and work out imagined scenes in an historical time period. the point is to make something with in these parameters, not to stretch the boundaries until they no longer are recognizable. When I say that one of the requirements it to follow the brief..I mean it.

August 17th, 2009, 01:50 AM
Excellent!
Just EOW for me though. Too many ships to paint, no time for heroes. :)
Ehhh... which way is the wrong way for flags to point then?

think about it..... these are sailing ships

August 17th, 2009, 03:40 AM
they point forward when the ships sail forwards :P

August 17th, 2009, 07:26 AM
What about an angelic navy? kept with the ships and outfits of the time period but made to look "holy" and maybe sailing a top the edge of a rolling storm front? Or battling a demonic presence a top a hurricane. whould that be acceptable?
chaosrocks
August 17th, 2009, 11:12 AM
nope
read the brief. "ocean"
I think you aren't getting the point. research and time period. don't make it more complicated than it is.
that is a very cool idea, but not for this challenge. you should do it as aporfolio piece could be very dramatic

This could fit in nicely as a study for an oil painting I am supposed to be doing.
Nice cross-over.

This seems intimidating and intriguing at the same time. On a side note, there's this really great documentary of Napoleon from PBS I saw recently. Doesn't have many naval scenes, but could help the creative juices to flow. I'll see what I can come up with.

First off this is a post in attempts to be helpful. And I hope it isn't taken in bad form, as I've really just started posting in the last week. In fact if it is, please feel free to delete this post.
But,the wind filling the sails does not necessarily make a ships flags fly forward. In fact the flag is as likely to be flying straight back, sideways, or even just hang there depending on the actual direction of the wind being caught in the sails, and the amount of drag being place on the flag through forward momentum.
As a means of showing I'm not completely full of it, and hopefully help with inspiration for any and all who work something up, here's a quick youtube link.

Again, not trying to be a jerk, and I'm really excited to see what people come up with.

August 17th, 2009, 07:40 PM
actually you are correct in all aspects except straight back.unless the ship is in stays and the sails are flapping about dangerpously.

August 17th, 2009, 10:29 PM
Hmmm, interesting. Good to know. Only ever seeing sailboats from a distance, I've most likely misjudged the flags as being straight back, when they were actually to one side or the other.

I would think if the ship is tacking (not sure this is spelled right), that the flag would generally fly at 45 degrees to the rear of the ship.

Hi,
I thought I would post some early ideas. I want to show action in an environment but I don't want the viewer to be far away from the action. It wouldn't be much of an environment if the action was right in your face taking up the composition.

guilefine, yeah man, im encountering the same challenge, ill post mine soon, basically the same thing is happening in my painting ships are firing into eachother but i chose to pull the camera back a bit more than you did, but i do think that your composition is very strong and if u changed it you could lose what you have going right now, i suggest keep plugging away it looks great, the water is really nice

Had fun researching this one! I've chosen a particular moment in 'The Battle of the Nile' at 'Aboukir Bay'. Nelson's victory over the French fleet 1st August 1798.
At the hight of the battle around 10pm, the French flag ship 'Orient's" gunpowder stash explodes sending timber and rigging hundreds of feet into the air illuminating the night.
Here's my first sketch...

ok heres my early stage wip, very rough, i plan on working in more detail
i used ref from an old turner painting just for the color scheme the composition and everything else in it is from head but ive never done anything like this before so i needed some inspiration for colors on water...
but I have an urgent question... what color settings should i use for my monitor i'm using srgb right now, is that wrong, what is the standard setting evryone uses, please help because this is troubling me...
btw coldrum that is so great the feeling of it is very intense cant wait to see the explosions and everything in color

Oh, boy. I've really gotta have a crack at this topic... always loved those old naval battle paintings. Brilliant WIP's posted already. I think this will be very tough for me, but I will certainly give it a go. :)

Awesome stuff so far.
guilefine-way cool texture and energy (you're good at that).
coldrum- Good stuff as well- let's see some color! Like the energy though
alive-Nice color scheme. I think some of your boat shapes are a little misproportioned. About color settings... I'm not all that sure. You can create a color profile specifically for your monitor and use that. came across this: http://www.bergdesign.com/supercal/ not sure if its any good. gonna try it.
Yeah I was also thinking about the "environment" aspect of this assignment... I mean what is the environment exactly- the ocean? So instead (as always actually) I'm thinking about it more as shot design: Tell a story with a picture that establishes setting, time of day, mood, action, ect...
Be posting soon I hope; just went through a fresh reformat :(

August 20th, 2009, 03:26 PM
Yeah I was also thinking about the "environment" aspect of this assignment...
I see your point (as guilefine mentioned), but maybe a different interpretation of 'environment' can be applied? A close shot showing the confusion of smoke and masses of tangled sail and rigging would surely create a very interesting environment itself. This will be my first EotW but I understand the concept of an environment as it is usually required. I guess it's a fine line in this case as the 'scene' will almost surely become a big factor, but the trick here might be to find ways of exploring the intricate beauty of the ships so they become the environment. I know a local guy who paints the nude figure as a landscape.
Just a thought. :)

Just a small hint - check Aivazovsky :) (google images (http://images.google.pl/images?client=opera&rls=en&q=aivazovsky&oe=utf-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi)). No one beats this painter master in terms of oceans and ships.

guilefine : Love the texture and feel too, this would work as it is printed out on canvas, I'de hang it on my wall.
coldrum : impressive composition, cant wait to see it develop
alive: Looking good so far, I use srgb too, the colours and contrast in your wip look fine to me. I'm pretty sure that srgb is what you use for work posting on the web - but dont quote me on that. In regards to the composition though, I hope you dont mind me commenting that it feels a little heavy to the right, it feels as if it needs something on the left to balance the ship coming off the edge. I'm looking forward to the development.
Tonic I checked out Aivazovsky, that is some amazing work, his water actually looks wet, and the light he uses is beautiful. great reference. thanks

coldrum looking gooood... only crit is that i think that exploding boat should lean a bit more to the right... even though it probably wouldn't (since the gunpowder would exlode in all directions) i think it would lend a nice gentle diagonal to the composition...
Really proud of your homework, though... The explosion of L'Orient is legendary. :D
alive: good start, but your ships really need some ref. If you are lazy and don't want to look for pictures, you can always try "Master and Commander" (the movie) or the Horatio Hornblower miniseries... It'll give you lots of nice pretty shots of ships and give you an idea for how they move and how they rest in the water.
guilefine: really really liking it, especially the subtle yellow paint stripes!

Sidharth Chaturvedi I like your idea. I think the perspective is a bit off, you seem to have very little mid ground. Also, all your characters are looking a bit wooden. It's a valiant effort but perhaps your making it too hard for yourself. I'd zoom out and just paint in basic impressions of things. If something doesn't work hide it with water or a shadow or something. You will end op with a better picture by using less detail.

Damn, I don't have much time left, (just noticed this challenge....been working on my sketchbook!) but I think I will have a shot. Great work so far folks.
*Edit* Don't think I have ever painted ships before so here is a speedy to get me in the mood. Despite looking through reference pics, it looks like a terrible ship to me! lol.

Okay, here is my next wip. Still early days yet. Not sure if I will balance the composition with a ship on the right, possibly exploding since there should be some kind of shooting going on I think, or make the island in the distance taller with mountains or something. Could move the main ship more to the right I guess.

zimfin, loving it , incredible job on the water, my only crit is im wondering why the ship is firing at the sail of a ship that is already sunk lol? still really really nice work,,, i think u should bring that ship out of the water... what you think? u could have people jumping overboard too it would add dramatic qualities

Thanks! Yeah, it bothers me too! I thought I would suggest there is another ship to the far right, (off-screen) by having shots from it hitting the water around the "Victory" ship. Not sure that would work. Maybe I will resurrect the sunk one a little so there could be some small reason for firing at it! lol.
Sidharth: Looking good. A credit to you for using real paint. Nice cat too. :-)

tonic, i think it "would" be static, except that you have the fire in the background which adds a lot of life to the piece, i think it has a cool " after the battle feel ", like, perhaps those ships in the foreground are reinforcements going to avenge the sunken ships
