Hello and welcome to my sketchbook!

= D My name is Rebecca and I am currently 21 and living in Southern California! I have been drawing all my life, but I have only recently started to take it pretty seriously. I want to improve so here I am!

Any comments or critiques are defiantly appreciated! Thank you! = )

Black on black still life, hands and some random doodles. I've honestly never really done a still like before so it's about time!

I really like the sketches in your recent post. The two portraits are really lovely. The perspective in your still life seems a little off though. The shoe and sock look like they're tilted to far forward...

Hi kittens,

First off, really great stuff. You have an amazing ability so far. That first portrait is well done. I do see a bit of a need to learn values and light a bit more... the cheeks of the girl in the portrait aren't showing light properly; same with the apple.

You are pretty far down the road, though. You have a really good grasp on form so far and your lines are great.

Great start!

Thanks so much for the input! I had a pretty hard time with the perspective on that still life painting. Obviously something I need to really sit down and put in some hours of drawing towards and well as with light as shade. Looking forward to doing it here = )

Here's some more stuff I've been working on. Something I started today for fun, some contour hands and foreshortening, a few self portraits, and my boyfriend.
Srry about the quality of the last two

Hi Kittens :-)

Well, no critics at my level on your drawings except ... wow ! I really like your portraits, except maybe the guy one. For some reason the chest feels ok but the face looks flat.

Your "comic like" drawing look pretty solid too.

Bon courage :)

Thanks Cornu! = )

So here's an little bit of an update. Been doing a of drawing lately but most of it is not really worth posting.

First here's an update of a piece that I feel like I've been working on for FOREVER...thanks to everyone helping me out in the critique center! = )

Next is an assignment for an Illustration class I'm currently taking.

and the last is just some boring still life =P

Alright well here is the finished Leo piece both inked and colored. I like the ink...I don't know how I feel about the colored version I don't think the colors are really working but I don't or well didn't really know how to fix it. Or I guess I just didn't want to start over and over and over again heh. I need the practice though I guess.

Thanks Sylph and Cado!

I guess this is a new piece I decided to start tonight, despite having massive amounts already of art homework...haha o well I was feeling inspired and decided to go with it.

I have been trying to achieve this view of the face in perspective so many times and failed. I'm not sure if it's really working or not? I am really trying to block it out but it's still confusing to me. Anyways...

Attempt at landscape painting in oil. I've honestly never really painting with oils before, I dunno why it just seemed expensive and somewhat of a hassle but I have to admit now that I doing it I am falling in love! I really am wanting to do a self portrait in oil, hopefully I have some time later tonight to start that! = D

Alright well I'm not really happy with this and I know it has a lot of issues but since this was today's project.

This is an assignment for an illustration class I'm currently in. Basically you have to take a fairytale or nursery ryhme and alter it in some way. It's supposed to be done in a kids storybook like fashion Only allowed to you one color as an "accent". = D

@Eraiasu- Thanks! And yes Draw!!! = D

An update of the past couple of days finish of a sargent color study in oils which the camera didn't really pick up too well, it's not really "finished" per say but I don't think I'm going to work on it anymore meh...

Some quick sketches and some random colonial looking people! Which look kinda funky now that I'm seeing them smaller, o well I guess practice is practice. And other randomness = D

I told myself that I'm going to post the good and the bad of everything I do here. No one is perfect and we all have good as bad days. The point of this is to help motivate progression. Guess I'm mostly just talking to myself here or giving myself an out loud (sorta) confirmation that everything here does not have to be amazing. We all have to start somewhere and that is OK!

Cacodaemonia
November 24th, 2009, 12:54 PM
In the first two portraits, it looks like you might be making the noses just a bit too long, and the space between the noses and bottom of the chin a bit too small. I do that a lot, too. D:

kittens
November 25th, 2009, 06:55 PM
Thanks Caco! yea now that I am looking at them again I def see what you are talking about ><

A few sketches and another attempt are trying to color this picture!! Aghhh! I think it's better than the last but I'm not totally satisfied with it. I tried to go flatter but I don't think it worked.

I really love your pencil work. :) It's funny - this girl (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=840145&stc=1&d=1259387632) reminds me of the character portraits from FFVIII. XD

For the skin tone practice - and I'm learning all this, too, so take what I say with a grain of salt - I think the right side of her face looks really good. There's that nice warm reflection from her hair that is believable. The left side and the areas facing the camera are a bit less convincing, though. The grayish shadows on the left, in particular, seem way too desaturated to me. And here's some advice I got recently - for the brightest highlights, try using the complimentary color of whatever color the object is. So in this case, blue-green.

MasonJames
November 28th, 2009, 04:34 PM
I really like the first drawing, is that a self portrait? The ants idea is genius.

Nice anatomy studies, and this girl (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=845242&stc=1&d=1259901954) looks awesome. :) The legs in your most recent post don't looks quite right, though. The foot on the ground doesn't really feel like there's any weight resting on it, and the raised leg has some issues around the ankle.

It seems that you enjoy drawing females more than drawing males.

I like your pencil work on the latest piece, but I can't help but to notice a slight of femininity on the man's face. I don't know if this intentional or not.

I like your style, though. it reminds me of Disney and these sketches are great.

Hi, just looked through your SB, you've got some real potential.
Keep up with making those anatomy and face sketches, it's really important to understand how human body looks and works.
Try to make more sketches from life, animals, plants, cars, streets and etc. try to understand how each thing connects to other and how they interact together.

You draw many faces and characters but most of them have the same face, try to draw different characters- old, young, girls, guys, babies, ugly, beautiful and etc.

There are tons of good artists that can draw perfectly a cute fantasy girl but when you ask them to draw an old man sitting in a chair they say that they don't like it - when actually they just can't draw it, like i said before you've got real potential- please don't become one of these artists.

Keep up the great job and keep practicing.
Alex.
:)

December 26th, 2009, 04:19 PM
You've got style. I'll be keeping an eye on this sb from now on. Every time I think of a critique to make I see that you've addressed it in the next post.

Wonderful line quality and flow. The poses have life and energy. Try doing some work on expressions because I notices they're often the same. Also keep working on your color application and try to push the contrast in them and try not got let the brush strokes in your digital paintings get to uniform. It'll be more interesting if you mix it up and got in thicker in some places. For example, the background in last image in post 84 isn't as interesting as it could be with more variation and contrast.

Keep posting, rah rah rah! Can't wait to see more.

Haven't updated in a while cause of the holidays but I'm still been drawing!

Thanks for all the helpful comments.

@ Meph - Thanks so much! = D

@ plant- Not sure if this is the answer to your question but I used charcoal on newsprint with a lot of accidental smudging. = )

@ Fallenangel - Thank you so much for your post. It's funny because the past week or so I told myself basically exactly what you have said. Going to try to lay off drawing the girl, or at least not as much. As you can see from this post. I really want to try to expand and your post just re-affirmed my thinking and I appreciated your directness! = D

@ Mokhi - Thanks so much for you crits! You are very right! = )

I'm really am not liking this now but here was my finished chow just because I thought I should meh...

Alright well after watching the Vandruff on demand I kinda see Bridgeman in a new light so here are a few studies.

I did do some expression studies about a week ago, using some random tutorial.

Also I'm trying to draw something other than people and I'm actaully really enjoying the freedom of it. If you can't tell, the last page I was watching Finding Nemo = P

Thanks Again =D

I would agree with Alex and suggest some more drawing from life, but! - in your own style. Its clear thats what youre enjoying.
Using the charcoal works well. You could then move onto photoshop and try out some custom brushes that have a similar great result?

You seem to intuitively know how to capture the figure of the people in your drawings, the women in particular. If the figure isn't perfect than you capture it very close to being perfect.

I love the portrait in 79, despite the right eye being a little out and the hair looking slightly too big for the face.

Definitely doing well, hope you come back and give some updates soon.
