Laylo-Dred: Ok :). I`m going to try and post daily, but I figured I would only post new things because it`s sort of a new beginning for me. I`m actually going to become more serious about art so....yea. If you guys wanted to see old stuff, I`d be happy to post it though.
Here`s a little eye that I spent hours on >.<. Looks easy....Really isn`t XD. I also have some anatomy lessons, one so far but I`ll have more, to upload so get ready for that :).
Sorry I`m so slow at posting, I spend a lot of time on stuff because.....Ummm......I`m a little bit of a new artist :D.

B-man: Hmmm, I agree with you there, but it was really late soo...yea. I'll get another eye in soon and see how it goes :).
Here's some figure studies from today and one from yesterday. Also a drawing that I spiffed up a bit from my huge pile of sketches. I'll be doing A LOT more figure studies I also found out that they're a nice way to relieve anger and stress :D. Also, I'll get the ref credits up shortly. I'm on my parents computer and they would be suspisious if I got on the "nude" websites even if it is for artistic purposes....This is what you get for being a teenager *facepalm*. Oh and as for the baby ref, I have no idea where that's from...Sorry :///.
EDIT: Here's a little bit more. Just some random little doodles and don't say anything about the dude on the bottom XD. It was drawn without a reference ._.. I'm thinking about taking the guy with the funny hat and robe thing a little further, I like him :). Also, I'm going through a phase of wanting to draw middle eastern men? I dunno I like their funny hats :).

New update on the middle eastern dude. I used a reference for the pose, but...He was wearing a leather jacket so it kinda messed up the dude`s arms...I`ll have to fix that using another ref. Lots of pictures from Prince of Perisa and Arabic men used here for his outfit (even though it`s not that interesting) and the thing by his neck is suppose to be cloth with an orb connected on the end, but...It just doesn`t look right, any suggestions on that?
Another thing, this will be updated with some sketches and figure studies late today, when I get to my scanner :). Maybe even a little digital study...Not sure...

I've been on vacation for a few weeks, butttt now I'm back :). I'm sad to say that I barely drew on vacation...I know, I know, shame on me, but here are some sketches I did. No refs used except on the quick sketchy face. Enjoy? Crits are welcome :). Oh and I'll be working on the arabic dude tonight most likely, any ideas for a background? I wanna do one of him on the left side and like a landscapey thing on the right, but not sure what to do....I'll have to do some landscape studies, eh?

Good work on that painting of the eye up there. Your pencil sketches could improve a lot if you stopped smudging your pencils and tried to shade along the form instead. Although smudging is a perfectly viable and professional technique with pencils, when you are first starting it ends up looking very amateurish and is a bit of a hold back. It's just better to use many lines instead, or the side of the pencil to make broad sweeping strokes of graphite.
That arabian dude looks pretty cool, but the face threw me off. You should get some sharper angles in there to make him look more masculine, because at first I thought he was a girl. Don't be afraid to use photo reference for his face even though he's kind of a concept character.
Don't take any of these crits too hard on yourself, I'm just trying to help you out:). Keep up the good work!
Nisshoku
August 22nd, 2009, 06:37 PM
cdejong: Umm...Any smudging is done by paper being rubbed together, I've been practicing not using smudging because my art teacher KILLS us if we do ;). And yea I agree about his face, I was kinda going for "boyish looking man" but...It just looks awkward ://. So yea, I'll be fixing that up soon :).
Well....This was SUPPOSED to be a good, speedy practice on buildings (cause I've hardly EVER done them before) but it all ended up in crappy painting, perspective errors and frustration. Any ideas on how to get perspective right, creating bolder, nicer more speedy look colors, and keeping the frustration down?? Please let me know if you do!! Oh and here's my steps...

Here's a little update for you guys :D. It's a piece I've been working on for my Drawing class. The objective was to find an animal with it's mouth and eyes open and "wrap" it in ribbons. This is my finished rough draft and I will be tracing it onto bristol board on monday. Sorry I had to take a picture of it, it was too big to fit on my scanner :/. Oh and there will be solid black negative space in between some of the ribbons :).

Hi Nisshoku,
Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook. It looks like you've got a great start and I hope you keep up with it. I think your apple is one of your best paintings actually.
Have you read the "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain," book by Betty Edwards? It might help a lot with your pencil sketches and portraits. You seem to "see," better when you are painting then when you are drawing!
Oh, and for perspective, try just practicing with some cubes in perspective first, before you go to more complicated things like houses. After you've mastered that, try a cube with the corner sliced off, and so on. . .

no updates from me for over a month. Honestly, I'm not surprised. After school started, art's become an after thought. It's not really the "slightly burning passion" that I had during the summer and is more of a "ehh.... art. big deal" so don't be surprised if you don't see me around much anymore, I've pretty much given up the entire art track. All of you keep at it though, you guys are tomorrow's artists and...I'm very disappointed to say I won't be a part of that group. I want to be, but I don't want it enough it's not something I'd give up everything for like you guys would. The passion just died, mostly because it was just failure, failure, failure, failure, a glimpse of triumph, failure, failure andddd more failure. So, basically, I give up. Nice to have seen you guys and I'll still keep checking in and critiquing, I just won't be posting anymore works.
see ya,

I would like to have a word to say to you but you basically said it..you want it, but not enough :(
And failure..well..that goes somehow hand in hand; if you do not want it enough, you won't give your best, and that won't help you to improve...
I just wish you could reconsider and still post..but if not, i am glad you gave it a try, even if it was over the summer!
And who knows..perhaps you'll start again in the winter break? Tehehhe ;)

Ok... I think I'm back. We'll see how it goes haha. Here's a little progress on a portrait I'm doing. I may expand on it and such, but for now it's just painting practice. The proportions are off, I know, and I'm working on it ;).

Hey, we have the same weaknesses, don't worry, you can work through them. If you keep posting daily you'll improve for sure. Just keep your goal in mind and KEEP POSTING.
Have you tried out "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain"? It's a good book for improving your observational drawing. I found it really helpful when I was getting ready for university and it gives you daily exercises to do. Its only for pure life drawing, but it's a good starting point.
That apple study looks great, your pretty good with color already. But you the tones on that last face are too close to each other. You should try to get some more contrast in there. It's good that your getting lots of color in the skin tone. Looking good.
Keep fighting, rah rah rah!

Moki: Thank you so much :). Yea, I agree on the portrait, I'm still working on that side of the face so yea. I've also fixed the proportions a lot, I'll update a new screen cap on here today. I've heard a lot about that book, but honestly haven't looked into it. I'll check it out (especially since my b-day is coming up) because I really need help on observation drawing (like, real, real bad haha). Thank you for your comments, it means a lot :D.
EDIT: Here's some things I've been working on today. The gymnast is a sketch I did last night and I started speed coloring it today. I used a ref for the drawing, but trying to not use it for coloring. Any tips/hints ect. for coloring is always useful. Also, I know a ribbon doesn't do that, I just wanted it too -.- lol. The other is just a more recent update on my portrait. Still working on the right side of the face also, any tips for brows? For some reason, i have lots of trouble lol.

Phew it's been a while! School and art class has got me swamped. I really need towork on the laziness factor ~_~. I'm avoiding doing a project for a big art contest.... It's because colored pencils scare me... Ok well that has driven me to start on a little thingy ma bob (just a short little speedy mini project) for a group on deviantart. The them is love (original, right? -_-)
when it's all done, I'll add copyrights for refs ect.

Ok so i think you can really do this, but you have to discipline your strokes, work clean, start big and get smaller on top, otherwise it will just look messy. Don't think you have to get every stroke in, every strand of hair and so on. It doesn't have to be hyper-realism to be art dear! :)
Good with colours and landscapes-envos. Keep at it!! :D
I read you got yourself an art book. Great! This reminds me, do you have anything from bridgman, loomis or hogarth? If not but a bridgman!! Every artist should have a bridgman. :)
I read your signature and i...i don't know what to say! Thank you!! It is very sweet and kind of you to include me in it!

Blacky: Okies I tried to control my strokes on this next one, though it's a speed paint. I might refine it a bit more cause it's still looking a bit messy to me ~___~.
I'll get one after I finish the one I currently have! My mama says "one art book at a time" lol. Is there any specific one you'd suggest? :)
You're welcome, dearyyyy it's so true ^_^. I do draw just about everyday, but usually it's just doodles ~_~. I'm going on a ski trip on monday though so maybe I'll get more in :D. And I draw a lot in my sketch book and with colored pencils, but it's a supreme PAIN to scan stuff so I usually don't bother posting my little daily doodle type stuff of random people and stuff haha ^^;.
-------------------------------
Alright it's like 3 thirty and this portrait took me... Around 3 and half I think. This is my most successful portrait. Ever. I'm finally beginning to understand colors and how they come together and what colors do what (I hope lol) and I think this speed paint looks much richer and more "realistic" then my others. As Blacky said, my strokes are still a bit messy. It's a work in progress haha. I might refine this more later. We'll see :D.

I know, I have too many WIPS XD. I'm practicing a speed paint of portrat-ness on Chris Martin! Why? Well if you know me, you know he's like the inspiration for all my work (except God of course , you sillys). Those are the two things that help my work and keep me going, so why not pay a tribute to the one I can draw? (obviously I can't draw God ~_~). I know i have a lot of WIPs, but these portraits are helping me get colors right on the face. Right now, he's looking a little red but... He looks red in the picture so... idk? Remember, it's not hyper realism, it' s just a speedy that I'll finish tomorrow probably.
No idea how long I've worked on this. The sketch took for EVER! I had to get him perfect ~_~. After I'm done sketching, I always lay it over the picture to see how close I got. In the end, the hand was a bit off but other then that... Everything was almost perfect! Those eyes look so simple, but took forever to draw and get right.... The mouth.... Omg let's not even talk about the mouth.
Either way, I placed my entire Coldplay collection on repeat (A collection of over 60 songs including all the major albums and EPs) muhahaha. It was great. Keep in mind this isn't all Coldplay's songs (I delete the ones I'm not fond of). *cough*Prospekt's March and viva la vida *cough cough* DDD.

Ok So I'm planning to update as daily as possible. All the paintings below are speed paintings without references that took between 30 min to an hour.
These three are from the past three or four days (not sure). I have loads of homework and have art school work stuff so I AM drawing each day, just not always what I "want" to draw that isn't an assignment. Basically these are just value portrait studies for now, to get a better feel for values in the face. Please critique on proportions or values! :).

Nice work. Your use of the brush is very busy, but I think if you keep refining it it might work. You really should spend some more time grouping your values though, it's important to be able to pull off what you're trying to get at. Keep painting studies and using reference, at this point it's going to help you more than anything to paint much more from reference rather than practicing imagination work. Imagination work is always fun though, but just keep it in mind that if you want to improve quickly, you should do more studies.
Best of luck with your painting and drawing journey!

This is a current sketch project that was actually due last week for art class haha. I worked on it quite a bit today, so it's my "daily doodle". Ok I needed a little break from yellow so I looked through my saved up stocks and found this one :). It's Simon Baker who plays Patrick Jane on The Mentalist. This sketch took about 4 hours cause I'm being OCD on everything... And I don't draw from reference as much as I should :^^;:. I still see a few minor errors, but I really need to stop. Naidy: Haha thank you! I never noticed that about my noses? O.o. Anyway, I know what you mean as far as the inconsistancy of my work. Mostly it's because of lighting and using reference. I'm better at dramatic lighting cause I can rely on the contrast for making the face more "3d" like lol. And most of my "bad" portraits are not referenced ^^;.
Blacky: It's funny that you two like my noses lol, odd thing to like I guess ~_~. Anyways, thank you! And I will keep on truckin'!

Ok so I just got over a little bit of an artist's block. I'm starting to tire of the portrait, but I'm trying to learn dicipline (so I can survive my PREAP Studio Art class next year) sooo I am determined to see it completely and utterly finished before I begin anything else! Please know that I'm going to add more skin texture so he doesn't look so... Young ._.. Any suggestions on how to make people look older would be greatly appriciated! :D.
As for this update, here's what changed:
*His eye was finished
*More blending was done to the face
*Basic colors were blocked in on the neck
*A bit more texture was added to the face to get rid of the "waxy" feeling.

Ok! Here's probably the last update before I post the entire finished work of Simon Baker! :D. I'm so excited! This will be my first finished and refined portrait..... Ever O.O. I slapped on a copyright because I'm paranoid >.> <.<.
Ok, I'm still going to add some more skin texture to make his face more... Not shiny like sooo yea, and that hair is glaring at me and taunting me ;____;. I may work on the shirt more, but I dunno. I kind of like the texture it has now. It's not completely realistic (I don't really like completely realistic stuff), but hey I like it ;).

*Eyebrows were started and completed

IT'S FINISHED! I'm sorry, but I am VERY excited! Sure there are some errors and his hair is a bit big, but I don't care! I'm very happy with how this turned out and it's still sinking in that I finished my very first full, detailed digital painting O.O. I can even see my style showing its self. I've always liked that rough, more textured stuff rather then fully realistic and smooth and what do you know? That's what came out! I can't wait to start a new painting or drawing, but for now it is sleepy time :).
If you have any crits, they are still welcome, but I am not positive if I will change this piece.

*gasp* What's that?! Is that traditional?! Yesh, my friends, it is haha. My scanner decided to cooperate again >.>.
Anyways, just a few figure studies. They've been darkened in Photoshop cause I shaded with a 2H pencil and it didn't show up well on the computer :). I still feel awkward drawing off naked people... I should get used to it, but it's always sorta strange. What is even stranger is when people look through your sketch book and are like "OMG! IS THAT A NAKED PERSON?!" *siiiigh*. I'm most CERTAINLY not ready to draw naked men yet lol.
I may do some colored pencil studies today, not sure though. I'm starting a new full-colored study! This time, it's a woman doing yoga (which is the best work out by the by ;)). I'll post the ref and sketch up soon!

EDIT: Well, as promised, here's a prelim sketch of my new full color study. Probably only 30 minutes spent on the sketch and yes, there is more to the canvas, I just can't figure out how to do perspective in Photoshop. If ANYONE has hints on that, they will be greatly, greatly appreciated!

EDIT2: Here's some more on the yoga image. I had to complete the face before everything else as usual ~_~. Well, mostly just base colors. I dunno how much work I'll get done tomorrow cause I have a very busy day (I'll be gone from 8:15 in the morning till 9:00 at night) but we'll see! Enjoy!

Ok here's a little update on my yoga chick. She'll probably be finished in the next couple days. Oh! And I got my days mixed up, TOMORROW is when I'll be super busy haha. I'll post some figure studies and maybe more work on my yoga chick later.

Hi guys! Sorry for the lack of update! I've been very busy the last couple days with a concert (saw Mercy Me, Tenth Avenue North, and Britt Nicole), band practice (I'll start playing in TWO worship bands here pretty quick), and more church stuffs. But yesterday I picked up the drawing book I bought months ago and did the pre-instruction activity. The object was to draw a self portrait, a portrait of someone from memory, and a hand. Here are all of those.... None of them came out very good ;___;. The final thing is a sketch assignment I had a couple months ago to create something that is "Tim Burton styled". I had a lot of fun! It was done in Pilot Precise ink and prisma colored pencils. I'll probably upload an update on my yoga girl later!
Oh and since I have to upload everything onto a computer that doesn't have photoshop, photoshop.com has become my best friend XD.

For now, I'm going to finish my yoga chick :D. Surprisingly, the pose wasn't too difficult to draw. It took maybe... 30 minutes to an hour, I do however have a few more kinks to work out :).

New update! I got a hint from a pro to work on more then one thing at once, so that's what I'm doing. Just two things though (and the other one is nearly finished).
Oh, the collage of image behind her is another little hint I got from a pro. And that is to use images as your color pallet and to help with lighting. I wanted a dark, sunset type silhouette, but in an unrealistic way (sorta). I wanted the bright silhouette background, but also some light on her to create contrast, but not too much of it. So I found a sunset image and set it up like so. It helped a LOT so see if it works for you :).
I did not draw this! Only painted it!

*the lighting on the breasts needs to be dimmed.

Updated. I'm feeling very artistically frustrated right now. I can't quite point out why... I'm just being impatient. My brush strokes are being sloppy and rushed and I'm not paying any attention to details... I don't know why I'm being so impatient. Any hints? New update! Rendered the stomach and skirt a bit more, and changed her pendent on the cape. I added a couple of background ideas and I'm thinking my full canvas would be highly vertical so I can create a beautiful clouded sunset. The orange line is my horizon, but maybe it should be higher?

Hello again!
I love the colours you're using in the picture of that woman. I'd say her breasts might be a little too artificial looking, like if someone has implants they look stuck on, whilst naturally they make a kind of-uh, tear drop shape? (This is certainly not my area of expertise) but I see you've already been working on that. I absalutely adore the colours on it though, the flesh is very well done!
I know there's a guide on races and how they look on deviant art somewhere so I'll go find it for you, it'll probably help more than I can. xD

Just started my art class this morning and that jogged the creative juices a little. I have this brilliant concept, but, after a while of frustration of not being able to create it correctly, I pretty much give up on that. *sigh* Away from the interesting, fun work and back to boring old portraits. This is Payson Keeler off of Make it or Break it, she is easily my favorite character. It doesn't look like her at all and I hate it. It was just something to pass the time. Probably won't correct it.
Creative juices stopped again. Art block again. I'm so flippin frustrated at my own ability I could rip my hair out. I don't have patience for study, and I don't have enough determination to do a good job and always stay motivated. I'm stuck in the worst rut you can be in. You want to take your talent further, but can't. You want to quit, but you can't. So you stay in a lukewarm Hell. Great.

Oh, I think EVERYONE knows how that feels. Really odd, but I have that with writing right now, which I'm not even serious about. xD
I think your line arts wouldnt look so bad to you if you did them in say- a lighter colour, like brown, or red. ANyways, looking at the colours you're putting on I think you're way better at colours than I am.
You feel bad, but believe me- it will pass. In perhaps a week you'll start feeling everything you draw is brilliant- and then the next you're binning everything again.
My gran used to joke artists are all a bit bi-polar, and sometimes I almost feel there's a speck of truth to it.
Keep drawing through it, it'll pass soon enough!

I see you have a lot of interest in portraits, and I guess figure drawing. Keep at it. I see great potential in you! keep up the painting. I like the realism look your going for? or is it hyper-realism? lol, that's even more extreme. I say, study the masters, and DO draw everyday. I convinced myself to buy a pocket sketchbook, so I can literally sketch when I'm not doing anything else lol. It's a good habit, but obviously don't sketch when something important is happening.
My advice would be to draw more before you paint. And when you start painting, Focus on greyscale. The last part of that is what I've been crit on the most actually. Grayscale painting is apparently VERY important to start with! anywayz, sorry for ranting. Keep it up!
and yeah, thumbs up for God. *smiles*
Peace!

January 8th, 2011, 05:44 AM
hm, I say you're getting way ahead of yourself with those fully rendered paintings. your main weakness, as far as I can tell, is construction - you don't seem to do any of it.
have a look at some books by andrew loomis (available for free on the web), and you'll see that professional artists actually work very hard to build shapes up from primitives to help them understand the form in 3d. that's the key to painting anything believably. it's really really important
i'd say working with value and colour right now is only going to frustrate you because you need to improve your foundations, otherwise it's not going to teach you a great deal. have a go at line drawing, preferably in pencil. pencils are best for learning, it's tough but you'll learn faster.
a quick trick you could also try is flipping the image every now and then. while you're working on something your eyes get very used to it, and you start overlooking mistakes easily. once you flip it, there'll be a split second where your brain has to completely re-interpret the image, and a lot of faults will jump out at you in that moment as if you were looking at the image for the first time.
hope this helps :)

poetry man: First of all, thanks for the compliments :). Secondly, a pocket sketchbook is something I DO have; I just don't use it ^^;. Right now, I don't see where the time could be for one since I'm either in class or at home (which I have access to my larger sketchbook). Once summer rolls around I probably will use it more ^.^. I'm trying to draw everyday, though it is very difficult. I agree on the greyscale thing and I will try to do more things greyscale. I was just on a color high cause I had just finished a full colored pencil piece for art class XD.
NeonDuck: I completely agree with everything you said in your comment. At the time, I was taking on things a little tooo ambitious. I just ignored the people saying "learn fundamentals" ect. ect.. I'm done ignoring them, now lol. I actually started Bridgeman's Complete Guide for Drawing from Life today (there are some studies attached) so I'm going to start there for anatomy. It's hard to balance working on fundamentals (like, basically stick figures) and also pull out fully polished pieces for art class at the same time ~_~. I'm doin my best though! Thank you so much for your comment :).
--
Alrighty, today I started Bridgeman. Yes, I've given up on ignoring the whole "anatomy" thing. I can't just guess. I've FINALLY realized that and now I feel like an idiot for not seeing that sooner -_-''. Anyway, I only read the first couple of chapters and I'm still figuring out how to really practice the skills/techniques Bridgeman offers. So far, I'm enjoying it and even after one night of reading, I feel slightly more enlightened *o*.
Anyway, these are my first "Bridgeman doodles" (no idea what else you'd call them XD). These are really fun and they make me realize how limited my "pose library" is O.O. Sorry I don't have anything more interesting for today ^^;.

updates are looking good and you are working hard. Don't worry about feeling uninspired, we all do sometimes. The key is to make sure you don't ever stop all together though because its hard to get that momentum back.
One crit for you/tip: try to use a larger brush when painting hair. Consider it like a large mass rather than a collection of tiny strands. Getting into that mindset will help you with more realistic rendering. Good luck

Well it's been a while and yes I know I do this a lot. I have commitment issues, apparently... Anywho, don't think that this means I haven't been drawing (I have, promise) it just means I haven't been posting. Well here's a figure study. Anyway, I'm hoping this time I keep the commitment I'm making and try my best to post almost daily. I've matured since I left CA and I'm thinking that might help. Besides, this year is when I decide whether I major or minor in studio art so it's a big deal!

It seems to me that you actually know quite some construction rules but you apply them improperly.
Your heads are far too large for your bodies and your faces are far too large for your heads. This is a typical mistake since you just paint things larger that you think are more important. Size is the easiest way to emphasize something.
However you need to see things for what they are.
Use contrast, color or details to emphasize instead.
I hope you dont think this is out of line but I did a quick paintover.
Let me know if its helpful in any way:rendered:

Xelar: Actually I don't mind at all! Paint overs are always helpful :). Well this painting was actually a child (hence the slightly disporportionate body), but I do agree that the anatomy is still out of wack. Most of my portraits are exactly as you said anyway (head to big, faces too big.) I know different constructions, but I'll be honest, I hardly ever use them :/. I mostly paint by eye (with the exception of simple lines to keep the nose, lips, and chin straight). I've heard of the "eyeball sizing" method where you measure each distance by the size of the eye and the lips are as wide as the puipls ect., but it always looks weird to me. Am I crazy or is that just a bad method? I'm gonna give a portrait a try tonight using the method and see if it works better. Thank you for all your help!

It's awesome to see that you've jumped on the fundamental band wagon! :cheerleader::cheerleader:
They can be grueling but they really pay off in the long run :).
Currently I think proportion and perspective studies will benefit you the most. Without a good base in these anatomy is going to be a huge frustration (trust me, I've been there!)
I really liked box men for practicing these things together. Focus on the orientation of each body part using a box, cylinder or wedge shape. Really bare the body down to the simplest forms. We did these in life drawing classes at school between 5-15 minuets for each pose.
Once you get a handle on these it's a great transition into Bridgeman's books. I love his stuff because it's like the figures are carved from blocks so they're a lot more beginner friendly.
Skeletons are also super good for practicing proportions- just keep your skeletons simple, like Mr skull below. - drawing every lump and rib and little nubby thing isn't as important as understanding the basic forms. Once you get the big stuff down, it's easy to add the fancy stuff.
Hope this is helpful!! Happy sketching ^_^

Neyut: Yeah foreshortening is my worst enemy. I can never seem to get it right. I've got to find some techniques to help with that and practice! Thank you for your visit :sungod:.
Rhubix: I've actually never heard of boxmen. I'm only in high school so I've never taken a life drawing class or anything (our class is like... Do whatever you want in whatever media you want because you're seniors -_-). So I tried one of your boxmen and it took me a good 40 minutes. It's heard getting all the angles right! I learned the hard way that just jumping in doesn't work, you can look through my sketchbook and see that ;). I'm going through a random anatomy book I found in my local book store (it was like 5 bucks so I couldn't refuse :P), but when I'm done with that I'll check out Bridgeman. I've dabbled in Loomis, but never Bridgeman so that'll be interesting! Thank you for your helpful comment!.

So I know I've come and gone on this forum, but this time is different. I'm more committed and determined than ever. As usual, I procrastinated until the last second :P. With art school looming in my near future, I don't want to go in as some uber noob and be pushed out of the art community. So, yeah. I'm motivated now haha. Also I learned something that is glaringly obvious: That I should actually listen to people who give me advice and not get offended. I know it's like completely DUH, but hey. I'm as stubborn as a mule and generally learn things the hard way :).
Aight so I've got several pages tonight. The first are from a book called A Complete Guide to Anatomy for the Artist that I grabbed for 5 bucks at my local bookstore. It's very basic, but hey, it'll teach me something... And it was only 5 bucks -_-.
You'll also see my first boxman. This was suggested by Rhubix and, I must say, it's very helpful! It helped me understand the form of my model rather than just the two dimensional part. Expect to see more of those!
And, of course, I have my 60 sec poses. Ignore the first three, I was falling asleep ~__~. Tried some new gesture styles as well. Are they getting any better?

Yay! your boxman is awesome, I'm impressed how quickly you jumped on that :). It doesn't matter how long it takes to get them done, as long as your learning stuff.
I can relate to your school woes. I had three art classes between grade 1 and 12. One was taught by en English teacher who thought it was a shame we didn't have one. We made stuff out of toilet paper tubes and stuff- it was fun but not very instructive.
In high school our art teacher (two years of awesomeness:android:) was a drunken lady of unknown western European origin (I suspect wales). She would give us riveting classes like - go out side and find some leaves, then come inside and draw the leaves. For grading she would have us bring our work to her desk, she'd write down a number and send us away. My friend and I shared the work and handed in the same pieces, but we never got the same grade on anything.
I was starving for useful instruction, it was very frustrating.
I actually only got accepted into animation school because the director who interviewed me liked how stubborn I was.
Her first words to me were- your work is very bad, and I said. I know, I only have a basic grasp of perspective, my anatomy is atrocious, and I struggle with proportions. I never had a drawing class, that's why I'm here. and she some how bought it
I was arguably the worst in my starting class of 40 something, had to work twice as hard on everything, but I graduated in the final class of 8 survivors. So have faith in stubbornness, it can go a long, long way :)
It was in collage that I got my first life drawing class - and we started with "running line gestures" (http://s3images.coroflot.com/user_files/individual_files/202434_vvbSLhIT80lkc2PHrxsUiGg64.jpg) we worked in conte (basically hard black chalk) on news print pads- but crayons work pretty well for sketchbooks and smaller paper. Pastels can be fun, and pretty.
If you use the side of the chalk this way, instead of the point you can focus more on the volumes and directions of the body, similar to the boxmen.
Another exercise we did they called 'planar studies. (apple below) Set up a still life, (boots, handbags, and toys work really well) As you draw the object try to map the planes on the surface. It's a great way to practice perspective.
A nice quick exercise for perspective is just drawing boxes and cylinders in different views.
If you ever have questions or need advice on stuff, feel free to send me a message. I'm a supporter of stubborn artists everywhere :)
Happy sketching.

Rhubix: I wish I had seen this before 1am so I could have tried it! That's an incredible story, by the way, I can't believe you had enough confidence to even apply! I talked myself out of applying to an art and design school simply because I didn't think I was good enough. But man, now I think I've become more stubborn >.<. My art teacher is kind of like my second mom. I've had her for the past 4 years and we've gone to a lot of competitions together and stuff. She's even going to walk me on the stage during graduation :sungod:. Her story is really good to because she just randomly took her first art class in college and decided then and there that she wanted to be an art teacher. I always thought that was so inspiring!
Thank you for these two new things to try, I'm very excited. The crayon/sketchbook one will have to wait because, and I kid you not, we have no crayons ._.. I'll have to pick some up from Walmart later this week. The planes I've kind of heard of, but never put into practice so I will try that tomorrow. Thank you again for all of your help! It's amazing how far you've come from "being the worst in your class". Also, I'll let you know if I need help! Thanks for the offer :hatsoff:

Alright, first off HAPPY NEW YEAR . My first post of 2012! This is such an exciting year for me because it's when I'm finally leaving childhood behind and moving on to "adult"hood. I turn 18 in 8 days now and it's scaring me how fast it's getting here. I feel like my time is running out and I still haven't decided what college I want to go to :nohope:. I don't think it'll really hit me that I'm going to be out of my parent's house until I sleep in my dorm room the first night :tihi:.
Anyway, this isn't just a year for maturity within myself, but also maturity in my artistic vision. My best friend is a year younger than me and she wants to become a writer (almost done with her first book!) She always says she's not afraid of being a "starving author" because she loves that image and idea. Well, I used to too until it was knocking on my door and I had to make a choice between doing what I love, but gambling everything or setteling for less, but living comfortably. It's a near impossible crossroads. When I was younger, I would have said "What I love!!" without hesitation, but now that it's breathing down my neck I'm scared. I'm scared of being stuck being a Certified Nurses Assistant and wiping butts for the rest of my life. I'm scared of having to live in my car because I can't pay the bills and I'm terrified of not being able to take care of whatever family I may have in the future. It's always those doubts: What if I'm not good enough? What if I give up? What if I loose my drive? These questions have finally kicked my butt into super high gear so I can be good enough for this industry. It's no longer "Oh I won't draw cause I don't feel like drawing." it's "You're gonna draw whether you feel like it or not. Yeah it's hard. Suck it up."
Thank you to anyone who actually read all of that :P.
ON TO THE IMPORTANT STUFF! New drawings from my anatomy book (muscle movement this time... And a very odd looking skull), posemaniacs 60 sec. each, boxman, and I decided to draw the actual figure next to the boxman. Sorry they run into each other :^^;:. I think the boxman REALLY helped me understand her form much better.
To be honest, I didn't feel like drawing those poses today. I tried my best to give 100 percent... I think I got to about 90 lol.
-Till tomorrow!

Happy new year! And happy 18th - only a week or so away! I like your ethics, its often difficult to push yourself because you are tired or there are other things you would rather be doing, but that's the difference between a hobby and a passion. Are you looking to study art full time? Good luck!

Ally: Thank you and Happy New Year to you too! I am trying to push myself as much as I can, but getting back into the swing of doing art everyday after taking a long break is hard! Not gonna lie, but I'll get to where it's easier :). I am looking to go full time, but I honestly don't think I'll know if I have what it takes until I step into my first actual art class and either rise or sink.

Hello! I know it's been a couple days since an update, don't worry I've been drawing just busy! I started school again today and I may begin working two jobs soon. It will only be temporary, but after the end of the month I will (hopefully) be working 20-28 hours a week and going to school full time. I won't be able to update everyday, but I will continue with my studies and poses everyday. I just posted to give you all a heads up on what's goin on and why I've been a little MIA. I will post stuff from the last two days tomorrow when I get home ^.^. I also start my art class up again tomorrow! Yay!

Well... It's been years since I updated here. I've been doing the arts, just not posting it much of anywhere except on tumblr every now and again. It's crazy to be diving head first into the field though. Let's update on where I've been these last couple years.
I am now 19 and attending art school, concentration in painting and drawing. I want to teach art at the university level after going to graduate school. I really found my niche in oil painting, but do draw every now and again.
Where I've gotten stronger
-Concepts
-Facial proportions and anatomy
-Color use
-Brush work
-Style
Where I am still weak
-Body anatomy
-Studies (Figures, academic studies ect. I just... really hate doing them a lot ~_~)
-Line quality
Here's a quick backtrack over some work completed so far this year.
EDIT: By years I meant a year :P.
