View Full Version : ConceptArt.Org Foundations: Jason Manley Composition Download- recovered and complete

Jason Manley
July 6th, 2009, 08:31 PM
I have completed the first of a foundation series on the subject of Pictorial Composition. It is just about to come out of the oven. The info within is extremely comprehensive.

Topics covered in this three hour lecture and analysis download

Composition Theory
Principles of Image Design
Rythm, Emphasis, Variety, Economy, Movement/Continuity, Repetition, Balance, and Unity.
Linear Design and Viewer Control
Tonal Pattern and Value Composition
The Theory of Space and Creation of Depth
Visual Narrative and Communication
Lighting Control
Mood Theory
Dramatic Devices
Breaking the Rules
A Crash Course in Composition History
Assignment Given

During the lecture, many major works of art, of the best in history, are anylized and deconstructed to illustrate all points. Historical composition is one of the key tools concept and 3d artists, illustrators, and fine artists, have at their disposal to improve their works from imagination and from life. I do not think this info is all together in one place, anywhere else.

I have personally visited most of the major museums around the world in my studies of this precise topic. I have learned composition with some of my art heros and most respected colleagues incuding Jim Garrison, Mark English, Malcolm "Skip" Liepke, Gary Kelley, Jack Unruh, Marshall Vandruff, Justin Sweet and many others.
I studied in the museums. I studied in my history books. I then spent years in the industry working with all those you know from MB. The knowledge I pooled is now summed up, organized, and in one lecture video that will be out this week.

More info to come...for now, here are a selection of the many images I cover from throughout art history in order to teach this topic.

:O!!!!!!!

Wow, this is something I've been hoping that would get covered, so a four hour lecture from Manley Man himself sounds too good to be true. Can't wait. Only one question: Price? Need to know how much I need to save up.

Now we just need a color theory download...

4 hours? That's gonna be one hell of a lesson, like a college-level session. Looking forward to it, Jason. :)

I've not seen all this info in any one college course anywhere. It really is comprehensive. There are some areas left open to explore and grow but the roots are all in place within.

Ian Barker
July 6th, 2009, 10:18 PM
Obviously I don't know exactly what's in the download, but I'm pretty sure there's going to be waay more content than a couple college sessions has to offer. Pretty sure it's also going to be much cheaper. I go to a $25,000/year school, which comes to around $60 for a 1 hour class session (that's what somebody told me anyways :/)

If you can find an entire semester or even year of composition class in college with this much aggregated info I will sign up for that one myself. :) Drove me nuts back in the day that I had to go all over the country to find answers. In two years at Ringling I picked up about fifteen minutes of what is in that video..if that. I got really lucky with my earliest teacher, Jim Garrison. Two of the other teachers, ladies by the name of Darlene Swaim and Penny Watson were also really key to my early foundation studies and my understanding of deconstruction and analysis. After that I had my time with the other painters and illustrators and had most of it together by the time I hit Black Isle. Puddnhead and Sweet and Kovacs and Marshall focused on it for quite a while too. I learned a lot watching those guys. I got to understand the quick read better from that crew. Marshall's composition class is taught differently but his and that of my former mentor Mr. G were by far the best at communicating the foundations of all my teachers to date. Still it took gathering this up from all over to cover it all.

Thanks everyone...It is very simply handled, but the info is really deep. I think you will see art and your own work in a completely different light after this one. If any of the above listed topics are not familiar to you there are holes in your foundations. Best part about composition though is Im still learning even after all my studies over the years. More to learn...more to learn.

Thank you. Yes I studied composition for ten years. That and color theory were the focus of the majority of my work and study. I have tried to sum it all up best that I could. I could go on and on about this but I also want to be sure that I only give the information required to spring out into the subject with a very solid base. The language or art is something we must all make our own. Which is why I have covered it the way that I have. There is depth there, for sure, and broad strokes as well. I really see it as opening all the right windows, letting in enough light, and enabling artists to look out into the subject and find their own answers too. First and foremost, I have gathered the language of composition, shown how many of the greatest artists who have ever lived have used those theories, and from there that magnifying glass is handed to you.

4 hours? That's insane haha. But it's good (or invaluable even) to have such a comprehensive and complete lecture in one video instead of spread all over the web in bits and pieces. I recognize a lot of those pieces and it will most probably a joy hearing you taking them apart. :) First minute buy for sure.

Now for the colour theory one..... ;)

Looks wonderful Jason, I am looking forward to it.

I didn't realize it, but should have guessed that you had Swaim and Watson as well as Garrison and Parrish. I actually had Watson as a teacher in Junior High too, before she left to teach at the college level.

Glad to see at least one Caravaggio in there. In my last trip to Italy, my eyes were opened to his compositions. For me, he is one of the more exciting artists on a pure compositional level. Can't wait to hear your insights.

It is currently more than four hours (about the same as two normal downloads, but I could not break it up like that so it is going to be all in one). The price is thirty buckaroos. This alone puts my my foundation year of art school to shame. I had a few excellent teachers that pointed me in the direction of where I could research some of these things, but the overall curriculum fails to cover half of these things, or if they do, it is poorly implemented into how to apply it to your own work.

I love that you are using art history to explain these concepts. One of the biggest disappoints I have about art school is that art history is kept separate from the creation process. We just memorize the date, creator, and genre--with no real analysis of formal concepts.

I wont be able to afford this right away but I will definitely be saving up for it. :)

I am short about a new corvette in cash on getting it done (there are a bunch more goodies going in now) and every sale gets us closer to finishing this. We will all see where the downloads dough is going once I turn on the switch, but at least a peek will let you know why it is good for more than your own art skills to pick these up, it is good for EVERYONE who is trying to learn, share, grow, and make it in the world of art. I really need the support. I would not squeaky wheel if this was not the case.

When you get a book at the store, at least you can read it to find out if its for you. :P

for me this has been the most informative download since barber's oil painting foundations. Its great to have something that's more theoretical and less process driven. I often think that sometimes the easiest things to learn are the easiest to forget. Hearing all of this info was like reuniting with a long forgotten friend.

Great work Jason. Highly recommended.

I agree with Form, I just finished watching and this one was very good. It's great value for money, it's the best one that I have bought from CA in that regard. Jason is obviously very passioned about the subject matter in this one and his enthusiasm keeps you interested throughout even if the topic is a heavy one. There is a great amount and variety of information and (for me) some real eye-openers, it's great that this was released as a download because I will definitely refer back to this a lot as I analyze my own work. If you are interested in making art that's solid right down to the core, you should get this.

Keep doing them like this Jason.

I'm downloading this and just watched the tonal pattern part. I saw about ten seconds of it and then I knew this was the shit! The Lady of Shalott is such a complex composition tonally. One thing I notice I have problems with when i try to build a scene is I run out of values. I try to think about light against dark and grouping values to create a solid structure, but when i get to the focal area I'm not sure where I'm going to go. I guess I should study more master pieces to find answers!

Can we post questions here Jason? I've just watched 15 minutes and already there are things I'd like to ask you.

Oh this just made my day. Since I caught the streaming class on composition, I've really wanted to have something long term to refer back to.

Add to that the fact it's all helping this site out, and there's no down side. Awesomesauce, I shall be downloading the minute I get home!

Oh, and can I second the colour theory download. Watched the streaming class and it transformed the way I see light and colour. Would love a download, or even a chance to pay to watch the streaming session again. *excitement explode*

I too would like to throw my support in for a colour theory download. Would be a definite buy from me, as would any downloads of the streaming classes.

Just sayin :)

Jason you're officially my hero!

I would've paid $300 for it, if I had it. Unfortunately, I don't even have the $30 right now.. :(

Downloading now. 2,5 gigs, bajebus!
If it's half as good as the color theory class it's a total steal for the 20 euros I paid for it. I feel almost criminal haha.

don't want to get off topic, but thought id offer a small reply to David's query re: value structures.

serpian: obviously the subtleties of composition are very much worthy of scrutiny, and that is up to you. but on a purely process/technique level, you may consider this 'quick fix' when painting digi.

when you are roughing out your B+w comp, and you find you have run out of value options for your focal -- it is likely a conservation issue. Ie, you have used your darkest dark or lightest light too early.

I run into this problem a lot and when i notice it, i open up levels and i slide the bottom slider (below the histogram) closer to the middle. Ie the left triangle slides in to the right, and the other vice versa. The result is your darks get lighter and your lights get darker, once again freeing up your top and bottom 10-20% to slap around in your focal point. Its kind of like a glaze over an oil painting that you can then work your extremes back into. I know its simple advice, but perhaps there are those here who will find some use in it!

I downloaded this yesterday and have just finished watching the first section, and the amount I have learnt in those 30 minutes is amazing. I am already beginning to look at paintings and images in a whole new way, my eyes have really been opened to how the compositions were actually made. I am so glad that I bought this video now, and that it was available to me, as I don't feel I'm currently at the skill level to start creating whole pieces, but when I do this knowledge will already be there for me, so I can keep it in mind when I begin creating compositions. I doubt I would have ever found out much of this information if I went about it myself.
Thank you Jason for giving us this information, and to everyone who helped to make the video! :D

This is definitely the best $30 I have spent, I can easily say it's worth a LOT more than the mere $30 Jason charges for this.

Buy it!

Learning from past masters is definitely the way to go. My first painting teacher, Jerral Derryberry introduced me to what he calls the "Bible of Composition" -- The Composition of Outdoor Paintings by Edgar Payne. Highly recommended.

One thing which you must always bear in mind in studying old paintings is that they are often trimmed down and so their original compositional forces have changed. The most obvious case in point: Rembrandt's so-called "Night Watch" (correct title, "The Shooting Company of Banning Cock"). The principal figures were originally farther to the right and once you see a copy of the original you can appreciate how different the composition was.

At any rate, the course looks like it will be something very worthwhile. Just wish I had information on price and avalibility.

I haven't seen this download, but I saw the streaming class on Composition, and it was amazing, easily worth the $95. To be able to see this for $30 is an incredible privilege... if you're hesitating, don't! Support your art and CA's future!

Eff it. I think I'm gonna buckle down and buy this myself despite having notes from the stream. It's worth it to support the site.

This was originally made before the streaming class, but because something was corrupt (I'm not too sure what was exactly, I'm not very good with computer stuff!) they were unable to finish it. So Jason did a streaming class on it instead. Now they managed to recover it, so we have both! :D

Ugh, I really wanna download this video. I'm extremely interested in everything regarding foundations (since I'm total noob ok). As soon as I figure out how this onlinebanking stuff works I will. Or is there any way to order it from a german bookstore? It's a shame I don't know such stuff but I've never bought anything online before.

is this composition video any different than the online class I already took from Jason several months ago for 100 bucks... if so are you bring all of live streams to download versions. Lastly, will there be a Christmas or new years sale.

I've read some stuff regarding this and it's never really come together for me. Having watched it all with examples and Jason tying it together it seems so obvious what's happening in each painting. Having already bought it I feel safe saying this lesson is probably worth a lot more then what's being charged. I don't even sketch without thinking about what I've learned from this, and I'm already watching the lessons a second time through.

Thanks Jason for doing this comp class. I don't know if you remember my work from the port reviews but the one thing that you kept getting on me about with my pieces was composition. I had been wondering for years why my work was not getting the kind of response I wanted from judges in different areas. They always said my figure work was great then never explained why the work wasn't accepted. Thank you so much. You've done me a real solid whether you know it or not :mod:

Wow! If that’s the kind of work you'll be using to teach count me in! Rembrandt, Vermeer, Klimt, Carravaggio (will you be teaching swordsmanship with that!?), Waterhouse, Goya, Sargent, it’s a smorgasbord! The Impressionists and Pre-Raphaelites seem to figure heavily too, and that is where my heart is. YUM!!

Every now again you come across something that expands your mind in an almost visceral way and I feel that these lectures have done just that for me when it comes to understanding classical art. Somehow it feels like you've gained a new pair of eyes to look at art with. Thank you very much Mr Manley! :)

Thanks for putting this up Jason. I have a question about this in relation to the streaming class. I already took the 95 dollar streaming class, since the information is mostly the same, is it possible to somehow get this for free? I feel gypped having paid 95 dollars, only to have the same information for 1/3 the cost not even 6 months later. A partial refund would be a nice gesture too.

$95 is probably the greatest deal you could ever get for this kind of information, you definitely did not get "gypped" so suck it up and use that knowledge to your advantage knowing that private art schools demand several thousands of dollars for what Jason gave you.

Finally got to knuckle down and watch this in one sitting this week, and I've not stopped thinking about everything since. In the same way the colour theory livestream did, it's really changed the way I look at images I love, makes me see why it is they work, and really makes me want to get into trying myself.

And as far as feeling hard done by... I paid the $95 for the colour theory class, and would happily, happily pay more for a permanent download of the same information, more concisely presented.

Speaking of which, Jason, are there any plans for a foundation of colour and light download, along the same lines as this?

Hey Marco,

There isn't any music playing while Jason is talking haha!
The video is very well produced and edited, and the info is presented clearly and concisely.

I just finished watching it last night and honestly there's a tonne of info Jason has covered. I'm not just saying that. I was one of those that took Jason's 95 dollar streaming class on composition and this video presents the same info and more! It's a great supplement to those who have already taken the class. Especially now that the sales on, its a great bargain O_O. Six videos on different aspects of composition coming up to 2.3gb of info for the price of a regular download + 33% off :D

There's a short review i suppose haha. One of the more informative MB downloads in terms of info and content if not the most.

Cheers
