Join 18 time Chesley Award winner Donato Giancola in his Brooklyn studio for three days as he creates his latest space masterpiece, The Mechanic.
Donato begins the DVD by taking photographic reference, used to add a high degree of realism and detail to his thumbnail sketch. Work on the the actual oil painting gives him opportunity to cover everything from the delicate subtleties of portraiture to eye-popping metallic surfaces. Throughout the video Donato generously passes on his years of experience and ends by inviting the viewer to surpass his own accomplishments. Massive Black and ConceptArt.Org welcome the viewer to rise to the occasion!

Holy crap I cant wait, I was at the Illustration Master Class 3 weeks ago and Donato announced that he was coming out with a CA dvd though he didnt say when. Is it going to be several hours like Dan's? and is it going to cover his drawing or is it just strictly oil painting?

Donato is a phenomenal artist with a hugely impressive body of traditional artwork under his belt. Well worth looking into if you're not familiar with his output. He has that WOOOOOOOW factor with the majority of his offerings. He's done some absolutley beautiful work based on LOTR. Classic and memorable. Also some more recent works like dead mermaids washed up on the beach. Just jaw dropping stuff!

Thanks for your interest everyone.
It's going to be 5 hours long. It begins with a photo shoot of his model and ends with a final painting.
The editing is finished... now it's just a matter of cleaning up audio, making menus, getting proofs of the DVD, and so forth. This process can take awhile, unfortunately, so my guess is that the release date will be the week after next. We'll have a couple other solid releases between now and then, though.
The video was shot in HD, but it looks like there's not enough demand to release it on BluRay so right now it's looking to be DVD or downloadable.
Cheers. :)

I went to Syracuse just after he graduated... he's a legend there. Roger Demuth, his teacher has a print of his student work... yeah its pretty much as good as his pro work. Also he did a comic for a school comic book for fun...yeah, it looked like it was at way higher caliber than the rest of us. So needless to say, I have been waiting a while to see his work.

Oooh...can't wait. When when when? I love Donato's work...especially his scifi subject matter. Reminds me so much of an old favorite - Jim Burns. I wonder if there was any connection there.

question about the dvd vs the download. If I buy the download and later want to get the dvd do I have to buy it again? When will the dvd be out? I am going to illuxcon in mid November and Donato is supposed to be there, will he have some dvd's there to sell? Can I purchase the download and then get the dvd at illuxcon if I show some sort of proof of purchase?

They're not interchangeable. So, yes, you would have to buy it again. He should have his DVDs to sell by mid November but as of yet they haven't been manufactured.

Awesome download. I've been a fan of Donato since my student days and it was a real pleasure to see his process. What i found confusing was that when he applied water to the image side of the paper why the printer ink didnt run? is it just the fact its on a strathmore paper or is the ink waterproof? Anyone know?

I just finished watching this. It was a very interesting and illuminating experience! Thank you for taking your time to produce this! The Mechanic is definitely one of my favourite paintings of yours now. That one of the Hobbit that was showed in the video is great too. On a technical note, this video shows that Massive DVD have solved some of the problems with sound they had in earlier videos, and also learned that background music can be very annoying when someones talking (this is true of the Zhanglu videos as well, the music there isn't annoying at all). So that's great!
Only a small crit about the painting itself. It wasn't until you actually painted the magnet and talked about it that i realized it's supposed to touch the torpedo tube. All along, looking at the finished painting, I had read it as the tube being several meters behind the mechanic, just outside the oval entrance to the loading bay. And when you added that structure going from beneath the tube to in front of her feet, you confused me completely. Now I don't know how to read the tube at all!
Other than that, the painting is absolutely lovely, I love the roundness of the head, and the shiny metal is just gorgeous, especially on the scratched shoulder. And the star field! So beautiful!
Regarding what you said about San Diego Comic Con, I really hope I can make it to one of those some time and meet you and all my other heroes! Thanks again!

I have only watched the first two parts so far, and I'll edit this once I have finished watching it all. It's been very interesting to watch, and there are a lot of things I never knew artists actually used or did to achieve the best effects in their paintings.
Donato makes it look so easy as well! When he is picking his colours, to me it seems like he is just picking them at random, but of course he has a lot of experience, and knows what he is doing. I also like how he describes his mixed paints as "mud" :P and how he explains why he is using certain colours, and explaining how it will affect the rest of the painting. It has linked a lot of knowledge from Jason's composition video for me, and shown me how other artists use this knowledge in their work.
I also have to agree that with no music in the background, it is a lot easier to focus on what the artist is saying and how he is working. Also I could hear Donato speak clearer than I have been able to in previous videos. The camera picture is very sharp and clear too, so we can see the values and subtle shifts when he is decribing them, and the secondary camera to show his palette when he mixes is very helpful as well.
Thank you for taking the time to produce this! :D
