View Full Version : Newborn - Mutated Dandelion, Greetings from the Hatch, Compiling (FINAL)

Thought of using one of my speedpaint practice as the basis for my Newborn entry. Since this is my first time joining CA contest so I sort of nervous and all the best to other contestants too. :)

==============================

Mutated Dandelion

My first idea is a mutated dandelion plant pollinate its seed and being observed by a duo of scientists. I wanted to capture a magical feel when the dandelion pollinates even though the scientists is equipped with hi tech gadgets.

==============================

Greetings from the Hatch

When a mysterious sphere start to ooze a glowing green liquid, a specialist group called the Alien Reconnaissance Team was sent to the location for investigation. What they will encounter is yet to be known...

Here is a larger version of the artwork as the rules ask for the submitted work to be resize to 1000px width which makes panoramic/wide images looks small.

==============================

Compiling

Did this piece at the very last minute after seeing Tron Legacy trailer. I always wonder how a software is compiled in the virtual world. For this piece I did the lineart in Paint Tool SAI and colour in Photoshop. Didn't use any 3D software to aid me on the wireframe look. Just good old eyeballing and hand drawn wireframe.

Not my best piece but still pretty fun to draw.

I will post a step by step picture for all three entry later.

I hate to post after myself but my latest progress:

I still haven't finalized the colour scheme so any suggestions?

I like the color on the right more and also in the the second concept how the soldier was looking at the plant instead of his comrade seemed better to me. Like it was more relaxed and they were just enjoying watching it fly away. The way he looks at him now makes me think he is asking him how they could shoot it down.

@FalyneVarger: Thanks for your feedback. I decided to go with the second colour mood.

Also my latest progress on the work.

Coming on in leaps ond buds Hueyyeng. Nice shapes, nice colour control and an over all feeling of something magnificent going on. Seems like the perfect blend of ingredients to me.

That is a very very nice colour palette there really brings out all the details in the piece much more than the bright one did. Cant wait to see the outcome of this piece will definitly keep following it. Cant help thinking having more of these things floating or growing further in the background would look great too. I think it deserves a more poetic/romantic name than 'Mutant Dandelion'.

Great work!

@Nickillus: Thanks! Will try my best for it. :)

@RoyCook: Yeah I'm bad with naming. I will come out with a better name when I finish the work.

Current progress. Still going real slow due to real life issues. Hope to complete it by this Sunday.

you should remove the city in the background
its ruining the eerie mood of that piece and its distracting....

i second. While i dont find it distracting, it seemed better to me when it didnt have shapes that resembled city buildings in the background. It read more as some weird, strange, unique place, but with those shapes it just brings it a human resemblance... and takes away from the..different-ness it had before.(thats my new word, different-ness)

Huey Yeng
July 13th, 2009, 12:57 PM
@moonchild, riotorange: I appreciate your feedback and guess what in the end I remove the building as I find it distracting too from the main subject!

Nearing to completion and I still not sure what to touchup now. Going to give it a break and return later to see if it still needs extra care or just plain done before I change my mind.

Great mood! Love the colors too.
I just think that his ass is very huge!

MoonChilD
July 13th, 2009, 01:30 PM
well you know what,
you could shrink the right guy's ass, even with an armor its too big
and the guy on the left is boring ,so maybe you can make him hold a miniature version of the flower with a faint reflection on his helmet
or make him typing on a computer /analyser with a green glow on his front body and face...that would improve it but it would be subtle....

take care

Huey Yeng
July 14th, 2009, 01:56 AM
Randis: Duly noted. I reduce the size of the ass. O_O;
Moonchild: I play around with your idea and added a holographic-esque computer. Not sure about adding a glow to his body though but I will try again later and see if it works with the overall composition flow. :)

My latest progress. Going to call it a quit or I will change my mind again which is bad news for me.

Heya, this look awesome!
The only thing that seems wierd to me is the soldiers right hand, holding the root. The root isn't flexed, and its throwing his sense of weight off for me, because he doesn't seem grounded on the slope he is standing on =/

Other then that, awesome!

MoonChilD
July 14th, 2009, 08:01 AM
looks better now, no?:)
a little and faint glow wouldn't hurt

about the root yes ,it seems small to get the big guy standing that way, either you make
a rotation or skew of the guy on the right or make a stronger vine

Looks pretty finished to me Hueyyeng. Nice atmospheric stuff.

Put it to one side and only look at it again with a week to go. If there's anything glaringly obvious you want to change, you'll most likely spot it then and still have time to act on it.

Huey Yeng
July 14th, 2009, 01:18 PM
corza334: Thanks for the input. Planning to redo the vines. :)
Moonchild: I did play around with the glow and it looks better atm. Going to further touch it up.
Dissar: Thanks!
Nickillus: I will be taking a break from this piece now and see it again later. Appreciate your feedback. :)

My latest progress of the work. Did some cleanup and touching up some part of the work. I think I will call it a quit on this.

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g116/picturebits/newborn_leaves11-copy.jpg

I have another silly idea playing with the idea of newborn. Wanted to portray a group of friendly creatures/aliens coming out from a huge egg and greets with the locals who are sort of stunned with their appearances.
Here's a rough speed painting of it with placeholder for the characters.

AsiST: I wanted to add in some warm lighting hence the lava stuff. Not sure if thats a good move.

I'm pretty much exhausted with my second piece. Need to unwind myself after reworking it a few times. Going to look back at it later to see if it needs any changes.

I like your dandelion entry, and your second one is looking really good. I'll have to be honest though the scientist on the right in your dandelion entry has some odd shaped buttocks pads which has kind of put me off a bit, but great colouring on the whole.

Huey Yeng

Gail_Blitzy: Thanks! :)
Belinda Morris: I really suck in designing buttocks pads. D: Going to do more research on that since it still bothers me too. Thanks for the head up.

Some progress on the second piece.

Nice idea of the display either.
Hmm. Perhaps it would look even more impressive, if you not only place on "plant", but a whole field of them, like a colony?

And I think, the butt of the right person might be a bit to ... obvious.

the compositions and colors on both pieces are really awesome. the anatomy of the characters on both pieces is what throws me off a little bit though.

great works, both of them, l really like your use of colour and attention to detail, though the butt on that second scientist really stands out, hope you don't mind, i did a quick paint over of a possible design change for the butt pads, hope it will be of some help. :)

Final updates from me since I already submitted my entry.

Another TRON inspired piece. Decided to draw manga style since lineart fits the final look that I wanted to capture. Pretty last minute idea so is not the best piece but still fun to do. :)
