hey there guys here is something i had been working on the the bast 3 months and finally got done like a week ago.

i was comissioned to make a 3 foot dragon for a client. not only did i have to sculpt this guy out of super sculpey (which is super expenisve, excuse the pun lol) i had to mold him and make it cast it out of urethane.

so i decided to sculpt this guy in sections. here i'll show you all the processes it went through.

first up with the armature. i then started to sculpt the head first.

in the first pic i had my mom hold up this big guy because he was too top heavy and couldnt stand on his own (poor amature planning can hurt you down the line as this piece sorta did)

Oh man....that is a really sick dragon! Welcome back!

June 29th, 2009, 11:39 PM
ohhhhh O.o

such a dragon would fit on top of my door XD

just awesome O.o

and one question: if you use wood as base, do you mold it later on instead of baking it? or does it work with the wood inside?

Ah, this is wonderful. It's great to see the latest work collected together. Aside from the construction, the colors in your pieces really stand out. I can never seem to pull myself away from the clay long enough to get anything painted. I'm going to need a vacation from sculpting just to take care of that.

And the new dragon is already off and running. I'll be interested to see how you handle the wooden armature elements. I'm intrigued by your process, so I'll certainly be following along with the good work that's on the way.

Cheers!

Thank you for the dragon pictures, it helps me (and I am sure others) see things build up from the core elements in style. I can take this and hopefully realise my own creations.

Cheers, Adrian

here are some pics of the hulk, however these pics kinda suck ( i took them real fast before taking the bust to school and leaving it there on display)

will take some better ones once i get it back.

paint needs a little refining as well.

here is a comission job i'm working on for a client on deviantart.com

the client fully designed this character and the pose she wanted it in.

the creature is tiger women (sorry for the lack of a better name lol)

i havent finished refining the figure and it still needs a tail, but i'd say its like 90% done

Being a Venom fan, I have to say, that's really badass man. I like it! It's really reminiscent of the old and original Venom style. I'm glad you gave him more of a blue hue than a black hue, it really brings him out.

Zero i love the old style, i think it held much more personallity than the new ones that have been around lately, i dont like the just hulk like venom, the venom from the McFarlane era was def my fave. thank you for the kind words.

Bongsplat thank you my friend, i have more dragon pics on the way ;)

All excellent....don't have much to critique on. Although isn't Venom supposed to be black instead of blue?

man these are amazing!!! the venom vs carnage sculpture is off the hook man!!

fritofrito
August 2nd, 2009, 04:26 PM
madcross hello my friend! thank you for the kind words and yeah venom is supposed to be black, but i kinda designed this venom to be like is Marvel vs. Capcom version, which is blue. in his first appearences venom seemed to be blue with a lot of black shadows or i guess had a lot of blue high lights. so he's more of a throw back to the old classic venom rather than the new bulky ones.

i've also done a black venom before and i couldnt see any of the muscle work i did so thats another reason ;)

These last two pieces have been stellar. I'm particularly fond of your team-up sculptures (hero vs. villain). I like seeing the way you handle the challenge of energy, interaction, and overall composition. And who doesn't love to see Spider-man and Venom throwing down?

I hope your client is happy with your translation of the character. I do think it's one of your best. It has a classic, resin kit feel to it. The sort of look I'd expect to see in Hobby Japan magazine. Can you post up the original art so we can see the work you put into the piece?

I love the carnage and venom sculpture.
I just don't like the blue on venom, he doesn't feel as scary as he's suppose to.
Otherwise I think it is an awesome sculpture. great work

August 9th, 2009, 01:35 PM
Your Dragon is ridiculously awesome...I love it. How long did it take you to do that?
Definitely inspires me to wanna do a life size piece.

fritofrito
August 9th, 2009, 02:05 PM
Doggy i will be applying there shortly :)

Solaire thanks for the kind words, i knew that when i painted venom blue some people would be put off by it, sence he is normally known to be all black. but this was more of a throw back to the original mcfarlane era venom, i grew up on his classic style, where he was more of just a really huge guy in the costume, but had more of a classic hero look than that of a villian, than in the newer comics where he's more hulk like and scary. I have also always loved the design from the Marvel vs. Capcom game, and in that he is all blue.

As for the dragon, it took me like 2 months to sculpt and mold the thing. i've sold like 10 of them to people.

Solaire007

wow that is great...I have to get to that point where I do commissions. I just posted my first thread a couple of days ago.

Your statues are really badass, especialy the dragon!

One thing though, it bugs me how you didnt smooth the veins into Venom's skin enough, they don't look too correct the way you have em.
