brushes are just tools. It's what you do with them. I don't eliminate matte painting either, its how to get your idea across. (fair warnng, the matte painting better be damn good though...)

Paradise is derived from a Persian word meaning a walled garden.
And Chaos pulls me out of sweet slumber,,,
Most interesting is that the Judeo-Christian story begins with God floating above the Deep.

Hello all-
Er, First post. I'm brand new at this! But it sounded like great fun. I don't have much skill at characters or scenes or art in general, but I figured this'd be a great way to challenge myself, force myself to get better, eh?
Anyhow, thought I'd toss up my WIP before I headed off to bed and see what kind of reaction I could illicit.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b52/Ceres_Blitzanger/prime01.jpg
"In the beginning, there was a great, primordial stew full of amino acids and fishes and sunlight. A whale or a marsupial crawled up out of it. Or quite possibly an alligator."
I decided to go with something rather traditional and not very fancy for my first try. Here's my primordial stew. Why do the Gods get all the credit? Darwin helped!
A brand new world, scoured clean and ready for life to come pouring in. Well, animal life anyhow.
It's twice the size of this thumbnail, and not anywhere close to done. I'd appreciate Constructive crit if you have it! Not much to comment on, but what do you think so far?
Ah, Rabies, if you don't mind the crit, I'm not too keen on the great bright circles you've got there. I think the original was much more refined and pretty. : )
Matej, I'd go with the second thumbnail. It looks like it could have so much potential! But that's just me!

Time for a quick crit before bed methinks.
Rabies: Nice idea, but the colours are a bit strong, too vibrant, maybe mess around with colour schemes and try to get them more similar to each other?
Matejkovacic:I quite like the top left and bottom right thumbs, what's the idea of the top left? A godlike figure or a creation?
MoonStruckDragonLass:Welcome to the forums! It's not bad actually, I think with a little bit of work you could pull this idea through. I particularly like the left side of the WIP, the tree and the rocky bit are well rendered for such an early WIP. Get the rest of the painting up to that standard and we'll see where you an take the idea from there huh?
That's all for now guys, I'd enter but I'm looking for a decent Graphics tablet, and I'm more of a CHOW or POW guy anyway.
Nice work all round, just keep at it!

I drew what came into my head, which is a creature that creates worlds, as a kind of creation myth. I tried to make the planet the focus but I'm not sure it worked out that way. Any suggestions to make this better? I was thinking of reducing the size of the creature in relation to the planet and taking out the sun to improve the focus.
I even added a Myth poem to do with the red harvest moon :)
Wyrm of heavens,
In darkness ranges,
Travels twixt the stars,
To gather dust,
Of systems dead,
And bring them to birthing ground,
By living stars,
Forming new worlds,
In every corner of the Cosmos,
And every year,
He visits his works,
To watch the harvest grow,
Always travelling,
We catch a glimpse,
When the moon does redly glow.

I decided to take a different approach to this. Instead of going mythological or philosophical, I thought it might be neat to show a level being created by game developers, who are actually INSIDE the world they're creating, interacting with the mesh through weaving, pulling, and stacking.
I think I might abandon this now, just 'cuz I'm really busy. So I just decided to post this WIP. I might pick it up as a personal project when I have the time though.
I'd say it's 20% done now. The idea isn't really being clearly conveyed right now.
But it was kind of a fun experiment so far.

Not a very original direction, but im trying to show men establishing a new world; their initial approach upon something pristine which hasn't faced outside corruption during its early life - the first colonizable world found by man outside the solar system. I think the second image is closer to what I want, with new, shallow springs. Should be better with some otherworldly plantlife.

Dude, Corrick, nice to see you're back :) Haven't seen you post in a while. I like the general atmosphere you've got going there. All the elements in there seem to be floating around a bit too much though, I think. They could use a few more clues of being part of the same structure maybe. Also, what about a few things in the foreground?
Jakers
July 6th, 2009, 05:11 AM
I agree with yoitisi - a few more elements and this could be awesome - it feels like a great start and I was definately curious upon first glance.
I need to rework some things, but heres the color so far on my new world. Advice so far is to drop the ships down and make them more of a focal point, since they ARE I suppose what will form the new world for mankind in the description.

Corrick- Don't listen to them. I think it is absolutely fantastic the way it is!
Though I'd like the see the robotic arm a little more clearly, however, and perhaps I would put a few things in to the left, just to show scale. . . .
I don't understand how you manage to get such clean, clear, lovely colours. I can never manage shades like that. What program do you use?

I do love the idea as well Zirnbigism, definately has a cool concept behind it. Its a hard one to make feel 'natural' because we're soo used to moving all those polys by oursleves hehe. I think if you put on natural feeling textures, or simplified them into colored geometry with some atmospheric effects it would be much nicer. The texture right now (though its in the making for the people there) is a bit crazy.
I updated this to enhance the focal points of the ships a bit further, hopfully its better.

July 8th, 2009, 12:41 AM
yoitisi, Jakers, thanks for the comments and the suggestions, all very much appreciated (and hopefully implemented)! I posted it up in a pretty amorphous state so there was definitely plenty to do.
Jakers, your ships seem a little flat against the gorgeous environment you've worked up. A little more depth on those and it'll sell the piece wonderfully!
MoonStruckDragonLass, thank you as well, and I use Photoshop CS3. Don't be silly either, you can most certainly manage shades like this. Picking your color pallet is one of the most important steps in my opinion. Light and color can sell almost anything. Now update your piece!

yes, please.
Don't want to be a pain in the butt but EOW is moving really slow compared to the other rounds. It always takes forever for new topics to start or even the poll being set up. I know it has partially to do with the sparse participation, but maybe some topics just don't spawn enough interest and we should simply move ahead. I will also try to take part a little more again...

About deadline issues. If chaos has work issues, then someone, who's willing and have enough free time, should take her place temporarily, like Poshspice and daestwen do in character community activity. Anyone? ;)

Tonic- that sketch is BADASS! You should post it up in the final thread even though its... dead.... Whats going on here? Is EOW shutdown? I agree with you guys that we need to get this thing rolling on a timely basis. More people will participate + take it seriously if it goes as regularly as CHOW.. IMO we should also focus more on concrete topics to get a steadier attendance (it always seems the conceptual prompts turn people off).

Thanks, Mishkin :) I don't worry much about finals, if I'll be too late, it's alright. About the silence, chaosrocks have work issues. I repeat, we need someone who would replace her temporarily.. that would solve the problem.

I actually agree with you. I've been waiting for awhile for a decent topic, but just havent seen anything really all that interesting. Call me crazy but topics like "cyberspace" "The Bridge Between two Very Different cities" "spiritual retreat" seem overly generic and is probably a contributing factor to the lack of popularity or overall participation in EOW. I don't have a solution so i'm pretty much just complaining, i just wish we saw more interesting topics cause for a loooong time, they've been pretty bad, and the participation numbers can prove it. We've had good ones here and there but they've been few and far between... anyway, that's just me being a "pain in the butt"

Ben Mauro did an awesome project while in school where he depicted the inside of Skinner's apartment from Ratatouille - something that was never in the movie, and a challenge to build something inside the universe that already exists is something that intrigues me. Maybe some topics where you have to inject a story into the image will help make (most) everyone happy... we've already done Dracula's castle, maybe think of some other well known characters whose homes/lairs/habitats would be neat to design?
Something Alice in Wonderland like would be neato, too, what with the new movie coming out and all the crazy variations one can make on things like a Mad Hatter's Tea Party. :teeth:
And stop complaining so much! Make moar suggestions, peeps.

Everyone would like to work on Sherlock Holmes's Living Room or Steampunk Venice but what happens if we are asked to design My Little Ponies' Stables?
IMHO we should be prepared to work on everything is thrown at us. A professional (or an aspiring pro) can't whine if he/she asked to work on something he/she doesn't like.

rev.. the steampunk concert hall was a flop...
thanks for the support Jessi
the following are the Eow challenges that were from specific sources
Coleridge's Xanadu
Tribute to Blade Runner
rapunzels tower
castle Chariot, from th e once and future King
Two houses both alike in dignity (Romeo and Juliet)
Milliways:The restauant at the end of the universe
Dracula's castle
there may have been others
I am un comfortable with assuming that we all have the same literary back ground and asssuming , for instance that all of us are familiar with Alice (although Alice is a good one) BUt you can't really assume that everyone saw ratitoullie. But I have tried to do a fairly large number of challenges based on archtypes. (valhalla, battlestation, Unicorn Valley..etc etc
Unfortunately most people participate when it's easy and not when it's difficult. So although my preference is for challenges that actually test the metal of the artists and make them think. ... most people seem only want to do it if the image is aleady in their mental data banks which tends to lead to shiny but trite solutions. the challenges that intrigue me are those that really have never been portrayed ... So I will muddle along as best as I can.... and people will bitch about it no matter what I do. For example if I make it a strict week... everyone hollars that it isn't enough time. If I stretch it out I get yelled at for moving topics along too slowly.....go figure
Corrick
July 31st, 2009, 12:36 PM
Don't dumb down the topics, let people do the research. Chaos, you keep right on testing people's mettle.
There's a suggestion thread full up with ideas, more getting added all the time.
EOW is just a different animal. People are gonna do it or they're not. The topics are going to be, by their nature, fundamentally different than CHOW or COW. And I can honestly say most people just don't want to try to make something interesting.
Chaos, great job. Maybe two weeks overdue is frustrating, but it's better than not having an EOW at all. I'm in for the Thieves Den.
MoonStruckDragonLass
July 31st, 2009, 01:51 PM
Here here, Corrick, I agree!
Chaos, you do a brilliant job. I considered grumbling about the slow move on, but then I realized I couldn't make last round's deadline, even after it was 'extended', because I was over scheduled and then ended up on vacation without a tablet. I took the time instead to brush up on my fundamentals, and figured that if you weren't just over-extended at work, that you or someone you knew may have been in trouble, or that you had a wedding, etc.
I feel like environments that are creative and different are hard to come up with and hard to be good at, which is why EOW sees low participation. I myself consider it a weak point, so that why I go for it. It's easy to come up with Bob, you can relate to a character so much better, as you yourself are a character. So many people dismiss the environments they live in, so many people see backgrounds as something you bs so your character doesn't have a white backdrop, that I don't think EOW is going to see the kind of participation that CHOW gets. It's just a harder, more noble topic that not everyone can be good at. Personally, I look at the examples and winners, and I just feel like this little corner of my mind opens up, and the ideas flood in. I feel like new worlds really are opening to me, that I really can be good enough at this some day. Most art doesn't make me feel like that. Most art makes me feel like I'm not good enough. I'd be rather devastated if we lost EOW.
I am looking forward to participating when it is both easy and difficult. I like a little challenge! I'm all in for Thieves Den. Got my sketches in progress, though I'm not sure if I should take it Ali-Babba style, or put my own twist on it. . . Already so many ideas!
Chaos you do a fantastic job! Don't stop!
But I still think you should use the idea of 'Twin Pyramids' >: D

hey I wasn't exactly complaining about the topics, was I? I Just pointed out that some topics don't spawn much interest (and that is due to many reasons) which was a simple observation from my side. :P I did complain about the slow progress with rounds and wrapping up the ones that show meager participation which I assume many could agree with, no?
