Wednesday - good work, and keep them coming :D

LadyLioness - not bad for your second sp, just try to measure with your pencil to help get the right praportions. keep them coming

Oblio - wow haven't seen you around to much, but i am glad to see you poping by every so often :D that pic makes me want to yawn

keyth - that is really good! i hope to see you around here more this year :D

Killing.people - thank you so much for your words :D i appreciate it very much!!

ok here is mine as usual it is 25 minute sp late last night

Happy New Year's guys!

Mine was busy, how was all of yours? Sorry for the poor presentation. I made a resolution to do these at once a day again regardless. Hopefully I can stay true to my word.

http://www.snitzerart.com/images/spod/spod226.jpg

Keyth - Nice to see you again, I've been as lazy with the self-portraits as you have :D

Oblio - My robot army is preparing itself, you ready?

J.Mac - Nice work, good improvement. Let the good roll with the bad, it all still gradually improves over time. It's like leaving a crappy sketch in a sketchbook. You know it sucks, but it's kind of like the story of your development.

Wednesday - Welcome, face looks great, ear looks kind of distracting. Nice and simple though.

LadyLioness - Be careful of the eyeform, you almost made it too literal, like a football. Check the axis of the face as well, this one has a slight curvature to it. Keep the work coming though and happy new year.

Hey guys thanks for the comments, i always try to keep them in mind. i didnt see your comments till after i was done with my 3rd portrait, which when i scanned it, i could see all the wrongs -.-''. bleh so i set off to do my 4th sp..ehhh it didnt come out so great also. http://volcano.photobucket.com/albums/v11/ladylioness/sp3n4.jpg

BTW how do you guys do your self portraits? just look at a mirror, take a dig pic or?

hmm i cant wait till i do a sp of myself and it actually having some sort of resemblence of me. i should make myself do two a day instead

EDIT:

1-1-04 - 4:56 AM
"OH NO SHE DID ANOTHER ONE...RUN!!"
couldnt help but do another one, im seriously having a lot of fun. err this was more of a bad scribble than a sp but its still a sp so here it goes. btw i should spend more time of these next time

LadyLioness:

i think you need to concentrate more on form and shape instead of just jumping into a portrait with line.

take your time with measurements. and i suggest completely forgetting about shading them until you can understand how to pull off the shapes.

your linework seems very sketchy and rushed, there's no need for half of a lip to be completely different as the otherside, visually sketch out the shape of the lip until it matchs, then go for the detailed line work.

keep them up.

http://asbestoshazard.com/art/040103%20self.jpg

I used a mirror (my cam is...finished) and did a quickie sketch-style out of painter, you can see where I started to get lazy. : /

Keyth :: I am lovin' the colors packed into your first and the simple line in the second.
Oblio :: Talk about expression!
LadyLioness :: Keep up all the good practice, I particularly like the one with your hair pulled back (the latest one sans hoodie!)
Wednesday :: Nice work with the angle in the second one, nice colors, too -- makes me want to try some.
J.Mac :: Nice job with the pencils, I like the smirk.
Blackhawk :: Stunning as per usual! You always look so very cool and reserved. : )
dns2k :: I like the muted color choices.
endregan :: You're going where I have yet to tread by braving color! Awesome!
Ni* :: Nice work with the tablet, strong highlights in that one -- it's so hard to get used to staring at a screen while your hand fiddles about elsewhere <_>
Nunch :: Dude...you could almost make some fun vector work out of that.

Keyth: I really admire how you pushed so much color on that. looks great.

LadtLioness: I like your most recent two because they seem to have an actual face structure. Not just eyes, a nose, and a mouth pasted into a head shape. Watch the placement of th ears. look in the mirror where they are compared to your mouth and eyes as far as height.

everyone else: great stuff so far.

Railboy - that's lovely. Surely you can sketch a SP once in a while.. a recent one ;) (boy i wish i could stick to that sketchbook like you guys)

coro - my friend... i've seen it before and didn't find any words. rock on.

j.mac - you are doing VERY well - i'm not sure i can do that :) you make me want to study more. Don't worry - the measurements will stick with you always.. so... you can fool around.

oblio - that's sick and ugly. don't ever post here again!!!

k.p - man it's good to have you back around. :chug:

Blackhawk - umm... umm... :bash: DIE DIE DIE :bash: :D

jook - :D he he

Phantom head - that's a sweet face and a lovely drawing - especialy for a phantom.. realy (like.. welcome to the freaky area)

jook - i knew you can do that.

lady.imbria - lovely. boy i need to visit the middle class more often - i'm missing all the fun.

wed. - ahh.. that impossible tool.

endregan - pay more attention to the form. keep em coming! you're on the very right track!

lady.lioness - add a strong light (a lapmp or something) - it will help you see the form. measurea and look look look - pay more attention. also try and play with the pencil by holding it differently (near the end of it, or look at how kevin Chan holds the graphite) - it might help with the line (yours is a bit hairy).
And keep at it - all i ever learned (if i ever did, but i was far worst then you) was by doing SP's :D

azbesto... - yeah... you look so happy :p come on.. bring some more - one will not be enough here. look and Android :D

DAVI - (in toon portraits) - You got SO MUCH better. You realy rock. Super pieces man. Respect!

skank - you are becoming the hulk

BH - :D nice

Oblio - thanks man i appreciate that and i guess you are right. i just feel i need to be perfect everytime i pick up my pencil or stylus :D

LadyLioness - you are doing good work, and i am glad to see you being dedicated. "imo" i feel you should start to measure and see where features line up on your face. study anatomy alittle so you can understand the form of the head and what is going on underneath. measure, measure, measure and then mark, this will help you see what is going on better. So keep at it!! practice practice practice :D

Railboy - that is very interesting!

el coro - that is cool :D you should post you other sp's if you do any here! i really like the colours and how it is a montage of sp's

endregan - oh i just noticed this, include the neck :D unless you are magic floating head :P

here is mine well um yeah it is ehh.... ok i guess.... i think i am going to do some sp's with different materials or somehting. i was distracted by video games, so i was giving my full attention on this one :D

Wednesday - Thank you. Try to control those values, if you start working too many values in you will lose control of the form. Keep up the work, try to make it daily :D

Ni - Thank you. One trick I learned when doing SP's, which is also something I consequently learned in a portrait painting workshop, is I go into my SP with a focus. Is my focus on values, on likeness, on emotion, on etc..... I find it makes for a much more satisfying and less frustrating experience. If I can nail my focus I was striving for, I still get the positive vibe like I've accomplished something. I used to be on the same boat as you where I'd be in a sour mood during the process because I almost felt kind of lost in it all. I create bad art when I feel unduly rushed, frustrated, pissed, etc. I don't like making bad art :) Keep it up though bud, your doing great so far, keep pushing it.

J. Mac - Thanks. Your doing great so far, maybe try a different approach to your process and stir things up. Your approach is similar across all of your SP's. My advice, shake it up, think outside the box, go for a different angle at your SP's. See what happens, you might be surprised and like the results. They are getting better though.

Oblio - Who let you in here? I thought we kicked you out of here :P Stop picking your nose too! My t-dome designs are coming along, how about yours?

Abestoshazard - Thank you. This last one of yours is very nice. The jacket become kind of a scribble mess, but the face is tied together nicely. Watch the level of the eyes though, you have my old problem, one is higher than the other. It's hard to catch at first, look out for it. Keep them coming.

Phantom Head - Nice SP, good form on this, eyes look funky though. I think the left one on the picture is either slightly looking over rather than straight, or the eye is further to the side than it should be. Other than that, nice work.

LadyLioness - Art is a very long process. Improvement isn't something that will happen instantly. It takes some people 6 months to grow into what others may take a year or two years to grow into. It entirely depends on if you stick with it. These last two are steps on the way to where you want to be, some will be more difficult than others. In that vein, I'll throw out some nuggets of advice. Watch the form of the mouth, don't necessarily think of it as an outline. Usually, where the lips meet there will be a much darker area. So you may want to work on different line values, line widths, etc. to pull areas closer or farther back. Plus it will draw emphasis to spots and overall help the form of the SP. Instead of the facial features looking pasted on, they will start to integrate into the face.

Keep practicing, if you need some clarification or help, let me know.

El Coro - You are the man. Beautiful work. I wish I had half the balls with my color that you do. Color scares me shitless, you seem to laugh in it's face. Nice.

Endregan - Thanks man. Good to see your still going at it. Watch the line variations. If your doing a straight line only portrait, start working in different line values and widths. You need to start pulling and pushing the form with line only. Experiment, use darker lines to bring stuff back, forwards, use different widths to pull features forwards and backwards. Use it to emphasize spots. Keep hammering away at it.

Sorry I didn't hit everyone's tonight. It's late, gotta be up early. Thanks for contributing to this thread guys and gals.

elven, it is really odd going from a piece of paper to a drawing tablet and photoshop or painter, but it gives you far more freedom and an infinite collection of tools, not to mention the undo button. these dont mean shit if you cant draw though,

oh and ladylioness, some advice that i was givin when i was in highschool, my teacher would tell me to picture the skull of the face first and then integrate teh features within the skull. jseuf- markers eh? despite being design trained i never really got to grips with markers and never did anything beyond quick sketches so i'm very impressed with that SP!

ladylioness- you have the shape of your face and i think you've been given some great advice so we're all waiting to see the huge improvement in your next works ;-)

cheeseboypaul- thank you for the compliment. that SP is really enjoyable to look at because it has so much character and expression.

phantom_head- blinkin flip!! the line art is lovely but the colour one is fantastic. you make me want to hop back to photoshop for my next effort. it has a really quite eerie feel to it, the only thing i can say is that the hair lets it down a little, it looks a little flat compared to the face.

thats all for now, again sorry if i miss anyone and sorry for not really giving critique, just oppinion

cheers

mmmmmm... photoshop....

quick sketch in PS to remind myself of how different it is to painter, i might come back to this one and increase the contrast or just block in the tones more.

i much prefer the pastel effect in photoshop to the one in painter classic.

(i need to move the mirror for the next one i think)

Ni - like the beginnings of that sketch...would look cool with a little more detail as well.

hmm, i know what you mean with the hair on my last one...i had the screen tilted the wrong way while working on it (flatscreen), and i thought i had effectively taken care of the hair by making it almost the same as the background. i was pretty surprised to see it was actually visible when i posted:D
next time i'll be more careful...and i'll choose another angle - this is too weird looking

phantom_head - wow. that is really impressive. i'm blown away with the eyes. how did you get them to look so.. glassy?

just a sketch today, i'll work on colour for it and bring it back sometime soon.

elven- thanks, i will work into this one. it is the standard photoshop pastel with the 'preserve texture' setting. i think it gives a really nice effect, espcially with the opacity set to about 30% (i'm a colour wimp)

phantom- i think a few highlights on your hair would finish off that sp nicely. it would push the hair back and strengthen the shading. what brush did you use for that?

elven- i will work into mine if you work into yours(not tonight though, i'm a little drunk) , deal? :-p we can see a more finished sp from each of us...

phantom_head - that is awesome!! i really like how you did that it is very impressive. i have to agree with the hair comments from other people. it def. brings the painting down some. for this painting what tools did you use?

LadyLioness - keep them coming and try to be aware of structure, basic shapes and such when you do your sp's.

ok here is mine. i have been busy working on my ThunderDome stuff. i have been up for about 30hrs now and i pumped this out it is ok i guess i had fun with it, but i can't touch what phantom_head did :xx:

this one started as a bit of a scribble and as usual fluctuated between ok and rubbish. i can see what is wrong with this one, most noticable are the eyes, they are off perspective, and being the first time i've drawn like this, i got confused between exlpaining structure and portraying shade.

was fun though

stormeffex- that first one is great, is it watercolour?

skank- cool, only thing i'd say is that the white t-shirt and the blue glow each fight for attention, so you end up looking at them instead of your face, know what i mean?

BH- rubbish as ever! nah i can even joke about that:-p
did u say u did a portrait class?

phantom- absolutely lovely, tell me you have had some training or at least years of practice? (the eyes are pretty big though)

jook- thats a good point, my trouble is that, in painter at least and with real media, i over work the portrait untill it is a muddy fuzzy mess.

i think i need to practice the basic drawing side of it more than i have. and i'm sure you know the good satisfying feeling that comes from a line in the right place, well yesterday i didnt get that feeling at all, untill the last one.

BTW, i liked your las SP, the left eye and cheek really stand out :-)

stormeffex- that colour one is cool, it has alot of atmosphere (but it does look like you're wearing a big curly wig with the yellow patches above your head)

good work all round, it means plenty inspiration!

jook

thanks for the compliments fellas...

http://stu.aii.edu/~jlw271/RedIam.JPG

requiem: that is pretty slick. you have a way with your highlights.. good. it is cartoony, yet detailed enough to be kinda believable.

J.Mac: I like your style you have for the past couple. You have heard it many times, but I looked at a few months agos sp threads and you have greatly improved. These last two would look great finished...

Blackhawk: I envy you for two reasons. A. you are damn good at this. B. Your bald head must make your life easier on these things, I suck at painting hair. good times.

Ni*: I dont know what to tell you about your overworked muddy problem you speak of. Mabey use a higher opasity with your brushes? I am not a professional, but my pics turn out muddy when I use a low opasity instead of take the time to hand pick my values. They look good though and I'll bet I'd be able to point you out of a crowd.

stormeffex: Those look good. I like the bottom one.

Blackhawk
January 15th, 2004, 07:00 AM
Inspired heavily by one of Dan Milligan's SP's. Dan, your one of my greatest inspirations, I love your style.

http://www.snitzerart.com/images/spod/spod235.jpg

Jook - Thanks. I wish my bald head made it easier. I found it a hell of a lot easier with hair, it seemed like I could get away with more and I didn't have to nail the skull form perfectly with a big tussel of hair on my head.

Watch your proportions and values. Your forehead in this one looks unnaturally large, almost like Frankenstein. It doesn't really have a round feel to it, more of a straight cylinder going straight up. Be careful of the eye shape and values as well. You threw in a too literal eyef form and it comes across as too cartoonish. Observe your eyes and how the line weights can vary. I notice on my eyes and the lighting they are in that my upperlid creates a much heavier shadow, so if I am going to represent that with lines, I'll darken the upper eyelid, and keep the lower lighter. Also, watch out for the pupils, they usually don't rest squarely in the middle of the eye like that.

Keep working at it bud.

Ni - I did like a head study workshop. It wasn't a portrait class persay. We came in and my instructor Clayton Beck showed us different approaches to doing head studies for our own practice. That way we could more comfortably begin our paintings. He usually didn't go much further and the initial block-ins on a lot of the stuff and didn't really want anyone else in the class going further either. I learned a hell of a lot in the workshop, he's a great teacher.

I'll comment on the rest I missed tomorrow, too late.

that was some great advice and feedback, after alot of frustration and analysis of my past attempts, i started to see that i had a huge perspective problem and the advice on eyes from blackhawk helped loads. i didnt realise how much the eyes force the angle of the face.

anyway here's a quicky for today, i tried to concentrate on the basic drawing and i think i finally nailed the angle of view from the mirror that is sitting quite low on my desk.

no feedback just yet... got some other things to do tonight, just to say BH thats superb, but you look completely psycho in that one, complete with middle distance stare and jutting jaw.

Thanks for that advise BH. I tried to incorperate it on this one. I see what you mean with the forhead thing. I have a big forhead, but admitadly not that big. I tend to try and get really fancy with these sp's. usually I end up overdoing them.

I think I am completely color retarded. I have to jump through hoops just to get the result I even remotely want instead of nailing it the first time. It feels very awkward and way too unpredictable.

http://www.snitzerart.com/images/spod/spod236.jpg

Jook, Ni - Nice improvement guys. Keep pushing that threshhold, be very observant of your values and the shapes they form on the face. Don't draw or paint the features, but draw and paint the different value and color shapes. It'll give a truer representation without all the struggle of trying to make an eye look like an eye.

cotron

blackhawk- a tip about color... in a post before, you said you try to have a focus in your sp's. with color, it's no different. color usually indicates mood, so see what kind of mood/temperature you want to give. experiment with the extremities of warm and cool colors, don't be afraid to push it too far. i would suggest to avoid the middle road with browns/greys for now and really punch it. try to have an imbalance of warm/cool... and keep doing it, you'll find combinations that work for you.

color theory is a personal thing, but i hope that i'm making some sense for you :)

Blackhawk
January 19th, 2004, 09:06 AM
Thanks for the advice Cotron. I actually dug up some of Kevin Chen's old stuff on color and lighting too and I'll be studying that stuff intently for awhile. I'm sick of not understanding what I'm doing when it comes to color. I'm determined now to figure this shit out.

expat. It looks good and I'd be willing to bet that it probably bears a strong resemblance to you. The one main thing if you are going for complete realism would be the eyes. I think you made them too big. A lot of people have the tendancy to make eyes too big, since they are what most spend the most time on.

you may be right that proportianately the eyes are maybe a little too big...the thing is I do have big eyes so I'm not sure if they're disproportionate or not...
the eye on our left maybe is a little to big at the bottom?

since we were looking at the eyes I did wonder whether they were slightly out of line, the eye on our left seems a bit too low maybe?

i'm planning on doing a colour version of this next

I've been lazy with these over the last week or so, but i think the time away helped a little, and now there have been too many posts to comment on them all at 1am, good work all round though.

what materials are you using for your SP's?
Are they all photoshop?

jook
January 26th, 2004, 01:26 AM
I am using Painter 8. this one looks photoshoppish because I used the airbrush tool. I just like Painter better.

wow it's been awhile since i've been here. this month's thread is great! i love all the feedback everyone is getting/giving and i am thoroughly enjoying bh's struggles...i understand your criticalness (did i make that word up?) bh but your portraits move me and that's why i think they're great. i'm listening to music that's making me all sentimental and sappy. haha.

i'm sharing one i did a few days ago. i'm playing with a crappy set of water colors and it looks nothing like me i think.

Hey,
Thanks for your encouragement J Mac, I was pretty pleased with the pencil drawing too- it seemed to capture not only a likeness but a sense of personality.
Then I went and coloured it and stuffed it up, oh well.

Here's a bunch that I knocked out today- I did them a bit faster than the other one.

http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/1003/expat/conceptart/sp.jpg

here I'm screwing up my face
http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/1003/expat/conceptart/sp1.jpg

http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/1003/expat/conceptart/sp2.jpg

This one is slanted because I had the sketchbook lying on a funny angle while drawing...dang
http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/1003/expat/conceptart/sp3.jpg

So yeah, I tried to experiment with different facial expressions and tried to see if I could convey different moods.

While I'm here:

dilation- I really like your description of form using tone instead of line, it really gives a sense of solidity to your portrait.

jook- I don't know how you churn out so many portraits, that's good dedication. As much as the portrait kinda disturbs me, the cross dressing one is probably the most solid one I've seen of yours. You've used more tone to describe shapes and maybe spent a little more time on that one I think (?). The earlier one with the green light is also good for similar reasons.

There are lots of other good ones too, I like killing.people's sp for the range of colours and that the eye draws me in and I also like City's smooth blending of tone...but I'm by no means an expert so I'll leave it there

Thanks

expat,
I think that you've got some interesting results out of your sketch-book experiments here :) facial expressions are well done... which also tells me that I should go back to my drawing board - sigh -

J. Mac -Thanks

Oblio - Lol, I see you have the verbal jabs down to an art my friend, but where is your real art? You post all these posts in here with no artwork accompanying it. :bash: ;)

Ilex - LOL, your a face I haven't seen in a few. Good to see my SP's are making someone other than myself all teary-eyed. Although I'm sure mine is more from laughing so hard at my own work  :p

Jook - You sure are getting crazy with the color on these last few. Try to stay mindful of the form though, use color to help express the form, work those cools and warms. Keep at it bud.

KP - Interesting SP, eyes look a little funky, I enjoy your new style though. Good work.

City - Unless those life drawing nudes are of yourself or some expression of yourself, just keep them for the life drawing forum :) Welcome BTW.

Expat - Great set of SP's, almost look like caricature's with the extreme expressions. Nice work.

Dilation - Kind of tiny, but great SP none the less, great form to it, the values are definitely working.

Kanimator - Nice set, really clean, good job on these man.

Koz - How's it going, haven't seen you in a bit. What's got you down?

BH - no problem :D i think you should push your sp's alittle further now :p with colour, perspective or materials/medium. i want to see you out of your comfort zone. does that make sense.... eh one of my instructors told me tha is what painting is ding for me right now. and tha i should try to do that every so often. just a thought BH great work as always.

expat - wow very expressive sp's i like them! they have alot of character to them like caricatures. there isn't really anyway to crit these pieces b/c of there expressiveness. good stuff :D

dilation - very cool! to bad it is so small oh well nice work!

jook - i have ot agree with BH :)

ilex - it has been some time! nice to see you pop by and drop off a sp. you are brave for using watercolours :D

killing.people - that is a very interesting sp i like how you went about it. the lines give it energy "imo" nice work :D

city - not a bad start but it is unfinished for the most part, but you already know that.

Kanimator - oooh very clean! i like those alot they are crips and clean. they all have a nice look to them. you need to post more ok! :D

wizard of koz - what's up? you shouldn't be so blue.....hehe i made a pun :p.... ok that was dumb but anyways that is a nice sp "imo" i like the way you painted it. you are scary looking :D

sigh i wish i had a scanner so i could post some of my sp's. latelty i have been working in my sketch book, so i have been doing them in it. which i must say is way more difficult than any other way that i have done them before. so when i get a scanner here at school i will post some sorry guys/gals :o

loads of really cool stuff recently, i'm always impressed by the pencil and watercolour ones. I really want to post some work but i'm out of bandwidth, anyone know if i have to go back and take all my images out of my posts? i'm not sure how the bandwidth thing works. removing each image from old posts would be a complete pain.... but if it would sove the problem...

Thanks again for the advise BH. I got an idea when you mentioned use hot and cool colors. This one I tried to make as cool as possible, my next will be hot. hopefully...

I admit I get carried away a lot on these. I just feel that self portraits are a really good way to just totally experiment. I am new to colors, so you are probably sure see a lot of mistakes and stuff. I appreciate you guys pointing them out to me...

http://img3.photobucket.com/albums/v13/jook13/AAAAcold.jpg

edit* I had to fix the nose, it was really bothering me. I thinbk I drew the nose at a different angle than the rest of the face, like my head got tired and dropped a bit towards the end...

I used a different technique than I'm used to, I think it turned out pretty well. Although, I think I lost some acuracy from the lineart.

JOOK: That's your best one yet, looks really good. (although you kind of look like a purple Jolly Green Giant ;) )

Here's another fairly quick one.
I almost scrapped this one right at the start, I'm glad I stayed with it, it's my favourite of these four or five quick ones I've done.
I tried to use tone a bit more here.
