Messy thumbs, hurrah!
Industry vs culture
stonemasons vs vampires
precarious cliff edge bungee jumpers vs..table.. strut..people
dark vs light vs aqueduct. I dont know why they would need an aqueduct when theres a waterfall right there.
Its hard to pick which one to go for out of these, vampires vs stonemasons is tempting, and but the aqueduct one makes an actual feature of the bridge!

ALH, cool thumbs already! I like the first one best. probably because it's the most refined so far, but I like the composition and idea behind it. lots of potential in that one.
hopefully posting a wip here this early will help me keep working on it and actually finish this bugger.

Not done an EOW for a while so this seemed like the right time to re-emerge! Here are a couple of thumbs to get me in the mood. I am partial to the first for the possibilities with depth, style of architecture, flying cities,(love 'em!) etc and the second for showing completely opposing cities in a snow environment, (also fun!).

I completely forgot about Sanctaphrax in the Edge chronicles and yet subconciously the first thing I thought of for this topic was a city on a floating rock. ;\
I'm definity going to enter this one (aka the only one I've actually entered).

I was a bit confused about the idea of a cultural bridge. You mean a physical bridge between two cities with different cultures, or could one portray one city with mixed architecture and cultures, with the "bridge" being a metaphor?
I'd still like to do something with a physical bridge, but I did want to clarify how conceptual this could be as well.

Hello, this is my entry to eow 114 (actually first time i get into eow). It represents the bad habit of human kind of forgetting wasted and polluted places behind like nothing happened and build new shinny ones.

Hehe, same stuff for me mate. There is a beginning for everything. First environment, first eow and first completed digital painting. I used to work in traditional media before, now i'm trying to get into this digital thing, but it's hard as I have a very crappy tablet and a very strange feel while working with it. Drawing without having the drawing tool in view is not something I'm used to :). Hell even the lines don't get as straight and smooth as i am used to, but well, it's a start.
Good luck to you too :)

the bridge is not metaphorical...or if it is it's a visually depicted metaphor... it is one of the visual elements of the piece. It's odd, although many of you seem to be floundering withthe concept of two cities and a bridge.. the thumb compositions are actually better than most compositionally.

Still kinda of new around here, I Felt inspired to try this out, I never draw environments, Only settings for characters.
I wanted to draw 2 cites, one a industrial/mechanical age city, the other a more organic like city, Maybe an elvish forest like place?
I also wanted to draw a tank, Cause i never draw those...Kinda drew it on another page, and threw it in via photoshop.
I dont know if i will finish this tomorrow, But it was still fun trying.

I had wanted to do this one, but I'm over at the Illustration Academy right now and I think I'll probably be too busy to create a "finished" version.
My idea was sort of an industrial alternate reality in which workers in an enormous power plant must "bicycle" their way across a long "track" from a mountain of shabby modern suburban-style dwellings to the monolithic entity. The irony being that even though there's an enormous industrial power plant city across the chasm, they're still actually using HPV's (Human Powered Vehicles).
Even if I finish this after the deadline, I might post it in this thread, just for the heck of it.

Deliberately left this to the last minute in order to force myself to learn how to paint faster. It took me all morning to get to this point, painting, making grids then deciding they looked rubbish, rotating it, then deleting then painting again, before finally flying into a GRR I HATE YOU IMAGE speedy paintover rage just as i was about to give up and go do some character work instead... which actually ended up improving everything.

Haha, I just started this about an hour ago. Haven't shown my mug on conceptart for a long time, so I'm gonna try and ease myself back into it. I've always been one of those artists who never draws backgrounds, which is something I'd like to change, so here I am. C:
This is where I'm at so far. #2 looks a bit silly, but I'm taking a pizza break and then have three hours of life drawing, so I'll come back to it later. I realize also that there is currently nary a city in sight, but no worries! I'll stick 'em in later once I've figured out the rest of the stuff.
Fun fact: this is actual size. :) Part of the reason I annoy myself when trying backgrounds is that I get too detail-oriented, so the size restriction should put a stop to that.

Wondering how to make this more bridge-like, kinda worried that while it is a ruined/'never completed' bridge..to most it may look just like ruins of an old church or something. Making it fatter would help, i guess i need to suggest the ruined/'construction site' sections more overtly and give the base a more solid foundation.

@ALH: most definitely make 'er thicker. It's giving me more an impression of a crumbling wall/scaffolding than bridge.
@zimfin: Nice one! I like the vertical bridge idea. The whole image gives me a youth fantasy genre feel, hehe.
Left life drawing an hour early, lol, here's what I did in the half-hour I was working on this again. Preliminary colours! They still need quite a bit of tweaking, imo, but it's getting there. Still need the cities, too of course, which will help with giving the bridge a bit of scale.. :)
EDIT: Added last process before flattening to add detail. I think I may have to make it a bigger resolution first though, haha.

This is as far as mine got, won't have time to finish it unfortunately.
Was planning on making a portal on both plateaus with a sort of light-bridge joining the two.
The idea was that these two cities are inhabited by the same people, one city decided to remain with their ancient and spiritual traditions, while the other decided to throw all of it's steam into technological development.
Unfortunately it may never be completed. =(

Nothing more than invert the original pencil and put some white, but I like it.
A bridge between a stone, dead, grey city and a light, glass, brilliant city.
I was more interested in the bridge at the begining, but the contrast between the cities gives me good reasons to investigate further.

Suddenly! a rough dash of chunkyness. I prefer the atmospherics of the first version, the skeletal architecture says 'abandoned, will collapse in a harsh breeze' ....but adding bulk was just what this needed to become all bridgey.
Those clouds are sweet m!ck, looks like some sort of epic creature battle is going on in there! :D

here's an update from me. Don't have time to fix all that I don't like about it.
ALH- Yours is looking alot better now that you blocked in the thickness of the bridge. Try to approach the sky so that it is separate from the ground- maybe make it less hard-edged? Just take a bit softer brush and lay it in so it doesn't draw our eye and seems to recede a bit more.

Good to see some really creative bridges here; I particularly like Zirngibism's idea.
So anyway, I finally got something I'm mildly happy with. I was originally going to have a rainbow as my bridge but I ended up deciding to work in pencil and greyscale and a rainbow ontop of that just didn't work so instead I've gone with a cloud which acts as a window into outerspace where there just happens to be a blackhole trying to consume everything. You can't make this stuff up.

Loving doing this EOW, this is the first environment i've EVER done where i feel in control over everything going on. Working on a canvas 3 times the size of what my old PC can handle helps a heck of a lot.
Sky next- the reason its so flat in the distance is because it was initially going to be part of a mountain rage, but that would be overkill in this now :).
edit- helps if its the right image

The irony being that even though there's an enormous industrial power plant city across the chasm, they're still actually using HPV's (Human Powered Vehicles). (These are like bicycles, only they, via a chain, transfer the rotating force to a wheel that digs into little notches on the tether and propel the bicyclist forward. Once they get to the other side, they simply detach their "bicycle", fold it up, and store it in a locker area until it's time to return home. One would think that the plant would be so easily able to supply power for an easier (and safer) form of public transportation! They don't just walk across because the area is so high that the work of returning to the ground and then making oneself up to their work area would be a lot more effort and take more time.

Some of your questions can probably be answered here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=54103).
As for whether you draw things on the computer and scan them in, it's all your choice. Most people choose to do it digitally because it's generally faster than if they draw it with traditional media, (and we only have a week), but some people make very lovely and stunning work with real paint.
Whatever you are most comfortable with!
