View Full Version : Teen Challenge 66: [[Primal God]]

TEEN CHALLENGE 66
Idea by K. Forthun, changed a bit by me.

The Rules:
Anyone ages 13-19 may submit an entry at any time before the deadline. Please host your image on a remote image-hosting site instead of uploading it to the CA server. This makes it much easier to transfer it to the poll thread.

The Topic: A God that is inspired by a certain animal, being or apparition that resembles an animal that holds certain traits. i.e Lion = Pride, courage, determination, strength. Owl = Wisdom, enlightenment, patience. Ofcourse physical 'hints' are a good way to bring your character. Like bits of wolf-fur (clothing?) or feathers.

IMPORTANT
1. Add a border around your image with your name and the topic, like they do with the other of the week challenges.
2. Please do not use attachment manager, but outside host your image.
3. Mark your final as final

The Deadline:
Wednesday June 17th, 2 weeks.

nah is cool :P

my god is going to be an extension of a character i recently designed... ancient god of hunting and ever watching: in a 'modern' context so is now a god of brutal justice after seeing everything, through the act of hunting :)

gonna be so cool... and the fluff relating to the animal is gna be sweet :) will post something less vague when i give a WIP/final...

for those whom it may concern...

Animal symbolism (http://onespiritx.tripod.com/magick18.htm)
just googled this in case someone needs some ideas. It's just a huge list of animal with some of their traits that you could incorporate into your piece ;)

: > This sounds like fun.

Mine I think will be a Hummingbird god, best known for her speed, and something about being a messenger.

EDIT: Decided to go directly to speed and ditch the messenger thing.

EDIT2: Progress Shot. : > ♥

Corza334: you might want to soften some of the lower part of the dress, too hard and contrasty as of now.

Ronald Liu: Nice speedie, can't wait to see more.

DKHutcheson: Cool stuff. Keep the awesome forehead beak, please! i think it strengthens the silhoette quite a bit.

working on mine at the moment.. gonna spam this thread with these last 2 months as a teen.

I am extremely tempted to enter this, it would be the first one I have entered as well! There have already been some really good ideas here :D The question is, will I have time to finish it with exams... I'll give it a go I think :P I have a few ideas circulating in my mind already.

EDIT: Well here is a quick and rather messy sketch of the pose I will be using in my final concept after many thumbnail sketches and poses. I apologise for the awful scanning quality, I am still working out how to get decent scans of sketches :P I wasn't going for accuracy of anatomy in this initail sketch, so ignore the vast amount of anatomy errors! I will be doing the whole piece in traditional media, due to lack of digital software and skills.

I am going for a bird theme, so a Goddess of birds, but I am going more along the lines of birds of paradise.
This is really fun, I will be entering more of these in the future :D can't believe I hadn't done this sooner!

Mtijn
June 8th, 2009, 04:41 PM
Hm, I have quite a lot of ideas, however I kind of failed with my fish one.
My other one is a Phoenix like being -> Reincarnation as the "theme" of it all.

I'm quite getting this one!

looking sweet guys...

this is THE MURDER!
a primal god of hunting and avenge-ment, animal is the 'crow'...

the crows are everywhere, they watch everything, in ancient time they where used as guides on hunts as they would watch weakened prey, easier to track for a ancient hunter, similar at a murder scene, if there is death, the crows are there... seen as an omen for one who deserved it... not terribly well thought out plan .. but ancient man was like that...

I've never done digital painting before, and this is just a rough sketch, got a lot of refining to do first. I'm going for a Sekhmet/Kali-like aggressive maternal thing with a hyena. Hyenas are matriarchal, and it's not uncommon for the females will fight to death only hours after they're born.

I need to reference some zebra skulls and flowers for the background. Anatomy crits are very welcome. Also not quite sure what she should be holding. Right now I just scribbled in some lines for later, I want the main hand to be holding something dangly, just not sure what. Also, I know the elbow is messed up. Need to go in and remove the strange side tumor.

jerik too right, but yeah first atempt at any true PS painting so trying to keep it easy,

and man ur looks good, specialy now i can tell he wasnt some huge ass birdman as big as a tower, good job mate ur shading is sweet,

and isha i think he was meaning the dull dirt wings and a few other shaby bits but its all good, oh and the backgrounds a fair bit rushed, but i am not one too talk seeing i got lazt once i got past the face on mine hahaaa, still looks sick imo, i shat myself wen i saw ur lines :D

Jerik
June 15th, 2009, 07:42 AM
nyehe, yup, 30 hours... irrunno how i managed it... i worked through all the series i had while doing it... (freakazoid, how i met your mother, clone high...)

sorry Isha, i couldn't quite place my finger on it at the time... not so much now...
i think a major factor is your lack of highlights. or at least higher shades, the lines, though being nice, are a bit too dominant in this coloured piece, either darkening the edges works (though not in a piece like this...) so make a new layer over that of the lineart and add shades of brighter colours, particularly to the edges... i'll add later if anything comes to mind...

Demons_Nightmare
June 15th, 2009, 07:54 AM
if any of the admins read this, i reckon we need a badge like the Chows and cows, so i reckon that next should not just include our main work ie primal god (themes), but also should place at the same time a thumbnail for the badge, like they had in the other threads, if u get my drift, Big painting, then ur prefered thumbnail for TC, yeah idk either :O

Isha, I love the description and the final piece. She does remind me a lot of a parrot, and a lot of an aztec goddess actually. The only thing I'd really crit on is her calf, it seems deflated.

Jerik, all those details! And your linework is fantastic. It looks great except, my eyes don't want to rest on your character at all. I'm distracted by your background. Compared to it, your character doesn't stand out at all, color or value wise.

Demons_Nightmare, love his watches. Yours does a great job of conveying all three of his purposes. And I love that monocle, gives him a lot of character.

I'm almost sick of mine. I wish I had thought more about the composition before I started. x D

My Final:
The Hummingbird Goddess

Her chief responsibility is to spread seeds and hurry the arrival of spring. She is enemy to anyone who disrupts the harmony of nature or ruins her flowers and plants.

DKHutcheson - awesome :D

isha - Really like that shiny on the feathers.

demons_nightmare - not a fan of the watches I find them out of place even if I do get the symbolism behind it. :/

jerik - whoah the lineart is friggin awesome. Even though the coloring job is not bad I still like your lines more. I find the building on our left to be distracting. Maybe you should crop it out? :S

---

http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/9828/deergod.jpg

Cervus is the primal god of life. Guardian of nature and protector of the living. He nurtures the creatures of the forest and is believed to bring prosperity and love to all those who follow his teachings. Although his true form is unclear to mortals some say he can take the form of a stag or a tree. Witnesses also recall a blinding halo around the stag or tree that blinded them before dissapearing completely.

According to ancient lore, Cervus has a twin brother, Heorot (not pictured). He is the deer god of deceit and suffering. He embodies all the sins of man and flourishes in the cruelty that human civilization exerces on his brother's creatures. It is said that the stag brothers share the same heart and are therefore bound to each other for eternity. They are often depicted strolling side by side in a forest.

About his design: I shrinked the waist length a bit but I still wanted an ellongated feel since I wanted him humanoid but not too human looking proportion wise. I like the fact that one of you got his sexuality confused because that's what I was going for. I wanted to convey a certain feminity found in the deer into the god while keeping a masculine top. And the sketchiness of it is due to my lack of motivation and experience with digital painting. :D

Just some quick comments:
DK- awesome concept, very original. I love all the textures you created and the colors are really brilliant.

Dforman- great concept :D, and great brush, but man imo u should keep going at it coz it still to me looks too much like ur rough WIP,

Corza- interested to see wat the final comes out as, still not very clear and light and colour is not very well defined, need to get the crow aspect across to me besides just wings, only reason i know its a crow god is coz it says it, but yeah refine it and i will likey :D

Omerta- man this is epic, showed my VA teacher and she was amazed out how u used ur brushes, colours epic and i am guessing its a rhino god :D its great man, love it, cant wait for the finished product,

Fawn- nice concept, finished product should be sweet, only crit is the arms wich u probs already fixed, too flopy specially the right arm, tricep is generally bigger at the top, and the deltoid (shoulder) is quite wimpy, draw over it amd just rough the bone structure in it to get an idea of muscles, sides that should be sick :D

HarryAllard- nice idea on the tiger, u need to define a light source, urs is apparently from behind yet the sword and body all have teh lightsource situated on the left, and the face is way too flat man (or is he a pug? joking,) also anatomy, right arm is too long in comparison to the left, the left arms humerus is too short or the right ones too long,.. also need to check up on muscle composition, if my pecs were that far down my chest i would be a granny and very square torso, but yeah had to get out my anatomy book for that, and to think i study that in bio, pdh and art... spend more time on it, play around,

Mtijn - looking good love the fishies atm, cant wait to see the finished piece,

Jerik- wat can i say urs is epicly good, no offence i almost called u jerk coz u killed me lol. sides that no crits sides the character being too small compared to the scene and wishin u hadnt cut off his left foot lol, but then again to get the message of the god across u need that side of the image, i like it alot man, and ur definately determined 30 hours ur my idol hahahaa , or are u :perv:

Demons_n- u have the gayest name ever made and u got too lazy at ur pic, next time concentrate on lightsource and finish it properly, ur pathetic i spit on u :ilaekae:

Dk- thnx heaps, love urs too, no anatomy crits, no colouring crits really, but as u said u got sick like me and rushed the background sort of, like mine ;) hahaa but we will get better

Isha- looks great, good to see u took the advice, coz brightness helps a parrot :D, only crit is the leg we can see but who cares coz i dont its happy :blahblah:

Transitory- i dont like my watches much either, not a fan of metal, and that was my first atempt at photoshop 7 played around b4 but not serious so got extremely annoyed after i had done the turtle part so rushed he rest abit (shouldnt have said that but who cares i know i dont,). looked at ur sketchbook, and thats very good saw one witha wip and frisbeee that was epic, crits on ur god, cheekbones inconsistent disappears on the left side of the face, hips are too square ie didnt have a smooth transition from waist, sides that and not knowing how long u spent all i can say is its good and gets ur idea across.... and not a fan of the flower in the hands, for a focal point needed more detail :D but ur anime style is awesome if u had done that more in this i would say ur a champion ;D

i think thats all sides ppl on page 1. but yeah hope i wasnt too harsh could have been a hell lot harsher, but then taht would be destructive not constructive, also wouldnt mind knowig how long most ppl took i took bout 10≤ hours over a week to do mine, sides that hope everyones good, and cant wait for next round, now i have some experience

._.'
well... this is a more modern version of him (read the previous page of posts...)
the murder is the god, a personification of crows, a god of hunting for ancient man as crows lead the way, as well as a god of retribution, feeding on the corpses of the deserving dead...

really sorry about the double post but for some retarded reason, i couldn't edit my last one :<

i only just realised that me and nightmare are really seeing eye to eye
i'm sad to say, but due to the gift of hindsight: hunchback is very likely to win here... though yes, if you think about it he isn't really totally to the theme of primal god

he has a pretty picture... thats about it... and this is seriously looking far too alike to the gladiator challenge, wherein the prettiest picture was the winner with no evidence of thought behind it, and therefore no concept.

it's really nicely done... but yeah... not great, though inevitability dictates that hunchback is really likely to win :/

(oh.. and just to say... i really believe in 'make the TC badge' plan)

Either way, the painting is gorgeous. And ultimately, however cool your concept is, the better rendered piece is going to look more professional and therefore be preferred by a client-- if any of us ever lands an awesome job as an actual artist. : )
Ultimately, winning this shouldn't matter that much. The point of these challenges is to improve your skills, get critique and show off a little. Besides, don't count your chickens before they hatch.

Due to finals I just didn't have the time to paint this. We're out now so I'll finish mine for practice and post it in a sketchbook thread.

Omerta -- I liked your rhino god better, I felt that it fit the theme more. Your goat is beautifully rendered, but seems more demonic than primal.

Isha's is probably my favorite, in terms of both being finished and fitting the theme. I do like Hunchback's though, and I feel that the atmosphere of the picture actually is very on topic. The catfish god was interesting, and I liked that the technique made it look somewhat staticy, but I felt it could be more polished.

this is true... i realise the point is to up our skills... 'winning' doesn't really have a point without badges too :P

And some people don't get the meaning of 'art' in 'concept art' I guess.
It's an important factor, and should be equally acknowledged to the concept part...

If it wasn't, a written description would suffice as a concept.

lol but its the prefix that determines wat form the art takes, writing is an art form so technically writing a description would suffice for the topic, its the broader range of the actual business and digital art medium that makes our drawing the viable and only acceptable submission form, everyones art work here is on topic to a point, its just if u look at past challenges ppl have won due to a pretty picture instead of getting the topic or 'concept' across, thats y me and jerik crited (creativly not demeaningly) hunchbacks submission, also because i was scared heheee, but yeah goes to show the better u are at ur art form the more ppl are gonna like it, therefore the more ppl r gonna vote for u

Hunchbacks is just an all round stronger piece.. it deserves the vote..
He got the metaphorical sense of a spider down.. it reminds me of a spider. I guess it just comes down to if you like his concept or not, and it might just be a coincidence that you and jerik both don't.. I dunno =}

Not worth arguing over though! Just enjoy the comp :P

I'm kinda disappointed in myself that I didn't get to finish it in time. I'll finish it no matter what, however I'm afraid I missed out this comp T.T
