ROUND #158 :: THE GREEN FAIRY
DESCRIPTION
"I'm the Green Fairy!"
This one has been requested a few times, so here you are. The personification of absinthe, often referred to as "The Green Fairy".
Illicit, mysterious, and often thought of as an aphrodisiac and narcotic (both of which probably aren't true), the Green Fairy was a symbol for artists around the turn of the century.
Let's see your own interpretations. Keep in mind you don't have to do this in any specific way - If you don't want to glamorize drinking, feel free to make her the villain in the piece. Think she's treated unfairly? Make her the hero.
Just keep in mind she is Absinthe Personified, so you will want to tie in elements into your drawing to make that clear.

Perhaps it might be good to try and get away from Mucha inspired images, as tempting as it is. Absinthe was very popular at certain times in history. Drawing inspiration from those periods could put a different spin on it.

The Absinthe Drinkers (http://www.absinthedrinkers.com/The_Movie/Home.html) is a movie currently in production that is slated for production in September according to the IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1255856/).
Something I found while doing some research on the subject.
I found it on this Blog (http://absintheman.blogspot.com/), in case it might be useful.

I'm loving the designs so far. That glass one reminds me of Dita von Teese a lot.
Ultra rough sketch of the idea I have... thinking the Green Fairy leaves the bohemian scene in disgrace, partially blind from all that absinthe abuse, with a sugar cube hat/veil, and a pair of dress ribbons designed like those serving spoons in place of wings (am I allowed to do that? >_>).

Hey Pixeltuner, thats looking dope and I say go as far as possible with the monochromatic green colors, and then wait till the very end to add some red somewhere, some reflected light or some accent and watch it explode like a firecracker,:mod: or a flame donkey...
Anyways here's my idea, I have a feeling we'll see a lot of very similar characters this round (and maybe some Matt Dixon if lucky), but I'm trying to get in early to call dibs haha

Does this character have to be a female fairy? I was going to work on the idea that absinthe inspires creativity and borderline madness. The personification of this in my mind would be Vincent van Gogh. Here is a quick WIP with that sort of theme in mind. If I could get the official word on the rules for this CHOW that would be cool. Thanks.

Hi, everyone, I want to play too!!
I thought of her as the usual femme fatale, atractive and decadent, with really long claws and a side more dark than usual. Or as a dancing drunk fairy, euphoric but still quite charismatic. Not sure what way to go, maybe something between?

Weirdly, I'd just been working on this a couple of days before this went up. I should start over to be in keeping with things, but still thought I'd post it. :)
It started as pastel pencil on brown paper. Then used the cross-hatch brush that comes with the Intuos 3 as the brush for smudge at about 30%.

Each of her arms has a special sort of jank going for them and I plan on fixing them at a later date. But if you'd like to point out other/similar things that need improving, please please DOIT.
Here's muh fairy, complete with a slightly inebriated "seduction leer" and jingly bag of sugar cubes for enticing the boyz. She may or may not use her comically over sized absinthe spoon to beat unsuspecting gentlemen into jelly when they come up to her place for "coffee". Oh, also, some anise in the arbitrary hair bun for convenience :D

Lunchtime... I'd like to keep this sketchy:
Edit01: Bit more when I should be doing something else.
Edit02: Just a TEST, to see the kind of thing I might go for. Flat colour layer on multiply and a texture also on multiply at about 60%, with a few white edges.
Edit02: Well, I've gone a bit Art Nouveau without meaning too! Lineart and thin wash. When the texture overlay goes on this darkens up, and ages better.
Edit03: Final version with some aging. Not meant to be Mucha inspired, but definitely some Art Nouveau elements.

Woo, throwing my hat in. I've only got the roughest of sketches so far. Needs some anatomy perspective work. Not sure if she's going to have wings.
I think she's like that crazy friend who has all those ideas that sound so great after you've had a few. And then you wonder why your left shoes are missing in the morning and your roommates won't speak to you.
A few comments:
Mara644 - A darker interpretation, but not too grim. I like the nouveau feel.
IceMoon - I like the rather melancholy feel so far. I look forward to progress.
AmbientSounds - Very elegant pose. I think the tipping a glass would fit well. Maybe give her face a bit more expression of some sort too.
Tydal - I think you have a good start, but her head really needs to be bigger. Maybe try looking for pictures of dancing people for ideas for the legs.
kisou - That is an amusing and apt idea. Her boob area looks a little weird, but I'm not sure what you should do about it.
curly - I'm interested the see your progress. The poster thing is pretty cool.
Sekino - I love your style. Pleasantly simple.
AvisNocturna - Very nice so far. I like the colors a lot. I think you should be careful with her right leg (the folded up one). It doesn't look like it joins up to the body right.
Amber Alexander - I like the dancer idea. I think her legs need elongated a bit. And maybe make the higher hand a little smaller.
agnostes - Has a good wild feeling, I'd just like some more definition.
Mercuralis - Deliciously green and swirly feeling. Perhaps she could have a sugar skull instead of just a plain sugar cube?
Katanasoul - Very nice sketch, very classical looking. Her left (my right) leg looks a little weird where it joins the body to me.
Nadiamoon - I like how this is developing. I think the color shift was a good idea.
JailHouseRock2 - definitely looks like a mean drunk. The pose and expression are pretty good. My only thought is to maybe move the feet a little wider apart. I think it might give a drunker/more unsteady look. I really want to seen it in color now.
darknight - I'm interested to see how this looks as you render more. Do you plan on adding in any more colors? I think it would bring a bit more depth to the picture.
darthmarsh - I'm amused by the just one eyeball so far. Looking good.
NoShot - Yay for flapper fairies. That looks pretty cool so far.
Lt_Action - I like the troublesome expression she has. It might just be me, but it seems like her legs are a little short compared to the rest of her.

holy crap, some fantastic design so far... too many to mention but you all know who you are~! (pretty much everyone!) so heres my late night doodle, i want to work on the top composition but add some of the colors of the 2nd palette into it to add to the hallucinogenic nature using the concept of vibrating boundaries (colors which buzz next to each other to the human eye) and add more of a reflection to the water... but you get the drift...
please critique if you have time, thanks all! and good luck!

There's only one green fairy for me. Tinkerbell. Had this glamour icon been a real person, I'm sure she would have made a spectacularly entertaining Hollywood lush in her latter years.

It's pretty fascinating watching the progress of these, never really paid much attention to people's works in progress before, just saw the finished things. You guys all seem to work very neatly... it makes me jealous, for me it's more a case of creating a giant mess and hope it'll clean up into something half decent at the end.

WIP update
I lengthened her legs, shrunk her left hand and did alot of work to her face. I haven't worked on her clothes yet, or hair/ears. The main critique I had about my last painting from "the endless" is that she looked lifeless so I'd like to know if I fixed that in this painting. I'm also not comfortable with how the wings are going, they are kinda looking like batwings which I don't want, I want her to be seductive and not scary.
thanks
rinjii
May 14th, 2009, 12:23 AM
ok, here's my take- i was thinking about having her hovering and pour the absinthe into a glass from her jug. for her wings, i'm thinking about either detailing them with the slots cut into an absinthe spoon, or keeping that like a dragonfly's wings and putting the detailing on her body.
any comments on her proportions though? i feel i may be off a little.

I don't have the .psd at the workplace, but I did a little paintover on the WIP image, I didn't like the colors, and the pose, so I ve changed them a little bit. Mara644: you were completely right about the pose, but I don't want her to lean on anything, or maybe she could lean on a dolphin? hehe.

Been feeling pretty crook the last few days so all I've done is this rough out of a composition that came to me last night. My idea is to have a Brian Froud style Good Faery/Bad Faery back to back. Migsta - Awesome! First thing I thought of is that it needs more moisture on the skin. Nice.
Garth Cochrane - Get it done! The Froud Faery looks really good as it is.
Missile - The arm/elbow is a bit unclear. The brachioradialus (front part of the forearm) goes "over" the biceps and I think if you hint at it with a little shadow, it will read more clearly. Sorry if that is not very clear, I messed with a pick to try to show what I mean. I tried cropping it to see what it looks like and I think it looks good how it is.

Some comments:
telamon: Good concept and funny too. The guy looks totally on his guard though and not all that pleased that she's so close. Maybe turn his head toward her and have more hint of a smile or eagerness. I think you could bring his jaw back some. Her arm needs some work - it doesn't seem to fit into the same space as the rest of her. I think her hip should be in a different place too - probably further back. The curve of her spine looks like it would be painful. I like the foreshortening of his arm, but the arm should be a little taller.
AmbientSounds: Nice pose and rendering - especially on the hand. I think a background would help you too - even an abstract one. Put some liquid spilling from the glass, right? I'm not sure about her expression. It's kind of neutral - what are we supposed to think when we look at her?
JailHouseRock2: I like it so far. She's icky. Scales are a nice touch, and I like how you've done the bottle.
Jefita: Great idea with the hair! Nice work on the glass, too - maybe lighten it up a little? I'm not sure.
MJ Alcazar: Similar pose and camera angle to your last one, but I like this one better so far. Maybe it's the expression on her face. Looking forward to updates.
Lt Action: Everything's so saturated that I don't know where to look. Do a values check, too. I like the linework, especially around her shoulder and arm that's holding the bag. I'd have her lower lip be smooth and not angled lines, but that's just me.
agendab: Nice start, and good volume with the pencil around her torso. I hope you keep that when you go to coloring. Might be neat to keep the pencil in the finished version.
Amber Alexander: My favorite part so far is the fabric drape/wings. Very cool. I think the figure drawing itself could be more fluid. That back leg is really rooted to the spot - maybe introduce a bend at the knee and have her up on the ball of her foot some. There's a good twist between pelvis and torso, but the area of the rib cage is a little flat. She's not skinny enough to see the individual ribs (which I like), but I think we should still see shading patterns resulting from the entire rib cage. Finally, look for chances to play straight edges off of curved ones. For example, you could have the forward thigh with the top surface a little more curved to show the flexed muscle at the top of her leg. In that case, the bottom of that leg would have a fairly straight line, like it does now. (Yes, I see it's got a small curve, but it's mostly straight.) Or, you could introduce more curve on the bottom part of the thigh to contrast with the straight edge on the top of the leg. Hope that's making sense.
hungryan: I'm still not quite sure what you're after in the drawing - I 'll try to post additional comments if you post an update. Is she treading water in absinthe? What's at the top of her head?
Chronoperates: Way cool and brilliant idea to have the spoons be her wings. Not sure what's going on with the green swirls in front of her thighs. Is she dissolving? Is the absinthe coming from her? I like the death's head under her elbow.
Migsta: Wet would be good, as would a blotchy, mottled appearance. Or a hint of it anyway.
curly: Good progress. Her left hand (our right) doesn't seem to know what to do with itself. Maybe have it further down, with the palm reaching away to her left?
darknight: I like the fairy. What's bothering me is how the spoon is bent, the bottle seems squished, and perspective is off. Maybe the perspective thing is on purpose, though. For tings like the spoon and getting a good circular bottle, try starting them off with paths and the pen tool in Photoshop (if that's what you're using). Then convert them to selections. Plenty of other ways to do it too.
Matt Dixon: Tinkerbell as a lush. Perfect. :)
AvisNocturna: That absinthe is coming from her dress, right? I like the pose and that the spoon is mostly edge on. I'm not sure about her expression, but I think that's personal taste.
Time to go home. :)
Chronoperates
May 14th, 2009, 05:24 PM
Ah, the swirly stuff in front of her leg there is the absinthe mixing with the pile of sugar shes sitting on. I tried to make it look kind of like sand does when you kick it up underwater while at the same time make it look like the way it clouds when the absinthe and the sugar mix.
blau
May 14th, 2009, 05:32 PM
Chronoperates: the line from butt to upper leg should be much more fluid, and I think her legs are too small, just compare her feet to her head.
AvisNocturna: So far I like yours the most. The only little thing that bothers me is the thing on her head, looks too vertical and in line with her neck.

So, for today, some thoughts on the post on this page :)
telamon: I really like your idea, nasty little fairy... Watch his arm, it looks kind of flat right now, and I think you could maybe show a little more of the fairy and a little less of him?
AmbientSounds: I like her pose, I'm not sure about your colours though. Maybe take a look at pictures with green light and study how they work?
JailHouseRock2: Wow, that fairy is scary! I totally love her... Very cool design
Jefita: I love her expression and the light mood in this one, I also like the idea of her hair connected to the absinth.
MJ_Alcazar: There's something about that drawing I really like. Can't tell what it is exactly, maybe her expression, the lines and the design of the vermouth leaves :D watch her ribcage, it looks a littlebroken on the right side of the picture...
Lt_Action: I like the design of her wings so far.
agenda-b: nice pose and expression!
Amber Alexander:I like the pose and your design of the wings. scottmcd already made some good suggestions on how you could improve this.
rinjii: you're right about the proportions, maybe you should look for a good reference?
ronpower: very cool pose and design.
nightblue: Loving your pose and composition, very dynamic!
hungryan: not much to say to this one so far, I'm excited on what you do with this.
davidmcleod: what can I say? I absolutely love it! the disco setting rocks!

garth cochrane: nice idea! I'm totally diggin the right fairy. Her expression absolutely rocks!
Missile: I like the design so far.
gunnarsson: well, I can't say much about it, but I'm exited on what you're going to do with your sketches :)
tydal: Already looking better, but her shoulders still look a little wide. Her hips also look a little too slim in comparison.
scottmcd: thanks for the crit! I'm not sure about the dress/absinthe thing, I'm gonna play with it a bit.. :)
blau: thank you very much! I see what I can do about the crown :D

rinjii: you're right about the proportions, maybe you should look for a good reference?
i think the image i had was conflicting b/c of the amount of clothing she was wearing, so i will admit i winged it a little with fleshing out something- although looking at it now, i think the head is too small for the body.
i'll see if i can find a similar pose to use [hopefully a nude!] and try again later on tonight.

Amber Alexander: Having a wife who is a belly dancer helps with that kind of thing. :)
Strangely, I'm taking my wife and daughter to a fairy festival this weekend near Washington DC. Should be good for reference, eh? :)
Here's current progress. Her arm proportions and chest area are still in major construction. What else to fix?

Really great stuff from everyone.
Pixeltuner: Your work is just great to look at. I really appreciate your style in that it is gestural in some places but tight and well rendered in others.
Arthemis IX: The bottle dress is very cool!
AvisNocturna: One of my new favorites. Is the left side of her chest a bit large in comparison to the right? I cant make up my mind.
davidmcleod: lol...nice. I am a fan.
Here's an updated WIP of my flapper fairy. I am messing around with some color schemes before I do more line work on the figure. Not sure if they will stay the same. I also need to come up with some sort of background I think. Just looking at the talent on this thread is very inspiring and helpful. This is such a great place to learn.

I'll see if I can cook something up this weekend, but I'm not so sure- the round limitations (and CHOW's limitations on the 3/4 rule) seem to keep shooting my ideas down. D:
We'll see... plus, seeing so many awesome entries this far is scary. :)

not quite sure where I want to go with her hair yet. I'm trying the route of wormwood but I'm not completely sold yet. Maybe if I get more in and see what it looks like I'll know if its what I'm going for. Any feedback is of course appreciated and I will try to give some myself if I get the chance. Already it seems that finishing this will be cutting it close givin my schedule for the next few days. Hopefully I get it done in time.

Getting a lot out of doing this this week. I do feel a bit boxed in by my choice of pose and style, all these ideas were pouring out tonight and I had to cut it off and stick with my "overly rendered mean looking cheerleader" theme lol. Great freaking contributions, wow!

dayum! some really amazing stuff this round, I'm really impressed (and intimidated T_T ).
Jessibean - just.. wow.
Jailhouserock2 - haha im loving your take on this one! awesome!
here's mine (i hope its not too big) she's a playful, drunk off her ass green ladybug fairy, dipping her toe into the absinthe. I insisted on the "shh" finger motion cuz last chow i tried it (Scheherazade) it looked like she was picking her nose... did I succeed this time around? ;) (ps: ignore the placeholder type... :P)

Petitemistress, I think puckering her lips out more (round) like she's saying shhh might help. Also lowering the finger/hand and making her eyes a little more 'cautious'.
Just some ideas...
I did a quick paint over...

amazing work so far, here's some crits :)
curly: I really like the dress and that you have her wings moving. Its hard to tell wheather or not shes on the ground or if she's hovering in the air. Between the two i'd like to see her hovering, maybe make her toes/feet pointed down to make that more obvious.
hungryan: I like where this is going so far, espectially the outfit, keep going!
KuGu: I like the perspective you have going and your drawing style. The part that bothers me is the sugar cube, it looks like its too big for it to stay in her hand at that angle, it looks like it would fall. I'd consider turning her hand around so the cube is in front of her hand.
Zarquino: I love how the glass looks but right now its overpowering, the glass has become the focus when you want the character to be. Maybe put in a differnet pose thats not so stiff.
conceptbloke: I like the variety but maybe also try something that's not so head on, like have her viewed leaning or sitting on the sides of the O (not sure if that's a bottle?)
petitemistress: I love the ladybug idea! Migsta already gave a great example for her face, another thing you can do for the future is to buy a small mirror. You can use your facial expression as a reference for getting the look right. You don't have to copy your face but it helps to give an idea of what shape the mouth makes and what other muscles are affected.
MONGOSMASH!: You did a great job at rendering her figure but i'm not quite sure what you're going for. Her pose is looking more pornlike then cheerleader.
Migsta: Its a little desturbing but looks so cool! I love the neon green. I don't have any suggestions, it looks done.
Max Martelli: the rendering looks amazing, that kiss looks perfect.
NoShot: I like your flapper idea, so far its looking great. Since she's so dressed up maybe put her in heels, something a flapper would wear.
rinjii: I like the pose but I think you should get her hands/face/feet drawn in before dealing with any shading. Spend as long as you need to get those accurate first. I know they are the hardest (they are for me too) but it will show once the work in complete.
scottmcd: i love that you added in the background, when i saw the first sketch i though oh no she looks like she's on the toilet but she really is! I think where you need most work is on her joints, look at reference for areas where she is bending (elbow, hips, knees).
Ostrander: very creepy i like it! I really like that you put in some hidden skulls into the swirling liquid, I'd bring that out a bit more, its almost too subtle. Unless those were happy accidents lol but i still like it.
Aurther 'Two Sheds': this is looking great, love the spoon. I'd add in some more contrast in her skin and highlights from other sources like orange from the spoon or some red from the background to make it pop.
JailHouseRock2: very cute! lol and origional, i like it. I think you should thicken her left leg to match the other one, it looks like its going to snap off.
Jessibean: awesome work, I added your website link to my list of favorite artists!
Amber Alexander
May 15th, 2009, 02:48 PM
AvisNocturna: love this one, hair, face and clothes looks amazing, can't wait to see it finished.
blau: the folds in her clothes look nice but her right shoulder has a strang indent in it that should be softened.
Tydal: I think you're making progress but I'd suggest to not even do any shading untill you have the sketch finished and accurate. Find a referece of a pose you like first rather then trying to make one up, use pictures of nude models when you can so you can see the structure of the body.
Garth Cochrane: I like this idea of two fairies, very cool and shows a range of your skill
Chronoperates: I love how you did the wings and the overall look but her butt needs some work, It shouldn't be that circular, what I mean is it shouldn't curve inward so much before attaching to her thigh
gunnarsson: I really like this idea especially the look of the skin on the bottom picture, top left face
Missile: very cute idea, I'd be careful of the bottom of her dress, they are looking like tenticles, if you want it to be flowing into liquid you'd have to spread them out so they don't look so think or if you want it to just be a flowy dress then find a reference for a dress in the wind.
davidmcleod: love it! lol
Nightblue: I really like what's going on with her head
Ronpower: I like the pose but i'm distracted by the hole between her thighs, to me if feels like she isn't skinny enough that she should have a gap there.
agenda-b: I hope we can see an update, its a nice sketch!
Lt. Action: you've got a very unique style, keep going with it. I really like that's she leaning on the spoon and I hope you keep in the wings, i like them.
MJ Alcazar: I like the look on her face and her feet are very well drawn. I'd like to see some more of her right arm, the pose she's in would be very uncomfortable.
Jefita: very cute!! love the belt buckle!
AmbientSounds: I agree that you should add more of a background. I like her hair and the metalic look that you gave to the highlights on her skin.
telamon: I like the concept, but i'd work on her hip, it looks too big.
may do some more later.

Arthemis- WOAH i love it! the bottle/dress is too cool, i love the way you did that :) personally i like that blank background, though.
Amber- gah, no kidding. totally didn't see your post until after i submitted mine- my bad. i do agree with you though- no idea why this is time i went backwards and did shading first, then detailing. the only thing bugging me is her right hand- that's the hardest thing right now to tweak. when i get back into photoshop i'll take my time to fix it up so that it doesn't look so half-assed :S

Amber Alexander: Your right, I just got too carried away as usual. :( I did actually use a reference, guess I just didn't do a very good job interpretting it...but i've come too far to go back now!!! (at least this time, but good to keep in mind for next time :D).

Honestly, it looks fantastic. I think your groundwork is solid, and once you start filling everything in, it will come together.
Also, I use Painter IX.5, and the pencil tools in that are absolutely amazing as well. I never have problems with my sketches/linework. :D It's more the process of generating textures and such that takes time, and sometimes it's better porting it to ps for that.

Amber Alexander, thanx a lot - I kinda didn't think much of this..:) So I've fixed the legs and I'll probably add more effect to wings later. Actually I didn't know what to do with the wings - so I just made these weird strokes that actually made a nice flying effect. Happy accident ;)

Slash Very nice water effect! And I like her wings! You should check her legs anatomy though and the glass perspective seems a bit off
wheezyit's interesting, considering your input into the background. But for now it lacks contrast, and some center of concentration, imo
Mercuralis I love her hair! And the bubbles are great^__^ I love her style - I could have go like this to the party! The upper wings are too dark. Are you going to add there something?
ianthegeekVery original :D No crits by now
Tydal You really should check her proportions, and for this state get yourself some girlfriend to shot for reference:)
kisou She's broken - she has several serious traumas and you should fix her indeed.Try to flip horizontaly her upper body - it will bring it a little to the truth, but you still should work hard on foreshortening and anatomy
JessiBean Awesome Linework! You've got a fan here
JailHouseRock2 cute :)
Arthur 'Two Sheds' Lovely!Where's the blood on the spoon? ^_-
Amber Alexander She reminds me of maskarades - more feathers there:) And her left boob needs fixing and her belly button run away to the left too far.Nice wings design and I like that you put that fabric on the floor
Ostrander It's awesome!
scottmcd Nice idea! You should add more color to her skintones - she's too pale now. Legs are anatomically off - check some reference or buid them carefully
NoShot Nice dress!I like this style:) I'll wait for the progress

i have played around with a sketch, and have come to this point now. I'm not sure how to make the composition work, i think i want a knocked out man with a bottle, but as it is now the composition looks bad to me. so im gonna play around a bit with that. and also with that fine fine lady, i thought the small sketch of 'er i did first looked cooler then it does now... something about it seems stiff and kinda no-good, the rendering and design of her face is something I dislike right now. Tips would be very appreciated!
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u256/pettergunnarsson/gunnarssonchow158wip3.jpg
and many good looking entries so far! jessy beans looks classy, ostranders got some great potential... ETC!
max martelli, yours look really good too, unconventional rendering there i'd say but i like it! looks like you looked alot at a ref, so i hope the stuff you are gonna have to design yourself match the rest in lifelikeness. but it looks like you definitely could do that, looking forward to seeing that!:)
mongosmash, looking forward to seeing your final one yea! weird combo of styles right now but ofcourse that says nothing about how the final thing will look. i like the look on her face there and how she looks just a tad druggy thin.

One last update I suppose. I ended up being busier this weekend than I thought. I also spent way too long agonizing over her skin tones. I'm still not happy with the colors. I'm undecided whether she should have small wings too.
a few c/c:
hungryan - I think she is looking really cool so far. I like the mix of nouveau with your style.
Artofinca - I like the style and color so far, but there isn't a lot that says "green fairy" to me yet.
MONGOSMASH!- Aww, I think clogs or bee wings would have been amusing. I hope you get to finish either way.
curly - The not smeared glass looks better. Those sort of glasses tend to have fairly clear glass anyways.
KuGu - Looks pretty good so far. I like the techno feel.

Liv: The leg which turns under her butt is a little too twisted I think. I mean how could she hold it like that? Most of the colors are nice and subtle except the green of course. I think that decoration and the light coming from bottom in this form isn't adding anything to the picture, much more taking something away from it.
flashrabbit: I wonder how it will look when you finish it. I don't think showing bones is necessary to make it look frightening, the color of her skin might be enough. But it's just my 2 cents. Nicely painted otherwise. The butt and leg region micht be a little bit off.
Jefita: Cute little fairy. I like the colors, although they might be a little bit too faint and whiteish (maybe that's what is bugging you about them). you could add a little bit different hue greens to the green areas, might help.
Artofinca: I like how it looks now, I hope you will keep it looking fresh. where did you get the refernece from? :)
MONGOSMASH!: Hope you can finish it, I dont' see any problems with it, its cool.
KuGu: Looks promising, finish it.
artina: Some warm colors might look good on it, otherwise it's okay.
AvisNocturna: I like it, she is a bit fatty, but that makes her more realistic. Nice colors.
gunnarson: really nice painting technique, I even like the double ears/nose/eyes, will you keep them?
Noshot: I like the style of the clothing and hair, but the yellow shoes doesn't work for me, and the background seems to be in a different style than the rest. Hopefully will look more kept in the same style when you finish it up.
Angel Intheuk: The face seems a bit like a dwarf from Snowhite for me, but some details like the hand holding the vase or something is really really nice.
curly: I like it. The mouth is a bit weird, like Joker's mouth and maybe a bit too big.
scottmcd: For me the tummy is a bit too thin, the hand that is visible is a bit drawn strangely. Also the hips are like rubber being bent. The background looks like it was made with a 3D application, it's really different style than the rest, also the style of the wings look quite different. The lack of shadows also makes the figure and glass jump off the the picture.
Slash: nice.
wheezy: Your fair's position on the picture seems a bit random to me. Why is her finger just touching the bottom, and his toes cut off? Add a bit to the right and bottom please. :)
Chronoperates: Tasty and scary looking fairy at the same time. Her left arm might have strange thing going on anatomically the forms are a bit weird on it.
Mercuralis: looks nice.
ianthegeek: looks funny, although I don't really get the hairy guy. There are some stuff drawn weird on it, but if you finish it it might look alright.
Tydal: the tummy is very long and has strange shapes, the right shoulder doesn't seem to be understood anatomically. The head is too small. You could try to start all over again a couple of times if you feel stuck.
kisou: the pose seems to be very strange allright, but the problem is that you don't seem to have the ability to handle strange poses. Do you feel anybody could do this pose? for example his knee seems to be disjointed etc. I suggest you try some easier poses first, and then build up your knowledge gradually.
IceMoon: cute.
Arthemis IX: nice idea. the leg is a bit flat.
rinjii: her legs are too short I think and she looks a bit fat, but maybe you wanted to do it like that.
Lotta: Now this is really cool! So cute, you have my vote for this.
Zarquino: pretty frightening. One of the arms look like an earthworm.
conceptbloke: I like the lower left pose the best.
petitemistress: she is cute. The straight arm might be too long and the knee on the forward leg a bit too high.
Migsta: ugly and frightening, so just right I presume. :)
Max Martellu: Almost look like a photo, really nicely done. Did you ever try drawing without reference? No offence, just for practice's sake.
Ostrander: like it.
Amber Alexander: The belly and the upper body seem to be twisted without showing on the skin the twisting. I hope it's understandable what I mean. interesting color shoice and nice idea about the reflection.
Arthur 'Two Sheds': her leg seems a bit too long or seomthing is not right with it. I like the spoon's color. Interesting concept somehow.
JailhouseRock2: she is so cute! no, wait she is frightening. Looks nice. Maybe the background's value is too close to the skin's value.
Jessibean: I think you might be talented. :) Please finish it, I would like to see it with colors and such.
blau: the rendering style is really rigid, like it's made by a computer or something. I think it might be a good idea to llosen it up just a little bit. what will happen to her hair?
Missile: looks surrealistic to me somehow. why is the handbag's handle so horizontal? interesting picture.
Garth Cochrane: it would be good to see it finished.
davidmcleod: hehe, this is funny.
Nightblue: the tit is flat.
Ronpower: it looks to me she is holding a computer screen or something. Why?
agenda-b: she looks cute.
Lt Action: the coloring looks a bit rgid to me, also how did you select the colors: everything is very saturated in my opinion.
MJ Alcazar: really cute, nice linework, finish it up!
AmbientSounds: not much to say, finish it.
telamon: lots of stuff seems to be off, but I like the stealing idea. check the guy's arm, you should show that it's in perspective with overlapping forms, otherwise it just looks distorted and short.
darknight: that bottle is not drawn correctly in perspective, and it seems you've spent a lot of time on the fairy's head while the rest of the picture is a blurry thing. It's a good idea to develop the whole picture at the same time. why did you choose such weird colors?
blackcherry: cute little sketches.
cup of Tea?: she looks like a model on a runway. interesting costume on her. The tits are a bit too modellike for my taste. :)
Matt Dixon: I don't think you need my comments. :) But the blue version might be a bit more interesting for me.
Hexxon: seems a bit messy to say anything about it yet
Pixeltuner: looks nice, will you finish it up?
Mara644: very strict style, but I somehow like it.
Sekino: Just perfect! And plus points for it being in watercolor. You've got 2 votes from me. :)
southilbily: beautiful :)
darthmarsh: when will you finish it?
FridayEve: Really loose, nice style, she looks like a waitress for me. You must be a professional also.
Katanasoul: it looks like an anatomy sketch (a qute good one), I don't really see it as a concept yet.
IIKII: not much to say, because it's not finished.
PsycheDragon: the drawing seems okay, finish it.
Nichols: nice idea
Rustveld: Also nice idea, but it's just a sketch, can tell how it will look finished.
Nadiamoon: strange
agnostes: not much to say
curly: I like the one made for the flyer.
Poshspice: looks good enough. Ehm. :)
Lakeland: nice movemetn, the leg seem to be small or off or something. somewhere at the ankle.
Dan Valkar: really ugly :)
bangalore monkey: finish it please
mechasiva, I like the faces.
dose: sketches
Inkfish: seems nice
clochette: I like it as usual.
Noshot: hope to see it finished
fersteger: nice colors and lights
Tommoy: really like your brush (I use the same sometimes). this could be a funny picture.
Dirkvandulmen: I like the middle bottom one.
Krizalide: nice face
Gothique: the idea is interesting, the things are painted a little bit too sketchy yet
Phew, this was really hard. I don't think I will try this again :)

I need to figure out what I want to do with the hair. The wormwood wasn't doing it for me so I'm trying just straight up green hair but now I don't know what style I want. I figured this looked pixie-ish so its a starting point.
Hungryan: none taken. I do draw as much as I can without reference but more recently I've been using it more than ever. I think its mostly a learning thing given that up until recently I barely ever used reference. For this piece, the heaviest reference has been used for the faces (minus van gogh's beard) and the girls hand.

Well as I starting painting more and more with my first design, I liked it less and less. Taking advice I had received from here and from others I made some major changes.

Lakeland: I like that you put her inside the bottle, when I was searching for reference photos I almost went with that same one lol but i couldn't make it work, so I'm glad you did! One small thing though Absinthe has an E at the end so you should add that on your bottle label :) nice work!!
Thanks Mate ! :)
totally missed that :P

Pfew Hungryan, those comments must have taken ages. I like the style you used on yours. However there are some anatomic issues, her left breast looks a little squeezed.

Ok, last update before posting in final thread. I was just goofing around and did a Miami Vice inspired color palette. Oddly enough, I think this may be my favorite set of colors, so I'm gonna roll with it.
Liv: Your fairy may be my new favorite (I have had a lot of different favorites this round :teeth:). It reminds me of Aeon Flux.

Hi Lakeland,
My thinking is that this is a guy, drinking Absinthe and The Green Fairy (his feminine side) is emerging. Call it as you see it - if its rejected I will understand of course. :)
I didn't read PoshSpices comment early on about sticking to females specifically so - my apologies.
Having said that...
Poshspice - wow - beautiful.
Friday Eve - nice technique - stands out from the crowd.
JessiBean - Can't wait to see the final piece. Amazing sketch.
Max Martelli - impressive rendering and I like your idea.
Cheers everyone! :)

Inspired by this week's CHOW and finding myself in my neighborhood pub, I opted to be served my first Absinthe....bohemian style. I must admit that the ritual is far more appealing than the drink itself, which tastes lie Anis, or Sambuca...at any rate, I have yet to feel its effects....either way, Im certain I will try it again some time soon.
now for some crits.....if I sound rude, blameit on the green fairy! @_@
@ MONGOSMASH:I feel that it looks very much like the reference pic you're using...but beyond that, it needs more character..but it's a very solid piece of rendering! :oneye:
@ Artofinca: Very nice pose..the coloring is looking stylized and unique, but besides it being a chick sitting on an absinthe spoon, Im not getting much else....the background looks good tho :)
@ hungryan: First off...thanks for taking the time...you rock sir/madam! And I want to tell you how much I appreciate the cultural influence that shows through in your work...very refreshing!
@ Jefita: Thanks! :D I think adding wings to your fairy would stengthen the composition, but it's a personal preference.... :P
@ flashrabbit: Hehee...looking nice...the rendering is quite crisp...tho the hand may be a bit chunky as of the last update..creepy! :)
@ Liv: Wow...big jump from the last post...very nice textures and lighting. Im not really in a position to say this, but what the hell...welcome! :D
@ Lakeland: I think you may waint to take another lo9ok at them feet..something is not quite right there...sorry I cant be of more help, but I do mean to be constructive...
@ Max Martelli: I think I actually liked the wormwood hair better for her. I envy your rendering tho...it's spot on.
@ wheezy: I like youre fairy, but see if you can thin her fingers out a bit, they seem abit sausagy... :P
@ davidmcleod: Hilarious!!! its what I felt like tonite when I drank the stuff....ahahahhahaha...you have one vote as well, sir! :P
@ Johann de Venecia: Holy frak!!!!!! that is hella-amano yoshitaka-cool! wow...just wow.
@ Tommoy: Great scene...tho there is something I feel is missing chromatically...some contrast of some sort..I would love ti see it pop more! :)
@ NoShot: I agree about the colors....but I feel the light source is unidentifiable. sorry I cant be of more help.
Ok Im off to sleep....Ill keep you all posted on whether or not the Greenfairy visists me cest soir... :P
Peace!

Yay! not counting sketches and studies, this is the first pic I do in almost two years!!! :mod:
Not sure about the wings though, wasn't planning on any wings at all until I made the glass on her hand.

Thanks, yeah, I had no idea of how to do it and ended doing it the worst way :/
I think I already have a better idea for the technique on the next one

Buuhh, I forgot all about this. Dx Here's what I've done tonight, and I'll have to just haul ass in the morning before the deadline.
Holy crap, you guys, there is some INTENSE art in this thread.
gunnarsson: Yours creeps the hell out of me, but in a good way. Those arm veins are ridiculously awesome.

Firstly, Thank you.
I really liked the idea of it but it just wasn't coming together in my eyes. I wish I had more time to work on it and tweek it until I liked it but due to time constraints I may have to settle for normal hair. Oh well.
Here's some more work on the body. I gotta work my butt off tomorrow if I'm gonna finish this. Sorry for not getting a chance to critique anyone. There are some really great things happening in this CHOW and I've enjoyed seeing them progress. Thank you for your kind words to all who gave them and good luck to everyone.

I'm a guy. :) I somehow never drawn nice looking women, only old people in the university, it's definitely something I could improve on. I think I will work on the tits on the picture of Fairy to make it more natural, not like 2 squeezed balls or something. Also the tummy looks a like something I could improve on.
And it's fun to spot the problems on other people's pictures and help them improve, although there might have been a little too many entries now, and commenting on all of them was a bit too time-consuming.

Here's my version of the Green Fairy.
I have 1.5 hours to make any small changes, so if you see anything that urgently needs to be fixed (like an error that will definitely cost me votes), let me know. I paint too slowly to make any major changes this late in the game, so keep that in mind.
I love almost everybody's so far! I'll comment on all of them in Final Burning <3
