This is a free site and open community. However, all mods and admins have ability to ban. It happens for many reasons but there is one thing in common with all who have been banned to date...they earned it.
After seeing a flood of new folks this year, we need to make a few things clear again.
Things not to do:
act abusively
spam posts
too much promotion and no contribution
giving mods or admins headaches, thus wasting their valuable time, during or after they make polite requests. polite discussion is always fine. insults and bad behavior earn the ban hammer.
causing mods to have to repeatedly remove garbage posts, rants, or stupidity, because the user does not think before they pushed submit.
piracy support or posting pirated materials
legal matters
and any other legit reason the admins or mods may come across

I'm guessing "legal matters" is a catch all for things that might open CA itself to legal action. I can't immediately think of any that don't fall under the piracy heading, but I'm sure there are many.

As J Wilson said, it's not so much a discussion over "legal matters" but matters that may find CA in a bad position or liable.
I had banned a user condoning shoplifting and stealing of art supplies. I don't know if you call "stealing physical art supplies" piracy in the sense that people usually associate it with software.

I thought it looked like this would boil down to two categories: 1. don't be immature, and 2. don't take undue advantage, but then I realized those two boil down to 1. don't be a jerk.

I also think this should be a sticky, because
piracy support or posting pirated materials
Yarrrr me hearties and me Somalia... :pirate:
I suppose this refers to filesharing and the use of cracks/keygens. It's not that obvious and an easy mistake to make, especially because different countries have different positions on the issue.
I do not support piracy here, just saying...

Reminds me, after my company finishes the move...I'll be definitely working on the sandbox version of the forums to see what fixes I can put in to kill more spambots.
I also want to see if it's ok to make a "sketchbook" icon that would sit in a user's postbit like how the AIM and other icons sit in them currently.
I also wanted to follow some other suggestions on improving the "Thanks" mod as a tracker.
...but I'm derailing here -_-;;; I am more fascinated with fixing up VBs to make them more efficient and workable for CA than anything else. I try to stay out of the other stuff as much as possible but, mostly I smite spambots on a daily basis.

Actually, its a good question. Some art related to Loli/Hentai/porn fetishes could create legal concerns. If it does then where do we as a community draw the line and say "you can't post art of *this*"?

That would fall under "legal reasons" and not under "art", in that case, and would come down to the decision of the admin/mod in question.

It seems to me that "legal reasons" explains why their art isn't acceptable and may be an offence worthy of a ban, but in the end the person is still getting banned because of their art; more specifically the subject matter of their art.
So ArtZealot's "don't be rediculous" is not exactly spot on.

How do you get banned for "too much promotion and not enough contribution"?
Better yet, can you explain what you mean by "too much promotion and not enough contribution"? and why it would seem negative on a free site?

We've had a bunch of cases where people come on this site and post stuff where it is *this close* to spam. First few times we let it slide, but if someone ONLY posts stuff to pimp their site/project/etc, refuses to take crits on it, puts it in the wrong places, and doesn't even post art with it, then finally we decide it's more like spam and less like awesome and ban them.
Posting awesome art in the FF section will never do this to you, though. :P
Don't totally understand the 'why would it seem negative on a free site' question. Because it's basically really annoying-self advertising? Why it would make a difference between a free site and a pay site I'm not sure.

my take is that, since its internationally known that Loli/Hentai/porn is not desirable, lets just don't post pieces tat fall straight into the mentioned category..

This morning I banned two ca members for inflammatory comments, non-constructive and destructive posting, and for breaking the rules in this thread. CA is in a no tolerance period where there will be no flaming or hate allowed. If we see it, we will ban. Permanently.
There are other sites like 4chan or deviantart where users can behave like that. This is not one of them. The mods and admin have full banning abiliity. I have been too tolerant as of late and the period of leniency toward those who break the rules of this forum is at an end.

I agree that at this site being banned is deserved. I came from another very large artist forum and there it's politics all the way.

What is the policy with regard to such things as portraits of celebrities, which are very often drawn using reference photos found on the web, but which are not necessarily in the public domain?

People understand that you have to look at reference to draw certain people like historical figures and celebrities. If the source is really recognizable, you should give credit.

I've been getting these recently but want to state - starting up alternate accounts because you're afraid of what you'll say on your regular account (ie disagreements political debates etc) not acceptable.
I've recently banned several members for starting up alternate accounts to do so. If you have something you want to say please say it to that member. You have the option of disagreeing in private too. If you're going to try to evade action by creating another account, you're just asking for a more permanent ban on all accounts affiliated with the alternate one.
I'm not referring to name changes. I'm referring to create account "X" because you want to argue with another user.
It's a resource waste too. With the growing number of members in the community keep in mind people may want to use a username that you're using just to start fights.

To answer your question, for the most part no. Unless you're doing it to spite the artist or drag up drama, if you post a link (without claiming the art as your own of course) you won't get banned.
If the artist doesn't want it posted he can PM one of the admins or mods to just have the link removed.

I'm asking this because i don't want to get banned :D
hope i'll get some answer
If you are an artist, and post a link to your art-blog, DA page or sketchbook, or something else relevant, that should be totally fine in most cases.
If your links are to a company website completely unrelated to art, and the only reason you made your account is to spread those links, that is spam and is typically a ban-worthy offense.

Something about MIA's comments made me think "oh look, another spammer" even in the ones without sig links. I found it pretty funny that a spammer would basically ask if spamming was against the rules. It's like they've just been sitting around this whole time wondering why they keep getting banned, and it just finally occurred to them.
