P.O.W.! Challenge 23
Deadline: Sunday, May 10, 2009, 11:59 pm anywhere in the world.

Topic: Warriors Never Cry...

This one is a bit more specific, but I think it leaves enough wiggle room to go in a lot of direction. Those of you who like battle armor and Frazetta-type characters, have a ball. Those of you who don't, show 'em how it's really done. :P You can interpret the art any way you wish, and the more creatively, the better. Any media. B&W or Color.

You can present your solution as a minimum of TWO to a tentative maximum of SIX pages which adhere to standard comic specs as below...and, yes, you can have the first or last (or both) as a splash page if you want. You can go to additional pages without asking if you have a decent idea that requires it--just don't get too extreme on page counts

Standard Comic Book Size:

--Trim size: 6 5/8" x 10 1/4"
--Live art area: 6" x 9"
--Bleed size before trimming: 6 7/8" x 10 1/2" (1/8" in all directions)

This thread will be the place you ask questions on this challenge, trash talk, post WIPs and post your final art. See the READ THIS FIRST thread for all specs.

Good luck.

This one is three weeks rather than the usual two weeks to see if it will allow more participation or just cause a lot more procrastination. I'll decide afterwards.

P.O.W.! Challenge 24 will be posted before Sunday Midnight, May 10, 2009.

************************************************** ***

A little note here for all of you who have supported the P.O.W.! Challenges...thankyewthankyewthankyew...

Just a reminder--those of you who didn't get a chance to finish exactly the way you wanted to, or ran into deadline problems, remember there is a sticky section where you can post your stuff when you do get it up to speed.

I have about 80 hours of nothing to do. I've already done the sketches. My advice to everyone else who can.... do the sketches, no matter what. It helps get your speed up for later stuff.

When you spend 6-13 hours a week in the dojo, you had better learn that the warrior never cries!

Inking is coming along. Looks like it's gonna be tri-chromatic since I don't have any painting skills yet. (Black, Dark gray, and light gray)

I'll replace the sketches as they're completed.

BTW! If anyone's wondering what a dojo looks like or wants to see stances/work check out: www.bushinkanwilliamsburg.com

One or 2 of the guys might look familiar.

Hey homies, I've never entered any of CA's weekly challenges, but I'm thinking I'm gonna make this my first. It's finals week, but I think I'll be able to make some time. :)

BTW, mine is probably gonna be 6 pages. Just wanna make sure that this challenge is definitely making an exception to the 4 page limit in the Read First thread.

Inking is the bane of my existence. I think I need to sketch even more loose so that it's not so damn tedious. 2 pages of 5 are "colored" and inked.

I have a strong feeling that I'm gonna get beat like a naughty little circus monkey, knowing who else does these and seeing the other post so far. (=D)

Hi J.S. Basically some of us have been very busy over in the team CHOW that just got done and really had no time to check in here. Ilaekae will be back soon, so look busy!:ilaekae:

Your action seems packed in kind of densly. Will you have many words to insert? I guess you will have room enough as long as nobody has a lengthy soliloquy.

Some mild trash talk at third parties: A lot of people who talked before are now hiding because they have realized this is hard and they are hoping nobody remembers they said they would do this. You're working hard and that is probably further intimidating them.

We are all having fun in here. It is a welcome sight to see all you newcomers. I am pretty sure Ilaekae will not have a problem with six pages, theoryC. Keep working hard and don't wait until the last day or something will kick your butt (whether it be inking or lettering or coloring).

Thank you, Arttorney, as always...

Everything looks like it's coming together nicely. My apologies for lack of response for the last few days. Like Arttorney, I was sucked into that fiasco Daes' staged in CHOW to humiliate all of us :P...

I'm hoping to have mine in this one, too, if I can pull it off in time.

For those of you who have questions on pages--I have a minimum and a suggested maximum to prevent people from biting off more than they can handle. If you have the confidence to move further, do it. I'd say that ten pages is probably the absolute maximum that we'd accept, and even then, I've made exceptions.

Also keep in mind that you don't have to complete the entire comic start to finish. You can submit 2 to 6 pages of a much more complex idea that requires more pages to finish, as long as we can get a feel for where you came from and where you're going. I've had to hold a few of mine back because I have a tendency to end on a sight gag, which only makes sense if the entire comic is up in some form.

If you're short on time, you could show pencils on a few beginning pages finish three or four in sequence, then finish with a few more pencils to finish your idea. We don't have to have a complete finished comic to go to poll, just something that makes sense to the reader and has at least TWO finished pages for final style.

DeuceRok
May 6th, 2009, 05:00 AM
Of course it doesn't HAVE to be finished!! It's more likely to WIN though if it's done though. While winning isn't everything. The process of completing is important!

BTW my next one (after this) is going to me massively cartoony, so I don't have to spend so long inking! Yes, I know I constantly complain about this, but it's because i have yet to find a quick method that matches my style.

Page 4 of mine underwent significant changes while I was working on it. The previous pics weren't interesting enough to me. I think you'll agree that it's significantly better.

Overall, the process got a lot faster tonight. Even though I took lots of breaks. I got 1.75 pages done and ready to go.

My current goals:
Thurs-Page 4/5
Fri - Text/Post
Sat (day)- Critiques??
Sat Night - Post

I'd like to give regular detailed crits in here, but haven't had the time since I'm working on a beast of a GN with a tight deadline. I will say this, though. Make sure it's clear what's going in each panel, and in what order to read the panels, and who's talking. Also, the strength of the drawing is really important, so just like in any other type of illustration, you're often going to need reference to do it right. Proportion, anatomy, and perspective need to be correct, or at least convincing and consistent. Sabastian, your panel borders are getting lost, make sure they're clean in the end.

I applaud anyone who takes this up; it's a lot of work.

DeuceRok
May 8th, 2009, 05:09 AM
Hey Mickey (or anyone else who also finds this relevent) P.O.W. is hard because it's such a lengthy process. It's not just throwing a character down with its own nuances, but it's about creating a story, characters, organizing that story, and doing all the general art stuff on top of that. It's cool if you don't have time for it all. I think those who do get a chance to finish still appreciate the critiques. (I know I do.)

arttorney
May 8th, 2009, 11:41 PM
Mickey walks the walk, so it's sad if he is too busy to talk the talk.

As for me, I've been drinking, I'm on the internet, and I'm not afraid to burn your eyes out with my entry tomorrow. (Let men fear!)

Seriously, I'm trying kind of a new direction with this one, and anyone who has seen some of my prior stuff knows how scary that is.

I am totally proud and totally disgusted by this comic. It's my 1st shot, so I'm stoked to have completed it. I'm disgusted by parts of it:
1. All the perspective errors
2. Lack of deep coloring
3. Weak anatomy in parts
4. Weak fold/fabric design

Overall, I guess I'm happy with my product. I hope Most agree.

J.S.: Solid work man. The script leaves a little to be desired, but there are a few panels here that I'd like to point out as sheer brilliance.

1. The top of page 1! Awesome start!! The characters feel gritty and the juxtaposition of color for the beasts/ogres/outcast orcs in the cold outside with the warm colors used on the inside are excellent! The perspective on the latter half of the page needs work in that it needs a more aggressive/dynamic styling. It reminds me of an example in 'How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way.'

2. The bottom of page 2 is fantastic. Great composition! The upper left is a great drawing, but I might have liked to see a stronger demonstration of uncertainty of fear. Also, you had a lot of great ideas, but they're really compacted.

3. The upper right and bottom left are great panels. The figures communicate well. The confident stride in the upper right, along with the uncertain, but strong entry in the bottom left. The faces leave a lot to be desired here. I might even recommend their omission in the upper left hand corner. His calling upon entry is pretty suitable to pique his interest. This would leave more room for his reaction shot to be fleshed out.

4. I like this panel because shows the warm home turning into a fiery hate. The dead woman in the upper left steals this page for me. It's well worked out. I would have recommended centering this and using the whole horizontal length of the top to really draw this out as a pause. This would help the reader by emphasizing the loss. A longer panel = longer time for the reader's eye to transgress the page.

5. The final is the final page... I would have liked to see either of the following: More of him burning his past//Arriving at the camp of the Ogres. It would have left me with a stronger sense of closure or an anticipation to see what this character would do to the beasts!

Overall: Your panels flow consistently. Except the last. What I mean by this is watch the progression that your eyes take as they're taking in the story... it's always a Z path. Your lighting in at times is really inspired. Great Work!

J.S. it took me FOREVER to get this thing done. I had to take 2 weeks and like 25 hours to do mine. Yeah... I know... it's sad, but my photoshop skills are SLOW! Don't sweat spending extra time on it. some of us work faster than others.

I definitely won't be able to give the next one THAT much attention. I'd probably be a bit faster if I worked in value, rather than line. I've always been more of a "draw-er" than a painter, so an unbounded shape is hard.

arttorney

What Ilaekae is saying is that he was so busy participating in a contest in another subforum that he neglected to put up the poll for POW 22 and now he intends to correct that little detail while he is making the poll for this the 23rd POW. Do not attempt to adjust the dials of your computer screen. Ilaekae is now in control. (and yes it was kind of humiliating over there in CHOW, but at least I'm used to it.) If you want to be humiliated, there is a big contest in IDW right now that promises to be intense. Gaius and Hideyoshi will draw circles around everybody in the Dracula's Castle EOW. Pick your poison.

People go ape over the detailed style. J.S. Don't stop pushing hard just because you've gone farther than the others. Go even farther. Do two or three pages rendered out superbly and next thing you know you'll be too busy with freelance work to hang out with us anymore. I think you could profit by doing a drawing or two for the "Official Draw from What Does Everybody Look Like Thread" stickied in the lounge. Slash has that kind of viking hairdo thing going on and so he would have made a great head study for you in preparation for working on your main character.

I'm an asshole and I don't think Ilaekae thanked me. I have to go back and check to see if I'm offended. (Edit: Yeah. No thanks for me.)

Oh. Don't burn your fingertips, J.S. You'll need those to sign checks with.
