I've not seen that trailer yet, but I heard about this movie a while ago and it sounded really cool. Any retro-styled movie with robots sounds great to me! Here is where I heard about it http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hp&cf=prev&id=1808466197&intl=us Yahoo movies does a pretty good job at bringing info on movies quickly and having good links.

Chad thank for the tip, haven't been to LOTR yet (I always go the 1st of jan.), this is one interesting trailer..
It can become the sleeper hit of 2004 or a stinker of biblical proportions....
a bit like Pirates this year...

I don't get it....is it a animated film or a normal film? if it's animated, then it rocks....but if it's a normal film...well, then it looked animated with actors being cut in... or is it "who framed roger rabbit " , mixed ?

It had better not suck, that would make me angry, and you wouldn't like me when I'm angry...

That's what the director wanted to achieve a "20's serial-box style."
Take it or leave it...
Personally I find it challenging and creative to do something like that, and they're pulling it off.

Mr. Teatime - They call it a trailer because they used to come after the movies. The credits were all in the title reel of older movies, because less people in general worked on them and because not every single person got to be in the credits. But when credits started getting longer and they moved them to the end of the movies, they figured no one would see the trailers because no one would sit through the credits. So now they're in front (with a bunch of crappy COMMERCIALS too). ok movie history lesson for the night concluded
And about Sjy Captain - What I have heard is this was all an ongoing project of Kerry Conran, the director/writer. He wrote the software that allows him to drop the actors in from bluescreen work into already completed 3d visuals. He's had the whole movie finished for quite some time; all he had to do was film and pop in the actors! Which is why the movie managed to fly under the radar for so long. People only found out about it during principal filming and now that it's over, so is the movie!
I think it's a really neat concept and I'd like to see how it plays out on the big screen.. It's like Robert Rodriguez's dream of singular directorial vision... maybe one day we can all be able to make our own films this way :D

Funny enough but everyone at art forums seems to out of touch with reality. They see cool CG or animation and rave about good movie this, good movie that.
HAS ANYONE ACTUALLLY SEEN THE TRAILER!!!??
that looks like the dumbest script and casting ever. And how the hell would some shitty ass WWII fighter beat the sleek and new looking bad guy's ships?
And Angelina Jolie should not be cast in this movie.
I think you can tell i don't like retro stories. They all suck, Dick Tracy taking the cake, of course.

PROBABLY... and I am JUST guessing here. THe EXACT same way SO many Artists use the SLEEK new paint programs and their work looks like Dick.... Tracy.
It ain't the technology that makes you a badass it's the person weilding it. In the trailer, which harkens back to those ROCKIN serials from the early 20th century... the evil horde advances and they call for Sky Captain! Well, I guess in the movie Sky Captain is chock full o' skill seeing as how he's whippin' his P.O.S. plane around and evading the "Sleek Bad Guy Ships".
ALL retro stories suck? Don't even want to go there... well, ok... What stories do you prefer?
AND... Angelina Jolie can be in any frikkin' movie she wants, bless her dark, little heart. ESPECIALLY if it's the story of StaleCracker and I get to have many, many amorous scenes with her...
BOOYAH.

im with Stale... this movie looks titts!
i think artists more commonly like these kind of movies because you have to have a little bit is imagination to be able to appreciate them.. thats the part of the brain movies like this are attempting to speak to.. now,, wether or not the movie achieves what it set out for is yet to be seen... fingers crossed..

OK, I was out of line with that "all retro movies suck" thing. But regardless, I dislike those 20's style stories. They seem way too fake for me, even compared to Sci-fi. I guess they just irk me in some way.
As for these kinds of movies taking brains to appreciate...
NO
20's serials do not take brain power, and neither does looking at CG. CG does not make me think; it makes up the world I am watching. If it doesn't get in the way with bad quality then I phase it out and watch the story. If it is spectacular, then I drool over it. If the story sucks and the graphics are good though, the movie will still suck because good graphics don't make a bad movie appreciably better. (FF:The Spirits Within anyone?)
And I find Angelina Jolie to be ugly. Those fat, plastic looking lips of hers creep me out. I think she'd look much better if her lips were normal.

Then maybe you should try to become a writer dfacto :D
I'd watch movies just for their visual style. Some old movies convey ideas and concepts that are just awful, but i wouldn't want to miss their great photography. I've seen some *really* shitty movies, but i watched them till the end just because of the cg. Hell, the only reason i watch superhero movies sometimes is for the added amount of flying and exploding stuff.
I also don't mind Angelina Jolie, although she did lose points for doing tombraider, but Jude Law is really cool. I love the roles he plays and the retro style he conveys. "Road to perdition" for example was a great movie, but i really liked everything i've seen from him so far. Even his name is cooler than me, damnit!
The stargate soundtrack was distracting though.

dfacto: read it again.. i didnt say brains,, i sad imagination..
two COMPLETELY different things.. and i never said that its ok for the story to suck if the graphics are good.. but dont say it sucks just because its not realistic or believable.. because thats absurd.. you might as well go agead and say Beowolf is lame because that little ol barbarian couldnt beat up grendel.
heres something you need to think about.. a movie is a success in my opinion when it creates a "universe" where the characters and events make since in, without breaking "its own" boundaries and maintaining an adequate level of consistancy.. take LOTR for example.. its ok for some hobits and an elf to take out a cave troll because its consistant with the established fantastacle universe.. so what im saying,, is just because the characters in sky captain are human and the planet they are on is earth,, does not mean that the story is not to be viewed as fantasy.. you just have to have the imagination to buy into the universe... assuming they do an adequate job of selling it.. thats the hard part... and im a total film snob..

Lono: ok, I understand and agree with what you say, but Sky Captain deviates from it. When you create a new world it is OK to take liberties with who can do what, but here is what we know:
1)WWII plane have shitty performance when compared to modern planes.
2)Those enemy fighter look pretty modern to me.
therefore the assumption is that the WWII plane would get trashed in a few seconds.
While this movie is unrealistic, when you take such an out of place item such as a WWII fighter, and then place it against modern looking planes, you draw attention to it. Attention makes people start to think, and then they start questioning how a crappy old-school plane can possibly beat up on shiny new ones.
Bryan and Stalecracker: You can have her.
Ancient Kitten: I have thought about writing, but I don't want to waste my time on something that will most likely never even get looked at by a publisher, let alone a producer.
And I never watch movies for their graphics unless they are astounding, but Sky Captian doesn't look it. Movies without content are not as good as those with it. I think the DBZ movie could be an exception. Since its DBZ it will have no story, or a crappy one, and it will be all about action. I hope FOX doesn't mess it up, because I expect one big-bash thrill ride. If it doesn't deliver then they will have managed to screw up possibly the best fighting movie ever.

1)WWII plane have shitty performance when compared to modern planes.
What if it was Howling Mad Murdock from the A-Team steering it?
2)Those enemy fighter look pretty modern to me.
Did you watch "Independence Day?". Will Smith - wait, let me put that in big bold letters for you - WILL SMITH outdogfought (what a word!) shiny space ships.
Bryan and Stalecracker: You can have her.

when i say new universe,, i dont mean physically new,, ie different technology.. i just mean a literary universe.. like indiana jones maby? wasnt believable in real life but you knew going into those movies that everything indie does is pulp and over the top and its totally ok.. the indie universe is flexable that way..
so my point is,, that even if this guy is flying old fighter planes against high tech spacecrafts,, in this "literary" universe, he can overcome them with his superior abilitys as a piolit.. just like indiana jones overcame the hords of nazis and tanks and whatnot with a whip.. the draw to this kind of story is the idea of pure human ability and bravery overcoming technology..

Ancient Kitten: Will has rap powa.
Lono: There are levels of unbelievability that I am willing to accept. If the world is whole and seamless like LOTR or Indiana Jones, it doesn't really irk me that the heroes can overcome insurmountable odds. But when you have different worlds clashing as starkly as in Sky Captin (ie shiny new fighter and old WWII era crap-heap) then it just turns me off. Independence Day was also unrealistic, but I got to see cities vaporized so its all good. Story was very poor though, it has to be admitted.

Cinsev: thank you thank you.. and yes,, i agree.. im really not that big of a Jolie fan either.. tomb raider killed it for me..
but maby this movie will redeem her?
dfacto: hay man,, to each his/her own,,, and theres no accounting for taste,, and any other cliche that comes to mind.. its funny too because i HATED independence day.. i didnt think the visual effects were enough to pull that movie out of the shit hole frome wince it it was born.. there are just soooo many factors that go into to the composition of a good movie that its just too easy to make a bad one.. but,, i try to keep an open mind so that i can appreciate the more subtle quality that sneaks up on you and takes hold when you dont expect it...

i dunno redeeming jolie from tomb raider is a long row to hoe (no pun intended *ahem*) but it could....i mean sky captain is pure,art-deco-style-WWII-fightery-goodness-with-a-side-of-french-fried-potatoes as far as im concerned.
