Eow 110 the Bad side of the city

Brief

Every City has those neighborhoods into which you really don't want to go. I want to see these. I am intentionally not specifying a tie period or a location. It could be the back streets of cheapside in victorian london, the Subura in Imperial Rome. The uncomfortable part of of any modern city... the abandoned neglected part of a future city....

h2rra - ooh kick ass. Yeah, your thumb#2 has a really nice grimey vibe though #1 could also totally be made to work.

Yeah, I haven't got the colours right yet. Man, I'm itching to carry on with it now. Grr... must wait a few hours.

NateShaw - oo, that looks war torn like a bad part of the world, let alone the city.

Ashton - looks like you're going for a kind of derelict under the bridge dockside kinda place. Looking forward to seeing where it goes next.

halvarado/thescala/darkwolf29a go on then! ;)

NateShaw, not only is that a great start, but it just introduced me to Alchemy. Wow, this program is AWESOME, thank you! I've been trying to force myself to be looser, and this program is a lot like how I usually doodle (draw random marks in an area and find something in the chaos) so I think once I figure out a method in this madness it'll be a regular part of my concept routine. =)

--Update--
Here's my first alchemy sketch with a purpose. This was done after messing around/experimenting with the program for probly an hour.

And a midnight post before I go to bed. I'm so slow!
Not very experienced in environments either, so heres hoping I can finish my first EOW!

hideyoshi ...wow. O_O Can I ask how long you think you worked on that? And is there any chance you might be able to send me a link to your WIP-progress? I always love your pieces and I'm curious how they come together. Either way, that's really awesome, the cat seems to contrast just a tad too much with it's surroundings, perhaps this was intentional though, since the cat seems to pull together the sense of foreboding.

Well, EOW is quite a different experience than CHOW haha, in CHOW theres a new WIP every 3 seconds, while EOW seems slightly more solitary. But being new as I am to the Environment scene (pun not intended), I was hoping for some crits and feedback.

I'm taking some advice I read on CA recently, I'm really making myself take my time to try and make a really solid foundation, maybe I'll end up just working it BnW all the way through. Doing a lot of experimenting and a lot of reading, really trying to learn a lot through this process.

Here's something in-progress... Used some background photos that are just sort of temporary, and a bunch of textures for the graffiti and concrete.

Looks like everyone was on the same page this time; lots of perspectival approaches.

Yours is rockin' Hideyoshi!

It was basically all painted and blocked in without doing any line drawing (thats usually how I work) using a few textures also.

Hideyoshi: Sweet!
Mishkin: Nice start but needs some action. Put some bumfights in there or something :teeth:
MarkDN: Starts to look great!
Arthemis: Everything is kinda the same value. I made a very quick overpaint (http://www.juhkov.com/pildid/overpaint.jpg) to show what I would do.
IceMoon: That really is a bad side of the city!

I scrapped the thumbs and started painting something that doesn't make sense

Okay, we'll call this try number 2 since I didn't quite make the dead line on CHOW 153... but after doing some research on this I came up with this....

I took bad part of the city to mean those who suffer in the slums around the world, often within sight of rather lavish dwelling... I

I am having a lil bit of a hard time since I don't really have a work flow, or anything... I don't know much about under painting or over painting, or really any commonly used methods... so I want to push hard and learn. Please crit. and if possible point me to any good digital painting tuts showing workflows...

THANKS!!!

h2rra: oooh dude. I like. Strong vibes of Jaisalmer. Do you know it? If not, I super-strongly recomend an image-search, it'd be a rich source of inspirational ref for your piece.

Hideyoshi: Not somewhere to hang around at any time of day!

I have a bit of a problem with this topic - or maybe it's a problem with myself - which is that these places we're coming up with all look super-interesting, like the kind of places I'd definitely want to visit and bust out my sketch pad because of the cool atmosphere and view.

hmmm.

Mark – gonna be cycling home through some bad areas of London for reference tonight.

ArtbyWard
April 8th, 2009, 04:22 PM
I'm finished I guess :) (edit: well maybe not, maybe be the middle part has to much contrast? Does anyone have tips on how I can create a more realistic sense of depth?)

Zakarra
April 8th, 2009, 04:49 PM
IceMoon - I love the concept on this image. It's kind of scary actually, I guess that's why I like it so much.

But I see what you mean by depth. The main thing is that the foreground pipe and junk city seem like they are a close up drawing of a miniature. I think you could help this by upping the atmospheric perspective.

Add more blue tint near the top of the first tower and fade out the receding towers more with haze. It might be nice to throw on an Overlay layer and see what kind of results you could get with that.

The other thing that might help would be making the lower city look more like a city and not just a pile of junk. I know that it's supposed to be chaotic and unorganized, but there should still be some city-like elements left.

Nice work!

Icemoon,

Looking great, make those birds way smaller, they look way too big compared to the ships, piers and structures below, that should help to avoid them from killing the scale.

This is my first EOW here. Actually its my first post on Conceptart. Im relatively new to art and... oh why bother, you'll see. Heres a WIP of my entry. The end scene in "The One" meets a shanty village, meets the Calcutta slum. I need to look up some tutorials on water and metal.

Oh and i used some of Barontieri's brushes, and some other dudes. Do i need to include links in the final entry, or cant i use others brushes at all?

I think I won't be working on this one anymore because my psd file got corrupted and I lost my mojo. I did spend 2-3 more hours on this piece but all that progress is lost.

Athemis: I'm glad it was helpful
MarkDN: Thanks for the tip! That kind of architecture is exaclty what I wanted to find when I was searching for ref pics!

hey nice pic its really come along i have 1 small suggestion to improve it the ocean disapears on level with the bottom of the second pillar. The ocean would expand back almost until the vanishing point where ocean and sky meet so i think bringing the level of the water up in the BG above the bottom of the second pillar(maybe a CM or 2) would add more depth to the image and that pillar would sit better in the image

This is what I've got so far.

I think grenogs is quite right, and I've been trying to decide where to put such... 'life debris'

This is the point in every painting where I tend to lose a bit of steam, that whole "Finishing" part, I don't have much practice in finishing a piece, and I'm still kinda learning how. Theres a few details I've noticed since exporting this pic, the scaffolding/radiotower thing in the top left needs work, and what was originally supposed to be cloth in the bottom right is just horrid. (Also, I was trying not to 'over color' it) Well, here goes:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v465/wolveeberserker/badisdeoftown_color2.jpg

I'm also thinking of tilting the entire thing just a tad and cropping upon finalization to give it that classic "Dutch Angle" look.

geronimo66 a couple crits: I think the texture is a little too pronounced, it looks like a texture overlay so I recommend toning it down a bit and (assuming youre using photoshop) learning about the mask tool, here's a tutorial that helped me out (No offense intended by the name, haha)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cz387Vy0Ps0
I watched all of this guy's tutorials recently and they're pretty helpful, as he puts it "incredibly useful tools you didn't know you needed until you knew about them"

geronimo66
April 12th, 2009, 01:02 PM
yea, I plan to dumb down the texture and erase it where needed, but have left it in so far as a guide... I need to get lose, but stuff looks like an illustration and not "concepty". :)

good work djinn,...

maybe with a stray animal like a cat make better the idea of a lonely street.

or two dogs fightings for food,

I think that the ground is very clean, maybe some papers, tins/cans of beer, wine or cokes, and trash in the street would be great, or a grafitti on the wall.

is just some ideas, : S

Looks nice, i think your the only one who managed to capture the entire city :P Usually i would have gone for thicker smoke, but since that would have covered alot of the city, thin is fine. Theres really not an easy way to do pictures like this, you just need a hell of alot of patience. I like the rendering on the buildings up front. Maybe you could make another "red/dark", the rest of the picture seems a bit blank.

Heres mine. A bit rushed since i probably wont have time to work on it tommorow. It could use some more attentention, i would love some critique. Then ill just try to sneek it in between my homework.
