-Ceremonial Gunboat-

I'm starting out pretty wild and letting my hand dictate the universe that my gunboat dwells in.
The main focus I'd like in my design is something that a country would be proud to have as a figurehead vessil, something that would be perfect propaganda.

first round of thumbs/roughs ... lets bounce back some ideas Shawn ..

BUT ENOUGH TALK! HAVE AT YOU!!

Wow, great thumbs sammy, you definitely got the functionality and form nailed, something I should work on. Here are some I worked out in my new sketchbook, trying to make it grand and epic. Will keep on working on it. :chug:

This is going to be one really cool battle. We have all seen what you guys can do with these sorts of ships, so this will be one that i will be watching closely.

Both of your designs look really cool so far.

this is one of the fights I'm gonna follow closely. I've been impressed by both of your work a lot lately (started to wander around different areas of CA , and I hope I have found the most of your posts, guys)

Good luck to both of you!

Nice thumbs guys. On the second sheet sammy 5 & 7 totally rock. I think 7 would fit the theme perfectly with a little modifaction.

BTW are we allowed to rate threads for thunderdome 7?

Wicked awesome shawn, you got some fine ones! My personal fav is the top of the middle (in the last post) ... very nice smooths and angles, and the whole sillouhette fits together nicely!

It will be awesome for you to have a huge illustration of something mechanical like this in your 'folio.

All these remind me very much of the Panzer dragoon seriese.. that's a good thing :D , not only is it my fav game, but the game opened my eyes to what concept-design is..
here's a link for inspiration http://moonapples.com/lagi/index.html

I think I like your no.7, no2 and 1 most, really cool lots of interesting shapes.

BIG BIG thanks for that Panzar dragoon link. I knew they had some kick ass concept work behind the game. I just couldn’t find much of it on the net! I played it on Sega Saturn and totally enjoyed it, love the environment, it has a great mood! Now I know who to look for when I need to find stuffs like this. :)

A lot of your ship designs are really cool, so I don't even want to pick favs. I would love to see all of them done up nicely.

Cool Panzer Dragoon link Sammy. I always loved the art from the games (unfortuantely I never owned a Saaturn so I couldn't play the games then :(). Orta has made up for that though :D

Anyway back on topic... Cool designs. Waiting so so patiently...

Sammy
December 19th, 2003, 06:12 AM
Aven, Orta was gorgious.. it was nice to see smilebit pull through with a new Panzer Dragoon...
But so few people got to experience Panzer Dragoon Saga, which was very amazing.. (Smilebit's most likely working on the next Panzer Dragoon RPG.. lets cross our fingers)

anyways, fleshed two of my fav designs.

Sammy, thanks, I tried to make the thumbs cleaner, the first few attempts were more like scribbles.

You did an awesome job. The elongated format really brings a cinematographic feel. I would shift the 3 ships at the back slightly. The straight line formation could be logical but feels a little awkward and scatter some smaller buildings around.

I find the ship is not standing out that much and it’s a little hard to judge the scale of the boat. probably because of too much usage of black and those details that can be found in your conceptual is not showing here especially the back of the boat which has some good elements in helping to show the proportions. The river has a very good way of bringing everything together, I like it the best.

Now thats a tough challenge to beat! I did more roughs yesterday.

Great stuff guys.
ShawnYe, are those digital?

Aven
January 6th, 2004, 04:26 PM
That is a really cool pianting Shawn. You can always tell one of yours through your really nice use of reds.

The camera angle and scale is cool, but the ship needs a bit more colour variation. Maybe make the sails a different colour.

Sammy
January 6th, 2004, 08:11 PM
I really like the sails on your ship man, like they're tryin' to hold in some force that's supporting the ship. The pencil integrated with digital, you pulled off really well.

Yea, I use too much dark on my images... The monitor I color on is VERY light, and just lately I've seen my images on other computers and was supprised how dark they are. I have a really hard time with values and color changes within a paint, how do you get it done sometimes? Do you do a black and white variation??

anyways, majestic paint as always Shawn :chug:

Sammy

I'm glad you guys like it :) sometimes it's hard to tell untill you show the designs to others... so I took another stab at it.

Sammy, thanks, I'm very fond of that thumb at the center far right and the front of the ship has slightly more curves compare to the detailed version which makes it a little more appealing I find.

Sometimes, I do a B/W version to check if the focus is in place and get the tones right. I also used alot of help from the colour and contrast adjustment since I guess around a lot most of the time. Keep rocking!

MGH, yes all the colours are digital over the pencil sketches.

Aven, I never did realize I use that much red until now. I would probably use more colour variation for the ship if I'm going to take it further, thanks!

Thanks Happy Camper, glad you enjoy it.

edit: I was referring the the detailed version above this, this last one looks good!
