Joachim and I are thinking of a subject at the moment. We will update this thread soon with more info...
The Subject:
Design the next Big Movie hero
Show the hero in ATLEAST one full color illustration.

I sent this Email to Joachim:
Hey Joachim
I have had some busy days, friday got totally screwed up and todays been busy getting ready for the trip.
So I haven't gotten that much time for ideas:
This is somethings that sprung to my mind though:
1. Underground based people eating civilization or
2. Settlers of the new world
These aren't that original though, so if you've got something better feel free to suggest that instead.
These would probably need some more guidlines to them though.
Let me hear what you think.
cheers
-Alex

Sounds like The Time Machine, with the Morlocks.
But, yeah. Decide on the topic fellas!
Joachim
December 15th, 2003, 09:33 AM
If I come up with something I will make sure to write it down. But, honestly for me, it's not that important what we draw, everything is ok. SO, I'll think, and when you want to start drawing, if we haven't come up with something new we just pick one of yours...
I loved the classic game character compo (thunderdome 5 or something), but it would be stupid to do that again. Something up that alley if you got any ideas, that would be fun. If we go for one of yours I agree that we should concrete the idea a bit more (guidelines)
When was the deadline again ? :) February ? THat's still some time
al-x
December 17th, 2003, 06:35 AM
Deadline's the 10th of febuary. Im kind of excited to get started, but Im in Hong Kong right now and don't have access to computer as often as usual...
Send me an email or write it down here if you get some good idea, really want to get started soon...
Joachim
December 19th, 2003, 08:22 AM
Ok, I have one suggestion.
How about the next movie hero. ex.indiana jones, kill bill, etc. Maybe even pick out a director that would direct this movie to make it more concrete, like Coen brothers or whatever ? Could even pick out an actor for the job. Dunno, just an idea.
Or, if we pick out a story/book that hasn't been filmized and design that character or cover how it will look. Wheel of time for example, hitchhikers guide to galaxy, biggles (that could be cool) or whatever.....
Just want something less sci-fi or standard fantasy. GOt any other ideas, something not cliché I think we could have more fun and challenge.
al-x
December 25th, 2003, 02:56 AM
Love that idea Joachim.
Let get this going then.
We just have to get some more guidlines though.
Don't think we should base the character on a book, design it ourselves is better. (sorry if this message is hard to read, the computer Im on doesn't let me use the enter key, will edit it later, IS NOW EDITED!).
Medium: Atleast one full color illustration of the character, then it is up to us how many other studies of the character we want to show (Weapon design and such).
Characterdesign: What personality? Religion?
We should probably know a bit more about him/her.
Why not let the conceptart members come up with some ideas for the character.
Tell us what our character should be!
Joachim
December 29th, 2003, 06:28 AM
Ok, everything is fine by me. Who should you ask, etc...
al-x
December 30th, 2003, 06:24 AM
Back from Hong Kong now...
My internet service at home has gotten fucked up, so Im still without a connection. Will probably fixed after new year.
What is the public opinion here, how do the ca members want the next moviehero to be?
Doesn't anyone have an opinion here?
gallon
December 30th, 2003, 09:54 AM
I want a alcoholic, anti-hero who saddles up against his will to save the world, and never wears the long robe or any clothes of that kind, maybe in a realistic today or SCi/fi-light version of world.
Just to get everyóne started!
Joachim
December 30th, 2003, 01:40 PM
I agree with you there gallon.
To be honest I don't know how much more guidelines we need actually, in my opnion. Because it should be a certain freedom, creativity and difference. If we say the topic is "Movie Hero of Tomorrow" that is good enough for me. THen it's just who solves that most creative. If it is with a cape and spandex or a alcoholic, anti-hero who saddles up against his will to save the world, is up to the artist himself. So then the creative way the artist solve this task is as important as the crafting of the actual picture.
Don't you agree ?
al-x
January 1st, 2004, 08:57 AM
Okay... we'll get started then.
Just thought it would be nicee to see what other people want in an action hero. I know how I would want mine to look, but that doesn't mean that the general opinion thinks the same.
Lets just say we create a hero for the modern world who is a modern person. We shouldn't need more guidlines than that.
No magic, No unrealistic sci-fi. Not to cliche...
Joachim
January 5th, 2004, 08:51 AM
it's ok to have more guidelines. I just thought, after looking at other topics for the other thunderdome contests, that it really didn't need that much more guidelines.
For me I think the "guideline" for our contest is that it should follow fit a movie hero, something that could fit to be "the next big hero" within movies.
Examples of earlier heroes like this that pops into my mind is "robocop, indiana jones, ripley (alien), inspector gadget, james bond, mad max, etc....for me all these fits the spesification,...so as long as the character is something that involves a human actor/actress the rest is just how creative one can be.
Is this too vague you think ? I don't mind more specifications, if that is wanted, just thought you wanted to start. For me I wont start until later i january so I got time for changes. Up to you ;)
al-x
January 7th, 2004, 03:22 AM
No that sounds ok. We don't need more guidlines, haven't had time to browse through the other Thunderdome topics.
Neither I will be able to start seriously until somtime next week on this. I've just run some ideas through my head and done some small doodles.
By the way, should we show our work in progress here, or should we keep it secret?
Joachim
January 20th, 2004, 06:10 AM
Hey AL-x hows it coming for you ? I'm planning to start doodeling this week. I don't mind posting wips, makes it more fun, so I will :)

Here comes some early doodles.
I'm trying to do a modern chinese girl. Combining a punk style with traditional chinese looks. But still make her look like a "normal" person. Don't know... maybe this is boring, maybe I should do something more extreme. But I don't want to do a Sci-Fi nor Fantasy character.
Here's some design doodles of her clothing...
http://www.alextornberg.com/art/sketches/tdome7_clothingdesign01.jpg
Gonna do three or four more of those, bofore I'll make the final choice
Some more quick doodles trying to find her a fitting hairstyle...

January 25th, 2004, 11:40 AM
Hey Al-x this is going nice ! And I hate you for posting before me :)
I like your character designs ! The last three are better than the first three in my opinion. It's hard for me to say if they are clichés or original, because that has just as much to do with the setting and design of the movie as much as the actual clothing. I do have an idea of my own, it will be something totally different from your thoughts but that is the fun part, it's not supposed to be the same.
Keep it coming lookinmg forward to see what more you have in mind for this character !
Joachim
January 26th, 2004, 03:07 PM
Ok Al-x, I've started as well :)
I have been thinking of many different ideas, and had some creative talks with my mates chester and mikael ( so thx to them fo lotsa nice input ).
So, this is what I've ended up with. I'm not sure yet if I'm gonna redesign the clothes or just further develop them, I'll see, but I will not start mocking with other ideas. I kinda think that this keeps a certain amount of reality as well as something totally ridicolous with humour (which I wanted).... and you never know, this could happen in China ;)
http://www.joachimart.com/forum/td7_characters_1.jpg
http://www.joachimart.com/forum/td7_characters_2.jpg
ps! I'm very curious of what you will do next and what kinda "movie" you are having in mind. You've made a lot of very nice sketches. Are they all of the same character ?, or just different ideas. Seems like you've decided your heroine should have red hair and be something in an apocolyptic world and that she is a female...is that right ? would love to hear your thoughts.
al-x
January 26th, 2004, 05:21 PM
Hehe... man thats sick! :D
Love it.
You guys from artplant have been gracing this community with a lot of humor lately.
This character of mine has evolved from earlier ideas. At one stage she was a manhating stripper that went out killing her customers after work. But I thought noway that that would work in reality, you have to see the irony in that to be able to enjoy the movie (and there's way to many stupid americans in the world that wouldn't do that. No offense to all americans here, stupid americans can be found all over the world ;) ). So from that this girl evolved. She is kind of inspired of characters from cyberpunk writers as Gibson and Noon, but set in todays chinatown. The story is based on old chinese folklore (my girlfriend is from Hong Kong so she's been some inspiration for this).
She's a drugaddict and pickpocket. She use her laptop as her main weapon, otherwise she loves shooting holes in people with her colt 45 or any other weapon or tool that is avaible. She is Wei Lo Leuy (don't know how to spell it really) It translates into fox girl anyway. She's not human nor a spirit but something inbetween. Damned to fight the creatures of the hidden world until she dies or they all have been defeated. (Ahh... shit! this all sound so VERY cliché)
...and no no apocalyptic world, but yeah some of these designs became a bit like that, Don't know why spikes and boots looks like that really. But I promise, coloring won't look apocalyptic

Here are some more..clothing design. Micke suggested I did some situation sequences, how they can solve different tasks like climbing, etc... we'll see. But, this is the colors and outfit, so I will start think about the final picture now as well.

Would be cool if you showed how they solved diffrent situations. Love your art and the more you show the happier I'll be.
I plan on showing my hero in diffrent situations with several images. None of those boring static poses I've shown in the sketches. But I wont do all in color though.
Would like to design the creatures and demons she would be fighting to, but that will have to be a later project. Work is just piling up on me now (but I'm guessing you have a load of stuff you need to do also).
by the way... I actually think the pink one is cooler than the red one
Joachim
January 28th, 2004, 07:51 AM
Al-x
Yeah I agree the red looks cooler on the sketches when it's more pink. But, in the final painting I think strong red will fit better, if not it will only look like the suit is too washed out...but with lines and no shading the strong red becomes a bit dark....
I know exactly how I want the final picture to look like, it will be a lot of fun to make. Anyway...
situational sketches coming up:

some seriously bad@$$ siamese kung fu twins you designed there, Joachim!
one thing, though ... the design on those shoes is the Puma design (example (http://store.puma.com/pumaUSStore/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=PumaUS&category%5Fname=MensHeritageFootwear&product%5Fid=24746013&productType=Footwear&mainCategory=Men&shopBy=style))
the Asics design looks like this: (example (http://productacj.asicsamerica.com/onitsukatiger/gears.asp?gender=mens&category=shoes&productid=240001869))
am I being anal? probably, but I LOVE MY PUMAS!
teehee :D
Joachim
January 28th, 2004, 06:21 PM
Thx guys
Aven, Haha the can, of course yes. If I find the time just have to do it, I got two cool for it allready ;)
Dahsramu, Wow the resemblance to the puma shoes are frightening!, I never saw those. Anal yes ;), but good point. And Puma are cooler than Asics. I changed the name, Asics would never make those shoes so I was inconsistent. thx (just push refresh)
al-x, how are you coming along with your concept ?
I really looking forward to see more. 2 weeks left ;) Got any idea for your last picture (?),
I know exactly what you mean about time, of course no point starting to design creatures etc...instead of making many more concepts, a few lines about the character or movie would be cool just so it's easier for others to picture your concept.
al-x
January 29th, 2004, 01:18 PM
Yeah. Designing creatures will have to be a later project. I'm actually playing with the idea of doing a graphic novel on this (but I will never have the time for that, but it was so long since I did any serious comicking).
The plan is for me to present this character in about two-three sheets. With atleast one fullcolored picture and a short written description. Thank god that I'm pretty fast drawer though 'cause I have a lot of other stuff to do also
By the way Joachim isn't it time for you to do comic too, Micke brought you into his?

anyway, here's my finished image...I put it in the thunderdome final thread along with a collected character sketch development sheet with the ones I posted here. If you want I can add yours in the post too, or you can make your own, I guess the admins here will figure it out anyway.

The idea with the wideformat is doing a frame from the movie. it's 16*9 that's why all the space on the sides. Will add text and title below.

Hey Al-x this is nice. I think you wrapped it up good and with very nice design. I don't know what the logo means :)
Funny how chinese signs can look ugly for those that write chinese while they look really nice for those that do not undestand'em. For me they look good :) What do they mean ?

Xpressions -> Yeah love his movies, Dark City is one of my all time favourite movies. And the first Crow movie (the only Crow movie in my opinion) is one of the best Comicmovies ever. I'm really looking forward to I, Robot an Alex Proyas movie based on a novel by Asimov, that'll be great.
And I love beautiful asian girls, the real model for this character wasn't really Zhang Ziyi, it was my beautiful girlfriend (http://alextornberg.com/person/images/pictures/Kaki.jpg)
(hehe... she's gonna be like totally mad at for showing a picture of her). But she isn't an actress so I don't think she would be good as the next actionhero so I thought Zhang Ziyi would be a good fit, she's also an extremly beautiful woman...
On my entry: I not that happy with the colored illustration, it feels to stiff. I had several ideas that I balled around, but at the end I choose this. Now I feel that probably didn't make the right choice. But what the heck it turned out decent anyway.
I'm more fond of the greyscale illustrations....
