Eow 103 Tomb Raider New Level
As winner of The Popular poll for Eow 100. This topic was devised by Gaius

Brief
your assignment is to design a scene from a new Level of Tombraider (I hope you have heard of it.) this would , of course be a huge stretch for me since I have never played it).Required: some specific goal object, and he route to it should be obscured and obstructed. The deadline efor this round is Solid as it would be in a realworld situation. The resulting Environment should look like it belongs in the world of tombraider. so I guess some reasearch will be nessisary.

I would say make up your own level. Could be anywhere.
No need to reference an earlier game.

Well, the thing is that Lara is always (or mostly) exploring some old ruins and ancient places.... i was also going for some djungle-temple ruins because i feel like doing such a piece right now, havenīt done that in quite a while now. But thatīs just the generic TR-Level, djungle ruins. I bet iīm not the only one whoīs doing an enviro like that, but is it okay?
Like i said, itīs not really something entirely new, but doing something completely different wouldnīt be Tomb Raider anymore, would it...?

Gaius
January 10th, 2009, 11:36 AM
Dont stress over it folks.

Criteria:

(i) Would fit into the Tombraider Universe, ie: jungles, temples, catacombs ,oil rigs, factorys, pyramids , underwater bases etc

Lara croft has been lots of places.

Not familiar with the game or movie so... Here's a temple with your super-natural jazz going on inside. Maybe would like to do another one, but we'll see. Atlantis would be cool, but I don't know if that been done in the game already?

Cool stuff Hazzard and 064; those definitely would make good scenarios for an adventurous archeologist.

I have really bad artists block this week, so im finding this really frustrating, especially since i *really* love this topic. I've wasted a lot of time going over the top trying to change and tweak things to fix the perspective/add in more detail etc on paper and digitally but its all been kinda futile- i just cant get it to work. Hopefully ill work my way out of this corner before the due date :(.

WIP update. I feel slightly guilty that this has changed so much, but it really is for the better. The odd angled walls of the old one really messed up the perspective, spent a lot of time today playing about with it but nothing looked right.

I took a stab at this as well today. I've never really done enviro's, and I guess it shows. There's no real focal point and the composition is kinda bland...It's not finished in any way, but I'd like some good ol' critique :)

Nice work guys.

Skipping finishing this one, i jumped in headfirst during an art block after a week of not drawing so my approach was flawed before i even began. On a positive note it did ring alarm bells that i need to do more study, which is now my priority. Plus my paint technique loosened up a bit. Heres how far i got-

I think your right about the focal point, I think you should do some more
thumbnails to solve that, I think its good considering your still going to detail it more, but yeah composition is huge in my opinion, I can see thier is like a ruin but It doesnt really stir me. I would appreciate a return Critique if you have the time:)

hey thanks, yeah I just started painting when I should've thumbnailed :)

About yours: I like the paintdauby feel of the image, blends great with the theme, but I really think that you've put the focus a bit too much on story and the characters when the environment should be most important.

Also, I don't really get a sense of scale. The Tombraider universe is known for it's grand vistas and epic landscapes while yours looks a bit cluttered and small.

Finished. The work was mainly inspired by Jim Hatama's entries for Epic EOW. There are WIPs:

1). Rough sketch
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v613/Cinot/concept_art/eow103_tombraider_level/wip1.jpg

2). Erased those blade things as they were distracting too much for my taste. Also, I've decided to make a foggy atmosphere
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v613/Cinot/concept_art/eow103_tombraider_level/wip2.jpg

3). More painting, details and texture overlays
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v613/Cinot/concept_art/eow103_tombraider_level/wip3.jpg

4). Increased contrast
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v613/Cinot/concept_art/eow103_tombraider_level/wip4.jpg

5). Added water reflection and more textures
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v613/Cinot/concept_art/eow103_tombraider_level/wip5.jpg

6). Added water waves
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v613/Cinot/concept_art/eow103_tombraider_level/wip6.jpg

7). I thought there was too much of white space (there where light source is) and it didn't look well, so I've added more fog. Added a Gradient Layer with Overlay blending to create colors. Added few special layers for Color Balance, played abit with them and selected the layer that gave the best colors for my taste. Added speculars on water around tunel entrance. Added a ship to give a history and dynamic. Then, for end some color and contrast tweaking. And there's finished piece:

Hahah, I feel like the kid in school who is always running late to class. XD

I honestly don't recall too much from the Tomb Raider games besides being eaten by tigers and drowning a lot. (I have so much trouble with inverted axis games.) But what I did remember and love about Lara is her twin desert eagles. So I wanted something desert-y as a bit of symbolism. I was aiming for an abandoned oasis temple. I don't feel like it's fleshed out that well, but that's why I keep trying to do these to get better, hahah.
