Spartan Camp #68 - 50 gestures + Optional Study of "trolls"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 15th of December.

The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras....and can be in any media, digital or traditional is fine.

In addition to this, participants can choose to do a Optional Study of "trolls", in any media. Black and White or Colour is fine.

PS...critting each other is highly encouraged!! Let's help each other get better!

MeTaL-Mike i just want to say this: In my opinion, a study is the act of observating something that is real and trying to understand that reality trough a draw... we can even study things without drawing them, we are allways studying things constantly, even if we look at an object for one second, that object was in that way already studyed by us...

we can also, by chance, do studies of human beings and frogs and then mix what we've learned from both in a drawing to make something that can be called "troll", but tecnically we can't make a study of "trolls" because they do not actually exist.. ehehehe


i know this may sound stupid in a certain way...and pointless, and i'm actually laughing about it right now.. xD but i felt like speaking this crap... x)

and i should have done a study of a fat human being and a frog (as i said) or something that looks like a frog.. r something that does not look like a frog, whatever, and do that before i actually draw the troll

lol im saying this because i didnt do it.. =X

so here is my "unstudied" troll lets call it that way x) it has more like hyena ears and fat-zombie body :| and a little gay too

i understand what you mean man but! you can also study from other pictures as well. there are a lot of pictures of trolls out there man, differed kind of trolls.

The ides is to study the characteristics of a troll. you know, when someone says "troll" you automatically get a certain picture in your head. but i know what you mean.

maybe you can post a list of things that i can post as optional studies. that goes for everyone actually.

AndreRuben; Appreciated the input! I'm sure you're right on the definition. Mike is usually easy on the rules though, and so was the former activity leader. Anyways, nice to see you're still in ;). Try and always 'finish' the posemaniacs studies. For example if you always leave the feet out, you're also not practising balance and all that. Are these timed or are you just short on time? Anyways, fast gestures are good practice too. Like the troll btw. Him scratching his butt, wearing those pants, and the whole pose really add to the 'character'. See you next week!

Metal-Mike; Loved the optional topic. I'll start thinking on some other possibilities. I like the 'free' topics like 'trolls', but you can also go for specific architecture, fashion, art styles, technical drawings, study of an artists' style or specific work/painting. Hoping you'll have more free time on your hands soon to start participating again.

I skipped the last spartan camp, my gestures became too pathetic and I listened to my perfectionist self. there are really weak things among my gestures now too (I barely made 50 gestures, I was very inactive this week), but I made some nicer ones too. I feel I became a little closer to the mystery of gestures (but I have great difficulties with legs, it's maddening).

This is my first ever post. I'm having problems with my scanner, so I can't scan the rest of my gesture sketches, or the troll images, but here is what I could get scanned.

MeTaL-Mike: yes we can study other draws, in fact i do that sometimes, but in that way we are studying a "study" made by someone else.. i mean, we are studying their errors also..
Of course its allways a challenge to copy the masters and try to draw the way they do.. and i encourage people to do it! just choose well what drawing you will make a study of.. =)

And you're suggesting we make a list of optional studies?
how about this: whoever makes the 50 gestures each week, will suggest an item for study.. so, if 4 peolpe draw the 50 poses we will have 4 items. it means in the next 4 weeks we will have the items choosen. when the 4th week is over, the people who drew the 50 that week will suggest new items for further weeks..

do you think its a good idea?


Anthis: those were 10 seconds each, i will start to spend more time with them now, in order to go step further in my comprehension of the human form. =) glad you like my troll, i dont like it that much... i preffer your trolls way better than my =)



shiNIN: just keep in mind that everything becomes clearer (including how to draw legs) when you draw every day! =) "A drawing a day keeps bad art away"

the day 15th is gone, new round please mike! :) i'm noticing that between each 2 or 3 spartan camps we lose an ammount of days that could be converted into another spartan camp hehehe

I will be gone for a while (I visit my Mom who has no Net. I've packed my sketchbook/pencils/tablet, of course), I really hope I will be more active than I was in the last weeks, things became a little busy (for example, I bought my first motorbike! I drew it, but not very well...)...

I'll be back in January and draw better and better gestures!

Hey guys, bad news. I can't do the spartan anymore. I have loads of shit to do and keep forgetting about you guys. If someone is interested in the responsibility please take over. would be fucked up to let this die!!

you don't have to me a moderator or anything, just create a new thread in the community activity and copy the text from the first post of the last weeks round, or make something new up yourself. sorry dudes just too much other stuff on my shoulders.

Hello fellow spartans,

As MeTaL-Mike stated, he will no longer be posting the Spartan Camp. A shame, because he led this challenge for a long time and also provided us with a good deal of nice optional studies.
I will keep this thing rolling and post a new Spartan Camp weekly. Draw, and spread the word! See you in the next thread.
