I have a problem "cheating" by using gesso with my watercolors; it makes them easier to work with. This was an attempt to paint without gesso for once.

It isn't cheating to use gesso. Whatever works for you is right.

Well, I'd love to see more of these. I didn't even know you could paint such good portraits with watercolors. :D Btw, what is this gesso you're talking about?

Gesso is the white stuff that you use to prime a canvas with. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gesso.

Kudos to you for even having the guts to use watercolor...I'm rather terrified of them! Looks great so far, now just do more!
