this is not an icon, but I am practicing some of the icon techniques. the background symolizes the red clay that man was made from. in a true icon clay is puddled and painted on, sanded to a flat smoother surface and burnished with a stone untill it has a mirror like reflective surface, the green is the first layer of color, green is the color of man, it would be applied with egg tempra, a mixture of egg membrane vinigar water and pigments, the light source of an icon resonates out from the eyes. the gaze of the eyes are focused upwards to symbolize meditation on God. the only figure in icon scripting with eyes that stare forward are the eyes of Jesus, all saints archangles and other figures will always look up twoards god.http://www.conceptart.org/artist/andrew-jones/images/auga.jpg

from what you've said so far the idealogy behind icons seem quite interesting alone, even more interesting seeing as how you're incorperating it into your self portraits.
