Ooooo, interesting.

Do I need to clarify what 5 enviros I'll do within a topic or just choosing the 'epic' and getting that approved is enough?

Pawkfox
November 11th, 2008, 09:43 AM
Well that was an.. not horrible but difficult read.

So let's see. We draw 5 environments based on one of said topics.
(e.g Alice in wonderland)

Must the style be alike that of said topic?
If you chose Alice, must the artwork be Disney inspired or what?

I'm not entirely following as you can see.

they must be designed to be seen together and layed out in a thoughtful fashion

Like a super wide panorama? explain.

chaosrocks
November 11th, 2008, 09:51 AM
oh goddess please
you choose which Enviros you do

Pawk fox
Alice is NOT Disney. NONONONONONOOOOOOOOO!
I specified literature, as in words. so as not to get interpretations of other peoples visions

the style must be an interpretation of the topic and be cohesive
the Five Environments need no be attached into a singlepanorama
but they need to be layed out to be seen together. as in Visually designed as a whole

Pawkfox
November 11th, 2008, 10:30 AM
Okay then.. I think I understand.

How's stargate for a topic? Approved? :p

I'd love to take part if I can find the time-if I do I presume there would be no objections to Don Quixote de la Mancha?

AndreRuben
November 11th, 2008, 10:42 AM
i think i dind't understand it very well..

but I want to pic the world of OZ! I remember it was one of my favourite fairy tales in my early years.. it would be nice to dive into that world again

So, I need to draw 5 diferent enviros from OZ?

The first thing that comes to my mind is the yellow brick road. I supose that would be one of the 5 enviros that i must draw right?

and what does it means it has to be from the same artist style? do i have to paint them all similair to each other in terms of way-to-ilustrate? Or do I have to search for artists wich drew the first concepts from the book and follow their style?

Kamikazebob

DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNE.

and my work begins.

btw Chaos... with Dune do I need to go by the first book or can I go be the series...?

arttorney
November 11th, 2008, 11:08 AM
This is just a joke, Chaos.

Rather than an RPG I thought about doing Dante's Inferno and pitching it to Hallmark as a new series of "Go to Hell" cards. I think it's a winner.

I actually would love to do the Inferno, but I don't think I have time to do it proper justice before the deadline. I'll see.

Dark Materials, Dune, or Oz...Maybe something entirely different.

Great idea chaos!

i feel like such a big noob , couldnt get what this means :S :S please explain sm1

I think another way of phrasing this is, What kind of audience are you trying to tell this story to?
From Wiki Entry:
"The term demographics as a noun is often used erroneously in place of demography, the study of human population, its structure and change. Although there is no absolute delineation, demography focuses on population structure, processes and dynamics, whereas demographics is most often used in the fields of media studies, advertising, marketing, and polling, and should not be used interchangeably with the term "demography" or (more broadly) "population studies"."

November 11th, 2008, 12:42 PM
ok Stargate is a NO. LITERATURE ! Words for you to translate into visions. Stargate is already visual.

on the oz question, dive into the books and come up with your own images. I don't want rehashings. and you get to pic what 5 environments you want to use.

daveneale don quixiote is a definate YES why didn't I think of that?

By style I mean that all the enviros might want to be in the same medium and style. Your choice, your style.

giggle at the "go to hell " cards.. you will notice it says the Divine comedy, which gives you the Paradiso and the purgatoririo to work with too.

as for working with Dune.. I stick to the first book , there's plenty scope there and lest you want to e overloaded... beware the movie images. you don't have to stick to the frist book though . I would

which reminds me
Milton's Paradise lost.

hunchback
November 11th, 2008, 01:07 PM
i definately want to do this.

Can I do Dantes Divine Comedy?
It is very descriptive and looks like theres a lot to work from.

And can it be anything in the poem like five of the nine levels, like lust and gluttony and purgator?

Pawkfox
November 11th, 2008, 01:11 PM
Aw man. Stargate is a book dammit :(
But okay. Crap, that means I'd actually have to read one of those books within a few days to get time for the enviros. I don't think I can pull it off. Took me 3months to get through that weird book harry potter :P

chaosrocks
November 11th, 2008, 01:13 PM
I'll give you Harry Potter, if you promise to try to make it different from the movies.

I'd like to give this one a shot, how about doing Bram Stoker's "Dracula"?

chaosrocks

dracula is a yes, although it is a little less than epic :P again avoid the movie images

Sorknes
November 11th, 2008, 01:29 PM
I've had a "half-go" on the Malazan Books of the Fallen then? Author: Steven Erikson - a bloody wonder of a series. The world is made by him and Ian Cameron Esslemont who has also written a couple of books in the same world.

If anybody else have read it, I'd *love* to see some more takes on those epic places.

As second option I'd hold any of China Mièville's books. You know you'd love to do some steampunk underneath a mastodont ribcage or floating ocean cities...

chaosrocks
November 11th, 2008, 01:41 PM
Malazan is a go

nimbusnacho
November 11th, 2008, 02:00 PM
Hell, I'm gonna give this a shot. Not usually an enviro person, but no better time to start than the present.

I think I'll tackle Song of Ice and Fire, I don't see that this would be a problem, but if you say it's not okay I'll find something else.

Maybe it's too close to LotR type stuff?

Chibihomey
November 11th, 2008, 02:35 PM
How About the Hitchhicker's Guide series?

TASmith
November 11th, 2008, 02:43 PM
Okay, I'd like to do this, although I can't promise getting much past the sketch stages. My environments would be of a world I'm creating for a comic book - the lands of the Telav and beyond. The idea is to have a largely unexplored world with lots of tropical locales in a Renaissance/Baroque setting, filled with magic and crazy creatures. It's not based on any literature except what I've written myself. The focus would be marvelous nature, and manipulation of natural forces through magic, i.e. huge storms, funnel clouds, and such.

gmblfdz
November 11th, 2008, 02:58 PM
I know this is meant to be environments but can characters or creatures be implemented to provide the pictures with extra depth? eg, the cyclops in The Odyssey, or will his cave merely suffice?

Or to put it another way, are we simply creating the environments in which these stories take place or the actual snapshot of events that take place within the epic tale?

iwantjelly
November 11th, 2008, 03:25 PM
This is a veeeery exciting challenge, and i'm absolutely definitely in.

I'd like to choose the most epic story of Randolph Carter, The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath by H.P. Lovecraft.

Is it approved ?

chaosrocks
November 11th, 2008, 03:33 PM
thats a yes on Song of Ice and Fire
and a yes ion the hitchikers guide
TASmith Im afraid thats a no on your own writing, as yet mostly unwritten, sorry has to be already written, and in fact something that ive at least heard of. don't let me stop you from doing them though. sounds really interesting. love to see it. just not for this.
yes on Lovecraft..cthulu is on the list... the others are fine too

you can put in figures. if they are an integral part of the Environment, butthe image should no be about the cyclops, more about the cave and island he lives on. K/

adding to list
King Solomons mines
I claudius (roman imperium)
various works of robert Loius Stevenson, black Arrow, Kidnapped, Treasure island

Oh!!! I think I'm in (although I might get super busy at work...). Could we get a bigger deadline? 3 Weeks is kinda short to get familiar with a topic and produce 5 mood pieces...

If we choose Burrough's "Mars" as the topic, which of the books would be recommended? I've found some of his firsts book in public domain as audio books.

Cheers! Can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with :D

iwantjelly
November 11th, 2008, 03:48 PM
Great ! I'm on Lovecraft's "dream-quest of unknown Kadath" then.

For those who would like to do Cthulu or other parts of the "ancient demonic" part of Lovecraft's work, you won't do the same subject as me because Randolph Carter's story is very different from Cthulu, Azathoth and Nyarlathothep oriented novels : it's more a dreamy, fantastic mood than the gritty horror we all know Lovecraft for. That's why this book is my favorite, and why i'm chosing it.

This EOW will be grand. Thanks for such a good, open subject Chaosrocks !

I rather assumed there would be somethign on this list with which your are already familiar. And hopefully this will give people a chance to illustrate that literature with which they are already in love.

for the mars books, they are a quick read, Princess of mars is by far the most important.

"John Carter" or "At the Mountains of Madness". Carter or Madness, Carter or Madness.......... damn...

Basically one would be red paintings, the other white.

Great topic by the way. Nice to see some "practical application" filter in here...

Damnit...

Roxie, I'd like to do Stephen King's "The Talisman" and "Black House", please advise if it is approved.

Thanks!

EDIT: If not, I'd go for the Gunslinger series...also by King

EDIT PART DUEX: Just thinking of other suggestions from my youth...

The Shannara World from several different series by Terry Brooks
The Xanth novels by Piers Anthony
Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander (The Black Cauldron, et al)

EDIT X3: after further discussion: The Dark Tower Series will be my entry.

Fine Chaos, just saying you might be turning off some of the working people from participating as 3 weeks is a pretty tight schedule if you are trying to meet deadlines at work.

I think it's more fun to pick something you are not familiar with as a topic, getting out of comfort zone is very healthy ;).

3 weeks is ages

Negatory. Obviously you read a lot, but the last novel I read was in highschool. In short, I don't read very fast. Add to that full-time work and 3 weeks becomes more like 6 days. It would probably take me 3 days to read a novel in the first place. That leaves 3 days for 5 pieces + design.

Perhaps we can we opt to do a movie as a last resort? Movies are narratives...

Also, who's judging this? A well-read soul, I assume.

Corrick
November 11th, 2008, 07:39 PM
Things are never simple around here.

Typical audio books (and don't hassle me about what typical means) will run anywhere from 6 to 14 hours, depending on the book and if it's abridged or unabridged.

Since it's a lot harder to fast forward to an exact time than it is to turn a page, I'd suggest either Cliff's Notes or Wikipedia for the basic story plot, and check the actual book out from the library if you want to get into the details. Bear in mind that you will straight-up ruin any chance of enjoying the story if you haven't read it already and Wiki it, but since it sounds like there aren't many readers in here, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I'm going with "At the Mountains of Madness". Epic Antarctica.

Fantasy based, much like Lord of the Rings, it's been a while since I read, but even within the first few books there are some great scenes that I can remember, which would make for great paintings.

yes on the black company
yes on maupassant
no movies. cliff notes at the very worst resort. i didn't think you'd actuall hav eto tread the book first. the book on tape idea is a good one.

three weeks becasue around here, that about the amount of attention span people have.

yes on Hyperion

yes on mountains of madness

wow never heard of that one Arttourney. but yes it sounds cool

ok you can have Wheel of time. the books kinda sucked and were pretty crappily written.. but the had a great publicity machine and were in essence epic

in case you haven't noticed... yes I read persistantly and omniverously.

Norse Mythology ok I guess although I would prefer the hero saga Ie die nebulungen lied
Aren't they up there? the whole of the mytholgy is epic, but not particularly narrative

I would accept the Hobbit, or the Sillmarillion. or even LOTR itself but youd have to talk me into it

But, by all means, I will try to chunk something out.

Can i do disk world (one of your topics)?
and can it be any world thats disk shaped, or is it a known topic which I dont know about?*

*edit: I see now... it has to be literature based...
I think ill take on Little red riding hood (or other fairy tales?), if not, how about Tom Sawyer?

arttorney
November 12th, 2008, 10:03 AM
A variant on the science fiction ringworlds and disk worlds is the series John Varley set on hollow donut world that was itself a living creature on a vast scale called Gaiea. The characters went there in the first book in a ship called the Ringmaster. That should be enough for you to google it. An interesting read with a lot of intense scenery. The second book was called Wizard, I remember, and also quite good.

chaosrocks
November 12th, 2008, 10:16 AM
brewin- the disk world in question is Terry Pratchett, which if you haven't read , you are in for a treat.
-I have already approved Larry Niven's ring world, could do Varley too. so it does need to be a specific epic novel or series, or histrorical traditioal saga that you are working from, not just random ideas that you are making up the world for.

Im not accepting Fairy Tales, Its a fine line but they really aren't sufficiently epic. except the fairy of Dawn, which is a saga. and has enough scope for different scenes.

Interesting topic, Chaos, and I apologize for adding more "literature" to the list. I'll not particpate, but it did get me thinking about Patrick O'Bryan's Aubrey/Martin Series (Master and Commander), C.S Forester's Horatio Hornblower, and airplane literature David Weber's Honor Harrington Series (aka Horatio Hornblower in space).

Whoa, great idea!
But i agree about the tight deadline... especially because i´ve gotta finish other pieces i haven´t even started yet before i can get hands on this round.... but i´d love to!!

So, if even already visualized literature like HP and Never Ending Story is accepted, then i guess it´s okay if i´d pick Ken Follett´s "Pillars of Earth" / "World Without End" or Noah Gordon´s "The Medicus"?
And what about biblical storys like about Troy or other unvisualized ones? Hercules is okay too, sooo.....

I'd like to have a bit of fun with this if I can join in, so I'll request my old junior high favorite (and it's also on your list): the Pern series by Anne McCaffrey.

It's been about 20 odd years (ack!) since I've read most of the books, but I still have some fond memories of it all; and I'm a fast reader so no problem re-reading for descriptions and so on. Guess that means a quick visit to the used bookstore...heh.

Chaotic Knight, ender's games a go

Vyse- Follett's Pillar's are fine, as are biblical scenes adn Troy.(the illiad is on the list actually, as is Moses, but one could also do other Biblical sagas. David comes to mind. ). Hercules too ... im leaning more towards the Hero sagas rather than the god mythologies as you've probably already foigured out

Hello i would like to do my piece based on a series of books by one of the leading Russian fantasy authors (Nick Perumov)
He recently moved to the states so now his site is also in English (although terribly translated) so if you would like to find out what my piece is going to be based on go here http://www.perumov.com/eng/books.shtml and then scroll down to the chronicles of the breaking where you will find a short summary of every set of books (overall there are 14 books in this series). These books have been a great inspiration to me and one of the reasons I started to draw =)

Maybe since as per the instructions for this particular Epic EOW 100, we aren't required to post a text description for what we create, the title we make up (text title? design? logo?) of the RPG we're creating the 5 environments for is very important?

Hey I gotta speak up about you trashing the Wheel of Time but letting RA Salvatore through without remand haha.
Also just to try to help someone else out, would a specific epic from the dragonlance setting be ok? Just saying seeing as you let the Drizzt Saga through which is just a series from the Forgotten Realms setting.
All that said I dont want to do any of those things. I was thinking either Bryce Courtenay's The Power of One or Yann Martell's Life of Pi. Life of Pi would be tough to come up with locations as most of it takes place on a lifeboat but I think enough are certainly there.
I might take on Hitchhiker's guide if everyone else abandoned it as well.

I saw that Dubious, thanks for being so kind and pointing that out, I was looking for another one, so I am going to do the "Volsunga saga"; The Völsunga saga is a legendary saga, a late 13th century Icelandic prose rendition of the origin and decline of the Volsung clan. TobbA-- wheel of time is approved.. (ugh)

Rob yeha you saw the note on the popol vuh.. I must look that up

Robmorphin Volsunga saga is fine

Ilaekae. yes thats the one, I have a first edition. and yes dear Dragons can definately be integral environmental elements

Vulgar good suggestions, some of which are already on the list. not sure Macbeth is really that epic though, nor is sleepy hollow.

Mishkin275 _ great idea. I adore 100 years of solitude. you can have Ovid if you like but I think its less visually vivid (personal preference again)

chaosrocks thanks for the reply....so this challenge is not the usual concept, design and paint an environment? I did this image today...is it not on the right track? as I was just going to go and paint it? Am i meant to be laying it out in a certain way? This is the only one that was set at this angle because of the location...the others will be straight-layed out environments...flower bed environment, rabbits house, tea party etc etc etc. I have seen some environment designs for the LOST RPG and using them as a guide...http://www.nuro-art.com/

btw...there are so many posts on here about book choices...I wouldnt even dare to suggest Twilight as I think I may get a boot in my face as it not really epic...but THAT would be an awesome game :D

Oh gods.. this is such a great idea for EOW100... My heart leapt at the idea of tackling the weird and wonderful world of Gormenghast, I absolutely adored the first two novels, Tidus Groan went off on too weird a tangent for me though.

Though on thinking, I finished Count of Monte Cristo a couple of weeks ago, and would love to tackle some of the grandeur the environments in that book would have. Would that count as epic, Chaos?

And an extra week would be just the incentive I'd need to tear myself away from the CGTalk Steampunk challenge for a little while and try this out instead.

I own a copy of Song of Roland and gave it serious thought, but I find the prospect of drawing a thousand mounted armored guys with spears a rather daunting challenge. Most of the environments are either that, or a thousand dead armored guys lying around with gore. There is the court of the moorish king and the court of Charlemagne but then after that we're back to all those dudes and horses. It's intimidating. I might try it now, just out of cussedness, but damn!!!

Here's an epic for approval:

The Great War of Ancient Egypt

You've never heard of it?
Here's an overview:
The Upper and Lower Kingdoms of Egypt are on the brink of war. Peace has existed between the two peoples for over a thousand years based on trade and shared honoring of the sacred river Nile. But in the temple stronghold of Karnak, a new power has emerged. The daughter of a local fisherman, named Ra Ta, calling herself Isis Amuntek (daughter of Isis) has captured the devotion of thousands, claiming a direct lineage from the God and speaking of horrible catastrophes seen in visions unless Egypt is united under her banner. The established King of Upper Egypt and of the holy stronghold of Luxor, Annead Aud, escaped during her uprising to the safety of allies in Lower Egypt, where Isis Amuntek's forces hold less sway. Through a treaty with Tefnut Amun, existing lord of Lower Egypt in the coastal stronghold of Tanis, Annead Aud amassed an enormous army to wage the first war between Upper and Lower Egypt in more than a thousand years.

Will it fly? I really want to try to do ancient Egyptian scenery.
Thanks.

It's gotta be Earthsea for me, it's the one thing on the list that really jumps out at me, and I know well enough to do justice to. Now I just have to narrow it down to 5 locations - I guess I'll do multiples of the big, obvious locations, such as the School of Roke, but there's stuff it's going to be hard to choose between.

I'm kinda surprised that no one has picked Naomi Novik's Temeraire series yet, with its "what if" take on the epic Napoleonic Wars by dragon interference. I mean, Peter Jackson has even optioned all of her books now for movie development (he just bought the options for her last two books per the publishing newsletter I got earlier this week). Doesn't mean that they will actually become movies, but you never know. :)

http://www.temeraire.org/

Actually, chaos, I know I suck at enviros but maybe I can pump something out for this one. I love love love the Temeraire books... But if I can't take those, could I take the His Dark Materials Trilogy by Phillip Pullman?

Actually, damn, or maybe I could do the Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix?

Does Horatio Hornblower count as epic? There are 11 books...

Ahm, chaos, could I play around with all these for a couple days and see which one I find is easier to work with?

I think a couple folks are already doing dark materials, not that that should stop you. Hornblower is assuredly epic, as is Patrick o"brien

I really don't know if I manage to take part in this EoW but I'd really like to.
I love Lovecraft's works but I already used them as base for the DEEP contest. What about the Gospel? Should I stay true to time and setting or can I make it more fancy (e.g. a post-apocalyptic Gospel or something like God of War version of ancient Greece)?

Yes, I meant the New Testament. I thought that simply "the Gospel" was enough. The downside of living in a country with only ONE religion is that one assumes that every reference to THE religion is obvious...
(for the record I'm not a big fan of it, the last time I read the New Testament was fifteen years ago. But I think it could be interesting to add a twist to the usual iconography...)

Hey Chaos, I'm thinking of throwing my hat in the ring. If anything I'd like to do George R.R. Martin's Song of Fire and Ice, specifically Game of Thrones. I didn't know, can we do a different image for each different place or did it have to be 5 images of one particular location in the entire epic?

Also, I'm torn with Game of Thrones and The Wheel of Time.... anyways, what do you think Chaos?

ive got Dantes divine comedy sat on my shelf as a fail safe, but ive got into a new book called 'eve:the emperean age'.. full of imagery.. sci-fi stuff etc, which would be a laugh to illustrate. so any chance of that one? not sure if classes in the same league as some of the ones mentioned, but worth a shot?

either that or 'The hungry Catapiller' :P

Quick question regarding presentation, chaos. You mentioned that consideration for target audience will be a criteria that the judges will be using. How should we explain this aspect? I'm tempted to draw up a briefing document outlining the plot, target audience, USPs and a vague outline of gameplay, host it externally and allow people to download it for reference, but is that a bit mad?

There's no way I'm showing the art without a brief blurb about its relevance as a game environment and how ideas for gameplay mechanics influenced the choice of location, stuff like 'this would serve as the game's first hub for quests'.

Heh, I've already made my own brief with gameplay scenarios just to help narrow down my preferred environment selections from my "Epic", and to help me decide who my possible target audiences are. I figured on posting bits of the brief once I started posting progress sketches here and in my CA sketchbook thread (particularly since I've been rather bad about updating that this past year).

Maybe we could post something like a "treatment" just to introduce the final art at the end, Chaos? Like the blurb on the back of the gamebox. :)

feel free to do this for your own edification but remember that this is a concept art challenge. the design aspect and the audience aspect should be represented visually and they included as a method of making your 5 pieces cohesive. the judges are not goingto read long explaination of game play, neither is an AD. that which is being communicated should be communicated visually. each Environment should need no more than a label.
ie : whole design , all five labeled "Thomas Mallory, Le Morte d Artur" individual scene labeled "camelot" end of writing, and this should be included with in the design scenario. Think like and Artist, not like a game designer, would be my recommendation.

I have also been asked if one of the five environment images can be a map. I will accept that with the caveat that maps are much more design oriented and will be judged on a higher design standard. and it better be integrated into the design aesthetic seamlessly. (yes some of these are big Art school type words... learn them, if you don't already know them. and I am generally on IRC and can be tracked down for question and discussion fairly easily BUT if you are inclined to argue ... be assured. i will listen, but i am AD..another lesson to learn in a slightly more friendly setting than the real world)

the idea is to illustrate 5 environments from the book, not one place five time (why would you do that?)

Well, in the Wheel of Time, Tar Valon is a location filled with plenty of opportunities. A shot from the river of the White Tower, the streets of Tar Valon, the Amrylin Seat's study, The Accepted's Quarters, The Kitchens, The Warder's Training grounds, where the Black Sisters meet. Lots of places. Also, it's not unheard of to do multiple images of a particular location for film. Sometimes just one image isn't enough. So for me, it's easy to take the assignment to mean one location in a particular story.

BUT if those 2 are off the table, then I'll think of some others. Thanks for the heads up Chaos!

"A shot from the river of the White Tower, the streets of Tar Valon, the Amrylin Seat's study, The Accepted's Quarters, The Kitchens, The Warder's Training grounds, where the Black Sisters meet."

THAT IS SEVEN DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS
each VISUAL IMAGE IS Different
what aren't you iunderstanding
????

I mean
five different views of the white tower, would be..perhaps nessisary in film.. but not in concepting but that isn't even close to what Im asking for

five different features of the same city? sure

I think it may be useful for those who are worrying about deadline or have problems with bizarre perspectives (Hideyoshi ;)) - I've found that Google SketchUp is great for 3D sketches - you can do a lot of things. The interface is riduculously intuitive, zooming tools are great - you can walk on platform or look around just like a human - that's perfect for us. You can also edit shadows or disable them and make edges sketchy, like as I've done. Also, you can set the third perspective distortion like as you want (though it's better not to overdo):

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v613/Cinot/concept_art/eow100_epic/sektchup_test.jpg

It's free - for more info, look there: http://sketchup.google.com/

At this moment I'm reading The Star Diares. After reading the first chapter, I knew it was a good choice - ideas made me blew away. And I can't forget to mention about author's specific humour sense :P

By the way, 21 days (3 weeks) has remained! :P Reading the whole book and doing the idea/creativity stage will take 7-11 days, in the rest days I'm going to draw those 5 works that will show different places from book.

Had a change of heart (after starting some thumbnails)—how's Peter Hamilton's 'Night's Dawn' trilogy? There's a ridiculous number and variety of settings, so would you suggest it's better to keep them more closely related (ie. from one story-arc) or would I be right in guessing it's up to us to bring a coherent sense of style to a variety of environments...?

Perhaps, for the sake of clarity and more questions, you could edit the first post with a list of names and books that are approved.

That way you'll have a better oversight of who does what (and what you/the jury will have to look up), and people can easily look up what already is approved. Perhaps will also tease some people to do some unique books/less popular ones.

Hello all, sounds like a fab EOW, so I should jump in and give it a shot.

I'm thinking the Bas-Lag novels by China Mieville (Perdidio St Station, Scar, Iron Council). Is that appropriate, Chaosrocks?

If not, how's The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe?

whoops, I am not the only one with Neverending Story? Sorry, didn't know...
Thanks for the listing, tatiana!

anyway, here's my first piece - trying to do some of the environments from the 2nd half of the book which was NOT in the movie. Well, not in the first movie at least. I haven't seen the sequels (which are said to be very crappy)

This is the 'House of Change':

You did catch the mood nicely - a night, cold winter. And those lovely sketchy brushstrokes :) I think it would look better if you "add chaos" to area in front of person. Perhaps frozen river with destroyed bridge or something.

Today or tomorrow I will finish the book and start the sektching/brainstorm stage. Man, I didn't painted for so long time.. I can't wait to paint those 5 works :D

Well, I'm doing Dune, even tho there isn't that much freedom to explore. Desert planet, and that's it. ;P But I'll try to do something. I haven't seen the movie so this will be interesting.

Finished my research/sketches and ready to start painting!

Choosing to work from short stories was a good idea as i read slowly. The only epic I've read on the list was The Illiad and that only has one location (even if you divide it into Troy/Gates of Troy/River/Boats/Camp/Temple it's all one dusty place). And even though it was my first time reading Lovecraft I've researched the mythos in the past. Here's what I've decided upon, if there's any fans of Lovecraft feedback on my choices is welcome.

Cthulhu Cycle:
-R'lyeh
-The Mountains of Madness (Or Leng?)
-Insmouth
-The Burial Chamber of Abdul Alhazred (Derleth, but based Lovecraft's description of the Nameless City)
-Arkham Asylum

Depending on how I go I'd like to do a few more and round it out as a series of works. But this is my first attempt at landscapes so we'll see.

Oh, come on kenjitsu, give it a shot. I've got Antarctica to work with, and I'm excited. Besides, like she said, there's a lot more to Dune than just sand. Research!

Sunny Koda, looking forward to seeing what you got going on there... :)

I'm still doing some reading of various stories in the Dragonriders of Pern books, but I did go ahead and do some quick rough sketches (thumbnails really) of my impressions of three of the environments I'm probably doing for my "Pern Epic" concepts:
* Benden Weyr
* The Southern Continent - The Mountain
* DragonStones Cove

I'm thinking I might do interior shots for the remaining two...maybe. :)

The major problem with your works is that nothing happens there. Where are people? Monsters? Robots? Bird or S-F ships? What they do? Also, those landscape are possible to see in our real world, so try to add untypical elements, making the works more interesting. Using various perspectives can help a lot. Frog, fish, human, you might consider using them (though the fish perspective is pretty tricky). Just don't stick to only one :P The bird perspective that you used, can be interesting, but because of it's nature, the horizon is placed highly, so you have a lot of land space. It can give benefits if only you can "fill the land space", otherwise it may kill you! :P

Acutally I came there to ask if inferior environments (laboratory, for example) are accepted. I couldn't find about it in EOW's rules, nor remember if there were EOW challenges with interior works.

Haven't added those in just yet, but I will definitely do so to help give some context to the environments.

Good points, thanks! I'll keep working away at some different views of these key scenes.

I found it helpful to check out the EOW stickies to see some samples of winning entries from past challenges, and "inferior" environments aren't winners, but a few of the good ones have been "interior" environment scenes. ;)

Why does this epic topic have to be exactly during those weeks i have to learn for exams...? Damn... if it had been a few weeks earlier T__T
It´s not that i have absolutely no time to paint whatsoever, i just don´t have enough time for 5 elaborate pieces.... sooorry!

I would have liked to take part so badly.... maybe chances are better on eow#200. Till then, i´ll wait and watch all your fantastic entries now =)

Here's my fourth environment thumbnail sketch: Pern's Half-Circle Sea Hold.

I've already got some changes in mind for the layout to improve the view of the Docking Cavern and maybe give a bit more of a look at the interior of the Hall through the open doors. As with the others, I will still be adding people (more than what is barely seen through the doors) and some more of the fishing fleet to provide better overall scale info and context when I go to color with the final layout.

Vulgar`
November 29th, 2008, 12:43 AM
Nice structure, tatiana, a suggestion would be maybe you could have a stone sculpture adorning the top of the entrance, and also you might want to make the ship bigger for scale or have the tip of another making it's way into the port.

This activity is not only a great idea but it'll most likely spawn the next 10 topics for the EOW.

Am I too late to join? I am working on a comic book story and I really need to kick my own butt, and get more done, quicker.

The story takes our main character (young female) to a magic world, where she must confront her biggest fears and darkest secrets. This magic world has several environments: The Forest, The Sea, The world of Darkness, The world of Light, and her own starting point, every time she enters this world: Her own magic home/house, that alters after every big battle. That would make 5 scenes.

I can't promise to finish, but I'm a noob, so it's not like I'd be a big competitor anyway. Is it all right if I join in? I know it's very late.

DauDau: sure you can still enter! Just choose an epic story and off you go, painting your 5 environment pieces. :) I think you need to choose an existing novel over your own story though. Check the list by chaosrocks on page 1 for example.

Tonic: thanks! I tried to stick to the description a little, so there's no frozen lake :P

Beautiful image Hideyoshi!........love that warm light hitting the top of the mountain, as well those wisps of blowing snow. Those little things like the wisps really help to sell the image and give you that impression of it being cold.

Finally, I finished book. I did take notes during reading, so I have already a list of places that can be illustrated. At this moment, I'm choosing places and thinking how to paint them. Just for fun, I did a sketch of world, where people think they can live under water, but in reality they can't :P

Oh Em. Gee... wow, this is so awesome. I wish I could participate, but it looks like I'd be coming in a bit late.

As for me, I'd choose either Magician by Raymond E. Feist or Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis. Great, great books, and to my knowledge they haven't been illustrated... well... anywhere! My knowledge is limited, however. Maybe I'll just have to do my own tribute to them outside of the competition =)

Good luck everyone! The images are coming along great! I especially like the Pern ones, I get the feeling I've seen them before... which probably means that the description in the book was detailed enough that I imagined the same thing! I can't wait to see the final pieces.

still WIP :
this is the description of this part : when lord Ram finds out that her beloved Sita was abducted by ravana in lanka , he needed to cross the ocean to get to lanka and was about to shoot his magical arrows at the ocean which would dry it out . but thats when the ocean god apeared , volcanoes errupted , there was tension in the forests , birds flew , sun was setting making the sea appear angry like molten lava ...

so only the right part of the piece is left to detail etc. will add a foresty look to those hills in the back ground and some finishing will be required . would appreciate some feedback ....

specially about the colors and if changing the colors worked well or not ??
cheers !!
