October 20th, 2008, 05:38 PM
Sounds like the Argonath of LOTR, but flanking a road instead of a river...
October 20th, 2008, 06:11 PM
uhmmm.... it may be my faulty english.. but I don't understand the theme
October 20th, 2008, 06:44 PM
A marker is an indicator such a sign or a plaque.

Hi, I have a few questions:
Is two just the minimum, May we Include more than two ? or is part of the challenge meant to be composing 2 objects ?
And what's a moors ?
October 21st, 2008, 12:15 AM
moors are a landscape basically without trees ad usually covered with gorse heather and or bracken.
two promenant I supoose others off in the distance would be ok, but yes part of it is the 2 object compositional challenge
October 21st, 2008, 03:25 AM
This sounds really interesting!. A lot of possibilities with this one.
October 21st, 2008, 12:38 PM
here's my WIP. I missed the part about the Moors so it looks sorta like the alps... could be the moors
October 21st, 2008, 01:35 PM
Oooh that wip reminds me of the beacons in Return of the King. I so totally suck at landscape painting, but I love looking at the work y'all do =)
Look forward to seeing the results of this comp!
October 21st, 2008, 04:29 PM
Sorry Chaosrocks. There was the old topic listed in the description when I asked. Now it's chrystal clear.
Mishkin275: Looking great
October 21st, 2008, 05:44 PM
mishkin.. as cool as your painting is.... Moors is part of the brief.
October 21st, 2008, 11:07 PM
I've never participated in an EoW, but I've been playing with environment concepts lately, so I thought it would be good for me to give one a try.
My take on the topic.
October 22nd, 2008, 02:05 AM
that's what I've got so far.I think it is a pretty hard topic.
October 22nd, 2008, 01:16 PM
My quick concept...
October 22nd, 2008, 04:44 PM
The markers are going in last; but I know where they're going and what they'll look like....
October 23rd, 2008, 07:36 AM
Here's value block in. Blech. :dead: Not working for me yet...
October 23rd, 2008, 09:16 AM
Excellent, open topic. Very inspiring.
October 23rd, 2008, 12:50 PM
Dont be afraid to go big and/or put some detail into those "large navigational markers" ^_^ . and I did some research, a moor: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Moor, maybe some rotting trees, heh. Hopefully I'll have a chance to do a few more sketches and maybe I'll come up with something decent and toss a couple on here later.
Some great starts, can;t wait to see where all of these go. ack my alarmclock is ringing gots to shut it off. seeya.
October 23rd, 2008, 01:33 PM
I've never done any of the EOW, but i've been doing some landscape painting recently and thought I could play around and get some cc from yall more experienced peeps by participating.
October 23rd, 2008, 03:07 PM
sort of sketchy
October 23rd, 2008, 03:13 PM
Here is my progress so far. I love looking at everyones interpretation.
October 23rd, 2008, 07:18 PM
Moors in all weathers. Hope it helps.....
October 23rd, 2008, 09:02 PM
hi there all !!
first post on CA! wowowo !
ok i'll begin with a quick value sketch done late at night.
the path to the temple.....
waiting for crits
see ya, yeah !
October 24th, 2008, 04:10 AM
Ok here is my finished one, seeing as this is my first EOW please can you tell me if I have posted this wrong etc.
October 24th, 2008, 08:03 AM
i think that should be fine. you will just need to move it to the "final burning" thread as soon as I make one.
Im a little leary of reposting deviant links but if it works here it should work there. good job.
October 24th, 2008, 11:43 AM
hi, i wonder if we can show where the path is leading, or it should stay completely hidden
October 24th, 2008, 02:11 PM
Hi everyone. :)
Er, I think I still haven't quite understood what a moor is. :S Is it a swampy area or one with lots of grass .. or both?
Anyway. I googled for reference and I hope this fits with the brief now. I started doing an underwater gate but I figure that's wrong. :sadcheerleader:
So, this is it. i should maybe rotate one of the obelisks a bit more so that it's facing us. I hope I can finish. I'll try!!
October 24th, 2008, 03:06 PM
For those who still need clarification on what a moor is, think of the desolate, rock covered fields of backyard Europe. Very barren landscape. Not much life other than a little brush and moss, but use your imagination.
October 24th, 2008, 04:11 PM
Here is my final so far. I might go back in and do some revisions once I step away from it for a while. Hope everyone enjoys.

Concept : "Walk till you see a golden lion,Your life will grow so bright" : anonymous log file
This is my WIP :D
October 25th, 2008, 04:11 AM
Braden: Great work. Nice composition, good lighting and great mood. Keep it up.
Otta: I think you should pull the camera back quite a bit. To really help get a feel for the space. Right now it feels too tight on the subject. Unless the subject is really really really big. Which in that case you need something to give the viewer a sense of scale.
Here's my WIP. I'm not really sure where to take it from here. Does it work? Should I try again? What do you think?
October 25th, 2008, 05:37 AM
otta, your value scheme doesnt really help to get depth, and the building and lion are on the same line...... push a bit the building or bring the lion closer to camera to get more contrast
remember values in backgroubd should be whiter and less satureted, keep strongest and weakest value for the fore ground, keep it on !
corspufo, nice composition, clearly leading the eyes.
However colors are way too saturated in my eyes, and lacks a bit of variations.
Also maybe the bushes on the left sides are too repetitive, i mean exactly same volume and silouhettes, maybe you can give some more randomness.
October 25th, 2008, 06:20 AM
Thanks for crits ,Pal! I'll fix it :)
October 25th, 2008, 07:53 AM
Finally, an environment where it pays to be british ;_;.
WIP is barely worth showing since i still haven't decided on what my markers will be ( though i have a rough idea ) so things will probably change drastically from here in. But in terms of mood and colour, this is what ill be going for :)
October 25th, 2008, 08:13 AM
otta. nice markers
but theres no Moor
folks I know you are having alittle trouble getting all the elements in. But they are in the brief. Im gonna have to be a bit of a hardass about this. you've been given a bunch of clarification, and a bunch of ref.
this is what it says... define each word separately if you need to
Two ancient markers.
Jutting out from the moors, two large navigational markers on the path that hints to what lies beyond
October 25th, 2008, 08:55 AM
I sketched the first thing passing through my mind... not very orginal I know.
October 25th, 2008, 10:53 AM
it would help if people would precise how much time they spend , even for each step they present.
October 25th, 2008, 11:28 AM
October 25th, 2008, 12:31 PM
here is my last wip...going slowly :/
i got quite a clear idea of the direction the frame is following
i'm trying to clearly separate each step of te process so i*ll learn a max
thats why im so slow
and i'm still addicted to crazy colors....
October 25th, 2008, 03:20 PM
Ugh! I wish I was better at digital.......
Still a wip..... in Gimp
Stephen O Connor
October 25th, 2008, 05:05 PM
This is my first ever post on CA...!
Here is my Two Ancient markers on the Moors...
October 25th, 2008, 05:09 PM
Been working on this thing for way too long already :(
I need some more experience with doing environments I guess. I hope I have enough time to get this anywhere near a finished stage, because right now it even lacks the actual markers yet...
October 25th, 2008, 07:25 PM
Ok, I've never participated in any of these forum activities before. This is not quite finished yet, but I'd appreciate some crits. I have to say I hate painting grass. Don't really know how to make it look good
October 25th, 2008, 08:23 PM
I'm having creative block recently and its really starting to do my head in. Nothing i do seems to turn out right. I've wasted so much time today trying to figure out some markers and nothing works, i've even somehow forgotten how to paint, which is like..the most frustrating thing ever. Part of this is because i didnt really plan this out beforehand, but damn, i have a vivid image pictured in my mind of what i want this to be but my hands are just not cooperating with me.
I'll probably give this eow up if im like this again tomorrow, i dont want to waste another day making myself frustrated over nothing D:.
Pumpkin- nice grass :). I really like the footprints and the subtle marker too, gj. One thing id moan about is that the skeleton doesnt really look convincing, it doesnt really look floppy and slumped enough to have been hanging out there long enough to decay.
October 25th, 2008, 08:39 PM
Noooo! ALH! Reminds me a little of Otterburn; or Robroyston moors......
October 26th, 2008, 02:42 AM
this is a 2.5 by 3.5 inch artists trading card
probably not going in the poll
October 26th, 2008, 06:24 AM
Ooh, I like moors. I never realised how much I took them for granted though.
Braden M - love the light path.
ALH - keep at it, reminds me of Cornwall - derelict tin mines etc.
Tsujni - beautiful light
Pumpkin - I agree with ALH, great grass, the tree sits a little awkwardly for me though.
Here's my attempt:
and thumbnail hopefully:
October 26th, 2008, 01:41 PM
corspufo and pootle-thanks for the comments. I think I need to work on the spacial relationships of the foreground, middleground and background a little bit, but i think this will do for now.
Pootle-very nice composition and color. I could see this painting going really far. I would just add a little interest to the middle ground with some rocks or something.
yoitisi- great start to your painting. Just a little work to the sky would make this a killer piece.
Son of a bitch. Is this 98? I put 99 on mine. Oh well.
Nice paintings everyone.
October 26th, 2008, 04:21 PM
Just a thumbnail I've been playing with. I think I'm going to change almost everything other than the color scheme. I'm trying to avoid anything that goes along with what others are doing (just to force myself to come up with new ideas), so I think I'll change both the markers and the composition.
October 26th, 2008, 06:07 PM
Newer, much less saturated and toned down idea~
Edit: Further update~
October 26th, 2008, 06:15 PM
Finally got into the swing of things. The markers are kinda small and in the distance, not really as much a focal point as they should be for the brief, but theres still work to be done here yet.
October 26th, 2008, 11:28 PM
October 27th, 2008, 04:12 AM
I need to do this more often
October 27th, 2008, 06:43 AM
October 27th, 2008, 10:20 AM
Gaius: Wowowow. The color contrast in that is stunning, and the lighting and detail on the lions is absolutely gorgeous.
October 27th, 2008, 10:34 AM
was just thinking about making this my first EOW but......
gaius.....you sunuva........AMAZING friggin pic
i love it!

MOTHER F&^%ER!!! Its not uploading the right image!!!! iTS THE SAME AS THE LAST 2!!!AAAARRRRGGGGGG!!!!!
October 27th, 2008, 01:35 PM
Whatever is down there, its sure making the birds freak out..
I feel guilty for abusing brushes so much for this, but i didnt want to spend too much time on it :). Pretty much finished now.
EDIT: i lied. I did more. Im still not sure of the sexed up colours, they work yet not, i have a bit of a habit of being scared of contrast so perhaps a darker version is good for me to keep and not fiddle with any longer. It nukes some of the subtle colours from the original, but does help this look more like an old classic landscape, which is what i was aiming for in the first place :).
The birds are less subtle now too. Instead of mixing up the brushes like i should have i kept it at one, which does make them rather odd looking- but that is kinda the point, something is not right over there.
October 27th, 2008, 01:50 PM
pretty amazing Gaius
October 27th, 2008, 02:08 PM
hello gaius dear...way to ramp up the competition :P
Braden, change the title. before you try to upload or it will think its the old file. when you get the new one up Ill deletee the duplicate posts
go trevor go!!!! you can do it
October 27th, 2008, 02:24 PM
just a lunch time WIP
im probably only going to be doing about 30-40 mins a day if i eat really fast
but i want to keep this painterly ( i hope) so maybe ill try and finish it in 1 or 2 more sessions
October 27th, 2008, 02:51 PM
braden m - thanks for your comments (updated with texture was a bit scared to do more!)
ALH - cool foliage/brushy trees
gaius - wow that's beautiful
trevor - really looking forward to seeing how yours goes, especially with the painterly approach.....also admiring your dedication...snack at 3?
October 27th, 2008, 03:34 PM
deadline's aproching !
October 27th, 2008, 10:01 PM
Ok, this is it for me. I added some more lighting and adjusted the size and shapes of the pillars to make it a bit more dramatic. Hope everyone enjoys. I only wish it was a little larger. Photobucket doesn't seem to want to import anything larger. I don't use photobucket anymore anyway, only for this. http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m80/braden_05/EOW098_BRADEN.jpg
October 27th, 2008, 10:03 PM
Really wonderful work everyone. Can't wait till the next one.
October 27th, 2008, 10:11 PM
Gaius : Very Awesome man! :)
This is my last WIP. :)
October 27th, 2008, 11:25 PM
Great work everyone. Here's mine. BTW,Gaius, your work just stunning, almost makes me get cold feet on mine :)
October 27th, 2008, 11:35 PM
braden m: you shouldn't have to use photobucket, try using the attachment manager here. When you post a message, you can select advanced mode, which will let you use the attachment manager to upload images.
The only time you should need an outside host is for the final burning thread - your thumbnails must be outside hosted. You main image can be uploaded here.
October 28th, 2008, 04:26 AM
Gaius -STUNNING. :D
October 28th, 2008, 06:13 AM
October 28th, 2008, 08:31 AM
October 28th, 2008, 02:03 PM
orim- you will need to move this to the final burning thread and ad an icon, as soon as I post a final burning thread which I havent done yet
as it is I will not take it to poll as it is missing one of the required elements. gonna be a little picky about that this time since I believe they are quite clearly stated
welcome back ATAnderson you've been missed
October 28th, 2008, 07:43 PM
October 28th, 2008, 08:49 PM
the final burning thread is up. move em over folks.
be sure you have all three elements
don't forget the icon, outside hosted please
you know the routine
and thanks these arelooking great!!!
one more in between then we get MIghty EOW100!!!!!!
October 29th, 2008, 11:53 AM
why 3 elements ? the image + icon = 2 elements !!!
October 29th, 2008, 01:02 PM
the image it'self has 3 required elements
1. 2 markers
October 29th, 2008, 07:56 PM
can i just say that I went and had a look in the final burning thread...and the entries are just FABULOUS!!!
I would of loved to do this...but not able to...but the quality and imagination is great.
