Hi, I have a few questions:
Is two just the minimum, May we Include more than two ? or is part of the challenge meant to be composing 2 objects ?
And what's a moors ?
thanks
chaosrocks
October 21st, 2008, 12:15 AM
moors are a landscape basically without trees ad usually covered with gorse heather and or bracken.
two promenant I supoose others off in the distance would be ok, but yes part of it is the 2 object compositional challenge

Dont be afraid to go big and/or put some detail into those "large navigational markers" ^_^ . and I did some research, a moor: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Moor, maybe some rotting trees, heh. Hopefully I'll have a chance to do a few more sketches and maybe I'll come up with something decent and toss a couple on here later.
Some great starts, can;t wait to see where all of these go. ack my alarmclock is ringing gots to shut it off. seeya.

Hi everyone. :)
Er, I think I still haven't quite understood what a moor is. :S Is it a swampy area or one with lots of grass .. or both?
Anyway. I googled for reference and I hope this fits with the brief now. I started doing an underwater gate but I figure that's wrong. :sadcheerleader:
So, this is it. i should maybe rotate one of the obelisks a bit more so that it's facing us. I hope I can finish. I'll try!!

For those who still need clarification on what a moor is, think of the desolate, rock covered fields of backyard Europe. Very barren landscape. Not much life other than a little brush and moss, but use your imagination.

Braden: Great work. Nice composition, good lighting and great mood. Keep it up.
Otta: I think you should pull the camera back quite a bit. To really help get a feel for the space. Right now it feels too tight on the subject. Unless the subject is really really really big. Which in that case you need something to give the viewer a sense of scale.
Here's my WIP. I'm not really sure where to take it from here. Does it work? Should I try again? What do you think?
yaniv
October 25th, 2008, 05:37 AM
otta, your value scheme doesnt really help to get depth, and the building and lion are on the same line...... push a bit the building or bring the lion closer to camera to get more contrast
remember values in backgroubd should be whiter and less satureted, keep strongest and weakest value for the fore ground, keep it on !
corspufo, nice composition, clearly leading the eyes.
However colors are way too saturated in my eyes, and lacks a bit of variations.
Also maybe the bushes on the left sides are too repetitive, i mean exactly same volume and silouhettes, maybe you can give some more randomness.
cheers

I'm having creative block recently and its really starting to do my head in. Nothing i do seems to turn out right. I've wasted so much time today trying to figure out some markers and nothing works, i've even somehow forgotten how to paint, which is like..the most frustrating thing ever. Part of this is because i didnt really plan this out beforehand, but damn, i have a vivid image pictured in my mind of what i want this to be but my hands are just not cooperating with me.
I'll probably give this eow up if im like this again tomorrow, i dont want to waste another day making myself frustrated over nothing D:.
Pumpkin- nice grass :). I really like the footprints and the subtle marker too, gj. One thing id moan about is that the skeleton doesnt really look convincing, it doesnt really look floppy and slumped enough to have been hanging out there long enough to decay.

Ooh, I like moors. I never realised how much I took them for granted though.
Braden M - love the light path.
ALH - keep at it, reminds me of Cornwall - derelict tin mines etc.
Tsujni - beautiful light
Pumpkin - I agree with ALH, great grass, the tree sits a little awkwardly for me though.

corspufo and pootle-thanks for the comments. I think I need to work on the spacial relationships of the foreground, middleground and background a little bit, but i think this will do for now.
Pootle-very nice composition and color. I could see this painting going really far. I would just add a little interest to the middle ground with some rocks or something.
yoitisi- great start to your painting. Just a little work to the sky would make this a killer piece.
Son of a bitch. Is this 98? I put 99 on mine. Oh well.

Just a thumbnail I've been playing with. I think I'm going to change almost everything other than the color scheme. I'm trying to avoid anything that goes along with what others are doing (just to force myself to come up with new ideas), so I think I'll change both the markers and the composition.

Whatever is down there, its sure making the birds freak out..
I feel guilty for abusing brushes so much for this, but i didnt want to spend too much time on it :). Pretty much finished now.
EDIT: i lied. I did more. Im still not sure of the sexed up colours, they work yet not, i have a bit of a habit of being scared of contrast so perhaps a darker version is good for me to keep and not fiddle with any longer. It nukes some of the subtle colours from the original, but does help this look more like an old classic landscape, which is what i was aiming for in the first place :).
The birds are less subtle now too. Instead of mixing up the brushes like i should have i kept it at one, which does make them rather odd looking- but that is kinda the point, something is not right over there.

The only time you should need an outside host is for the final burning thread - your thumbnails must be outside hosted. You main image can be uploaded here.
