Really cool, what technique / Material do you use for the modelling?
I'm guessing hobby epoxy putty (The one warhammer/gundam/etc guys use), but I'd like details on how you do them.

the base model is done with a 3d software ,then i make it print in resin after i add details with epoxy putty ,plastic card ect...

Hopefully this thread is still active, this is cool!
Ive been looking into 3d printing and thinking of getting a couple models done (the cheaper powder version, not resin).
Out of curiousity, how much did it cost to have your models made in resin? They seem to be a pretty good size so I was wondering if that cost you an arm and a leg.
Also, how did you go about making them fully articulate? Did you have all the pieces printed up seperately then mold/cast them with pivot hinge points?

Hey, cool robots. Really like the 3d prints. Can you get a lot of detail out of 3d printers these days? I know they've come a long way from a few years ago but i dont really know much else about them. Keep it up.

This is really cool! I am learning how to use zbrush, and find this fascinating. do you model individual non-organic models that are latter merged in subtools? or if nott, how do you get such even, clean and solid forms?

Just got my model test shot ,i will start the build up as soon i get the photo-etched parts and decals or maybe not ... too happy to have it .
the factory who did the production is the same than the one who make the Dust model ,the quality is really great and it really looks like a plastic model kit .
i made the model hollow i guess i will scratch build some interior mechanism.
thanks for looking.

Great Robots!

November 26th, 2009, 06:09 AM
Robots are now entering homes for domestic service, taking away many menial tasks that humans dislike, including cleaning floors and windows. They are harvesting fruit, milking cows, pumping petrol and building cars. They are faster and more efficient at many of these jobs than a human could be.
Professor Sharkey, who owns his own robot vacuum cleaner, said: "These type of robots are helping mankind to take away the tedious jobs at home. Also the recent developments in robot surgery are hugely beneficial for all of us. The da Vinci robot, for example, can perform operations on prostate cancer patients with less scarring and damage faster than a surgeon and therefore get patients out of hospital sooner."
However, the expert warns that there are currently no government guidelines in place for the rapidly increasing use of robots. Professor Sharkey is also concerned about the use of robots in other walks of life, including the use of robots to look after children and the elderly. The ageing population in the West and in Japan, for example, is growing rapidly and there are worries about how the young will be able to look after them. There is a now a great deal of effort in the area of robot elderly care and robot companionship.

nice retrobots, btw have you seen the new version of Groboto is going to have some plugin integration with Zbrush?
Just thought I'd mention it as you seem to be using Zbrush. Here's the gist:
Darrel's Thread at Zbrush Central (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=60734)
Whats the average cost of getting models that size printed?

well i guess if you want a model with separate parts it will cost you more than in one piece ,it vary with the size but for a nice printing i will say around 250$ minimum for a model like this one i can't tell exactly because the print cost was include in the prototype process by the chinese factory .

Does the factory give you the mold for that price, so you can continue casting your own copies at home? Or do they keep it, so you have to come back to them and pay separate for each copy?

i was talking about the 3D printing of the prototype alone ,there is a lot of company who do 3d printing and it's enough if you want to have one ex or do a limited cast in your home (i started the project this way as a garage kit ) but if you want a finish product made by a factory prices start around 3500/4000 $ minimum (i don't feel they will accept work for less) must add the prototype cost too , prices will of course depend with the number of parts in your kit .
hope it helps.

I am looking at your painted yellow robot. It's really well made with the rust. Do you paint the rust spots from aesthetic feeling and instinct, aiming for interesting patterns? Or do you try to plan the placement, and size, of the rust spots in a logic calculated scientific way?
For example, above the right wheel there is a big spot of rust, and it looks great, but I can't understand how you reasoned for it.

well the rust effect is an easy trick half random/ half control :
you do a rust color base when dry you put water on place you want rust then put SALT (yes salt) when the salt is dry you paint with the color you want remove the salt with a brush or water (it change the effect ) and voilą rust effect (far more quick than paint it) you have to do some more work after that to unify the whole thing but you get the idea ,check Zluca post about his robots he is the master of this technic.

So just to clarify the prototype print cost you 250$, and it must be made of some cheap plastic?
But for a final resin piece you are paying 3500/4000 $?
That means your Kit will cost 3700-4000$ to make any profit.
I must be confused because there is no way the factory is incurring 3500-4000$ cost while printing one figure of that size, unless they are going to make it out of gold!
I always wanted to know about 3d printing (does 3d scanning exist?), but with a price of 3000-4000 + 250$, it is just not economical at all :(

i missed that post anyway i will answer just for the people who wanted infos about the making :
print is for one model (from 3d) and it is around 250$ and more depend the number of parts .
4000$ and more(working with a factory) is for making a limited run of the kits say 100/200 pcs, here again depends parts, size ,box ,decals etc ...
Now the new stuff :
i did a blog (in japanese only for now but mostly pictures) where i post the new robots and sometimes stuff i like .

since my last post there is 2 more models :
