Baby Sea Turtle...Updated 8-30-08 Painted Piece

This is my first time posting a sculpture here. It is also my first 3d sculpture done in Sculpey. I know it is really nothing special or really detailed. I am still learning and trying to improve. I have learned so much from all the wonderful artists here though, so Thank You all for posting your sculptures and tips.

The baby sea turtle is life size at 2½ inches tall.

I think it's adorable. What did you use for the eyes? I really should try to do something cute like this instead of always trying to do monsters.

LOL Thanks! :hugsmile: I need to try monsters :) I really love the evil things, but I love cute things too.
I used hand blown glass eyes...7 mm size in dark amber color. I get mine on ebay from a seller named jncshop. They have all sizes and colors, even split pupil for frogs and reptiles. Do not get the plastic eyes though, they will melt in the oven if you are using sculpey!

I think the curves and the shape overall are awesome. Details like texture are just decoration, but the form is really sweet. Something seems to be wrong with the shape of the egg, but the turtle itself shows some great work and understanding.

Kilh- Their eggs are round and kind of leathery so when the babies hatch, the eggs arent round anymore, they kind of stretch a little :) That may be why it looks odd.

I think you'd be surprised. There's a tendency to overlook the opportunities a clean sculpt like this provides. You've picked out details that offer "landmarks" for the painter to make decisions that can take this happy, little turtle in an entirely different direction.

I'm quite certain with a dose of imagination and a little paint, this cute, lovable hatchling could be transformed into a vile, slavoring carrier of infectious undersea-rabies. It all comes down to vision.

And if this is your first sculpt, it shows a strong start and a careful hand. I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Absolutely adorable! I think it's very well done, so don't be too hard on yourself. I'm still only on my second sculpt, hope my third can be cute like this one! :)

King Unicorn~ Yes it is my first 3d sculpture. Thank you for the insight...and the creative outlook! I would love to see him all undersea rabbid and monsterish! I just do not know how to do that LOL.

I love it! I'm wondering about the eyes...do you sculpt more clay around the eyes after adding them to every cast? Or just pop them in?

Mike~ I set them into the mold before casting the resin...it takes a bit to get them right but this way, there is no extra sculpting afterwards :)

It is beautiful, have you made molds of the work? the copies would be very easy of selling because it is a very tender turtle. I love it!

I think your painting techniques made up for the simplicity you were worried about. You've captured the texture of the turtle and retained all of the bright-eyed wonder of a new hatchling bursting into the world.

Your eye application really does work here. And 50 no less? Are you painting all 50 by hand?

once again, A superb piece. You have a great grasp on sculpting reality yet still giving it a touch of magic. The turtle is a spiritual animal and you being able to capture this creature during its birth is absolutely amazing. Hope to see more in the future, and maybe try a fantasy beasty next time such as a troll or dragon. i think you could make these mythical creatures come to life.
