P.O.W.! Challenge 13
Deadline: Sunday, September 7, 2008, 11:59 pm anywhere in the world.
Topic: Just Passing Time
We're back to our usual mess, and it's Number 13--oooOOOOOoooooo... :P
I'm tossing a theme in that can be (I think) easily interpreted with or without copy if you think a bit before you start. "Just Passing Time" can mean a lot of things to different people, so I'm hoping we get some interesting stuff out of this one. You can interpret the art any way you wish, and the more creatively, the better. Any media. B&W or Color.
You can present your solution as a minimum of TWO to a tentative maximum of SIX pages which adhere to standard comic specs as below...and, yes, you can have the first or last (or both) as a splash page if you want. You can go to additional pages without asking if you have a decent idea that requires it--just don't get too extreme on page counts
Standard Comic Book Size:
--Trim size: 6 5/8" x 10 1/4"
--Live art area: 6" x 9"
--Bleed size before trimming: 6 7/8" x 10 1/2" (1/8" in all directions)
This thread will be the place you ask questions on this challenge, trash talk, post WIPs and post your final art. See the READ THIS FIRST thread for all specs.
Good luck.
P.O.W.! Challenge 14 will be posted before Sunday Midnight, September 7, 2008.
Reminder: Make sure you've read everything above. I've made some changes to the deadline date and Challenge timing.

I might even try something for this topic, I had great fun last time. It's probably going to be pretty random, I've got several ideas going on at the moment.
Actually, after some thinking I suddenly remembered the opening scenes from Sergio Leones 'Once Upon a Time in the West'. Fits perfectly with this topic.

I'm hoping to actually do this one myself. Got an idea about 5 this morning that is so off the wall it woke me up... :P

I want to join in aswell but.... I'm total noob with anything comic book related, so...
--Trim size: 6 5/8" x 10 1/4"
--Live art area: 6" x 9"
--Bleed size before trimming: 6 7/8" x 10 1/2" (1/8" in all directions)
what the hell is trim size, live art area and bleed size? :P

There's a better description in the "Read this first" thread (Nooooowww I wonder why we called it that....? :P ), but...
Trim size is the size of the page, like when you buy the comic and measure it.
Live size is a rough guide area centered more or less on the page that guarantees that anything you think is important won't get cut off unless the printer is pissing 200 proof alcohol when he trims you stuff...
Bleed is an extra amount added to all four sides (1/8" in the US, and sometimes 1 pica, which is 1/6") that extends BEYOND the trim size and is is trimmed off, but your art should go to this bleed size if you have something like a figure or background running off the page. Without it, you could get a thin white line at one or more sides of some of your pages where the knife didn't trim accurately. Basically, this is an extra bit of art that is wasted to allow a cutting tolerance.
It's why they refer to a page with no white border as a "full-bleed" page.

I'm still working on Nathan Long's comic when the mood strikes me, but I just had an idea for an adaptation on this one I will probably do.
Sorry in advance for what promises to be another radical expressionistic effort. I can't help myself.:oneye:

interpretations to help a bit...
[It's] just passing time, as in time is passing.
[I'm/we're/they're] just passing time, as in chiilin' out.
Just [watching] passing time.
Just passing time, as in a race.
Just passing time, as in a tour guide's, "...so if you look to the right..."
Just passing time...do you want the mashed potatoes, too?
Pun: Thyme as in herb.
Just passing time, and hopefully the toilet won't overflow...
:P
Time can be "seen," experienced, measured, used, ignored, and modify something.

Coincidentally, I am using a song myself. Here is a WIP of pages 2 and 3 of a (now) planned 4 pages based on "So What" by Ministry.

Hey guys,
I will definitely be joining you guys this week for this one. I am half way done with mine. Will finish it today!
Edit: Oh boo... I read the requirements and I don't know if mine will fit.. since it's a political cartoony comic than anything... hmm... I will see what I can do... still want to join.

Don't screw yourself up time wise if it doesn't exactly fit the specs. As long as it's sequential, we can go back and correct it later if we want.

A Head's Up!
I have a family situation (nothing serious) to take care of that will cost me Sunday and Monday out of the house, so...
If any of you guys need the extra time, take it and consider Monday late night the deadline for this one, since I won't be able to see anything you post til Tuesday morning.

HERE'S THE NOT-SO-GOOD EXCUSE~~~~~~~>
I was helping some friends of mine out by making some suggestions to make their website better. I ended up in a deathlock with the CSS, since I completely forgot a lot of the conventions for it in the past 6 months. Anyhow..their "maybe" site, the revision:
http://www.iftcommand.com/chapters/ulysses/new%20site_maybe/index.php
from their old site:

I'm back. Sorry for the absence--family thing resolved...
I don't have mine finished either (eight-pager)...actually, the sketches haven't been scanned yet for finish and there's no way i can stay awake tonight.
I hate to have only one/none for a challenge, so can you guys get something further along if we extend the deadline til next Sunday? I'd like to finish mine, and HFix, Arttorney and llothcat, do you think you could pull it off with the extra time? If so, let's do an extension now.
If anybody wants to give it a try, the deadline is now Sunday September 14th. I'm hoping it helps.

I have a four pager done but I am tired of struggling with my lame ass CD burner tonight (so I can bring the resized images to the work computer where I have internet). I have come to work to get some floppies which I will save the images on tomorrow morning.

I took a lot of liberties with the lyrics to "So What" by Ministry and also to "The Scream" by Edvard Muench. Hope this is not too abstract conceptually.

Hey,
I don't know if I'm going to get any more of this done... I may have to just post some pencils later... even though those aren't finished to any kind of good standard. But hey, I wanted to get something up here.

I may as well join in on the pre-posting thing, and no, mine is not finished. i don't even have much of a clear story. And I still have to figure out how the other charactor is going to look--or not.(I'm beginning to like the off panel consersating-thing)
I think I'm getting the hang of working all digital. This was done in my vector program.

eh...not happy with 3 of the panels, and now I admit that maybe, just maybe, it should be a wee bit longer.

Something told me that I shouldn't post a Challenge 13, but...Murphy's Law took over in spades...
I'll have the poll up by tomorrow (Tuesday night) if all goes well. I ran into some small problems again here--like the remnants of Hurricane Ike leveled us with 65-80 mph winds and destroyed just about everything that wasn't tied down. The power and web connections went out for about 150,000+ people here. And right in the middle of the worst of the wind storm, one of our horses (not ours personally but at our barn) suffered heart failure and had to be put down. It was sad, but he was 30 years old and blind, which is about 80 years-old-plus in human years if I did the math right...
So...I'm playing catch-up temporarily. I have a dental appointment in Pittsburgh in the morning, but should be done and back in time to post the poll that night if I'm not too doped up or tired.
