Hey All, been awhile since i posted.... I'm starting on a HUGE project to jump start a portfolio, as i currently do not have one put together... so i decided to do an 8 character X-Men series sculpt, the plan is to do 4 heroes vs 4 villians, and for the bases of all the characters to fit together to make a huge diorama...
the heroes vs villians i am going to do are:
Wolverine vs Sabretooth
Cyclops vs Mr. Sinister
Rogue vs Mystique
Colossus vs Juggernaut
I'm going to us the classic costumes for al except Wolvie is going to be in his X-Force costume and Mystique will be in Black Leather vs the white dress (i hate that costume)
Anyways, here is some WIP shots, i plan on having my buddy who is an amateur photographer do some really nice High Def shots when they are finished...

Hi ZJ,
Wow that's quite a goal you got there, kudos for your enthusiasm!
I'm no expert on anatomy but to me his legs don't seem right, I think that they're too far apart at the top?
I'm a big Xfan and have been waiting for someone to do a Rogue sculpt, I want to do them so bad, alas, other things :)
Can't wait to see what you pull out, good luck man!
(Oh and remember 'with great ambition, comes great tiredness')

This is a great beginning...there are definitely some issues with anatomy, but anybody just starting out is sure to have some. my suggestion is to find the right resources to aid you in getting the anatomy just right. have lots of pics on hand of your reference. so in this case you'd want lots of pics of wolvie...doesn't matter if their in the pose you are looking for or not. then go to a site i use call fantasy stock art for artists. there you can find full turn around shots of poses. you can then see what all the angles of the pose loook like. this is very helpful, especially if you don't have money to invest in anatomy books.anyways hope this helps. like you i am trying to build up some material for a portfolio. maybe i can get some training...Good Luck!!!!

He looks good! I have to say that the thighs are a bit too narrow where they connect to the body. I'm no master sculptor but I noticed it in the last shot. The hand and blades look great, and I think the project seems promising.

Thanks guys, I have since baked him, i noticed an issue with his thighs also, and i think i compensated... i have begun to paint him, will post pics tonight...
the idea behind this series is to show the progress i have made, so i hope that the final sculpt of the series and the first have MAJOR differences in quality...as well as to have a lot of Current artwork...
Check out my DeviantArt Gallery for other stuff i've done, i did a Prince Arthas sculpt i'm really happy with in there...: http://zaahnjanson.deviantart.com/

Good to see your progress. For a first layer of paint it's fine but I really would take the time to go over it.
At the moment I would say his skin is a little too pinky, I always add a little yellow to my skin tones.
Love the belt buckle.
For your first one you should be really happy, geez the final Xman in the series will be amazing !!!!!!

Th paint definitely steps this guy up a notch. Looking forward to your next statue in the series, who will it be?

ps. love that you went with the x-force coloring for his costume. are you doing any other x-forcer's?

Yeah i always have trouble mixing skin tones, for this one i used a pink, little red and a crap-load of Naples Yellow, but i think i should add some tan into it...
thanks for the kind words!

Good over all work! I can only hope my first sculpts turn out so smooth and finished looking! :-)
Just some tips that may (hopefully) be of some help since it seems you're using a standard brush to paint your pieces (I personally don't own an airbrush, so I'll be going down the same path).
I would recommend using, after baking, some painters/masking/automotive masking tape (pin striping) tape to section off or outline spots where two colors will come butting up against each other...for example, the legs. What you could try on future pieces is tape off the gray, cover it or section it off with the tape, and paint just the black, and then let it dry. Then reverse and tape off the black to paint the gray, this should leave you with really crisp sectioned painted areas, and cut down and any smudges and mixed/blurry spots.
Again, overall really cool looking sculpt! Can't wait to see more!

this sculpt would have benefitted from tha advice you were given earlier about anatomy, kinda ruins it for me really, I get past it to see the wolverine.
But thats something to work on.
Good luck
