Hey what's up? I'm Daphne, I work for BBC America, and tried messaging a few of you (Davi, Micaiah, Elwell) to see if it's cool to start an official discussion thread for the brit-teen crossover Skins. Didn't hear back from anyone, so hope this is ok.

For those unfamiliar with the show, it follows a wild and diverse group of teenagers in Bristol growing up through an unbiased lens, allowing the audience to think for themselves and take what they want out of each story. Once in awhile art transcends into television, and I think some of you might agree this is one of those shows. And though it's written by teens (most under age 22) and about teens, it's geared toward mature audiences so adults will be into it as well. Some are actually calling it, "Dawson's Creek on speed!" Lots of info can be found at the official website: http://bbcamerica.com/skins - and you can check out some cast interviews on the YouTube page: http://www.youtube.com/skinsbbcamerica

The show airs this Sunday the 17th on BBC America at 9pm/8c. If you tune in, I wanna hear what you guys think. I think one of my favorite aspects is that it doesn't fall into the teen show cliche of rich brats in big cities with irrelevant problems, and instead gives us a pretty realistic take on life. But that's me - let's hear your thoughts...

Yay, another serie about young people and their problems.
I think Stewie said it best.
“This is the most important time in our lives, right now, in high school,”
“High school is such a serious thing…these things matter.”
Can't you just broadcast animaniacs? That shit was funny.
Or freakazoid. Now that was a quality serie.

I never actually watched it (when it twas on in england) had the same reaction as hysoka (isn't it great that were open minded to something new, we never judge a book by its cover :P ) but alot of people said it was good, might be worth watching if your into that kinda shit i dunno.
Ps if you have weight with the bbc opening poster should get emmerdale or coronation street broadcast in america, im sure they'd looove that.. or whatever one the bbc shows, bbc itv same shit differnt letters... but wait shit skins is 4?

Or some of those fancy animation series MTV used to air in the 90s

I don't get that channel (Our TV is from the 80s and doesn't go high enough...haha) but I did see part of the first ep while at a friend's house.
Can one of you Brits explain to me how the word "safe" migrated into meaning "great"? Just curious. :D

It's just teen slang... is there an actual person out there responsible for creating it? I don't know. It's like asking who decided "tight" was the new word for "cool?" I also heard "safa" is the superlative to "safe." So actually safe is good - and safa is great! hahaha

Teen 1: Ok, I've called this m33ting to find a new word for great. Because great isn't great enough anymore.
Pothead B: Lol wut?
Teen A: I iz serial dude. even regular people are using great nowadays.
Pothead B: I say, old bean! I must express my astonishment of your claim! Is this fact, or a clever ruse?
Teen A1: Riiight... anyway, we need something safe to replace it with. So that infedels won't abuse it.
Pothead who cares, he'll die in a gutter anyway: How about safe?
Teen_001: Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant. Anyway, lobotomy time.
Potlimb: Way ahead of you man, already had mine done yesterday.
Teen Steam: Safe!

Oh, I wasn't asking about a specific person creating it...just where the migration of the word came from. I'm relatively sure I know where "tight" came from. :P

O_O haha not even going there...
I found a few more brit and/or teen slang terms I wasn't really familiar with until Skins... in fact, I didn't even know "skins" meant the rolling paper used for joints until recently lol...
Bangers - sausages, often served with mashed potatoes
Pillock - an inadvertently stupid person, an idiot
Stroppy - ill-tempered
Tosser - an idiot or a moron; a slang reference to a masturbator.
...maybe we can just start creating our own slang terminology - then n00bz of ConceptArt will have to learn the lingo to be down hahaha :P

Australian Slang I picked up at the last workshop:
Spunky - Cute or Attractive
Mirana

DaphneMays - Knew the first and the last...the two in the middle are interesting. Oh those wacky teens.
Zaxser - Huh. Australian? That's a fairly old term used here (US)...but perhaps the Aussies have given it renewed meaning?
(I swear I will quit with the highjack of this thread...)

Yeah, I'm in the US too and "spunky" has been pretty common for some time as far as I know...
Btw, is anyone on Twitter? If so, you can follow Skins to stay updated, find other fans or just say hey. It's all here: http://twitter.com/skinsbbcamerica

Yeah, probably best if you stay off using spunky as that sort of adjective in the uk. Skins is ok, calling it art might be a bit of a stretch.
Wordwise if in doubt, http://www.urbandictionary.com/

'BBC'? Do the BBC regularly buy other Channel's shows to export? (Seen as that Channel 4 made Skins)

Yes, BBC America has always televised programming from BBC as well as other UK stations.

Ah fair enough. I heard they showed Spaced as well. By the way the slang terms listed further above, are all very general in age group.
So is the BBC hoping to make Skins a commercial success? Hopefully they're not going to sell it off to an American company to be remade, like The Office.

Yeah I assume BBC wants everything to be successful ^_^
I don't think there are any plans for it to be re-made, seems unlikely... if for some reason it was, I'm really glad they're airing the original first!

are you advertising for your show? like some sort of viral marketing?
looking at these photos you've posted, i can surmise two things, these kids need to bathe and they need to stop making faces when a camera is infront of them.
go team venture!

i find it hard to see how this relates to the CA members at all.
i wouldn't mind viral marketing if it spoke to my target demographic...
this is very poor marketing strategy. someone isn't taking their job very seriously.
poor audience identification = no buzz

in daphnes defense, this show is actually really good. not the sort of thing i would normally watch , but when compared with crap like dawsons creek and the oc it rates pretty highly. the second series is excellent.

...Skins in a U.S setting?...hhmmm.... I mean, you guys are dripping with teen dramas already; usually about rich folk in the frigging Hamptons or O.C, playing football or basketball and trying to stay popular (my US teen drama knowledge is limited, thank god) SO I suspect that this show will be dripping with 'hot' looking teens doing drugs, getting drunk, having casual sex and worrying whether they will still be popular tomorrow...no, I wont be watching...soz..:)
I have to agree with Kingshaj, I dont see why a thread is needed for this show. I know 'anything' goes in the Lounge BUT, a whole thread? You would need hardcore fans to stay interested and quite frankly, your not gona find many here....
Good-luck with the (unnecessary) promotion anyway...
