Welcome to the SUPER Stylised Monthly Challenge – Sponsored by 3DTotal.com and 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2dartistmag.com). Please post all images & questions in this thread.

So what is this challenge all about?
Each month we will select a title for the Super Stylised Challenge, and we'll post some images for you to use as reference. The title is there to be interpreted as and how you wish. All you have to do then is to think up your concept, paint it, and create a final 2D image of this in your own way!

This regular monthly challenge is designed to bring in some great content for 2DArtist Magazine – in the form of final images from the Top Ten and Making Ofs from the top 3 winners – as well as some great prizes and exposure just for you!

What are we looking for?
Funny and humorous entries which interpret the title of the Super Stylised Challenge however you see fit. We’re pretty much leaving everything open for your interpretation and stylisation!! All we ask is that the title of the Super Stylised Challange is instantly recognisable in your final image! All you have to do then is to render your stylised/abstract/cartoon masterpiece and you’re away!

What are the timeframes and requirements?
The rules are pretty laid back: please submit 1 x 2D Final Image. If you want to have a background or include some graphical elements or text on your image, it's entirely up to you. Image posts should be around 800 pixels across, but please work at a much higher res as the top 10 will be featured in 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2DArtistmag.com) and we'd like the winner's image to be used as the article cover!

There will be 1 challenge per month, with the deadline being the end of the month GMT. A 'VOTING' thread will be created at the end of the month.

For a valid entry, you must make sure your final image is posted in both the WIP thread before the end of the month - 31st August 11:59PM GMT - and then in the 'VOTING' thread before the 8th September 2008. Voting will take place from the 8th September to the 15th September 2008, when the winners will be announced!

We require the top 3 winners to submit 'Making Of' overview articles that will be shown on either 3DTotal or in 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2DArtistmag.com); these need to show the stages of your creation, different elements and some brief explanation text of why, and how, you did what you did. We will format this into some nice-looking pages to give you some great exposure, and us some quality content. This will serve as some great exposure for you which, along with your prizes, is a pretty cool incentive to get involved!

Everyone has to post their FINAL image in the WIP thread before the end of the month deadline (31st August 11:59PM GMT), as well as their WIPs during the month. You then have to post it (exactly the same final image) again in the VOTING thread. This means there is a very clear deadline: no-one can work after the end of the month and the VOTING thread still exists as before, as this is a nice clean thread with final images only which is used for the judging!

Posting Works in Progress
Each challenge will have one thread that starts with this info and the brief at the top. This is where all entrants post all WIPs, give feedback, and generally laugh at the crazy ideas that are emerging each month!

Please don't start any new threads – just reply to this one already set up!

Prizes!!
1st Place Any 3 items from the 3DTotal Shop (http://shop.3DTotal.com). We sell lots of items these days, such as our book (http://www.3DTotal.com/book/), Design Studio Press books (http://www.3DTotal.com/design%5Fstudio%5Fpress/), textureCDs (http://www.3DTotal.com/textures/), Shorts DVDs (http://www.3DTotal.com/shorts/), lots of training DVDs (http://www.3DTotal.com/training/), and 12 month subscriptions to 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2DArtistmag.com) and 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2dartistmag.com).

2nd Place
Any 2 items from the 3DTotal Shop (http://shop.3DTotal.com).

3rd Place
Any 1 item from the 3DTotal Shop (http://shop.3DTotal.com).

We do unfortunately have to limit prizes to 1 book per winner per challenge, due to high postage costs for heavier items. Please note that we cannot offer the 3D Printed models as prizes!

Judging
Everyone who took part can cast a vote of their top 3 in order, and the 3DTotal/2DArtist team will also cast their votes. We will award 3pts for a 1st place vote, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. Then we will add them up and ship out your prizes!

*This month we have chosen Ancient Warrior!

This is gonna be fun. Although i'm not sure if the warrior should be old or his outfit or both. Meh, just sketch and see what happens.

ab4185: That's an amazing sketch! I'm really looking forward to see the final version. there's one thing though, just a personal opinion, the right arm looks a bit off. It's probably not a big deal, but everything else looks so nice, the muscle group are so very well rendered and all, and that right arm stands out as a weak link.

Hope to see more.

Hi guys, nice concepts and finals here.

Here is my [at this moment] Final image and WiPs I made for this.

This is one of the 'Yethi' 's tribe, an ancient Hymalayan people. They lived in 4500 b.c in high mountains of Everest. This guy is a Hunter with his yak.

bstsk - i want to hunt you down and steal your talent.

Matteo'89 - your sketch was so very expressive and detailed, but i feel as though something was lost in the painting process - particularly in regard to their faces and the yak's fur. your other concept sketches on the right are sweetness also.

tommoy - your first black n white sketch was awesome! i found it more appealing and complex than your two updates. that sketch was like a cool piece of art i'd hang up on my wall.

saleem - i like the second of your sketches, the one with the warrior looking off to the side. it makes him feel like he's got more of a past to me, hurrah the drama!

Matteo'89
August 14th, 2008, 05:21 AM
Nice final - bstsk - :)

Rosatron - yeah, I think I'm going to change yak's fur 'cause there is a lot of time. I'm still looking for easy and effective methods, I'm not often digital painter [I'm more pencil geek :)] :P.

August 14th, 2008, 06:58 AM
matteo 89 - man, that is one cool character. very well stylized. though I actually prefer the sketch work ( the colored piece lost a lot of the energy and spice the sketch had ), all in all - very solid work.

ok, quick question. Does it have to be funny to be correctly stylized? Because my medium, way of creating, and final look of my pictures is very different (stylized). If I have to make it funny then I will, but if it is not required and doing otherwise will not hurt my chances then I would like to create a darker tone.

bstsk

I wouldn´t say it has to be funny... It´s just that stylized drawing encourage it.

stylised means nonphotorealistic, as i see it.

Thanks Chuck-Mate :)

Hmm, so I'm still thinking about a final piece. Today I've done this one.
For now I dunno how to add color to it, I mean what style of painting to use... Maybe simple color palette like in 'Asterix & Obelix' comics [I'm big fan], or maybe I will go one day to buy a markers and try to do it in analog technique.

So I've changed the Yak's face and made the fur more stylised. Oh and also added a poncho for warrior.

stylised means nonphotorealistic, as i see it.

I also can't figure out precisely what stylized means in this challenge. The definition is : tr.v. styl·ized, styl·iz·ing, styl·iz·es
1. To restrict or make conform to a particular style.
2. To represent conventionally; conventionalize.
I guess it means to make something that is recognizable as a style, your style, and if that means its realistic i guess it should be no problem. However most entries have a humorous, comical approach.

Matteo'89, great drawing, and I'm a big fan of Asterix and Obelix too. I am wondering how well they are known around the world.

Rosatron, thanks for the comment. Eventually i went for the funny approach. I struggled with the first sketch but just couldn't seem to get the the pixels right.

Matteo : The inklines are sweetness, so yeah it'd be nice for you to pick a colouring style that accentuated them. Asterix colouring would be an interesting style choice, as would calvin and hobbes :)

ok, quick question. Does it have to be funny to be correctly stylized?

the answer is - no, not really.

and I don`t think it`s that complicated to define, either.

"stylized" means - pushing reality through a "filter" (if you will) of any given style. any given style.

which means you first have to have a recognizable style of your own (which isn`t that simple to achieve) or - you borrow someone else`s style/approach/look/etc` to create your piece. you might even want to combine lots and lots of styles and appearances, though that would just confuse the onlooker. finally - you might try and just go crazy with it, and invent a style on the spot. as long as you remember that you want to represent reality, not make a photocopy of it.
that`s it.

for example -
this is a tree:
http://pws.byu.edu/tree_tour/images/tree116small.jpg

these are a stylized trees:

Voting will then start immediately afterwards and will run until 15th September 2008 10:30AM GMT.

We will post to commence the Voting on the 8th September. Voting will be the same as last month, with each voter putting forward their top 3 entries, in order: 3pts for a 1st place, 2pts for 2nd, and 1pt for 3rd. This means that we will all have to choose very carefully!

Please feel free to give reasons for your selection, as it will be good feedback for everyone!

Thanks again for the great work that you have all put in. We look forward to this month's entries! Good luck, everyone!

Many thanks for all your hard work!

Great entries here! Sadly i was unable to finish mine, but i'll be sure to vote if i can. I've been in the process of moving, and am currently at a temporary place until i find somewhere so been really busy and i don't have frequent internet access!

Hopefully i'll be able to take part in the next topic.
