View Full Version : pollice verso
October 28th, 2003, 10:25 AM
The crowd is the true ruler of Thunderdome. When a gladiator warrior falls to the victor, the crowd screams to chear on the fallen warriors' fate, using "pollice verso", or turned thumb.
The final pieces are posted in a separate thread to use as a gallery.
Post your comments on the final pieces for Thunderdome 6 here!
Good luck to all who enter; the hour draws near.
Habet, peractum est!!!

Hey (MCM) Jon,
Most excellent work my friend. I hadn't seen your work in awhile. Much improved!!!! You're going to pass us all.
October 28th, 2003, 05:10 PM
Thumbs up brother man! Way to go!!!!
October 29th, 2003, 04:37 AM
AWESOME work everybody! Good luck and I must say that judges are in trouble.
October 29th, 2003, 06:33 PM
i forgot who the person was the posted the egyptian influenced piece in the finished section, but i do recall them saying it was immortal, isn't that against the rules?
October 30th, 2003, 12:02 AM
Dan , when are you going to put up your masterpiece?? Guys like you raise the bar way too high.
October 30th, 2003, 02:10 AM
Yep, the rules read
The warrior can be male or female. Human or non-human, but must be independant (they can wipe their own ass), mortal, and have at least the intelligence of a human.
Anyways, finally thats for the judges to decide. Because the rules also read:
As long as they survive in the Thunderdome, they don't decline
So that means they are, somehow, all immortal. If they can't die from time, they can at least die from a blade... ;)
My faves are the Hun and the rubygenesis' Centaur.
October 30th, 2003, 10:06 AM
much love to carlos!!!
although its cheating having kchen and fosters help!! hehe jk jk....
my favourite is carlo!!!!
October 30th, 2003, 10:55 AM
I like the Defender of Christianity, but this piece is breaking the rules. It's not an ancient civilization, and it's in the middle ages. Mitch, how are these types of pieces going to be judged? I have a feeling there will be more of these from the Middle Ages.
I mean, if these can still win, then we should just change the rules all together.
October 30th, 2003, 11:59 AM
many things will be taken into consideration in the judging process. I can also say (hint) that when posting the finished pieces, what you add as a tagline will not help the piece win.
most importantly what the judge will be looking at:
1) artistic skill
2) sticking with the descriptions
3) presentation of the character
4) can the character kick some ass in the ring
October 30th, 2003, 12:06 PM
Sounds good to me.
What time you posting Mitch???
October 30th, 2003, 12:07 PM
It's definitely an advantage to count Jon and Kevin among my friends. I do alot of really exaggerated stuff for work and so when Kevin visited me and brought his designs for 'Call Of Duty' i began to itch to do a something realistic and historically accurate, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to do so. I approached it like an illustration assignment from national geographic because i figured most everyone would be designing in a style more appropriate for a videogame.
I really appreciate your compliment, high praise considering the competition.
October 30th, 2003, 12:07 PM
Great stuff everyone, some wonderfull peices.
My personal faves so Far:
Bone: Kickass Azztek. I said it before , but I love you weapon design, and you pulled of the lighting well.
Lukavi: Awsome persian, love his armour design, escpecially his shoulders.
Carlo: Mad skillz, that's all I can say.
Rubygenesis: Damn, YOur Centaur turned out awsome, very powerfull and agile looking.
R_m: Great composition. Lots of emotion.
these last hours willl be the coolest, just to see what everyone comes up with.
October 30th, 2003, 02:03 PM
SoCal Historical Miniatures Convention!
gotta love it.
hmm, looks strangely familiar.
RubyGen, Man your centaur looks AWESOME!! My favorite thus far!
October 30th, 2003, 02:22 PM

October 30th, 2003, 03:11 PM

October 30th, 2003, 05:16 PM
R_M and Joachim's pieces are amazing, but then again so are Carlo and Ruby's pieces. Anyone's ballgame...
October 30th, 2003, 05:40 PM
I like Hordeprime's image, he reminds me of Bubba Hotep!
I also like Joachim's piece, it makes me proud to have a
I have to say my favorite is Carlo's piece though, he's a guy
i'd be afraid to enter the ring with. No "Gods", no Guns, just a
dude who'd beat me with my own head....
oh, I am biased though, 'cause i like the style of his painting.

a Q: is the deadline on halloween night at midnight or tonight (thurs) when the clock strikes twelve?
October 30th, 2003, 07:48 PM
Wow there is some hot stuff in there right now. WOW!.
Remember you have till the last minute of Oct 31 to post.
I have been getting a few emails of people without web service to post thier image. can anyone help these warriors out with a free service out there for them to post? If you can't get anything in time; email em to me (please not a huge file) so they can be judged in time. (Or should I say meet the deadline.)
My email is [email protected]
October 30th, 2003, 08:59 PM
I've got room on my website if anyone needs a link. Email me at [email protected]

October 31st, 2003, 01:30 AM
Wow, everyone's entrys are looking awesome.
I'm placing my money on Dan, amazing work.
October 31st, 2003, 03:48 AM
There are so many great pictures I´m quite humbled to even trying to participate ...
My personal favourite is Kincepts picture and the work of Dan. Chris Andersons is great, too - it would be so hard to judge between them.
The executions of the vikings of Joachim and JerMohler would normally would put them in the first row of the favourite pieces, too, but I personally think they´ve missed the point by taking a medieval culture.
Anyway a great Thunderdome and the first one I tried to participate. Kudos to all the brave fighters and artists around!
October 31st, 2003, 04:02 AM
This is great, everyones art is fantastic...
My five favorites so far, I tried to pic three, but couldn´t :)
HordePrime - Pharoah Warlord
Love the coloring and the lineart, skinny, but still strong and evil...
Joachim - Viking
The coloring is .... Wonderful, love the wolves!
Dan Milligan - Maori
Great art, great contribution, great entry... Inspiring
JerMohler - Viking Warrior
...Loved the lineart in the WIP, the snow is nice, and the details on the viking is great
Otis - Roman
The color and the light makes this futuristic roman to the top.
So far, I put my money on Dan Milligans Maori for the great art and how he presented the stuff.
The executions of the vikings of Joachim and JerMohler would normally would put them in the first row of the favourite pieces, too, but I personally think they´ve missed the point by taking a medieval culture
The vikings was before the medieval culture. The Viking era "started" around year 795.
October 31st, 2003, 08:52 AM
Ok someone want to clear up the Time Zone and give us an official Thunderdome Time. Official Conceptart time is PDT is GMT-8, right?
Thanks, Dan. I'm having a blast doing this.
I'll post my warrior after everyone is in. I would have gotten slaughtered for sure.
October 31st, 2003, 09:02 AM
Actually I think that's the current time for the timezone you've specified in the User CP.
Awesome works everyone, btw.
October 31st, 2003, 09:22 AM
I looked around quite a bit when researching my ancient civilization and I've listened to what everybody on the board has said about the "correct medieval time" and I've come to the conclusion that nobody really knows a dang thing.
There are a variety of opinions when the "Medieval" times rolled around and what it'll come down to is what the moderators think.
That said, it's of my opinion that the Vikings were pre-medieval. The vikings were raiding along the costs of northern Europe as early as 410 AD. They began as a mix of Saxon and Pictish and were later known as the Vikings.
If it would be more to the point to switch my race over to Saxon, that's fine and I'll do that. Either way, I do believe that you can consider my character design from before the middle ages.
But, like everything, it's relative. It'll all come down to what the moderators think.
October 31st, 2003, 09:25 AM
Chris wins the most terrifying award.
Its odd that there are not any comments on Ben's piece. Its gotta be the best conceptually so far. That shield is Damn cool.
October 31st, 2003, 09:50 AM
Milligan:  Anderson:  Kincept:
MrSmith, I think your character design is one of the absolute coolest concepts here. The rendering on the clothes is ridiculously sweet... cheers bud! :chug:
October 31st, 2003, 09:58 AM
Lot's great work here everyone. Now I wish I'd made the effort.
It's almost worth waiting up tonight to see everything, but I have kids that get up early, so me go to bed on time.
October 31st, 2003, 01:17 PM
I'm impressed by all the great entries. Wow!
Chris, you lied! You said you weren't going to enter. That piece rocks! Good colors and action. It actually makes me think of Halloween.
Joachim, nice and clean. I like the sense of tension.
Dan, doh! Can we hand the trophy to you now? Freakin cool stuff.
Ted, haha! An ogre with a sense of humor. That green mesmerizes me...
Some other ones that caught my eye were Rinaldo, Carlo, Stephen, Benzo...the list goes on. Too many cool pieces to comment on all of them. Great job, everyone!
Chris J. Anderson!
October 31st, 2003, 02:35 PM
I'm shocked at the level GRANDNESS of all the great art work!
Sedone, I VERY glad you posted! I was starting to worry that you might have been too busy. Your mercenary dude is hardcore. So he fights for the glory, bling bling and the hoes HAHAHA!! Always cool work from you dude. I know I said I wasn't gonna do one, last Friday my girlfriend basically told me that if I didn't she would drop kick me with a flying lotus kick to my neck.
Prom, my favorite from yours is the guy holding the chopped off head. Your painting style and character ideas are great. Good stuff.
Kincept, I like your drawing and color style for this. The drawing has such movement, the pose has life, and I like your colors a lot.
Dan Milligan, wow dude, you did so much work, you really brought your character to life! Awsome concept!
Bone, your character makes me want to use him in the ultimate castlevannia game ever. I can totally see how he would jump around and fight the toughest battles.
Joachim, nice work, nice movement through out your illustration! That guy has a tough look on his face.
Ted (Seaminus), that guys evil!
Rinaldo, Stephen, Odd, Benzo, Coondoggle, MrSmith, Otis so many others, EXCELLENT! I'm glad so many people joined the competition!!
October 31st, 2003, 05:12 PM

promethose's stlye make it look so dam ez. like he coulda done 50 of em in the time frame given.. all with that same loose style that lets your eye filll in the detail
thanks agian for sharing everybody:beer:
October 31st, 2003, 06:53 PM

October 31st, 2003, 08:46 PM
This is how I have (this is just my humble opioin) Dan/Chris/Joachim so far. I would love to see Rusty's, Marko's, Foster's, TARGETE's and Lung's.
Where you fuckers at :D
October 31st, 2003, 10:32 PM
Stephen, thanks. I've never heard of that movie, so I searched for it and had to laugh because it is pretty similar. It looks like a cool movie, though. I'd like to check it out.
October 31st, 2003, 11:01 PM
Thanks guys! some really awesome work holy crap, its gonna be a tuff call. i had fun =) best of luck. ~Cheers :chug:
October 31st, 2003, 11:09 PM
Awesome work guys, I decided to jump in yesterday heh
There's so much to say, so many excellent pieces this time around...
November 1st, 2003, 12:49 AM
I think the winning work should be the design that best shows the aesthetic of killing. I saw that most (so far) in works by these people( no particular order):
rubygenesis(the bell is a bit much I think though)
Other works were equally impressive, but in reality the design would be impractical and probably hinder more than help.
In terms of color, there are some other really nice designs but it is hard for me to judge more than one point at a time.
November 1st, 2003, 01:00 AM
I'm damn happy to see your site up!
November 1st, 2003, 01:11 AM
I'm really digging Kincept and Dan's of course just for their great designs and colors
Hardcorepixx: Your idea was hilarious.. a samurai with guns and a sony emblem..
Otis: Nice last minute Celt, has an great brooding mood to it..
Prometheus: Always a pleasure to see your work.. Splendid
Nice Siren too..
DarkCult: I love the kukri ( spelled right?) blades.. nice design..
Enigma: Great design you got going there..
November 1st, 2003, 01:34 AM
The work here is incredible. So many I like I dont even know where to begin, I just keep scrolling up and down staring at my monitor.
Good job everyone. Damn good.
November 1st, 2003, 02:21 AM
Like everyone already said, the judges will get trouble picking a winner. You can't really compare all the apples and pears so it will be interesting to see what the judges go for. Details, pose, rendering or realism?
Unfortunately I did my stuff too fast to compete with any of the more detailed concepts.
Personal favs: None mentioned, none forgotten.
November 1st, 2003, 03:36 AM
Good job everyone! I know who I think is going to win, but no suprise there...Dan is the man...we newbies are just going to have to somehow gang up on him someday... lol!
November 1st, 2003, 05:37 AM
My personal favorite was Sedone's, though I really enjoy all of them. Its amazing the kind of work thats on this forum. I feel out of place. Better get moving eh? =oP
November 1st, 2003, 07:31 AM
I just wanted to add my 2 cents and say that I don't think I've seen this many amazing pieces( and I really mean that) in one thread since the sijun speed painting thread. Almost every freaking thunderdrome piece blew my mind away, I can't stress this enough guys, but you have made this lurker extemely happy and inspired, and as a side note, these forums were alot of the reason I applied and am now in my first semester of art school, keep it up, you are doing the world a favor. <end brown-nosing>
November 1st, 2003, 08:00 AM
Hey nice work everyone!! Give the judges a few days to come up with a winner. Joshua I'm sorry I wasn't there to receive your email on time. thanks benz0
November 1st, 2003, 08:55 AM
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who entered for giving all of us a real viewing treat. There's always so much creative power exerted on each of these TDomes, it never ceases to amaze me. I was upset I couldn't enter, but it always seems like I get an actual job or two right around when I would be working on a piece for TDome! Never thought I would say I'd be dissapointed to have someone giving me money for my work, lol. One of these days I won't have to worry about the $$$ so much and I'll have the flexibility to enter more often.
Anyway, although I give props to all who entered some of my favorites were:
But there were a few that really impressed and popped out at me for their overall quality:
Scratched Glass...GREAT MIX OF TIME PERIODS
Dan Milligan...THAT WEAPON DESIGN ALONE SHOULD GET A PRIZE!
You guys blew me away. Thanks so much for your time and effort. Your old and new fans appreciate your work and sacrifice!!!! Another successful TDome! Wow! :D
November 1st, 2003, 10:03 AM
thanks joshua. :)
there are heaps of good pics in there.I really dig the look of tyboogie and sedone's entry this time round.
and burnout's sketches rock :F
but...my guy would own them all!
may the best scribble win.
November 1st, 2003, 10:49 AM
Awesome work all!
So many to name: HardcorePixxX, tyboogie, Gloklund, ELLioT, GhostofMacbeth, AbcArt, cire600, Scratched Glass, Sedone, Prometheus, Chris J. Anderson, MrSmith, kincept, oDD, Dan Milligan, stephen, Rinaldo, Joachim, Jaku, carlo, stevethomas, MindCandyMan, Joshua the James and everyone else who participated!!!
The turnout blew my mind. I don't recall such a wide turnout before with so many great and diverse pieces. So inspirational!
My personal favorites are from bOne, otis and seaminus.
Android, Wes9000, McNallyism, where are your pieces former champs???? Prom, your speed scares me. I really liked the caveman Sean, definitely finish that when u get the chance...
Man, I'm ready for more! I wish we could challenge eatpoo.com again for a rematch for the next contest. I think this forum has an army big enough to do it now. We'd kick ass!!
Chris J. Anderson!
November 1st, 2003, 12:36 PM
AH, some new posts! This thunderdome just keeps getting better!
JOSH THE JAMES! I'm glad you posted, I really didn't think you would, what a suprise! Your character is cool, I like your line quality and designs in the outfit. You really clearified all of your details, thats hilarious that he carries around a Ryoga pig doll. This dudes a real traveler, cool story.
HardcorePixx, your gun Samurai is a walking death machine! Very cool idea. The way you painted it and the detailed specs on his weaponary and armor stats to me seem like he should be in the final Metal Gear game as one of the main antagonists. I would love to see this guy combat in fierce battle.
I see some other samurai's and new thunderdome pieces that look pretty cool. I'm glad that this has been a really big contest this time around.
November 1st, 2003, 12:53 PM
There are so many good pieces!
To me its between Dan Milligan, Kincept, Prom, Otis, Sedone, and hpx.
But I just wanted to say GREAT JOB to Joshuathejames cuz his character is so believable to me.
All of the little knick knacks, he has, and carries with him give him so much history. GREAT JOB EVERYONE!
I didn't enter, cuz I didn't finish my character. I only did the face. Plus I'm not that great of a painter yet. But When I learn the ropes, watch out cuz, theres no stopping me!
November 1st, 2003, 01:09 PM
Hey everyone GREAT turnout. looking at that thread kicked my ass. i'm really glad i participated. and yeah, i have to bow... Dan M. ... wow, is all i'm sayin.... thats definatly the benchmark for work on the next go round. well i had a great time doing this. look foreward to doing it again.
November 1st, 2003, 01:35 PM
My new prediction on who will win....BONE. I think he incorporated all the requirements the best....futuristic themes in his Aztec, good composition, good artistc skills, and he looks extremely fast and dangerous.
November 1st, 2003, 01:40 PM
My favorites are Dan, Dan, Dan, Scratched Glass, Dan, Otis, Dan, Carlo and, uhhh Dan...
After seeing the work posted here, mine looks affected by inexperience and the sleep deprivation that has been plaguing me lately. :D
Fantastic work, I have much to learn but it was a blast and a learning experience, so thank you all. Awesome.
November 1st, 2003, 01:40 PM
HOLY CRAP ON A HOT TIN ROOF
amazing turnout--everyone pat their backs
lukavi--impressive entries--beautifully executed and cool designs on both
Dan milligan--great stuff man. love teh designs of the weapons and the extra effort on the additional drawings. gives us more insight into the character. well done sir
Benzo--very cool designs on both entries. great finishes, and a cool idea for thunderdome--much props to you (nice self portait in the sphinx--hehheh)
mr smith--great native american design--he looks like a serious warrior man--yikes
sedone--loving everything about that piece
cire600--your piece blew me away man--your drawing skills really shine through on this one ...BRAVO..love the fire too
RM--havent seen your stuff in a while--your getting frighteningly good man! well done
Rinaldo--love the color and drawing style
stephen--great concepts--really enjoyed looking at the other pieces you did
November 1st, 2003, 02:40 PM
Here's the problem I have with these contests. Everytime someone posts a new piece I go "why didn't I think of that"or "I gotta learn to paint like that guy". All in all I'm blown away. So much great stuff. I thinks Its more fun to view it as an army rather than singular fighters. OUR ARMY!-
thank you everyone for the kind words.
Some many favs, but a couple I really liked.
sedone- paints like an angel.
November 1st, 2003, 03:19 PM
I totaly do the same thing! I love the variety of styles...Example: what Tyeboogie did. But when I look at what the judges are going to be looking for I wonder if the more expiremental or "loose" pieces will do well. Maybe for one of our next Thunderdomes, we have "most original style" as one of the aspects judges instead of the typical detailed concept work.
I'm all for expirementation!
November 1st, 2003, 04:05 PM
coondoggle--thanks alot. i thought yours was awesome as well. loved the hat..i laughed out loud!!
i actually think yours Otis was probably the best example of merging an ancient cultres armor/design with a post apocalyptic design and technology. there was also something really nice about teh abstract ambigious BG that help place the character in a dark foreboding context
jer MOhler--that is a great finished piece. everything is working really well in it
November 1st, 2003, 04:26 PM
HPX>> YOU RULE!!! Love the samurai.
November 1st, 2003, 10:19 PM
Been lurking and watching these entries come in over the last few days and like a few others have said, been kicking myself for not making an effort to enter something myself. The enthusiasm shown here is infectious and a delight to watch, I don’t want to be a by-stander on the next Thunderdome.
Congrats to all that submitted, the quality of work was outstanding!
Dan Milligan: the composition, technique and energy of painting #2 combined with character developments #1 & #3, gives you the Holy Grail.
Runners up: Sedone, Kincept, Otis, Anderson, and a delightfully quirky painting from Stephen.
Rusty Red Robot

Fantastic work everyone! I really don't envy the jobs of those in the jury, because I would be hard pressed to pick a single piece over the others. Again, I must lament the fact that I didn't have time to enter . . . I was really excited about this, as I have been waiting for a new Thunderdom for a long time. Now, I guess, all I can do is wait for the next one! I hope it's not too far away! It's not about the prize, it's about the glory!
Anyway, again, great turnout, not just in quantity but also in quality. Kudos to all you guys!
November 2nd, 2003, 02:08 AM
A-mazing work guys.
Wow. I am pissed at myself that I was not able to find time to participate, but hopefully next time.
Cire600, Tyboogie, Dan, Joachim, and so many others, such great work.
November 2nd, 2003, 11:27 AM
well, there's uh...LOTS of good work up. Maybe i have a shot at "honorable mention". :)
November 2nd, 2003, 12:00 PM
Some of the concepts work really good as illustrations or paintings whilst other would be awesome game models, or perhaps comic characters. I got several favorites in each category.
Milligan seem to be the common nominator judging from the posts above though, and I agree about the kickassness of his entry. I especially like the club design with the skulls and the face expressions. Very impressive.
November 2nd, 2003, 12:44 PM
I wish all the contestants get disqualified and banned (apart from me) so I can win…
:fruit: <--- evil fruit
November 2nd, 2003, 01:06 PM
actually there was one contestant that got DQ'd. It looked like the person took got the design of his character from a minature that was in a Role Playing Game.
November 2nd, 2003, 01:21 PM
good. one down and only 80 something to go..
November 2nd, 2003, 03:51 PM
O.k, I'm going to be Devil's advocate for a sec. Don't get me wrong, I too love what Dan did, but for a second...did he really show or use any futuristic/ thunderdome technology? All I'm saying is that there is nothing that looks "futuristic" about his character.
Maybe if the judges take this into account many others will have a shot at winning?
Just a thought....Dan you're still my hero.:D
November 2nd, 2003, 04:18 PM
the rules said you could make it futuristic, OR keep it ancient..
November 2nd, 2003, 11:53 PM
November 3rd, 2003, 02:07 AM
I think whatever the judges decide, it will be a bit controversal. People might complain and the winner will feel a bit uneasy.
As I understood it, but I hardly read the rules, the design had to be based of a premidieval cultural archetype, look intimidating, and could have technology that somehow was tweaked to fit the culture.
I personally would have wanted to see more classic 'concept-artish' stuff, like ink+marker, but I guess that technique is being pushed aside by the digital tools we have now.
A few people added extra sheets with poses and stuff and I think that's a big plus.
I had a plan paint one of my characters fighting in all the great wars, tossing romans around, tipping over tanks etc. I never got that far though :(
November 3rd, 2003, 02:14 AM
i wasnt a big fan of the post-apocalyptic thing from the start, and was glad it was dropped.
i think any one of 10 guys could win and it would be cool with me. from a design standpoint, no one is a sure bet.
November 3rd, 2003, 02:53 AM
There are about 5 different pieces that to me, I could see taking first place easily. I wouldn't be suprised if any of them did. Futuristic, ancient, or a combo of both.
November 3rd, 2003, 06:24 AM
I'm assuming the assignment (I was a tad confused by the rules) was not to create an ancient warrior as he/she appeared at the time, but a mutated fantasy warrior based on the original.
I was looking for a combination of good concept, good rendering and last but not least, a good presentation (telling the story). I think one should've approached this as if they were making a pitch to a room full of bored bean counters.
This disqualifies some entries, which is too bad , 'cause there were some pieces that were great renderings in their own right (kincept, Prometheus, otis, coondoggle, Jer Mohler, carlo, Rash, Joachim, Rinaldo, stephen, Scratched Glass, AbcArt, ELLioT).
For the Grand Prix, I'd nominate from the top down, Dan M., HPX, Flint, enigma,, Chris J. Anderson, HordePrime and MrSmith.
November 3rd, 2003, 07:29 AM
I totally disagree with you.. . When I made my viking f. ex. I didn't follow any facts about what they used at the time, except the clichés to make him a viking which I see as fit a viking ...But they didn't walk around with dogs like that, they never had axes bigger than possible to carry, and plaits all around their head, so for me I feel that I exaggerated and beefed up reality ( if this is realism, you've seen too many movies ;) ), but I kept a few of the facts to make him believable. Tell me how this not following the assignment. Seem like some thinks that every thunderdome contest should have mutated zombies with buttloads of guns and weapons sticking out all over if it's anything called exaggeration...which I think is the oposite... what is then the point of changing assignments of the thunderdome each time if everything just has to end up like mutades freaks ?? ANyway, I could be wrong and mine isn't far from the real world to be accepted by the jury, but if this is the case I will not join another one of these contests again.
Fipse, think people have mentioned it allready, but vikings ARE from ancient history, maybe medievil too, but they have been around for a loong time - just wanted to mention it :) search the web about them and you'll see.
Btw, lots of great participant !!! This contest seem to have as many great participants as the game-character compo. More fun when so many show interest :) Good luck to you all!!
Too bad McNallyism that you never finished your great drawing. I think you should have atleast posted the sketch you made, cince it looked so good.
November 3rd, 2003, 07:57 AM
Maybe I didn't explain myself very well. I didn't mean to say you didn't meet the competition requirments. I just thought (ie- my opinion, not the mods) that submissions that included some back story, discriptions, etc (ie-a 'presentation') put themselves out front.
I loved your viking illlustration, but would have liked to have seen a bit of a 'story' around it.
November 3rd, 2003, 08:47 AM
Ok I see what you mean. ..But still I disagree a bit;)
1. If you mean background story in like, the history of the character, like an description were he came from, age, from what time, story etc... this is not something that was mentioned in the original assignment. So imho if this is something that will have a positive effects for the jury, I think the assigment in misleading. Because it was never mentioned as something that should be included.
2. If you mean like the visual development, why the artist chose to draw this and that,....that you should include the concept development, why and how you ended up with your final character design. . this is something that would ofc. be cool if everyone included, but that wasn't either something that was told that people should include. F.ex myself, I did a whole lot of thinking and designing before I ended up with my viking, which I did include on my personal page, but I never thought of including that here, as I never thought the assignment asked for the visual development. SO, to me, if this is something that matters, the assignment as also misleading.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not offended or anything :) ANd, I don't try to say this to talk in favor of my own or any other designs...it's just my opinions about the assignment regarding the text that was written. If the contest was looking for more than just a drawing of a character based on a certain theme, they should have said so.
November 3rd, 2003, 09:02 AM
You're right, Joachim, that wasn't in the original brief, and I don't know if I would have thought to do it, had I submitted. It's just when I saw it on some of the pieces, I thought- 'Of course!'

WoooHooo, that was awesome! It's nice to get your ass kicked once in awhile. The only thing i miss about working in the movie industry is working with a variety of talented individuals and the friendly competition that drives all of us to excel. Thanks for all the amazing artwork guys. Lets do another one right away. I don't care about prizes. I just wanna play.
Dan, I noticed a painting of Thade on your site, did you know I was one of the principle character and costume designers on Planet of the apes. My friend Kazu sculpted Thade. Awesome work Dan. You deserve to win.
November 3rd, 2003, 12:08 PM
I happen to agree with Joachim. the assignment asked for a finished illustration, which for one should never include text. And for one id leave backstory type stuff to an actually writer or developer. Since most of these backstories are like "chosen from his tribe as the greatest warrior he fights to be the greatest champion of all time!" thats pretty cliche and lame.. Let the illustration do its job.
November 3rd, 2003, 12:25 PM
thought the movie was O.K. but LOVED the art and art direction and costume. GREAT JOB Carlo.
all the best
November 3rd, 2003, 12:56 PM
I didn't write a story for the same reason as Scratched Glass. I'm not a writer and I didn't actually read any of the stories ppl posted. For me the pictures does all the talking.
However, adding a bit of text can work as a layout element, if you have a blank space to fill or so. Plus it makes the illustration look more advanced and planned.
Personally I would've liked to make layouts with detail closeups (facial expressions, mini poses, weapons & gear) plus silly comments attached with cute arrows. It would've worked quite well since I had a clean white background, but I decided to paint up a few extra concepts instead (as I started out too late).
November 3rd, 2003, 01:01 PM
One goes to a workshop for a couple of days and all this wonderfull pices come up!
my favs. in no particular order are:
everyone else :chug: it was one hell of a battle! when the dust settles, we will have a winner.
Ty/thanks man, your style has changed a lot lately. your entry works very well as an illustration!
November 3rd, 2003, 02:15 PM
Damn, there's some great work up.
This was my first Thunderdome and I think I understand now what the contest was really asking for. I'm more of an illustrator than a concept artist (though, I would love to move into concept art), and I feel that through this contest, I have a much better idea of what and how concept art should be done. Being that I'm very illustration driven, I tend to worry a whole lot about the entire image and the over all composition of said image. I think that this is one of those times when it's okay to focus and just work on a character design.
Anyway, this was a great competition and I'd be very interested in getting into another right away, even if there aren't any prizes!
Thanks everybody for such great inspiration!
November 3rd, 2003, 02:18 PM
many things will be taken into consideration in the judging process. I can also say (hint) that when posting the finished pieces, what you add as a tagline will not help the piece win. -Mitch
WTFC about the backstory, we are illustrating stories, not writting them.
I also suggest we better start posting more action, facial and animation studies for all our entries next time, considering Dan just set the bar 10 miles higher!
November 3rd, 2003, 02:27 PM
hmm...ok,if it's really more about "just the concepts",then i'll have to keep that in mind the next time.dan hit the nail on the head then i guess.i wondered more about the composition of the overall piece and the design than any studies etc.well,it was fun either way.looking forward to the next one.
November 3rd, 2003, 02:38 PM
I feel I need to apolgize for posting my work. I was having a good time with project and didn't realize presenting my art in such a fashion would upset people. This just happens to be the way I do my job. I'll try to keep your comments in mind for the next one.
November 3rd, 2003, 02:46 PM
when and where do they announce the winner?
November 3rd, 2003, 02:53 PM
Don't apologize, man. I think you hit the nail on the head with the project and hell, you did a great job at that. Everybody had the same opportunity as you, so there's no need to apologize because you decided to approach it in a different manner. I really enjoyed seeing all your sketches, drawings, and studies. In fact, you opened my eyes to what I could have done. I appreciate that.
This, of course, doesn't in any way mean I'm not happy with my piece, fact is, I think it's one of the best coloured pieces I've done, especially digitally and I'm quite proud.
I'm just ready for another go! Heh.
So when's the next contest start?
And Dan, again, no need to apologize for not only a great concept, but a great piece of art. In fact, *I* owe you thanks for letting me see just what I could be doing.
November 3rd, 2003, 03:05 PM
Wow. I've been pouring over all the finished images over the past few days and cannot believe the quality of work in this Thunderdome. I'm glad just to have taken part in an activity filled with such talented people. Congratulations, everyone! So many pieces offer such great insights into the creation of a sucessful image: Kincept's for its amazing fluidity, grace and color; Nimrod's for its ferocity and sense of powerful action; cire600 and carlos each for their amazing painting techniques, tyboogie for gorgeous, intricate abstraction, Dan Milligan for its presentation and smart, thorough, attractive design...the list goes on and on!
P.S. Dan, Never apologize for great work. I agree entirely with JerMohler.
November 3rd, 2003, 03:05 PM
Yikes, I think I need to jump in here (or maybe it would've been better if I'd shut up in the first place).
I wrote my post earlier on and was kind of editing as I went (before I posted) and I think part of what I stated may not have been said very clearly.
What I meant to say is that I liked a certain type of submission. I do not mean in any way my interpretation of the rules was the interpretation of the judges, it was only my opinion on what best solved the problem presented. I'm sure they're thinking I'm full of it.
Also, my term 'disqualifies' is probably a tad strong. I really did like the other stuff....really.
*happy faces all 'round*?
Chris J. Anderson!
November 3rd, 2003, 03:11 PM
After reading all of what some of you have said here about, not writing stories, only illustrating them.....about doing concept art and not illustration and making sure you add different drawings explaining the concept....I agree. When I read the rules it wasn't clear to me, as well as a lot of other artists here judging by what they posted, whether or not we should have posted a more illustrated artwork for this competition, or a more concepted artwork. Yeah this website is called ConceptArt.org but I don't always see concepts posted here, I see a lot of illustrations as well all over the forum, so I was unsure how I should have approached the finish. Like some other people here, I had plans to post concepts as well of my character in different poses, facial expressions, clearly crafted weapons designs markered up, etc etc. But I decided not to because I didn't think it would be important for this competition, again this is because for all the other thunderdomes I remember, and other posts on this site, I've seen a lot of illustrations, as well as concepts so I thought we could do either one, or a combination of both. Had it been more clear to me to do a "conceptual" piece rather than it be more illustrated, I would have concentrated more on the concept. Instead, I tried to explain all that I could in an more illustrative work. Alright enough rambling.
At any rate, if a more conceptual piece is chosen as the winner, I think we all know that Dan Milligan should win, because it is the most conceptually explained post I think in my opinion, and the painted finish is well done in a cool style...nice work. I hope to participate in the next thunderdome. Next time I will make sure I understand the rules more clearly. I think I focused too much on the feel of the character rather than the concept. I'm very glad I competed, this was the most fun in art that I've had in a while, I'm glad thunderdome and concept.org exists. Really gets my adreniline going to do some competetitve art. Hopefully Dan Milligan as well as McNally, Wes9000, Android, Marko, JSweet, etc etc will join next time so we can all have the ULITMATE BATTLE! The next Thunderdome should be really fun, so I hope the judges and creators of the thunderdomes come up with a real fun and hardcore contest.
November 3rd, 2003, 03:37 PM
I have to say this:
Dan>> "DON'T APOLOGIZE for Awesome piece." It's great.
I think the only thing that matter to me or most artists is inspiration from what they see. Nothing else really matter, IS IT? We do it because we love it. NOTHING ELSE. :D :chug:
November 3rd, 2003, 03:38 PM
Your too humble man. You should not be apologizing for such a great job! You had fun with the piece and that is why it turned out so well! If you win, don't feel bad! And PLEASE don't stop posting your work! It's your inspiring work and attitude that will only make the rest of us better.:)
November 3rd, 2003, 03:44 PM
oh yeah,i didn't mean to intimidate you in any way, your piece is superb.i think it's pretty obvious(sorry other guys) that it will win.don't apologize!your piece only makes the competition better and inspires me to do harder next time.:)
November 3rd, 2003, 04:13 PM
Yeah I gotta say it too, you should not feel bad at all Dan, you did a great contribution.... The way you presented it with many drawings etc, was infact very nice. I just wanted to state that I think that if this was the case all a long, we have been a bit mislead, but nor should it be a bad thing, nobody said you shouldn't include this. Your character design was very nice and if you should win it should be because u did a great job of making a nice "work of art" and a "well designed character"....not the fact that you did many studies of him or incuded some storyline or development concept sketches. That was my point.
all in all, this is not because I care who win or not, but it wouldn't hurt if things were a bit more defined for the next contest if certain things are prefered or not within the contest. I'm still a bit uncertain of this page is meant to only be a "concept" art page or "art" in general. But, I just wanna draw and have fun, like everybody else and not care about these things. And I hope next thunderdome contest will be here very soon !!! With a cool task and a LOT of participants. Don't care about the prizes, as long as there are contests :)
on the sideline...
ps! tip if the administrators here find it difficult to find prizes and therefor cannot arrange contests often, you should just add the 1st.2nd & 3rd. winners picture at the top of this page all over so they get some publisity, I'm sure that will make people just as satisfied as getting fancy gadgets etc
...btw wasn't this page about to be updated once ? I remember seeing a screenshot of a very cool new look. Which could fit perfectly with this idea.
November 3rd, 2003, 04:51 PM
Dan-> apologize? what are you talking about??? all this disscussion is because there is so many people green with envy. Me the first.
The rules where clear but there was no need to post a backstory or character development, no prohibition on doing it neither...
November 3rd, 2003, 05:24 PM
Just jumping on the no need to appologize Dan bandwagon .. Your piece was awesome .. Just wish I had more time this month but your pieces nailed the concept I think
November 3rd, 2003, 05:36 PM
thanks for the great comments. I'm sort of new to this "concept art" thing. I'm
just trying to expand my abilities. But more so I'm very much a rookie to these message boards. i.e. my user i.d. is Dan Milligan not some cool alias. I wasn't digging for compliments or anything like that-I just don't what to step on any toes here. I really enjoy these forums, I've learnt alot in a short period of time. I don't what to take CA for granted.
November 3rd, 2003, 05:47 PM
You're no rookie at concept art, you're entry was really good, though I don't really like you're choice of color for the background, think it should have been a bit lighter the character kinda melts in to background.
Still my favourite's Joachims entry, love the coloring job on that. Really makes me wanna change the way I color my pieces (way to comicish, getting a bit tired of that when seing all great art on this site)
Have some concepts that has to be finished this week will probably try doing the color job a bit Joachimish (if you don't mind)
This was my first Thunderdome and I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next one
November 3rd, 2003, 06:09 PM
hey! whose judging this thing anyway? how do i know its not just some random internet noob?:bash:  :chug:
November 3rd, 2003, 07:16 PM
Hey Dan, I wouldn't take the goings-on of a forum too seriously. I thought you put together a smart presentation, and if I were a client or art director or whatnot, I'd be impressed. The entries this time round was great fun to look at, and depending on who judges it, I can definitely see different pieces being chosen as the winner. Each one has its own "cool" factor.
I'm with the others who've said it "bring on the next competition!" :D
November 3rd, 2003, 07:30 PM
No way Dan, don't apologize. Solid painting skills, good concept, and great presentation, just consider the hubub a gold star, man. I learned a lot from yours, as well as many others here in just a couple weeks. I shall incorporate what I ahve learned and come out the better for it, so hell, thanks, and not just to Dan alone.
This was my first real finished digital painting and I am taking copious notes on everyones technique and presentation. I hope we can do another soon, without the post deadline wrangling about rules, please. Everyone came, got hyped participated and came away with a reward, whether you won or not. This was really damn cool. Good job everyone.
November 3rd, 2003, 07:34 PM
You by no means are "new to this concept art thing". You have great work on your website too. Keep posting!!
November 3rd, 2003, 10:09 PM
posted this before under another thread noones seems to check that anymore sooo...
is there any word on 2nd place and 3rd place winnings?
November 3rd, 2003, 10:10 PM
O.K. I feel better.
What I love most about these forums is the incredible variety of style ,ideas and thoughts. Art for the most part is a personal journey- but it's much more rewarding when you make that journey with friends. These forums constantly open my eyes.
Enough with the sappy girlschool bullsh*t, lets spark up another T-dome and kick some ass you motherf*ckers. bring it on!
Peace & love
November 3rd, 2003, 10:11 PM
I'm really impressed with your progression. I'm happy for you.
I really dig the overall composition of the page. I like what you have but, I think if you researched a bit more and put some more authentic details in the leg pad and even in the cool gun/sword this piece would be reallly nice. Perhaps you still should, for your portfolio.
Hey, I think the basic design of this is basic but pretty darn cool. I would almost like to have seen some asymmetry in the shin pads.
I think the drawing in this one is its strongest aspect. Its nice and fresh. I think you would really benefit from some life painting, it will great improve your digital paint.
Those patches on her shield are funny. You should download this Loomis PDF it should help you out http://saveloomis.org/ good luck.
I like his necklace. He seems strictly historical, I would of like to see you explore more of a design that is of more your own.
I really like both these pieces! Beautiful mood. But at the same time I wish they were a bit less illustrative. I would of liked to see more of the design.
I really like his design. Almost funny looking.
Cool, creepy design. I would of like to see some parts a bit more crisp.
Hey, just freekin lovely designs in your pieces! I would love to see you create more form with the paint. It would really make your character stand out and give even more beauty to the concept.
There are some really cool things with the paint. I wish you would have put more of your own into the outfit. Then I feel its would be really really cool.
I love that subtle griffin on the sword.
Really cool design of the page. I really wish it was full body.
Man. This could be reallly cool if you would finish it up with some crisp edge relationships. The mood, colour and design is there..basic but cool..Finish it! Cool stuff.
This is damn cool. Some of the paint gets a bit busy and I would love to see the rest of the character. Great work. Coool style, try and crispin things up I think that would be a good level for your work.
Cool mood, Cool chest plat, Cool ram on his wrist! I wish his leg had such character.
What can I say. I've been a nerdy Joachim fan for quite some time. I love the finish! But I wish there was something about this character to make him more unique. The big ax and horns are cool...
This almost seems strictly historical. Because the overall design, mood and colour is very nice I think with some more designy elements...perhaps invented pieces of armor here and there or an extra invent weapon...I think that would take this piece to the next level. Don't be afraid to crispin up even more of those edges. Nice work.
Very cool. It makes me laugh. I think by making the face a mask instead of a creature your could have stuck more to the curriculum and perhaps even a more interesting character. I would love to see some human eyes subtly suggested in the mouth as if he was trying to hide the fact its a mask...
I wish you would have had a tighter line drawing. From what I see the design could be pretty cool.
That is an Awesome helmet!
Man! I wish you would have went all out. I am definitely a nerdy Rinaldo fan boy.
I love the mood of this. Did you design the Helmet? Cuz its pretty darn cool. I would of even like to see a bit more structural form created in the upper region. I love how the detail fades to the bottom.
Neat idea I never seen that before. You may want to also check this link... http://saveloomis.org/ The figure drawing book can help you out..good luck...
Wow there is some pretty neat things happening with the paint. I'm happy to see that things are clarified. The heated back pack is cool.
Yo, I love the two weapons, though I really wish there was something that cool in his costume. Very fun illustration.
I like the wolf on the shield. I would even like to see the wolf more engaging..perhaps an action pose.
I think it's cool that you got the design across in an illustration. Once again I wish it wasn't so strictly historical. Nice finish.
Nice pose. I wish the edges were more crisp in the focal areas.
This guy would beat some serious arse!
I would have to say you have the best example of Design, nice pose, and clarity. The design is really well done because not only does it stay true to the culture but it has some definite invented element yet stilll staying true to Egypt. Great work. I would love to see you win. .....btw DAMN cool shield!
I found it hard to figure what to say about this piece. It very much seems like a historical samurai. I do dig that jaw plate.
Cool pose, Cool helmet, cool bird on the knee. Cooooll painter FX brush. ;P
I like those things sticking out around his back.
November 3rd, 2003, 10:12 PM
This is Hilarious! His hat is damn funny! It looks like he got in from a Japanese fast food place.
I love the paint on this guy. I love the upper portion of this guy. Man, with such a cool paint I would of loved to see a more out of the ordinary basic shaping of the native American garment.
Is that an energy shield? Very cool idea.
I like the crazy looking bug mask. Also the cool glowing Celtic sword!
Hey Ted, this has a great feel to it. I wish there was more attention put into the drawing. With more precise structure this piece would utterly own...
Chris J. Anderson!-
You already know what I think. The best is yet to come. And then the world will weep with joy...
I like the munchkin look.
Thats a hell of a club.
Cool a$$ Helmet.
Man that is a bunch of terrifying flags. Nightmares NIGHTMARES!
I really dig his shoulder guard and straps.
I like the top of the staff and the eagle on the back is a nice touch.
I love the lighting and mood. I think thats the part of digital painting that you have down. Since you do have it down you should reallly nail down your form and structure. Even if its not a stylistic thing you'd like to do I still think it would greatly improve you're already good work. Its always nice to have more up the sleeve.
Mr. QuickPaint! ...I think its obvious the best design is in the mask of the last character. Man! I really wish you would have implemented that into the rest of the character.
I like the basicness of this design. I think it would be even better without the horse body. A real elegant womanly figure with a mysterious mask and a build that demands respect.
Hey Sedone, Of course I love this as a painting. You're soo good at what you do I think its time to take your work to the next level. I think you would really benefit from some anatomical study. Once you're there I don't think you'll be so reluctant to put the same level of detail in the rest of the figure as you do in the faces(which is beautiful btw). Don't worry I'm not just speaking empty words. I am also taking the same actions with my work.
With a line drawing this piece could be cool.
I love that fish. Time to sound like a broken record..I would also love to see a full body. With the nice feel it just makes me want the rest.
I like the paint and the head. I would like to see you explore more of the opposite colour...like some neutral greens or neutral green/blues within the appropriate areas of the reds. Very cool.
I really really like the accordion shaping in the armor.
Very scary. That retractable arm is just cool.
Cool stylized armor. I could be wrong but didn't I see this in one of your old posts? ;P
I'm sorry. I can't see anything.
That bird is awesome. I dig the basic shaping of this guy. Those pigs are funny.
This style is soo neat that I wish there was a bit more actual form to distinguish the structure.
The piece is a bit hard to make out but, I love his face. Yo, if you really flush this out it could be a great portfolio piece. Please finish it.
I really like the design of the armor. I'm not to fond of some of the colour play. The head is creepy and cool.
Ultra Insane Axes! You should really crispin this up..it'll be great!
Those face details are neat. I like the fact that they are not just flat tattoos but, have some mass.
That's cool how that hook is connected to his wrist.
My favorite aspect of this is the old Japanese style of overall shaping of the figure.
That chest armor is very cool.
Now thats a design! Unfortunately it will be overlooked because of the rendering. Have you had any painting classes? Good work. (thats not supposed to sound mean)
Very neat wrist weapon.
Hey, I think the design of the wrist and the feather are soo cool, I would really like to see more of it in the rest of the design. Thats funny that no one has said anything about your presentation...
Pretty paint. Hilarious chest.
It reminds me of the first Turtles movie when April said "what, am I behind on my Sony payments?" when the ninjas met up with her in the subway.. too funny...
Jooshhuuaa the James. Youuuu fool. How DARE you judge!? You turned in an unfinished painting and you have nnnoo right to open your mouth! You did Not budget your time and you will SUFFER!!!!
btw everyone... I just got my Matrix tickets ;)

SEDONE... I'm with the others who've said it "bring on the next competition!"
YES!!! I can hear the tidal wave of a hardcore thunderdome roaring our way. Lets PREPARE FO BATTLE!! BLAAAHAHAHAHA!!!! BRING IT!!
November 4th, 2003, 12:28 AM
Heh heh... hell ya
November 4th, 2003, 07:37 AM
I hear that! This was my second Thunderdome and I had an absolute blast! I can't wait for the next. The quality of art here is truly amazing and I'm very happy that I was able to participate with such talented people.
November 4th, 2003, 09:00 AM
You rock! Thank you for your time you took to give some feedback. Not only for those who will propably win, but also to us beginners. It's sometimes frustrating to participate 'cause you know your piece have no chance and nobody pays attention to it. But you did! So you're the man! Your piece is very nice. Not very scary fighter, but well done. I like those details like toes under water. Good luck to you and everybody else.
Hazart - wannabe artist!

I will also take tha oppurtunity to thank JOSHUATHEJAMES for taking time and comment the pictures
It was greatly appreciated!
November 4th, 2003, 10:26 AM
Josh, tremendous job on those critiques! As for your comments to me, I definitely appreciate the insight, and those are things which I consciously try to work on. I waited till the last minute to work on my piece, and when a deadline is tight you inevitably fall back on the things you know about. For a while now I've been working on giving my work the surface "shine" it needs to sell, but I think it's time for me to go back to basics and do some studies and life drawings. Thanks for the comments!
November 4th, 2003, 10:35 AM
Great job and thanks.
Sedone- I personally love the loosness and energy in your piece- Sometime its whats not there that makes a piece sing.

i've seen that my more "comic book" type of work has a cartoon feel to it. i'm trying to avoid this (like the plague, i might add) and move into a more fine art look. We just did an assignment for Illustration that had to be a total oil painting. The results were hopeful and i'm hoping that i can move it into digital media.
Thanks for the comments, it's greatly appreciated. This was a great thunderdome folks, lotta love in this forum. Can't wait for the next one. :)
November 4th, 2003, 01:25 PM

November 4th, 2003, 01:47 PM
Howbout this subject for the next Thunderdome. We assigned this one to our concept art students, create Giant Robots using WWII technology. The robot had to represent a specific country involved in the conflict.
November 4th, 2003, 02:50 PM
I like the sound of that.
Where do you work carlo? Why no homepage?
November 4th, 2003, 03:00 PM
Hey...that idea is uber cool Carlo!
I wish jason hears this!
Very nice idea...
November 4th, 2003, 03:07 PM
Hey I like that idea a lot ! Gonna start scribblin and photoresearchin whether it becomes an official thunderdome or not.
November 4th, 2003, 03:10 PM
thats a cool idea carlo. I dont think there's been a thunderdome just for robots..... though some have allowed robots among other things like the T3 and monster contests.
Your idea reminds me of Jae Lee's current Transformers/ GI Joe comic series. All the transformers have been redesigned to fit to WW2 era.
I still want to have another round with EatPoo.com. CA lost to them last year, and thats just f#%^ed up! We'd kick there ass now, axis vs allies or whatever!!
Maybe one site could be allies, the other axis. Just an idea, but its kind of weird to be nostalgic about past wars
November 4th, 2003, 03:40 PM
For a millisecond I almost had a tear in my eye....But then I planted my feet on the ground and had to Crush a wall just to make sure I was still a man.
Before I posted it I didn't realize how many people actually entered... About 75!! wow...
Cool new thunderdome idea...I bet Sean would llove that.
November 4th, 2003, 04:41 PM
carlo--man that's a great idea. I hope that's the subject of the next T-dome. Someone inform the administration!
And what is this business with the Eatpoo forum? We lost?
Screw that. I say lets get mangle them worse than a pack of dogs on a three legged cat.
Chris J. Anderson!
November 4th, 2003, 05:27 PM
Benzo, I had forgotten that CA battled against Eatpoo. I agree I think it'd be fun to have another round. Especially since so many artists may join on both sides. I missed out the last time.
November 4th, 2003, 06:28 PM
Carlo>> I am down!!!! Great idea!!!
November 4th, 2003, 07:00 PM
JOSHUA>> Yep :D :chug:
November 4th, 2003, 07:00 PM
Awesome idea Carlo, I just hope there isn't a long delay before the next Tdome.
November 4th, 2003, 07:07 PM
Don't even get me started on robots! I just finished this game Metal Arms where I drew robots for over a year! ..It will be out this November. Go to www.metalarms.com for more info. :crosseyed
November 4th, 2003, 07:16 PM
haha, sorry otis! i bet you're sick of them then. maybe the theme can be more open.
like secret weapons of WW2... there are plenty of games out there now sporting this theme now. then entries can be anything from robots, vehicles, to super soldiers, whatever......... the arc (had to say it)
btw- the game looks very cool! maybe your studio can donate one for the next td prize?
November 4th, 2003, 07:32 PM
re: concept vs illustration. the breif was specificaly for a single shot I thought. can't really read it any other way.
I also think you will find that differet situations will require different aproaches in real world production. sometimes you want a nice polished illustration to show the guys in suits who pay the rent. others you might only need small scribbles to form visual communication between art savy team mates. it all depends. I think a lot of the time people just want something that looks cool. the development is more of interest to people like us and for working out what the art director (or whoever) wants.
and it would be a rare situation in which the artist would be writing copy for a pitch doc or such. or even making up the character for that matter ;)
thats just from my limmited exp tho.
and things change depending what studio it is.

I have worked in the movie industry for rick baker, ILM, Stan winston and others. I currently work @ Blizzard entertainment.
November 5th, 2003, 12:17 AM
Is there a way you could make the T-Dome gallery sticky until the next battle?
November 5th, 2003, 01:17 AM
thanks joshua, yea i did design the mask, im glad you liked it! :)
November 5th, 2003, 02:52 AM

November 6th, 2003, 04:51 AM
....Just a small note to say how much I enjoyed Thunderdome 6!
And a big 'Thank You' to JOSHUATHEJAMES, for his comments, I personally was chuffed man!
November 6th, 2003, 11:50 AM
Joshua, thanks for your time you spend each picture!
"The piece is a bit hard to make out but, I love his face. Yo, if you really flush this out it could be a great portfolio piece. Please finish it."
for me its finished, this doesnt mean perfect, but it reaches its personal deadline ...
Well, i agree with your critique, many people gave me the same(hard to make out), but i dont really know how to handle it best - i think if i restart to paint on it i couldnt say when its really finished and would over-paint it.
I think i could better start a new image(i already did ^^) and leave this as my thunderdome-participation.
November 6th, 2003, 05:04 PM
just wanted to thank you for the great effort you did on critizising every single pic - even my humble contribution.
That was a great piece of action! (if this is the right way to say it in english)
