The crowd is the true ruler of Thunderdome. When a gladiator warrior falls to the victor, the crowd screams to chear on the fallen warriors' fate, using "pollice verso", or turned thumb.
The final pieces are posted in a separate thread to use as a gallery.
Post your comments on the final pieces for Thunderdome 6 here!
Good luck to all who enter; the hour draws near.

Dan , when are you going to put up your masterpiece?? Guys like you raise the bar way too high.
antihero
October 30th, 2003, 02:10 AM
Yep, the rules read
The warrior can be male or female. Human or non-human, but must be independant (they can wipe their own ass), mortal, and have at least the intelligence of a human.
Anyways, finally thats for the judges to decide. Because the rules also read:
As long as they survive in the Thunderdome, they don't decline
So that means they are, somehow, all immortal. If they can't die from time, they can at least die from a blade... ;)
My faves are the Hun and the rubygenesis' Centaur.

I like the Defender of Christianity, but this piece is breaking the rules. It's not an ancient civilization, and it's in the middle ages. Mitch, how are these types of pieces going to be judged? I have a feeling there will be more of these from the Middle Ages.
I mean, if these can still win, then we should just change the rules all together.
mcotie
October 30th, 2003, 11:59 AM
many things will be taken into consideration in the judging process. I can also say (hint) that when posting the finished pieces, what you add as a tagline will not help the piece win.
most importantly what the judge will be looking at:
1) artistic skill
2) sticking with the descriptions
3) presentation of the character
4) can the character kick some ass in the ring

Thanks endregan,
It's definitely an advantage to count Jon and Kevin among my friends. I do alot of really exaggerated stuff for work and so when Kevin visited me and brought his designs for 'Call Of Duty' i began to itch to do a something realistic and historically accurate, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to do so. I approached it like an illustration assignment from national geographic because i figured most everyone would be designing in a style more appropriate for a videogame.
I really appreciate your compliment, high praise considering the competition.

Lukavi: Awsome persian, love his armour design, escpecially his shoulders.
Carlo: Mad skillz, that's all I can say.
Rubygenesis: Damn, YOur Centaur turned out awsome, very powerfull and agile looking.
R_m: Great composition. Lots of emotion.

There are so many great pictures I´m quite humbled to even trying to participate ...
My personal favourite is Kincepts picture and the work of Dan. Chris Andersons is great, too - it would be so hard to judge between them.
The executions of the vikings of Joachim and JerMohler would normally would put them in the first row of the favourite pieces, too, but I personally think they´ve missed the point by taking a medieval culture.
Anyway a great Thunderdome and the first one I tried to participate. Kudos to all the brave fighters and artists around!

This is great, everyones art is fantastic...
inspiring thread!
My five favorites so far, I tried to pic three, but couldn´t :)
HordePrime - Pharoah Warlord
Love the coloring and the lineart, skinny, but still strong and evil...
Joachim - Viking
The coloring is .... Wonderful, love the wolves!
Dan Milligan - Maori
Great art, great contribution, great entry... Inspiring
JerMohler - Viking Warrior
...Loved the lineart in the WIP, the snow is nice, and the details on the viking is great
Otis - Roman
The color and the light makes this futuristic roman to the top.
So far, I put my money on Dan Milligans Maori for the great art and how he presented the stuff.
Edit
The executions of the vikings of Joachim and JerMohler would normally would put them in the first row of the favourite pieces, too, but I personally think they´ve missed the point by taking a medieval culture
The vikings was before the medieval culture. The Viking era "started" around year 795.

Y'know,
I looked around quite a bit when researching my ancient civilization and I've listened to what everybody on the board has said about the "correct medieval time" and I've come to the conclusion that nobody really knows a dang thing.
There are a variety of opinions when the "Medieval" times rolled around and what it'll come down to is what the moderators think.
That said, it's of my opinion that the Vikings were pre-medieval. The vikings were raiding along the costs of northern Europe as early as 410 AD. They began as a mix of Saxon and Pictish and were later known as the Vikings.
If it would be more to the point to switch my race over to Saxon, that's fine and I'll do that. Either way, I do believe that you can consider my character design from before the middle ages.
But, like everything, it's relative. It'll all come down to what the moderators think.

Always cool work from you dude. I know I said I wasn't gonna do one, last Friday my girlfriend basically told me that if I didn't she would drop kick me with a flying lotus kick to my neck.
Prom, my favorite from yours is the guy holding the chopped off head. Your painting style and character ideas are great. Good stuff.
Kincept, I like your drawing and color style for this. The drawing has such movement, the pose has life, and I like your colors a lot.
Dan Milligan, wow dude, you did so much work, you really brought your character to life! Awsome concept!
Bone, your character makes me want to use him in the ultimate castlevannia game ever. I can totally see how he would jump around and fight the toughest battles.
Joachim, nice work, nice movement through out your illustration! That guy has a tough look on his face.
Ted (Seaminus), that guys evil!
Rinaldo, Stephen, Odd, Benzo, Coondoggle, MrSmith, Otis so many others, EXCELLENT! I'm glad so many people joined the competition!!

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who entered for giving all of us a real viewing treat. There's always so much creative power exerted on each of these TDomes, it never ceases to amaze me. I was upset I couldn't enter, but it always seems like I get an actual job or two right around when I would be working on a piece for TDome! Never thought I would say I'd be dissapointed to have someone giving me money for my work, lol. One of these days I won't have to worry about the $$$ so much and I'll have the flexibility to enter more often.
Anyway, although I give props to all who entered some of my favorites were:

Kincept
Coondoggle
Rinaldo
But there were a few that really impressed and popped out at me for their overall quality:

JOSH THE JAMES! I'm glad you posted, I really didn't think you would, what a suprise! Your character is cool, I like your line quality and designs in the outfit. You really clearified all of your details, thats hilarious that he carries around a Ryoga pig doll. This dudes a real traveler, cool story.
HardcorePixx, your gun Samurai is a walking death machine! Very cool idea. The way you painted it and the detailed specs on his weaponary and armor stats to me seem like he should be in the final Metal Gear game as one of the main antagonists. I would love to see this guy combat in fierce battle.
I see some other samurai's and new thunderdome pieces that look pretty cool. I'm glad that this has been a really big contest this time around.

Here's the problem I have with these contests. Everytime someone posts a new piece I go "why didn't I think of that"or "I gotta learn to paint like that guy". All in all I'm blown away. So much great stuff. I thinks Its more fun to view it as an army rather than singular fighters. OUR ARMY!-
thank you everyone for the kind words.

Some many favs, but a couple I really liked.
sedone- paints like an angel.
Rinaldo-wonderful style.

Dan,
I totaly do the same thing! I love the variety of styles...Example: what Tyeboogie did. But when I look at what the judges are going to be looking for I wonder if the more expiremental or "loose" pieces will do well. Maybe for one of our next Thunderdomes, we have "most original style" as one of the aspects judges instead of the typical detailed concept work.
I'm all for expirementation!

coondoggle--thanks alot. i thought yours was awesome as well. loved the hat..i laughed out loud!!
thanks OTIS
i actually think yours Otis was probably the best example of merging an ancient cultres armor/design with a post apocalyptic design and technology. there was also something really nice about teh abstract ambigious BG that help place the character in a dark foreboding context
jer MOhler--that is a great finished piece. everything is working really well in it

Been lurking and watching these entries come in over the last few days and like a few others have said, been kicking myself for not making an effort to enter something myself. The enthusiasm shown here is infectious and a delight to watch, I don’t want to be a by-stander on the next Thunderdome.
Congrats to all that submitted, the quality of work was outstanding!
My favs:
Dan Milligan: the composition, technique and energy of painting #2 combined with character developments #1 & #3, gives you the Holy Grail.
Runners up: Sedone, Kincept, Otis, Anderson, and a delightfully quirky painting from Stephen.

Fantastic work everyone! I really don't envy the jobs of those in the jury, because I would be hard pressed to pick a single piece over the others. Again, I must lament the fact that I didn't have time to enter . . . I was really excited about this, as I have been waiting for a new Thunderdom for a long time. Now, I guess, all I can do is wait for the next one! I hope it's not too far away! It's not about the prize, it's about the glory!
Anyway, again, great turnout, not just in quantity but also in quality. Kudos to all you guys!

Some of the concepts work really good as illustrations or paintings whilst other would be awesome game models, or perhaps comic characters. I got several favorites in each category.
Milligan seem to be the common nominator judging from the posts above though, and I agree about the kickassness of his entry. I especially like the club design with the skulls and the face expressions. Very impressive.

O.k, I'm going to be Devil's advocate for a sec. Don't get me wrong, I too love what Dan did, but for a second...did he really show or use any futuristic/ thunderdome technology? All I'm saying is that there is nothing that looks "futuristic" about his character.
Maybe if the judges take this into account many others will have a shot at winning?
Just a thought....Dan you're still my hero.:D

I think whatever the judges decide, it will be a bit controversal. People might complain and the winner will feel a bit uneasy.
As I understood it, but I hardly read the rules, the design had to be based of a premidieval cultural archetype, look intimidating, and could have technology that somehow was tweaked to fit the culture.
I personally would have wanted to see more classic 'concept-artish' stuff, like ink+marker, but I guess that technique is being pushed aside by the digital tools we have now.
A few people added extra sheets with poses and stuff and I think that's a big plus.
I had a plan paint one of my characters fighting in all the great wars, tossing romans around, tipping over tanks etc. I never got that far though :(

There are about 5 different pieces that to me, I could see taking first place easily. I wouldn't be suprised if any of them did. Futuristic, ancient, or a combo of both.

November 3rd, 2003, 06:24 AM
I'm assuming the assignment (I was a tad confused by the rules) was not to create an ancient warrior as he/she appeared at the time, but a mutated fantasy warrior based on the original.
I was looking for a combination of good concept, good rendering and last but not least, a good presentation (telling the story). I think one should've approached this as if they were making a pitch to a room full of bored bean counters.
This disqualifies some entries, which is too bad , 'cause there were some pieces that were great renderings in their own right (kincept, Prometheus, otis, coondoggle, Jer Mohler, carlo, Rash, Joachim, Rinaldo, stephen, Scratched Glass, AbcArt, ELLioT).
For the Grand Prix, I'd nominate from the top down, Dan M., HPX, Flint, enigma,, Chris J. Anderson, HordePrime and MrSmith.
Cheers,
M.

MGH,
I totally disagree with you.. . When I made my viking f. ex. I didn't follow any facts about what they used at the time, except the clichés to make him a viking which I see as fit a viking ...But they didn't walk around with dogs like that, they never had axes bigger than possible to carry, and plaits all around their head, so for me I feel that I exaggerated and beefed up reality ( if this is realism, you've seen too many movies ;) ), but I kept a few of the facts to make him believable. Tell me how this not following the assignment. Seem like some thinks that every thunderdome contest should have mutated zombies with buttloads of guns and weapons sticking out all over if it's anything called exaggeration...which I think is the oposite... what is then the point of changing assignments of the thunderdome each time if everything just has to end up like mutades freaks ?? ANyway, I could be wrong and mine isn't far from the real world to be accepted by the jury, but if this is the case I will not join another one of these contests again.
Fipse, think people have mentioned it allready, but vikings ARE from ancient history, maybe medievil too, but they have been around for a loong time - just wanted to mention it :) search the web about them and you'll see.
Btw, lots of great participant !!! This contest seem to have as many great participants as the game-character compo. More fun when so many show interest :) Good luck to you all!!
Too bad McNallyism that you never finished your great drawing. I think you should have atleast posted the sketch you made, cince it looked so good.

Hi Joachim
Maybe I didn't explain myself very well. I didn't mean to say you didn't meet the competition requirments. I just thought (ie- my opinion, not the mods) that submissions that included some back story, discriptions, etc (ie-a 'presentation') put themselves out front.
I loved your viking illlustration, but would have liked to have seen a bit of a 'story' around it.
Cheers,
M
Joachim
November 3rd, 2003, 08:47 AM
MGH,
Ok I see what you mean. ..But still I disagree a bit;)
1. If you mean background story in like, the history of the character, like an description were he came from, age, from what time, story etc... this is not something that was mentioned in the original assignment. So imho if this is something that will have a positive effects for the jury, I think the assigment in misleading. Because it was never mentioned as something that should be included.
2. If you mean like the visual development, why the artist chose to draw this and that,....that you should include the concept development, why and how you ended up with your final character design. . this is something that would ofc. be cool if everyone included, but that wasn't either something that was told that people should include. F.ex myself, I did a whole lot of thinking and designing before I ended up with my viking, which I did include on my personal page, but I never thought of including that here, as I never thought the assignment asked for the visual development. SO, to me, if this is something that matters, the assignment as also misleading.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not offended or anything :) ANd, I don't try to say this to talk in favor of my own or any other designs...it's just my opinions about the assignment regarding the text that was written. If the contest was looking for more than just a drawing of a character based on a certain theme, they should have said so.
MGH
November 3rd, 2003, 09:02 AM
You're right, Joachim, that wasn't in the original brief, and I don't know if I would have thought to do it, had I submitted. It's just when I saw it on some of the pieces, I thought- 'Of course!'

I happen to agree with Joachim. the assignment asked for a finished illustration, which for one should never include text. And for one id leave backstory type stuff to an actually writer or developer. Since most of these backstories are like "chosen from his tribe as the greatest warrior he fights to be the greatest champion of all time!" thats pretty cliche and lame.. Let the illustration do its job.

I didn't write a story for the same reason as Scratched Glass. I'm not a writer and I didn't actually read any of the stories ppl posted. For me the pictures does all the talking.
However, adding a bit of text can work as a layout element, if you have a blank space to fill or so. Plus it makes the illustration look more advanced and planned.
Personally I would've liked to make layouts with detail closeups (facial expressions, mini poses, weapons & gear) plus silly comments attached with cute arrows. It would've worked quite well since I had a clean white background, but I decided to paint up a few extra concepts instead (as I started out too late).

Damn, there's some great work up.
This was my first Thunderdome and I think I understand now what the contest was really asking for. I'm more of an illustrator than a concept artist (though, I would love to move into concept art), and I feel that through this contest, I have a much better idea of what and how concept art should be done. Being that I'm very illustration driven, I tend to worry a whole lot about the entire image and the over all composition of said image. I think that this is one of those times when it's okay to focus and just work on a character design.
Anyway, this was a great competition and I'd be very interested in getting into another right away, even if there aren't any prizes!
Thanks everybody for such great inspiration!

many things will be taken into consideration in the judging process. I can also say (hint) that when posting the finished pieces, what you add as a tagline will not help the piece win. -Mitch
WTFC about the backstory, we are illustrating stories, not writting them.
I also suggest we better start posting more action, facial and animation studies for all our entries next time, considering Dan just set the bar 10 miles higher!

Hey Dan,
Don't apologize, man. I think you hit the nail on the head with the project and hell, you did a great job at that. Everybody had the same opportunity as you, so there's no need to apologize because you decided to approach it in a different manner. I really enjoyed seeing all your sketches, drawings, and studies. In fact, you opened my eyes to what I could have done. I appreciate that.
This, of course, doesn't in any way mean I'm not happy with my piece, fact is, I think it's one of the best coloured pieces I've done, especially digitally and I'm quite proud.
I'm just ready for another go! Heh.
So when's the next contest start?
And Dan, again, no need to apologize for not only a great concept, but a great piece of art. In fact, *I* owe you thanks for letting me see just what I could be doing.
So thanks.

I'm glad just to have taken part in an activity filled with such talented people. Congratulations, everyone! So many pieces offer such great insights into the creation of a sucessful image: Kincept's for its amazing fluidity, grace and color; Nimrod's for its ferocity and sense of powerful action; cire600 and carlos each for their amazing painting techniques, tyboogie for gorgeous, intricate abstraction, Dan Milligan for its presentation and smart, thorough, attractive design...the list goes on and on!

Yikes, I think I need to jump in here (or maybe it would've been better if I'd shut up in the first place).
I wrote my post earlier on and was kind of editing as I went (before I posted) and I think part of what I stated may not have been said very clearly.
What I meant to say is that I liked a certain type of submission. I do not mean in any way my interpretation of the rules was the interpretation of the judges, it was only my opinion on what best solved the problem presented. I'm sure they're thinking I'm full of it.
Also, my term 'disqualifies' is probably a tad strong. I really did like the other stuff....really.
*happy faces all 'round*?

After reading all of what some of you have said here about, not writing stories, only illustrating them.....about doing concept art and not illustration and making sure you add different drawings explaining the concept....I agree. When I read the rules it wasn't clear to me, as well as a lot of other artists here judging by what they posted, whether or not we should have posted a more illustrated artwork for this competition, or a more concepted artwork. Yeah this website is called ConceptArt.org but I don't always see concepts posted here, I see a lot of illustrations as well all over the forum, so I was unsure how I should have approached the finish. Like some other people here, I had plans to post concepts as well of my character in different poses, facial expressions, clearly crafted weapons designs markered up, etc etc. But I decided not to because I didn't think it would be important for this competition, again this is because for all the other thunderdomes I remember, and other posts on this site, I've seen a lot of illustrations, as well as concepts so I thought we could do either one, or a combination of both. Had it been more clear to me to do a "conceptual" piece rather than it be more illustrated, I would have concentrated more on the concept. Instead, I tried to explain all that I could in an more illustrative work. Alright enough rambling.
At any rate, if a more conceptual piece is chosen as the winner, I think we all know that Dan Milligan should win, because it is the most conceptually explained post I think in my opinion, and the painted finish is well done in a cool style...nice work. I hope to participate in the next thunderdome. Next time I will make sure I understand the rules more clearly. I think I focused too much on the feel of the character rather than the concept. I'm very glad I competed, this was the most fun in art that I've had in a while, I'm glad thunderdome and concept.org exists. Really gets my adreniline going to do some competetitve art. Hopefully Dan Milligan as well as McNally, Wes9000, Android, Marko, JSweet, etc etc will join next time so we can all have the ULITMATE BATTLE! The next Thunderdome should be really fun, so I hope the judges and creators of the thunderdomes come up with a real fun and hardcore contest.

Yeah I gotta say it too, you should not feel bad at all Dan, you did a great contribution.... The way you presented it with many drawings etc, was infact very nice. I just wanted to state that I think that if this was the case all a long, we have been a bit mislead, but nor should it be a bad thing, nobody said you shouldn't include this. Your character design was very nice and if you should win it should be because u did a great job of making a nice "work of art" and a "well designed character"....not the fact that you did many studies of him or incuded some storyline or development concept sketches. That was my point.
all in all, this is not because I care who win or not, but it wouldn't hurt if things were a bit more defined for the next contest if certain things are prefered or not within the contest. I'm still a bit uncertain of this page is meant to only be a "concept" art page or "art" in general. But, I just wanna draw and have fun, like everybody else and not care about these things. And I hope next thunderdome contest will be here very soon !!! With a cool task and a LOT of participants. Don't care about the prizes, as long as there are contests :)
on the sideline...
ps! tip if the administrators here find it difficult to find prizes and therefor cannot arrange contests often, you should just add the 1st.2nd & 3rd. winners picture at the top of this page all over so they get some publisity, I'm sure that will make people just as satisfied as getting fancy gadgets etc
...btw wasn't this page about to be updated once ? I remember seeing a screenshot of a very cool new look. Which could fit perfectly with this idea.

Hey Dan
You're no rookie at concept art, you're entry was really good, though I don't really like you're choice of color for the background, think it should have been a bit lighter the character kinda melts in to background.
Still my favourite's Joachims entry, love the coloring job on that. Really makes me wanna change the way I color my pieces (way to comicish, getting a bit tired of that when seing all great art on this site)
Have some concepts that has to be finished this week will probably try doing the color job a bit Joachimish (if you don't mind)

MindCandyMan -
I'm really impressed with your progression. I'm happy for you.
bOne-
I really dig the overall composition of the page. I like what you have but, I think if you researched a bit more and put some more authentic details in the leg pad and even in the cool gun/sword this piece would be reallly nice. Perhaps you still should, for your portfolio.
JoShuA-
Hey, I think the basic design of this is basic but pretty darn cool. I would almost like to have seen some asymmetry in the shin pads.
HordePrime-
I think the drawing in this one is its strongest aspect. Its nice and fresh. I think you would really benefit from some life painting, it will great improve your digital paint.
Payback-
Those patches on her shield are funny. You should download this Loomis PDF it should help you out http://saveloomis.org/ good luck.
bluesliver-
I like his necklace. He seems strictly historical, I would of like to see you explore more of a design that is of more your own.
stevethomas-
I really like both these pieces! Beautiful mood. But at the same time I wish they were a bit less illustrative. I would of liked to see more of the design.
Nucleardan-
I really like his design. Almost funny looking.
pibb991-
Cool, creepy design. I would of like to see some parts a bit more crisp.
lukavi-
Hey, just freekin lovely designs in your pieces! I would love to see you create more form with the paint. It would really make your character stand out and give even more beauty to the concept.
carlo-
There are some really cool things with the paint. I wish you would have put more of your own into the outfit. Then I feel its would be really really cool.
rubygenesis-
I love that subtle griffin on the sword.
darkcult-
Really cool design of the page. I really wish it was full body.
Rash Overdrive-
Man. This could be reallly cool if you would finish it up with some crisp edge relationships. The mood, colour and design is there..basic but cool..Finish it! Cool stuff.
R_M-
This is damn cool. Some of the paint gets a bit busy and I would love to see the rest of the character. Great work. Coool style, try and crispin things up I think that would be a good level for your work.
Jaku-
Cool mood, Cool chest plat, Cool ram on his wrist! I wish his leg had such character.
Joachim-
What can I say. I've been a nerdy Joachim fan for quite some time. I love the finish! But I wish there was something about this character to make him more unique. The big ax and horns are cool...
kyle-
This almost seems strictly historical. Because the overall design, mood and colour is very nice I think with some more designy elements...perhaps invented pieces of armor here and there or an extra invent weapon...I think that would take this piece to the next level. Don't be afraid to crispin up even more of those edges. Nice work.
al-x-
Very cool. It makes me laugh. I think by making the face a mask instead of a creature your could have stuck more to the curriculum and perhaps even a more interesting character. I would love to see some human eyes subtly suggested in the mouth as if he was trying to hide the fact its a mask...
Hunger_Artist-
I wish you would have had a tighter line drawing. From what I see the design could be pretty cool.
LOETZ-
That is an Awesome helmet!
Rinaldo-
Man! I wish you would have went all out. I am definitely a nerdy Rinaldo fan boy.
Stephen-
I love the mood of this. Did you design the Helmet? Cuz its pretty darn cool. I would of even like to see a bit more structural form created in the upper region. I love how the detail fades to the bottom.
Carnifex-
Neat idea I never seen that before. You may want to also check this link... http://saveloomis.org/ The figure drawing book can help you out..good luck...
Atmospheria-
Wow there is some pretty neat things happening with the paint. I'm happy to see that things are clarified. The heated back pack is cool.
Dan Milligan-
Yo, I love the two weapons, though I really wish there was something that cool in his costume. Very fun illustration.
Fipse-
I like the wolf on the shield. I would even like to see the wolf more engaging..perhaps an action pose.
JerMohler-
I think it's cool that you got the design across in an illustration. Once again I wish it wasn't so strictly historical. Nice finish.
xia-
Nice pose. I wish the edges were more crisp in the focal areas.
enigma-
Neat creature.
oDD-
This guy would beat some serious arse!
benzo-
I would have to say you have the best example of Design, nice pose, and clarity. The design is really well done because not only does it stay true to the culture but it has some definite invented element yet stilll staying true to Egypt. Great work. I would love to see you win. .....btw DAMN cool shield!
Hazart-
I found it hard to figure what to say about this piece. It very much seems like a historical samurai. I do dig that jaw plate.
kincept-
Cool pose, Cool helmet, cool bird on the knee. Cooooll painter FX brush. ;P
ljefe-
I like those things sticking out around his back.

coondoggle-
This is Hilarious! His hat is damn funny! It looks like he got in from a Japanese fast food place.
MrSmith-
I love the paint on this guy. I love the upper portion of this guy. Man, with such a cool paint I would of loved to see a more out of the ordinary basic shaping of the native American garment.
Fourth Nail-
Is that an energy shield? Very cool idea.
otis-
I like the crazy looking bug mask. Also the cool glowing Celtic sword!
sea minus-
Hey Ted, this has a great feel to it. I wish there was more attention put into the drawing. With more precise structure this piece would utterly own...
Chris J. Anderson!-
You already know what I think. The best is yet to come. And then the world will weep with joy...
BC_-
I like the munchkin look.
fireMonk-
Thats a hell of a club.
Nimrod-
Cool a$$ Helmet.
ploboyko-
Man that is a bunch of terrifying flags. Nightmares NIGHTMARES!
kravitz-
I really dig his shoulder guard and straps.
Johannes-
I like the top of the staff and the eagle on the back is a nice touch.
PublicAmusement-
I love the lighting and mood. I think thats the part of digital painting that you have down. Since you do have it down you should reallly nail down your form and structure. Even if its not a stylistic thing you'd like to do I still think it would greatly improve you're already good work. Its always nice to have more up the sleeve.
Prometheus|ANJ-
Mr. QuickPaint! ...I think its obvious the best design is in the mask of the last character. Man! I really wish you would have implemented that into the rest of the character.
Molly-
I like the basicness of this design. I think it would be even better without the horse body. A real elegant womanly figure with a mysterious mask and a build that demands respect.
Sedone-
Hey Sedone, Of course I love this as a painting. You're soo good at what you do I think its time to take your work to the next level. I think you would really benefit from some anatomical study. Once you're there I don't think you'll be so reluctant to put the same level of detail in the rest of the figure as you do in the faces(which is beautiful btw). Don't worry I'm not just speaking empty words. I am also taking the same actions with my work.
flaptraps-
With a line drawing this piece could be cool.
fish~-
I love that fish. Time to sound like a broken record..I would also love to see a full body. With the nice feel it just makes me want the rest.
Scratched Glass-
I like the paint and the head. I would like to see you explore more of the opposite colour...like some neutral greens or neutral green/blues within the appropriate areas of the reds. Very cool.
cire600-
I really really like the accordion shaping in the armor.
AbcArt-
Very scary. That retractable arm is just cool.
ghettomasterchen-
Cool stylized armor. I could be wrong but didn't I see this in one of your old posts? ;P
endregan-
I'm sorry. I can't see anything.
GhostofMacbeth-
Nice paint.
ELLioT-
That bird is awesome. I dig the basic shaping of this guy. Those pigs are funny.
oglzogl-
This style is soo neat that I wish there was a bit more actual form to distinguish the structure.
Duracel-
The piece is a bit hard to make out but, I love his face. Yo, if you really flush this out it could be a great portfolio piece. Please finish it.
Gloklund-
I really like the design of the armor. I'm not to fond of some of the colour play. The head is creepy and cool.
PhilHolland-
Ultra Insane Axes! You should really crispin this up..it'll be great!
siskol p-
Those face details are neat. I like the fact that they are not just flat tattoos but, have some mass.
grinn-
That's cool how that hook is connected to his wrist.
tyboogie-
My favorite aspect of this is the old Japanese style of overall shaping of the figure.
Stokes-
That chest armor is very cool.
Wohr Path-
Now thats a design! Unfortunately it will be overlooked because of the rendering. Have you had any painting classes? Good work. (thats not supposed to sound mean)
jmascho-
Very neat wrist weapon.
Flint-
Hey, I think the design of the wrist and the feather are soo cool, I would really like to see more of it in the rest of the design. Thats funny that no one has said anything about your presentation...
HardcorePixxX-
Pretty paint. Hilarious chest.
It reminds me of the first Turtles movie when April said "what, am I behind on my Sony payments?" when the ninjas met up with her in the subway.. too funny...
gimme-
Neat sword.
JOSHUATHEJAMES-
Jooshhuuaa the James. Youuuu fool. How DARE you judge!? You turned in an unfinished painting and you have nnnoo right to open your mouth! You did Not budget your time and you will SUFFER!!!!

You rock! Thank you for your time you took to give some feedback. Not only for those who will propably win, but also to us beginners. It's sometimes frustrating to participate 'cause you know your piece have no chance and nobody pays attention to it. But you did! So you're the man! Your piece is very nice. Not very scary fighter, but well done. I like those details like toes under water. Good luck to you and everybody else.

Josh, tremendous job on those critiques! As for your comments to me, I definitely appreciate the insight, and those are things which I consciously try to work on. I waited till the last minute to work on my piece, and when a deadline is tight you inevitably fall back on the things you know about. For a while now I've been working on giving my work the surface "shine" it needs to sell, but I think it's time for me to go back to basics and do some studies and life drawings. Thanks for the comments!

i've seen that my more "comic book" type of work has a cartoon feel to it. i'm trying to avoid this (like the plague, i might add) and move into a more fine art look. We just did an assignment for Illustration that had to be a total oil painting. The results were hopeful and i'm hoping that i can move it into digital media.
Thanks for the comments, it's greatly appreciated. This was a great thunderdome folks, lotta love in this forum. Can't wait for the next one. :)

Howbout this subject for the next Thunderdome. We assigned this one to our concept art students, create Giant Robots using WWII technology. The robot had to represent a specific country involved in the conflict.

thats a cool idea carlo. I dont think there's been a thunderdome just for robots..... though some have allowed robots among other things like the T3 and monster contests.
Your idea reminds me of Jae Lee's current Transformers/ GI Joe comic series. All the transformers have been redesigned to fit to WW2 era.
http://membres.lycos.fr/jaelee1997/home.html
I still want to have another round with EatPoo.com. CA lost to them last year, and thats just f#%^ed up! We'd kick there ass now, axis vs allies or whatever!!
Maybe one site could be allies, the other axis. Just an idea, but its kind of weird to be nostalgic about past wars

re: concept vs illustration. the breif was specificaly for a single shot I thought. can't really read it any other way.
I also think you will find that differet situations will require different aproaches in real world production. sometimes you want a nice polished illustration to show the guys in suits who pay the rent. others you might only need small scribbles to form visual communication between art savy team mates. it all depends. I think a lot of the time people just want something that looks cool. the development is more of interest to people like us and for working out what the art director (or whoever) wants.
and it would be a rare situation in which the artist would be writing copy for a pitch doc or such. or even making up the character for that matter ;)
thats just from my limmited exp tho.
and things change depending what studio it is.

for me its finished, this doesnt mean perfect, but it reaches its personal deadline ...
Well, i agree with your critique, many people gave me the same(hard to make out), but i dont really know how to handle it best - i think if i restart to paint on it i couldnt say when its really finished and would over-paint it.
I think i could better start a new image(i already did ^^) and leave this as my thunderdome-participation.
