Ooooh sounds cool-- I love thinking about this stuff!

BUT I have some questions, if you'll permit me to play a nerdy lawyer.

Where is the line drawn between a space station and a planet? The reason I ask is mainly threefold:

1. Regarding shape, when objects get to be a certain mass, the object's internal gravity, pulling evenly from every angle, causes it to be spherical (least surface area). My point is that any manmade thing with enormous mass that's NOT a sphere would be "torn in" (there are some exceptions, but Larry Niven took the best one). But my point is that, unless this thing was smaller than a conventional planet, any other geometric shape wouldn't really work.

2. Can I assume that the definition of a planet is that it orbits a star? (Because if you define a planet as something that has its own gravity, what about a gigantic space station that uses centripetal force as its gravity and doesn't orbit a sun?)

3. Does this planet have to be a single "unit"? I want to show more a less a connected "network", the sum of which might equal the mass of Earth, but, when spread out, wouldn't get the problem I mentioned in "1."

ALSO

4. Does a black hole count as a star?

5. Am I overanalyzing this?

So, yeah, sorry for going all lawyer on you guys but I'd hate to get started on an idea and find out it doesn't qualify as an actual "planet".

artiphats
July 20th, 2008, 11:29 PM
funny one thought I had was a connected network of sorts as well. I doubt Chaos will be too picky, I'm sure most of our ideas will be fine, but then again I don't really want to try and answer for her soooo.....

chaosrocks
July 21st, 2008, 08:43 AM
sorry about the date...coulda sworn I changed. Fixed

1.Nivin figured out a way, im sure you can too, although spherical is ok, it isn't mandatory.

2. yes a planet orbits around a sun. and is large enough to contain complete human societal units. I am willing to accept some loose definitions of sun. for example a microminiture planet that orbits around a living creature using the living creature as an energy source, might be acceptable. the thing around which the planet orbit must be the energy source for the planet.

3. I have no objections to networks.

4. I doubt if you could orbit a black hole, it would suck. literally.

5. yes

note: SPECIFIED>>>>MAN MADE.... inhabitants are Human with all the needs and limitations of the human body

Ok, thanks Chaos!

By the way, what a cool idea of an organism as a star!

Also, most people don't think of it this way, but it actually is possible to orbit around black holes without being sucked in, just like it is for a satellite in Earth to orbit it without being sucked down to it. The civilization would have to watch they don't get too close and pass the "event horizon (surface)".
Maybe it could feed on the heat/radiation the Hole belches...

Nah, as much fun as a Hole might be to paint, I think I'll stick to the conventional star.

On a more serious note:

Does the 'Sun' (for better of a better word) have to look like a sun? Can it also be man made? Can it be a long tube that this man-made planet orbits in order to sustain life?

as long as you don't violate the second law of thermodynamics too badly
energy has to come from somewhere.

YEAH I KNEW SOME LOVELY CREATIVE PERSON WOULD COME UP WITHTHE DEATHSTAR.....PLEASE LET THAT BE IT'S LAST APPEARANCE IN THIS THREAD...THANK YOU

Hey Rist how did you hack that original design I had going from my computer before I even had a chance to post it?!? Now I've gotta start from scratch, THANKS!

Actually though, I do have a question for you, Chaos... can the "view from space" be from say, up high in the atmosphere of the planet? I just want to make sure my shot isn't too close. I figure it will be ok as I have seen some nice NASA pics of earth from about that distance... but I thought I would bug you with the question anyway :)

*really* cool topic - reminded me of a Dyson Sphere (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyson_sphere), but I suppose that wouldn't quite qualify as a "planet," would it?

Cheers,

it kinda orbits around its sun

I keep getting images of dyson spheres and ringworlds locked in my head when trying to do this...
Apparently all the Sci-Fi novels I've read are a hindrance rather than a help.

Trying to get something original in time...

Really really love the topic this week Chaos

Heres an update:

ccsears
July 26th, 2008, 12:16 AM
the idea i had was just big silicon continents, an equatorial ridge of buildings (coming soon) like a gigantic particle accelerator, and then these big holes at the north and south poles so that this stream of energy could run North-South through the whole thing along the magnetic lines. the magnetic field would then shield the planet from solar radiation.

the topic was manmade, but i want to keep it a little subtle. i'm hoping to put a manmade weather pattern over the whole thing's atmosphere. clouds in a subtly regular formation... that kind of thing.

whatever. i'm going to comicon sunday. who knows if i'll finish. at least i managed a chow this week.

I'm thinking of designing a huge platform taking the iron core from one planet and placing it inside an artificial one.

Is this within guide boundaries? It's definitely viewed from space.

-BW

Edit: Oh and Shardana, maybe it only feels that way because there's not much of a sense of scale? Find some way of showing how big your artificial planet is and it'll feel a lot more successful. That's my advice, anyway. Your design reminds me of a strange Banks conglomeration of advanced architecture, keep it up.

Story

People made this to collect the resources of the universe
but one day it lost

After communication with Earth is disconnected
This artificial intelligence is increasingly began to collect pieces of a large asteroid and Construction itself more bigger and bigger

After a long history of the past
it collects the stars. and absorb resources

ok so I am totally scratching the post I have above, as it is too generic and I wanted to do something more original. It did act as a springboard for a better idea, which will be up by tomorrow. In the meantime I finished the optional backstory, tell me what you think of it as i am not much of a writer...

>>The year 5018 marked the end of the second war between the alien Vemmus on Earth, and the Humans on Mars. After almost 700 standard Earth years, and countless battles that ravaged the surface of both planets, the Humans were finally victorious. With the Vemmus all but wiped out, a plan was developed to rebuild and repopulate the Earth with Human, animal, and plant life. The Humans soon found, however, that the condition of the Earth was even worse than they had initially thought. The project would move forward, but it would take many generations of people before Earth would again stand as it had before the name of the Vemmus was known. In order to boost the moral of the remaining colonies on Mars, a second project was put into motion. With the technology the humans now possessed, another “planet” would be artificially built between the solar rotations of Earth and Mars. It would be a network of 24 floating stations, each a new vision of the paradise Earth used to be. Together these stations would move around the Sun as a single unit, contain different forms of plant and animal life, and serve as a point of beauty, rest, and relaxation for the war-worn Humans.

It is now 6072, and Paradisio-24 is complete.

os2008 that's some cool colors and composition!! really liked your works on your website, you should open a sketchbook here in ca!!

this is what' i've been doing..
lots of little things i'd like to do but..its late and i gotta go!not much time left anyway.. hope you like it!!

space stations are going to be your most likely man made planets. with the application of space elevators it'll be so much easier to expand in length and width that eventually they'll reach one other side..a continuous ring of man made structure that revolves around our world. with food and vegetables growing in apposite greenhouses the dependence from the mother planet will be less and less allowing one day to be fully independent from earth resources/control. that day the man made planet will become reality.

here (http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/1444/starbigxy4.jpg) is a bigger version if you're interested.

that's the sketchbook forum..every artist has a personal thread where they post all their works for criticism and comments, and usually put a link to it as a signature so people get to know you and your art whenever you write something :)

you'll see the links to sketchbook threads in most people signature, at the bottom of the single post. hope this helps.

Well, I want to be a little more involved in CA, instead of just lurking around all the time. So I guess I'll start here. :D

The reason I asked...is yeah because of what you said, that it seems like they get more activity....I got a little worried, because I wanted to do more enviros, and that there might be some weeks where it would take long because nobody would post or something. (which happened at another forum I was in. XD). But now I'm not worried. :)

Anyways, here's the little description I had for my entry- I need to get better at these too.

The planet's called business sector 89, and it's the busiest location of the entire solar system. All kinds of humans, humanoids, creatures, and other-wordly beings come there to trade goods, conduct business, and entertain the masses. It's considered a safe zone - it's not aligned with any superpower or faction.

Oh yeah, and this used to have a lot of floating parts with it - to represent where other species lived, like insectoids would have a "hive" looking planetoid attached to the skyscraper ring...but I don't have enough painting know how yet to make it all look good in, and even this version looks like poop.

Hello Everyone!

EOW#89

CONGLOMERA - An Entirely Man Made Planet
Thousands of years in the future, over the course of centuries the world of Conglomera was engineered and constructed by man from thousands of asteroids in the distant Deneb Dulfim system. Intended for eventual human colonization Conglomera's zero-axis and continental-ocean arrangement was designed to allow for predictable air and water circulation and climate stability.

Conglomera integrated asteroid world nearly complete:

yeah the eow forum is great, its got a family feel to it since we tend to have the regulars mostly rather than chow where there's loads of new people jumping in every session..so we get to know ppl and their art better.

still wouldnt be bad having a few more to get a greater variety of styles and skills.
I was thinking.. maybe sorting out the winners gallery (i didnt even knew it existed :P) and using the little trophy image next to the avatar like the other activities do, might help getting some more people involved? just some ideas..
anyway thanks for your work and support in this forum chaos :^^:

well the little trophy thing is in the avatar, or in the the title. I can't do either one as I am not an admin. I could make a little thingy that folks could plac einthere avatars, but it would have to be voluntary and I would really have no controll of who put it there. I would love to reward folks like that. and yes honestly I should sort out the winners gallery
it's on my guilt list... but I am ssoooooo far behind. . wanna design an avatar?
I wouldnt even begin to know how....
