Alright well, here it is, the community thread for all of us to post it. This will keep things in a semi-organized place. LoL. What do you guys think: Finals only for this thread? Or perhaps everything could go here? WIPs and the rest of it.

Well, regardless, here's assignment #1:

__________________________________________________ ___________
__________________________________________________ ___________

How about we try an easy start one:

Everyone do a self-portrait of yourself, or post a photo of yourself. That way we all kind of get a feel for who we are dealing with when we talk to each other.

And then maybe talk a little about yourself. Like where you want to be, what you are doing currently in your life, what kind of artist you want to be, what job is your dream job, etc...

And finally, post 3 pictures of art that really inspires you. Let's try to bulge our inspiration folders lol!
__________________________________________________ ___________
__________________________________________________ ___________

Let's kick this off with a bang.

Due: Sunday, July 20th.

We can all switch up every week if you guys would like to. Like AsaB does the next one, then PlasmaErnst, then MnM, Renegade89, J.Boswell, and finally ~Faust~.
Does that order sound alright to you guys?

See you guys soon.

Alright, here we go! Thread obviously subscribed to :D

Self portrait
Alright. I tried, I really did, but it turned out nothing like me as usual. Haha, I so fucked up the nose. I'm posting it anyway so you can crit (the point of this, right? ;)) but also the snapshot I took so you can see what I actually look like, I'm another curlhead!

413790413792

About me
My name is Ása. You can all just call me Asa because I know not everyone has nifty keyboards who make Á!
I'm a 21 year old Icelandic girl and I've finished one year at the Iceland Academy of Arts in architecture. I'm currently working at an architecture studio for the summer.

However, drawing has always been my true passion. But there isn't any proper drawing/illustration university up here, so I'd have to go overseas. And I didn't feel quite ready for that so I applied for architecture and graphic design after a general art foundation year. I got into both but chose architecture, and realize the other would've been a better choice for drawing, but stupid practicality and slight family pressure sort of got in the way :( I do like architecture, though, just not as much as drawing.

Now I want to finish the last two years of my architecture education (quitting is for losers ;p) and study illustration after that. Still not sure if I'm good enough, but I'm gonna try my best to improve (CA and this SSB is helping!) during the next two years.

My ideal job would be to travel the world and draw ethnic cultures! But I doubt such a job exists, haha. Well, maybe illustrating books about them. But a concept artist for movies or gaming would be great fun too :) I'm honestly still not sure what the ideal drawing job for me is yet!

Inspirations

From the start - Leonardo da Vinci
I know it's been done, but Leonardo has been a great source of inspiration for me over the years. This man was a genius on every freaking level!
413794

What got me serious - Glen Keane
Disney animation is what really made me serious about art back in the days (what, 12-13 year old) and Aladdin being my favourite Disney film, I religiously followed Glen's work after that.
413795

Currently - Marta Dahlig
There are tons of digital artists that inspire me, but currently I've been following Marta's work a lot. Her attention to detail blows me away!
413796

Phew, that's it then!
So I'm to pick a topic for us to do by next Sunday? How particular do you want it to be? Is it enough for you guys if I just said, 'draw a mermaid' or do you want a kind of brief like in CHOW? Let me know what suits you :)

Phwooaaaahhhr way to up the anti!

edit - the lips are a little too big ans the nose is not pointy enough... other than that its definatly you!

you should come to the UK for illustration! almost every Uni does it... but im sure architecture pays better :p

AsaB
July 15th, 2008, 08:38 PM
Whoo, thanks! :D Now that I put the drawing next to the photo, the faults are so obvious! You're right, the nose and lips are way off. Haha, better luck next time!

I've actually thought about coming to the UK for illustration :) Definitely cheaper than the USA and closer! Only thing that bothers me is I've heard that illustration there is rather arty-farty, if you get me. All about expressing yourself instead of teaching solid drawing foundation skills. But I'll check it better out in time :D

Where are the other sketchies? Get your butts in here! Maybe sending out PMs isn't a bad idea, not sure everyone's aware of the thread. I can do it tomorrow, but now I gotta go sleep. Nighty!

but I guess I have a pretty biased view.

Ok, a bit about me.

My name es Jesús Andrés Da Silva, im 18, soon i will turn 19 (august 8 ), i live in Caracas Venezuela. I enjoy drawing, reading, watching movies and
long walks at the beach.

Ill start first semester on graphic design in about a month, i graduated at 16 and went into mechanic engineering which was a bad decision and after almost 2 not so good years im changing career and university. Finished the intro course last month.
Graphic design and architecture are as good as it gets as far of options for creative professions where i live. Drawing is something i do on my own, as i really love illustration and want to get farther with it.

My goal is pretty much getting as far as can whit by doing something i like. One thing i wish is to get out of my country eventually and be able work or do more studies overseas.

As to what i like to draw right now im going mostly for fantasy art. I played magic, i read fantasy fantasy books, i listen to Rhapsody, and i played Blizzard Games, i love fantasy :geekg:. But not to say that i wouldn't do anything else.
As for a dream job, if i can feel comfortable doing it, is stable, and pay the bills then that would be pretty awesome as i see it. Having a "magic. The gathering card" with my art and my name will be pretty cool though .

I have been inspired from many different places and artists so i had a bit hard time to choose 3 pictures, but ill go with this 3 who have joined me for a while.

Frank Frazetta. What do i need to explain? is Frazzeta ;P
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/StirrFry99/Frazetta.jpg

Keith Parkinson. This particular image i remember from years back, i didn´t even knew his name, the first time i saw this it captivate me right away.
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x229/dincara/Web%20stuff/037.jpg

John Howe. I hold his images very dearly, i read the lord of the rings books as well as the hobbit when i was about 12 years old, i remember not being too much of a good time in my life and the Tolkien books together with his images where an incredible company that sparked my imagination when i needed it the most.

Aight time for my striptease then as the groups oldest :).

About me...
I am a 25 year old german guy. Have been studying Psychology and got my masters-degree about 1.5 Years ago. During my studies I began drawing and the thing has grown ever since to a state where I decided to make it my lifes career since this virus has grown so big that I cannot become happy ever pursuing something else. I studied in the Netherlands, then moved to Russia for a year where I got really hooked with drawing regularly and slowly accepted the fact that I am going to draw for the rest of my life. Then moved to Berlin to find good education but I got appaled by the art-institutes over there and quickly got frustrated. As the next step I enrolled in an academy in the Netherlands again (In Groningen), where I'll start formal training in September. The curriculum doesn't seem to be very full though so I'll more or less do the same I do right now with additional traditional classes (Exactly what I have been searching for). I don't have a particular job in mind since I see so much hot air in the fine-arts department and so much childish marketing-slavery in the industry. So I pretty much draw for myself and hope to find an art-job that doesn't suck out my soul before I run out of money.

So that's it, I pretty much gave up everything to run after a bunch of obsessed kids like you. Serves me right :D

Selfportrait...
Right now I am roomhunting in the NL so an old one will have to do

Inspirations:
Damn there is so much that I cannot possibly tone it down to 3. There's frenchies like Jean Giraud, Phillipe Guillaume, Arthur de pins, ... , those crazy americans from MB, Kemp Remillard and Arthur Dobie being my favourite, and don't even start me about the dead guys from the Netherlands! Well, I'll give 3 examples of artists that I study this very moment:

Johannes Vermeer: My all-time favourite! Also a good glimpse of hope since that guy only painted around 17 paintings and is still famous as fuck. He is the master of everyday-emotion and I tend to meet his characters even today, awesome!
http://www.rijksmuseum.nl/assetimage.jsp?id=SK-A-2344&coulisse

Boris Zaozerski: I am not a big fan of his paintings, but his figuredrawings are some of the best and most expressive I've come across: http://b5.imgsrc.ru/r/rinrin/4/6152884prv.jpg He's a soviet artist that died around 6 years ago.

Okama:
I especially LOVE his comic hayabusa, it's an erotic comic that has pretty explicit material with bestiality, incest, group-rape and all kinds of other Hentai/stuff but his art is beyond beatiful and his designs really stunning, also his style is extremely versatile considering he is a japanese manga-artist

AsaB I thought of architecture for a moment when swapping careers, graphic design caught my attention a bit more.

I remember blackeri´s seven sins from a while ago, haven´t checked her work in a while, she has some cool renderings. Reminds me of Linda Bergkvist.

Alright, great to be able to put faces to the names :)

So James, I haven't checked too deeply into the whole thing, it was just my first impression and something I've heard from others. You, being a native, might know better! So can you maybe name me any good and reliable schools with a solid illustration course? :) Anything you've got your eye on?

I'm still so sketchy (no pun intended!) about the whole drawing thing. But I know I'll regret for the rest of my life if I don't pursue this, I simply have to. I might have to give up my architecture career for this. Something that's very stable, respected and well paid. Well, artists have never been the most practical of people!

Also, I'm gonna ask this again in case anyone missed it.
Since I'll be the first one to choose a topic, just how specific do you want me to be? Just a word ok (draw a centaur) or you want details? Maybe keeping this fairly open is better so it won't be too much a strain, but I don't know. Speak up :D

Also, of course it'd be best to get a fairly well done and finished piece out of these activities, but I'm sure everyone gets busy once in a while, so then it's okay to simply turn in sketches or concept, don't you think? To show you thought about this? I'm personally a tad busy these days (will be over soon!), but I still want to participate.

I'm thinking too much again, I'll shut up. You guys take over!

For me it´s fine with just the subject or a phrase, i like it open. But i wouldn´t bother too much if the rest decides for the detail way.

I´ll take the chance to let you guys know beforehand. Next week i might be a bit busy, i got a call today to let me know i had an open spot for a course on Flash CS3 i have been wanting to do. I have been in the waiting list for a while, is a bit of a hassle to get in, apparently one guy cancelled so im taking his place.
It only lasts 5 days since monday in which i might be a bit busy.
Ill still give the activity a shot, but just in in case, if im a bit idle from the boards during these days you know why.

Asa, I'm going to university in falmouth to take my foundation year (mish mash of all art techniques) and after that the chances are i'll stay there to do illustration, falmouth seems to be the best in the UK, but there's places like bristol, cambridge, bournmouth, and one or two of the london colleges...

(almost every uni has an illustration course)

If you ask on the "UK" ca.org local artists group they should be able to tell you :) nice bunch of people

I vote we build up the challenges gradually, starting simple and ending up more specific :)

~Faust~
July 17th, 2008, 07:25 AM
Hmmm I miss Malakai, as the starter of this thread :)

I don't know about making the challenges simple, we're supposed to the scetching and growing in our scetchbook anyway, remember? I would suggest to really let the one to set up the next challenge decide so I trust Asa to provide us with something nice to do the next week. I see it as a way to brake out of comfort-zones and work a week on something for a change. So for a little introduction this is okay but I would really like to work something up for future challenges. Wouldn't be very challenging otherwise, would it?

An example would be to do a character-sheet with thumbs, modelsheet and action-pose given a certain topic like badger-molesting pope or something.

James, sounds like you have a fun foundation year ahead of you :) I had a blast in my foundation year, experimenting with all sorts of mediums and techinques. Hope you'll have a good time! Also, thanks for naming those schools for me, I'll check those better out :)

But alright, about the topic. Gand..er, Faust has a a very good point! Something more specific should rip us all better out of the comfort zones, otherwise we'd probably interpret open topics as something more familiar to us.

I had actually also thought of having character sheets with expressions and such, like Faust mentioned. Sort of in the spirit of CHOW. I don't think it's necessary to have a strict number of those, but I agree it'd be nice to see some of the experimenting process and sketches along with the final piece.

So! It's always hard to start, but I'll give this a little thought now. :) How about having Mondays as the deadline days? I personally find it nice to have the weekend to finish things off but if that's not convenient for others, just say so.

July 17th, 2008, 02:17 PM
Sorry guys, life's always hectic here during the week (I work from home, so the hours are usually sketchy at best). But anyway... here's the assignment from me! :)

My name is Mathew Kaminski, and I'm from the little crap-hole of the US called Memphis, Tennessee. Luckily, I am in no way a southern redneck that is generally portrayed of the south... I've been drawing since I was a wee lad, but only really got serious about it around the time my sketchbook started, so a little over a year.
I love playing video games in just about any form (especially old-school 2D classics) and so I am working up towards a degree in video game art and design.
Currently I'm in college for Graphic Design, but that is hardly where I plan on ending up. It's just good to have a back-up :D
I live with my fiancee and we plan on getting our lives together hopefully very soon and I can't forget that we are both animal lovers.
It's actually a little crazy with the amount of animals we have crammed in with us. A ferret (which you will actually see in my art quite a bit), a dog, a bunny, and two rats.

Regardless, I try my damndest to get this art thing right (I've been told I think too much before I draw... whatever that means).

There's my picture below. I will have to draw a more up to date one tonight. :) I look only a little different than that one lol. But even still, I should draw it (Putting a new one up now!)

First inspiration: Andreas Rocha (http://www.andreasrocha.com) -- Some of the most beautiful landscapes I can find. This inspires me especially since I plan on being an environmental artist.

Second inspiration: Benjamin Carre (http://www.blancfonce.com/) -- This artist to me has some great emotions and feel in his art. Especially his beasts.

Third inspiration: Tie between the art for Diablo 3 (http://www.blizzard.com/diablo3/) and The new Prince of Persia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Prince_(8).JPG). Diablo 3 for it's beautiful landscapes, and the new Prince of Persia for its great character design.

That about sums me up for now...

Mat Kaminski

AsaB: Honestly, I think the weekly activities should be up to the person. If you decide to go really complex and give an entire story for your week, then so be it. I just kind of think it should be something fun that can be refined down to a complete or nearly completed piece. This doesn't always have to include full-color, special effects, etc.
I just think it should depend on the skill level of those attempting it I guess, and since this seems like a pretty talented group, I don't see much of a problem going complex. Let me know how you guys think.

Monday sounds good to me. And then I suppose we could start up every Tuesday as the next topic then? That still gives us a couple more days to do this first one.
Weekends are peak times for me, so it's always best to have the weekend to do my work.

AsaB
July 18th, 2008, 06:30 AM
Alright, here's what I think, since people seem to have fairly different opinions about the activities, I guess it's fair that people do it on their own rhythm. Complex or not, with or without sketches, just as long as everyone turn in a finished piece with thought behind it we're good. Just don't forget to keep it challenging. That's the whole point, right? Obviously to have fun too but we're here to try new things and get out of our comfort zones so try to expand your horizons and push the limits :)

Malakai says ok on Tuesdays for new topics, sounds good to me, what about the rest? :)

I admit this week's CHOW looks interesting. If you all prefer, we could delay our first topic until it's done, if everyone wants to do that instead.

But wait, it goes for 2 weeks, doesn't it? Then I think we should have time to do both :) At least I'll put something up on Tuesday!

Hi guys!
Great, everyone seems to be ready for the challenge, that's promising. Alright, I've cooked up a topic, let's see how you feel about it:

The Witch Doctor Rookie
Deadline: Monday, July 28th

Haha, obscure enough? :D Ok, the idea is to portray a young tribal witch doctor who's suddenly taken over the job because his mentor bit the dust before completing the training. He's awkward, he hardly knows what he's doing, quite lost. Mixing wrong potions, putting the dress on wrong, not healing but breaking etc. You all get the general idea?

Just where he's from is up to you. My initial thought was something like Polynesian, but it can be from the African plains, Indonesian jungles, banks of Amazon etc. Also, I guess this could be a woman as well, although that's probably not quite as traditional, but it's not forbidden.

I hope this is something we can work with!

But I'm going camping next weekend so I'm gonna try to finish it before. Just typical. :p

Guh, sorry how late I am. It's still 20 minutes left of Monday (here, anyway), so I'm puttin mine in now. I haven't had a chance to pick up a pencil since Tuesday so I'm afraid it's not nearly as finished as I'd like it to have been.

But first a few crits!
Renegade - Very good expression and posture! Nice costume too. I think his ethnic features might've been pushed more, though. Your anatomy is still wanting more form, but it's all on a good track.
James - Love his face! Very exotic and ethnic. I would've loved to see it more finished and a little more character showing but lovely work nonetheless.
Malakai - The posture is priceless, poor fella doesn't know which way to turn. Very good costume and accesories, they seem authentic. A little research, even? More definition in his upper area would've been great, though, using reference never hurts :)
MnM - His expression is so great, you nailed the aloof and rookie feeling there. Same goes for the pose and concept. And lovely costume! The shading might be more consistant, though, and watch your line quality too, you have a little sketchy tendency. But great work.
Faust - New style! Very unusual from your normal work, I noticed you pushed your comfort zone out. Character design is amazing! His expression made me giggle. Love the concept, you really did the brief justice. It does seem a little unfinished, though, but still lovely.
PlasmaErnst - He immediately reads witch doctor to me, and also rather rookish as well! Great headdress and outfit, fits the brief. It's mainly a matter of anatomy studies here. Also seeing it more finished would've been nice, but it seems like most of us fell into that pit ;)

Alrighty, here's my piece. I'm really not that happy with it, since it was done in a hurry today, had little time. Rip it apart!
I've got sketches and studies in my SB which will be updated later this evening!

Thanks AsaB, i kinda used the theme to try some other thinks with the colors, pushed some more with saturation and used a lineart, havent done that much, was fun. :)

Mnm I like the pose and expression you chose, it goes well with it, one thing is that you seem to go over the lines a bit much, be loose and confident, dont stress that much on the outlines of the figure.

Well, there´s a thing i notice, dont wanna come up as a jerk or anything, and maybe im just the only dirty minded prick who will notice such thing but there are a few lines that read like he has an erection.

Cool design, would have liked to see where the big top was going, or "is going" in the case your still doing it.

Renegade89: Great coloring job! It really brought it to life. Has a nice comic-book feel to it.

AsaB: Interesting composition. Have you gone to art school? If not, you have linework like an art school student. Which isn't a bad thing, it just means that your lines are very loose.

Great work all around guys! I like how this is taking off lol. We are definitely keeping it together!
I think PlasmaErnst is next... it's his show starting today! :) Might not be a bad idea to PM him in case he didn't notice it was his turn today?

They might have human shape - modified super soldiers of enemy tribes
...maybe they are never-seen-before-like...

They are the most cracking creatures you can serve with :D

My name is Michael. I primarily work with pen and ink, but I'm willing to try other mediums. I've been drawing unprofessionally all my life, up until recently did I decide that I want to broaden my talents and get some exposure.

I'm currently developing a world for a science fiction novel that I plan to write sometime later in my life. Now for the horrifying self portrait and three inspirations.

...Also sorry for the late join. I don't think I'll be able to post up the first assignment as I'm currently activated at my base. I'll still draw it and just post a link to it on the next assignment.

Been pretty busy again, my new room is finally getting to the last stages and I went away for a day with friends to a summer cabin so I'm afraid I haven't been drawing much lately :( Gah, I really need to be more consistant, even just a 10 minutes doodling inbetween.

But enough nagging. I haven't started the new challenge but I'm eager to. So do we get to turn it in tomorrow because we got the topic a day late? It wouldn't hurt...:bashful:

August 4th, 2008, 12:42 PM

Just wondering also, is it my week next week for a topic? Or are we skipping me?

angel2342
August 4th, 2008, 01:31 PM
Pretty basic sketch. I don't really like it. The sky needs more detail, I'm not sure what to do with it that wouldn't ruin the picture. The jungle needs more detail, and I'm not sure what to do that wouldn't make it feel cluttered. The monsters need more detail, the snake monster is too bland, the positioning of the insect-like monster just makes me cringe.

Vanishing horizons are another un-forté of mine.

I never got around to finishing assignment one because I was so busy at my training for the Air Force. I had several sketches but tossed them because they were far below par, even for me. They won't be getting posted in my sketchbook either.

Malakai, I think it's perfectly reasonable to make you the next on in line, the first assignment was just this pre-thing you were kind enough to step forward and do :) At least my opinion, hope the others agree!

Nice sketch angel, very epic! And yeah, I also have a snake in mine, like James was mentioning, heh. It's not that unusual we're many doing that, having Quetzalcoatl, the plumed serpent, in Aztec mythology.
We'll see how that turns out, I'm still working on it...drawing creatures is really fun, though!

Pity to hear about your PC crash, Fabian :( I hope you'll manage to cook something up for us anyway!

PlasmaErnst
August 5th, 2008, 04:52 PM
:D i guess that has to happen when you run 5+ apps at once...and never mind saving your progress
started of again from an older version, sadly its quite unfinished, there is not much of an environment jet... also the creatures look quite unconnected to each other (perhaps more space between them)...not to mention that they dont look like i imagined at all...pfffffff :)

Youch, that's just dope, Fabian! Badass design on these guys! Esp.the one on the right, that arm and shading is just beyond sweet. Nice piece, although it's a pity you couldn't finish it more (and obviously about having to restart it just today). Good job :)

Where are the others? Isn't the deadline tonight? :)

Well, here's mine. It's quiiite different from my usual thing! Not only was the creature design miles (yes!) from my comfort zone, but it surprised that it was great fun to explore :) I also tried a different style, no inking involved! Well, no painting eiher, but it's a vector type thing. I wanted it to be all colourful like the art of the Aztec...hm.

Pity about the unfinished pieces, guys, but at least this will teach us some time management! Hopefully we'll gradually be able to finish the work for this :) Still a few crits, though! The whole point, amirite?

Faust - I admit I was looking forward to your work, but if you couldn't make it, that's that. At least I'm not gonna insist anything :) You've given us plenty of goodies in your SB lately, after all! So you didn't get any sketches or thumbs done or nothing?

Jesús - That's a great start! Used ref? Although anatomy isn't 100% it's still improvement and the comp is pretty dynamic! Would've been interesting to see this finished with pyramid and all but at least you got some decent work done on the guys. Feathered serpent guy looks esp.good and well done. Some more interesting lighting might've done this even more epic, currently the shading isn't too bold but still nicely executed. :)

Malakai - Well, your piece is still in the first step so it's kinda hard to crit. Do you plan to finish it? I don't really see how you were gonna fit the other monster in the frame, it looks like only the head would be visible. I like the outfit on the finished monster, though! But hey, try to make more time next time, this could've been good :)

James - Well, quite unfinished as well which makes it also hard to crit! But at least your light strokes gives me an idea of how the comp would've been. That big-armed fellah has a good and realistic design (although hard to make out) and I like how he's leaping off the pyramid. The serpent's face is really cool too. Damnit, why didn't you finish, it has great potential! ;)

Where has Justice been lately? Anyone heard from her?

Anyway. Malakai, I'm looking forward to the topic you'll give us, bring it on :)

Mat Kaminski
August 6th, 2008, 08:11 PM
Alright guys... it's my turn to come up with one.

I've been beating around ideas for a bit, and so I finally decided on one that was inspired by my fiancee lol!

So here it is:

Master, Underling, and Pet

Three subjects that are somehow related. They don't neccesarily have to be in the same scene or anything. They just have to relate in a three-tier way.
An example of this:

Say you have some uber magical mage dude, draw him, then draw a creature that is meek in nature, as if they are the underling that does the hard work for his superiors without receiving any real credit, in this case you have his servant which just so happens to be a mixture of a human and a frog (which would make good use for filing and finding things). And then Toby, their pet beholder. :)

Draw three completely strange characters. Blend things, experiment, use some imagination in this one.

This topic is mainly to inspire creativity.

Deadline: Wednesday, August 13, 2008 So get to drawing >:O

Hopefully this will be an interesting one to get us all going on the inspiration route.

MnM... I'm sorry that things are screwy for you :(( Hope things get worked out soon.

AsaB
August 6th, 2008, 08:50 PM
Alright! This is different, for sure :) But a few questions though:

You say they have to relate in a 'three tier way'. As in, be all together in one picture, not necessarily interacting, but yet connected? I'm a bit confused as on how that's done :bashful:

Also, does gender matter? The master or underling can be female? I'm actually not sure which I prefer (I could use more male studies), but still just wondering :)

But otherwise, this seems like a challenging and fun topic!

Mat Kaminski
August 6th, 2008, 09:28 PM
Alright, to clarify: They can be all in the same picture if you want, but most likely would be best to have 3 seperate pieces. The way I meant that they are connected is that they all follow a same general theme.

Like if I pick a shogun guy, then his Underling could be a samurai, and the samurai's pet could be a falcon.

As far as gender goes, it's entirely up to you. They can be all female, one male, the rest males, whatever. It's up to you :D

Hope that helps :)

AsaB
August 6th, 2008, 09:31 PM
Ah, I get you, thanks for the explanation :) I don't know where I got it that they'd have to be together in the same picture, silly me.

Very interesting topic! I'll have to do some research to find an cool theme for them all :)

No, didnt used ref, i made a couple of small thumbnails of poses and stuff but at the end just started with a gesture on the block page and went with it, i was late already is noticeable with all the mistakes. I though of doing a couple of crumbling pillars and some thunder in the back but that was a stretch :(.

And how was your process, you used vectors only?

Those are cool figures Fabian, the red guy could be just a tiny bit more in the action, but boy the volume of it is lovely.

Michael The scene is well chose for the theme, with the giant creatures above the clouds.

Jim hope you do finished some more on the next week, the parrot guy started to look good.

I wouldn't insist or anything like it Ulrich, specially since you have been the most consistent, posting studies in your sketchbook this whole time. If you couldn´t don't stress. Not that it wouldn't have been interesting to check your idea.

Mathew putting too much pressure on yourself when you sketch is counterproductive, no one is holding a gun trough your head in case you make a mistake... well i dunno who's there or not, but there shouldn't be at least ;)

For your theme i think ill go with the 3 characters in the same scene if thats ok. It seems interesting relating them using the composition.

Sorry to hear that Justice :( .

August 7th, 2008, 01:14 PM
Jesús, we all had time management problems this week apparently, so I don't blame you. We all learn something from this, at least! And I actually made mine all is PS so they're not real vectors. I just used the lasso tool and some gradients, hehe :bashful:

Is the Human/frog mixture just an example or part of the guidelines of the assignment?

Also, what is a pet beholder?

It sounds like a fun one, but I didn't quite understand those two parts. I can't wait to start.

AsaB
August 8th, 2008, 10:32 AM
Angel, I think the human/frog was just an example. You pick a theme for all three guys yourself and then the pet will follow that, you can make it a turtleduck or whatever ;)

Pet beholder refers to an unusual pet of some sort, am I right? Just not a regular household dog. At least that's how I understand beholder. Malakai, maybe you should do the explaining :D

Mat Kaminski
August 8th, 2008, 12:37 PM
Yeah, you got the first part right AsaB, it's just general guidelines to follow :)

The pet can be anything really... like for me, for example, I'm following a sort of sci-fi esque theme:

Master: A complete tyrant (keep in mind sci-fi-esque, so lots of cybertech and things)

Underling: Ferret type character (Look at my avatar ;p)

Pet: Surviellance bot.

So, I have a sci-fi theme all around. Hope this helps.

As far as a beholder goes... well here you go ;p

But if nothing else, you're absolutely free to try the topics by yourself :)

I must say that the outside interest in our thread is coming as a surprise! How fun! Maybe that's something we should think about...

And if you found the other topics cool, feel free to try your hand at them, although that's not necessary.

First off, welcome to the group Jason, glad you could join us!

This is the first idea I had about the mage/master. Forgive me for including some subject matter from my developing universe, but it's easier for me to create a type of character when I have the freedom to create their own history. blah blah blah....here's the sketch and description:

The Mage of Horns is a powerful master of the magick that surrounds and envelopes Lignamira. The waving wing-like appendage that flows from the mage's back are converged pieces of two of the lesser gods, The Black and White Masses. The portions of the gods that are attached to him grant him control of a greater and wider range of power as far as magick is concerned.

I gave him a cloak to help hide my struggle with drawing anatomy but it only reminded me that I also need to work on fabric, creases and folds in the fabric as well.

AsaB
August 9th, 2008, 04:21 PM
Alright, James! How about showing it to us then :D

Nice concept, angel, I really like it! The backstory was interesting too, the character makes more sense and its purpose is clearer. His design is really interesting, all those horns and strings are definitely cool.

I'd say that he himself isn't quite as eye-catching as his accessorie. Maybe give him a more definite expression? I admit I can't quite make his face out, are the eyes positioned that low on the face? I quite like the cloak too, it fits him! Just keep in mind not to have the folds so uniform, like in his upper folds they're almost rhytmical because their width and form is almost identical. Just something to thing about, otherwise this has great potential and I'm looking forward to see how this turns out :)

Which reminds me, I should probably start thinking about my own...:bashful:

Thanks for the warm welcome guys :) I'm undecided whether I want to join up with another SSG (the last one I was with just sorta disintegrated), I was mainly in here for a quick burst of inspiration (which I got, and thank you all for it :)) but I'll think about it and we'll see what happens.

At any rate I think I'm pretty much done. This is a bit different than my usual style, I blocked in the values as normal but then lined it all out, went for something nouveau-ish. Still a while before the deadline and I may tweak some stuff, crits very much appreciated:

433410

The Trinity of the Withered Feather is a threesome of sky-goddesses that are all manifestations of the same element - evil. During prayer and sacrifice, one touches the forehead, heart, and genitals reciting their stations in sequence - the master, the pupil and the holy wretch, symbolizing evil thought, neglect and perversion, respectively. They are associated with death, the sky, storms, and scavenging birds.

Madda
The Master, she is the chief deity in the trinity. She is the manifestation of wisdom, thought and magic. Her realm is that of conspiracy, murder and insidious plots. Behind the aspirations of dictators, the motives of murderers and the musings of conspirators lies her supple hand, weaving threads of evil imagination.

Iera
The Pupil, she is the underling of Madda, submissive and subservient. She is the manifestation of ‘innocence’ as it relates to evil - naïve, her realm is that of ignorance, neglect and uncaring. It is said that when she wished to make her house warm she burned it to a cinder. When her family cried out in horrifying agony, she merely shut her bedroom door.

Giss
The Holy Wretch, she is Madda’s inhuman pet. She is the manifestation of perversion, lust and depravity. Her realm is that of incest, bestiality and rape. She constantly tries to seduce the naïve and chaste Iera, but Iera, being ignorant and innocent, never reciprocates (nor understands) her advances. If Giss ever tries to force herself on Ieda, Madda tightens her leash.

Whoa, Jason, that's incredible! I'm really blown away by all the thought you put into this. The soft colours and delicate linework are a real eye candy, love that little art nouveau twist in it.

However, I'm actually finding the backstory more interesting than the actual designs (although they're badass), mostly because I'd never have figured all this out just by looking at it. So although their hierarchy is obvious, is it possible you could somehow intertwine each realm/manifestation with corresponding character more clearly? Iera doesn't scream innocense to me. In fact, she's the most passive out of the three. Madda has that obvious evil aura around here and Giss's pose reads very sensually, in that beastly way, so good job on those. Maybe you could give Iera a more 'ignorant' pose or something? I'm just throwing stuff out here!

But all in all, that's delicious and an awesome concept :) I should get started on mine!

Hey guys.

I'm afraid I'll have to skip this round :( I'm so sorry, I loved the topic! But I've been sick for the past 3 days with a bad case of IBS, which I suffer from. I haven't gone to work, just mindlessly browsing the webs, I don't even have the strength to pick up a pencil.

I was busy organizing my room over the weekend so I never really got a chance to flesh out my ideas, I had meant for those last days to do the weekly SSB. But I'm gonna share this one sketch that I did last Friday, just so I have something. The concept wasn't finalized, but it was something about a mistress who represented Life and her envious bald underling who spun souls out of her hair. The role of the pet wasn't even clear yet! It just somehow evolved since I like drawing hair.

But I'll be back tomorrow to give everyone a nice round of crits :) Again, apologies!

And hey, is it MnM or Jason who'll choose the next topic?

Alright, I'm a little over deadline... but I had to color at least one of them... I'm super slow at this whole coloring thing :(

But anyway... here you guys go.

Aleksander Bardokov

Born in 2020, in the barren wastelands of Northern Russia. He lived a quiet life and was only first truly discovered for his academic potential in 2049.

He actually managed to survive the third world war, known at the time as the Euro-Wars, since the main theater of war was the entire center ground of Europe. Every country at the time fought to keep itself afloat.

Oddly, when the war was reaching it's peak and famine was taking hold of the mainland of Europe, who else to step in, but the Zinkar Corporation.
Aleksander was the leader and founder of the Zinkar Corporation, which at the time teamed up with the leading food manufacturer in the world. None other than, you guessed it, McDonalds.

During the early 2060's he was a lead scientist in cybertechnological and biological sciences. As far as anyone knew, he was a mild mannered, average scientist... Unfortunately for everyone around him at that time, he had a deep rooted hatred for man-kind that actually led to his own self-experimentation. As time passed, he decided that he wanted to become more machine than man. He even began to self-mutilate in his effort to become a partial cyborg. His motto was actually, "if you can't devote your life to your work, then don't work at all." He actually ended up in the hospital many times for extreme trauma and blood-loss.

During his last endeavor, he seemed to have gone mad and reclused himself up for about six more years. It was only after these years that his greatest invention known to date came about. And it was actually the culmination of creature and machine. Known only at the time as the "Ascension Project", his genius lead to the creation of small creatures that were essentially animal fused with machine. The world changed it's views of Aleksander on the day of their unveiling... and he is now the wealthiest man in the world, since all wars have to go through his creations first, as they are the first hands of war.

Vixie Bardokov

Aleksander's first creation, and thought to be the most powerful. She actually leads most assault teams, and has a tendency to get cocky mid-mission, sometimes even leading to huge monetary loss to all parties involved. The monetary loss that she causes to Aleksander is of no concern to him, though, because she gets her job done with the utmost of efficiency when she doesn't fall to her destructive nature.
After all, she is a ferret by nature, what more can you expect than a little chaos?

Her weapon is actually a heavily modified machine pistol. It has smart link capability (which basically tells her friend from foe on the battlefield), a firing rate of fourteen rounds per second, 140 round, .33 caliber banana clip coming out of the bottom, and even a custom hand grip that has a taser embedded in the grip. It also has a silencer attachment and can be broken down to no larger than a soda can size. To round it all out, she even carries multiple nerve gas grenades on her waist. After all, you never know when you'll need a quick getaway.

Symbiotic Camera Bot

This small invention actually looks like a little moth or butterfly whilst flying around, so most tend to never notice that it is actually a camera. And a damn good one at that. It has 400x magnification, thermal-optic vision, low-light capability, and even flare-compensation for those rough times when things get bright. It actually hooks straight up to Vixie's eye piece and basically gives her a 'third-eye'. It's very useful in the most dire of situations, and tends to actually be a commonly used invention by Vixie.
If you see the bot, most likely it's already too late for you. So at all times:
"Watch your back, shoot straight..."

I hope that wasn't too much... let's just say that I've had the idea building up for these characters for awhile!

I actually can't wait to start on the new one though, Cerebus has long since been my favorite mythical creature.

Good to see you back MnM :)

Until next one...

Hey guys! I meant to drop in crits earlier, but I was awaiting for more entries, but I guess this is gonna be it, huh? I'm sorry yet again for bailing like that, stupid health, who needs it?

Since I've already critted Jason up there, it'll only be Fabian and Malakai who'll get some!

Fabian - Awesome bot design! I like how you can convey texture and form so easily (almost!). The master truly looks like a badass tyrant, the expression, pose and armour really say it all. But the underling, he's supposed to be a technician, you said? That really doesn't seem obvious in his design and frankly that bigass arm doesn't seem too convenient for that purpose either. But I'm a complete n00b regarding mech stuff, so I may be talking trash. And that pet is beyond adorable! Overall it's obvious that they all belong together and the hierarchy is clear too, so good job on that. A little more crisp or finished feel would've been ever nicer, but at least you finished ;)

Malakai - Wow, you really thought this through, huh? Nice descriptions and story! It always helps tremendously to make a background story for the characters you're designing, you really took good use of that.
The master looks a little too generic for my taste and doesn't seem to obviously belong to that sci-fi group that the underling and pet both clearly belong to. Putting a more sci-fi spin on the feller would've helped! My favourite here is the underling (and yours too, perhaps?), it's obvious you put the most thought into him. That really paid off! His gear and armour are both very sci-fi looking and have a belivable look to it. But I would've liked seeing the cute pet bot with some colour and texture so that the thoughtful description would be reflected more. Otherwise, impressive! :)

Alright. Sorry about that little absense for the past days, had to take a break from internet and drawing because I had become frustrated with everything I drew. The break seems to have ended the dryspell, though, so it's all good!

James, that's a neat idea, I like it! I'd love to explore that :)

Fabian, killer hot stuff!, but im not sure about the masters legs, maybe add one out to the side or something... other than that... lush

Malakai, great storyline you've got going on!, the master could do with a spot of paint? that would be awesome!

Alright, so here's another crit ;)

James, these are some epic drawings! :D I really like the atmosphere of them, it already feels kinda otherworldy. The Master drawing has the most character (well obviously, most finished!) and I reeeeally would've liked to see where you wanted to take it, yet again ;) Sweet typography too! I see you're kinda into that, huh? However, I don't really get the common theme. Some fantasy world, I guess? I like the octopus, though! Good job, even though you didn't finish, it seems interesting :) And congrats on getting that A earlier!

A question, am I the only one critting? Wasn't that whole point, to post all the finals in this thread and exchange crits? Don't be shy, guys! :)

Hi guys! :)

Alright, so... you're right AsaB, this is a great place to critique everyone else, that was the original purpose. So here goes the crits:

angel2342: Oh hey now... have you ever seen Dark Crystal? That's what this guy reminds me of...

He has a promising start, I'd suggest if you are looking to go back and work more on him, to do a couple of cloth studies. He seems to have a nice cloak going on in the background. Also, what are the tentacles coming off of him... bone? Or is it just decoration?

Shame not to see the rest of the three, but I can understand now that it was a bit much for one assignment... Hope to see you on the next one :D

Jason Rainville: Heya Jason! Nice looking piece. It grasped the topic well, and so you get a gold star for that ;)

There are a couple of issues that I can see though, the bottom-most character, Giss, is very distracting in the fact that at first glance. She seems to have an odd angle for her figure...
It has a nice feel to it... I really like the main character, as she seems to have the most character.

I'm actually drawn to your descriptions more than the actual piece.

All-in-all though, it's really nice. Keep up the good work.

PlasmaErnst: Oh wow... your starting to really improve in this! :) I would've loved to see you finish up! :)

As far as the inner mechanics go, the mechanic guy seems to be odd for the sheer fact that his humongous hand would make it difficult for him to maneuver and things...

The main character really stands out the best. He was the closest to being finished :)

Try to finish up sometime and post them in your book :)

AsaB: So sorry you didn't get to participate enough in this round... hope to see you next round :D

It looks promising... would love to see you go further with it sometime...

J.Boswell: Your style, as always, has this really neat old-school vibe to it.

I don't know how to explain it other than you have a look of the old masters coming on...
Typography is definitely a strong point you put in your pictures, and it really stands out! :) Don't stop, it looks cool!
The apprentice looks like he's beginning to cast a spell or something? I dunno... cool though!

Keep coming with this one, it shows great promise! :D

====

Hope to see this round... I have my Cerberus going up right now! :D

My fiancee actually came up with the idea initially for it, and she wrote a good description of it:
--------------------------

Cerberus (Undead Demon Dog)

Obviously Cerberus is immortal, hence the “Undead”

* Cerberus is a creature with a body build similar to that of a dog. The one distinguishing factor would have to be that this is a creature that has three (3) heads.

* Each head has a different hold on the body of the beast.

* The first head represents Validity. This is the central station of the body that keeps the beast grounded. Gives it a clear head, to think sensibly, without making rash decisions.

* The second head represents animosity. This is the part of the body that controls the rage of the past inside the beast. The need to bring pain and suffering to the one that hurt him, and perhaps any that get in the way of that.

* The third, and final head represents ascendancy. This part of the body that allows the beast to demonstrate dominance in any situation.

* Physical features of validity include:

* Standard looking eyes, of course including depth. This head is very consistent with that of a dog. You can immediately tell this is the stronghold of the beast; around it’s jaw there is a metal plate fastened, almost as if he were born that way. Solid and very secure in its place. The tail is that of a normal dog, except for the fact that at either end (base and tip) are each fastened metal plates, following the same design as the one placed around the jaw.

* Physical features of animosity include:

* This part of the beast is hellish in nature. Vibrant, glowing reddish/orange eyes, full of (pain, disgust, and betrayal). It’s teeth are stained with the blood of his previous master, and with that taste forever in his mouth he seeks revenge on the one that left him alone. The tail is a raging fire, if it were not for the definite shape of a tail you would not be able to notice this was even part of a dog. Again, like the eyes, bright red-orange. It emits a glow and leaves behind residue of the ashes from the past.

* Physical features of ascendancy include:

* Almost tribal in nature, this part of the beast is decorated like that of an ancient shrine. His eyes are made of hard grey stone, never changing color, never giving in, never blinking. Around his neck is a necklace decorated in the skulls of every person/creature that has kept him from reaching his goal. It is there to be a constant reminder to those that he faces that he will never back down. his tail is endowed with three stones (same look as the ones that make up his eyes). These three stones represent the present, the past, and the future (showing that no matter where or when he will never back down).

* The remaining body of the beast is the only physically connect feature that looks the same. Strong, muscle build (build like a male rottweiler). Dark coat (brown or black). The nails on the feet are stained in blood from numerous battles. And throughout his body are slashes and scars.

---------------

Crits always appreciated! :D

Tear it apart :D

J.Boswell Nice drawings, I love the way you use hatching. The first guys arm with the bomb is too short.

Malakai SinClair Nice concept and description but I don't think it fits what the creature was supposed to be. It was supposed to be Satan's hound who goes around and destroys, no need for any rational thinking. I would have loved to see more shading as well.

Anywho, here's my mine... I just kinda flopped on this challenge

Yay, there are others critting! Thanks for the words, guys, I'm also sorry for not finishing. Maybe I'll find time soon to do so! I'd really love to explore the concept :)

I'm gonna try to whip something up tonight for this week's topic, again, I haven't had much time, gah. But since there are 2 up already, have a few crits:

Malakai - I love how much thought you put into forming the concept! I must disagree with Justice there, I think it really fits the breef. Maybe you had to clearer on that it wasn't related to Cerberus, Justice? The 3 headed puppy was also my first idea.

But anyway, nice design. Did you get some inspiration from Jason's last piece for the concepts, perhaps? :) Has a similar feel to it, but that's not a bad thing! It's good for all of us to get inspiration and ideas from each other, we're not competing here. But as far as the drawing goes, some more shading would've helped loads. Some more details for the textures too, I didn't get the fire thing until I read about it. The top one perhaps could've used a wee more scary element? It's Satan here, after all! But you're doing great, man, you're pushing yourself here. Good job :)

Justice, that's a pretty intimidating creature you've got there! Some kinda hybrid, even, at least with those horns. So is he flying? With a cape? I must admit I don't find that too scary (kinda like...SuperDog to the rescue! :D), but the big claws and spooky face counter that. Big kudods on the shading!

I hope Jesús' PC troubles won't get in the way for him announcing the new topic tomorrow...

Justice Von Brandt

No problems here...

I'm just waiting patiently for the next assignment post lol! :)

As far as critiques go:

MnM: It actually took me a minute to figure out what was going on in this picture. That might be because of the lack of any sort of background.

The other thing about it is that you should watch a small animation of a dog running... I'm not sure if all four feet get off the ground...

Try gathering a little bit of reference shots (might help you like it does me?) for what your drawing so you can have a little grasp of how the dog's anatomy works. I'd say that the midsection is correct, but the angle of the head seems a little bit off (3/4 angle is tough!!)...

I hope this isn't too harsh, because I think you have the potential, I'd just suggest to use a little reference :)

Justice Von Brandt
August 22nd, 2008, 02:40 PM

Hi guys, sorry for the absense. Things got a little busy on the other side! Uni started again, so my free time has been cut even more, but I'm determined to draw as much as I can. Sorry I missed this week's topic :(

A few crits? Alrighty then!

Faust - The gritty atmosphere works great for the topic. Those are some scary dogs! Their expressions fit perfectly and and the colours and texture contribute to that mood. However, it has got that unfinished feel to it as well. That dark red cloud/smoke underneath seems like it was done a bit hastily, some more definement and a bigger brush + fewer strokes would probably help. But still a killer picture!

Justice - Some background or a little shadow would've helped to ground your dog, yep. Keep it in mind for next time :) I must agree with Faust about the proportions, though, they're not completely spot on. Double check his lower back and spine, there lies the biggest difference. I see you're fond of drawing animals, esp.dogs. Try to get a deeper understanding of their anatomy, instead of always relying 100% on reference. Otherwise nice drawing!

So, Jesús hasn't been a around, anyone heard from him? It's his turn, but he's nowhere to be found. Shouldn't James just put out a topic this week, then, they could switch?

Oy, Sorry about being gone, I feel like I haven't been contributing as much as I should. Plus I've missed so much excellent art and ideas. When did the Cerberus assignment start?

I won't get internet until the 2nd of Sept., so probably another week until I can start actually scanning things again.

okay, my challenge!

apologies for not participating in the others, i have been so busy recently! :( sorry! i'll do them if i get the oppertunity in the near future

anyway... my own challenge

i thought about this long and hard, and came up with this evil bugger of a plan.

Band of Mercenary's

You each will be given a character to put into a group, the idea being we are left with a merciless squad of bandits!

so! without further ado!

CREATE A CHARACTER SHEET! as if you were making a 3d model

The squad roam a high fantasy landscape circa 1300AD (medival context) in a desert/scrubland area hot weather, arabic/spanish/mediteranian style look

Asa - your squad member is called tomas he's a human, he's 51 years of age and he's been a full time sword for hire since he was a wee boy, scarred and lean, he is afraid of nothing. his armour has been patched together over years of adventuring, leaving him with a ramshackle look, he has a magic axe!

plasma - leona, shes 27 and a warrior feminist, she thinks armoured bikinis are stupid, she is dowdy overweight, ugly, and about as far removed from the warrior babe as you can get!

malakai - twigs, the newest member of the band, he's a cocky little git, always picking locks and trying to sneak up on his friends (and foes) he dresses in clothing that is too big for him and he's very skinny!

MnM - Jaques, the "boromir" of the group, always jealous of the leader of the group, dressed and equipped in much the same manner, long cape, light armour, a recent deserter of the imperial army, he has decided to seek fame and fortune with the leader of the band, called...

Faust - bren, the leader of the band people look to him for advice, he is handsome and lean wearing the same light armour as jaques (whom he resents as a challenge to his authority) (you and MnM will have to be in contact to gain a consistant look for the armour) he carrys a claymore, which he is an expert with.

Renegade - timwen, Jaques romantic interest and a pretty woman, 20 red hair and slightly too skinny, forced by leona to wear sensible clothing she is a bit dense... kinda stupid, but fights like a rat when cornered, fighting with twin knuckle dusters cum knives.

Angel - im giving you the support for the characters, a shadowey robed figure who appears when the group is in direst peril, is he a spirit, or just a benevolent being with amazing powers.

now then, i promise to learn everybody's name one day, but im really bad :(

and i've left myself out because i was unlikely to challenge myself with my task, so can someone else give me a member?

Hmm shouldn't you give hint of the overall look the party is gonna have? Just 13thcentury fantasy doesn't cut it, do you mean Lord-ofthe rings faantasy or carpet of bayeux fantasy? Also, what is the cultural context? Celtic, Northern, German, Roman, French,,, Very small information here. A good way to communicate this would be setting up an inspiration-board for us to get an idea (Y'know, a bunch of photos and pics of old farm-houses, armors, costumes, whatever floats your spirit.)

You want to have a consistent party so it's like you are a mini-art-director for this small gig, you have to do a bit more. (Not much though, I bet it's easy finding stock-photos that communicate your ideas).

Also, hat would you like us to do? Shall we do character-concepts or illustrations?

Anyway, here#s a character for you: Gronthor, he's like the dark mage of the group only that he isn't a mage but an anatomist, dissecting dead bodies to gain insights of the human physis. The group keeps him as a healer but is highly suspicious of his activities and a bit frightened too, since they think he's got magic powers using scientific tricks he learned from studying forbidden arabic books. Mostly keeps to himself and is very introverted, fights like a sissy.

Alright, James! This is a sweeet topic! :D I love it! Wow, my character seems pretty awesome. Am I right that you picked each one as kinda out of everyone's comfort zone? ;) Because that's the vibe I'm getting! So yeah, awesome. I'm gonna write down the description and start working on it immediately tomorrow :D Sleep now!

Just one question. My guy, does he only have an axe? Or also a sword, like you implied with his years of swordsman for hire, or has he just switched to the one axe?
Also, you don't mention his physique. I have complete freedom there? Because the others all had guidelines there, just wondering :) Otherwise this is kickass, can't wait to start!

Why don't we just change the whole challenge thing to doing a weekly one from CA

~Faust~
August 29th, 2008, 03:19 PM
I'm not against that, but I think we should at least give it a go for the rest of the cycle. On the other hand we can use this to tackle our learning-curve in a very personal way.

Mat Kaminski
August 29th, 2008, 03:54 PM
I personally perfer this way, but I wouldn't be opposed to tackling a weekly activity from the rest of the page... we'd have to pick a common category though... any thoughts on how to work this one out? (I agree that we should finish the cycle out though...)

Hey guys.

Sorry i was gone, my motherboard died, i had troubles for a whole week with the pc lagging and rebooting all of the sudden, did some maintenance, though it was gone but then bam! the damn thing wouldnt start again.
Was a hassle to find a replacement since its a couple years old, finally found an used one running around the city.

Im just finishing plugging it up, need to burn the hell out of everything important i have, specially my image folder, and formating it then reinstalling drivers and stuff as i was advice.

Im in a bit of a hectic weekend, let me put my shit together for a couple of days and ill try to get back on the horse as soon as i can.

Ill scan some stuff later, i was lucky enough to print almost the whole Bridgman´s complete guide a day before my pc went off. So pretty much what i have done lately is studying it.

See ya soon

~Faust~
August 30th, 2008, 12:21 PM
alright a first concept, MnM, if you're okay with the armor-design, I'll continue doing some 3D-sheets and developing somethinf more refined

About the weeklies, we could have a cycle like this again. only that the guy in charge decides what CA-Activity we are joining, for example Àsa wants us to make CHOW and Malakai tells us to make a EOW. We could still push us as a little group, helping each other out with overpaints and shit like that.

Renegade, no problem, man. We are all pretty lax with our update-discipline anyways :D

AsaB
August 31st, 2008, 12:39 PM
Nice seeing you again, Jesús, hope things'll start getting smooth again for you soon :)

But I've also noticed the lack of participation here (I'm very much guilty), but I think we should definitely not back out of the group! Even though we wanted these activities to be top priority for everyone, sometimes life just doesn't allow that. So some don't always make the deadline, big deal, we'll just try to hop on the next time.

We should definitely finish this cycle in the current format, but I don't mind trying out Faust's idea for the next one, that is each decided every week which CA activity we participate in. Then we could go back to this format in the third cycle or heck, even try a third idea! The bottom line is that we should all help each other as a group, give crits and use this thread for joint activities, however they are.

Faust, looking good! Really dig the outfit. Just one thing, aren't we supposed to hand in a character sheet, as opposed to full blown colour illustrations? I've only got some drawings so far, although I meant to give one of them a colour job.

Say, is the deadline on the 3rd?

Indeed, this is just a scetch for the armor-design, since my character has the same armor as MnM's I just want to have her consent before going into the sheets.

So I've been drawing a little less frequently and trying to get reaccustomed to school + work. Don't worry though, I will rejoin this one! I started a little bit on my assignment and just couldn't find time this week...

I've got a good start, but I'm sans internet still and can only get on at remote computers. I'll see if I can take an old fashioned photo of it and load it up somehow; but that won't be until sometime in the middle of this week. As per usual, my guy is a little on the dark, and evil looking side. My stuff is always a bit sinister looking it seems.

Renegade - I like the style of your character. Not so much the way it's drawn as much as I like the culture behind the clothing. It's like a cross between Baroque, gypsy knife thrower, and arabic maiden. The legs look a little disproportionately long compared to the rest of the body, but I guess that would make for a good fighter when it comes to kicking.

AsaB
September 7th, 2008, 07:30 PM
So sorry about the absense and lack of an entry! Uni got hold of me, I'm afraid. I still have some studies and sketches, maybe that can do as a finished character sheet? Maybe I'll get some time tomorrow to work something up :)

Fabian, congrats on becoming a carpenter! :D

Faust, you just put your topic forth whenever you can. The deadline for this topic has passed days ago, so I don't think there's a problem there.

Jesús, yay, a finished topic! That by itself is such a feat that I'm not sure I should crit it at all ;) But I'll throw a few words anyway out...to start off, her outfit is sweet. I can see you've done some research. I really like how you rendered the fabric of her top. Her hair has some nice body and highlights as well. However, her overall stance is a little off. I'm afraid that most women would have to dislocate their knees to pull this off! But ok, all kidding aside, just consider the bone structure more carefully. Some anatomy studies would help you there. I'm also a little confused about the right arm (her left). Is this foreshortening or did it accidentally become shorter than the other? Just some points to consider, otherwise this is a nice entry :)

Angel, looking forward to your 'sinister' entry ;)

Alright guys... I know that we haven't been participating much in the past couple of weeks.

Do we want to take a break from these activities for now and come back after the entire cycle has been completed (I think next wed would finish the whole cycle... b/c I think it is Angel's week this week? Not sure entirely though).

If we want we can talk a bit about the future of these and possibly just convert over to doing weeklies for ~7 weeks?

I dunno, what do you guys think?

We can start participating as a group in the weeklies just let the person who's week it is pick with one we participate in for that week. Sound like a good idea?

Oh... and I've changed my screen name on here because I'm going to be releasing my website soon... and Matte Art will better reflect my new website.

www.mattepaint.org ;) (will be clickable when it's ready... I figure about 4 weeks at least before it's done... but I'm going to be registering the domain soon)

I thought it a sort of clever play on words... Mat = Matte .... UGH I'm a nerd for that one...

Then I'm all for discussing the future/format of these activities. I really want to be better at participating, honestly, but I guess I'm gonna need a crash course in time management first :/

The CA weeklies look like great fun, never taken part though, so I wouldn't mind trying those out for the next cycle. Just speak up, guys :)

Oh and Malakai, what's with the name change? :D We call you Matte now? :)

Mat Kaminski

Hehe, I changed it to reflect the upcoming website that I'm going to do, plus my ultimate goal is to do Matte Paintings for video games... and my name just so happens to be Mat... ;)

I thought it clever, you can call it nerdiness, whatever hehehe.

As far as Angel and Faust go, I'm all for it. Me personally, I'd rather stick with independant topics, but I can see how participating in the weeklies would be beneficial, especially for recognition if nothing else.

Also, it seems we all need to work on time management, you definitely aren't the only one lol :) I'm going to try my best to get back on the ball...

Anyway, waiting patiently.

And yes, I'll just wait for Faust to get his topic up, then. Reminds me, I still have some sketches laying around since James' topic :/ I'm a lazy/busy ass right now, sorry guys, I'll get to it!

Also, Fabian! That's a fantastic sketch :D Love her armour and the obvious "don't fuck with me" attitude. I would've loved to see it a bit more finished, just like shading etc (although, who am I to speak...), but that rough feel kinda fits the character too, I must admit. Well done! Especially just for finishing ;)

angel2342
September 14th, 2008, 09:34 PM
Once again, sorry for my tardiness, but I just wanted to show you I'm not just full of empty promises to finish the assignment:

The support of the group

I may have taken the "spiritual" aspect in the original description a little too far. But here's my interpretation:

The other-wordly support of the group. Shrouded and cloaked like a leper, he has no name to the knowledge of the group, and his loyalties are unknown as well, but seems intent on helping our heroes. Some members secretly believe him to be a sort of lesser god with his glowing eyes, his inhuman grace, and of course his tentacled body.

This unnamed, hooded figure helps the heroes whenever in dire need. None of the heroes know who or what this figure is or what his plans are. His hidden agenda seems to be set on protecting the group of warrior heroes.

He only shows up from nowhere at the last moment before the group is done for, then the hooded figure somehow stops time and wordlessly assists them with either his Saracen sword, his appendages or other magical abilities.

Angel, look at you, finishing a topic! Just that is a feat here! I like the mysterious feel to the character, the big cloak and slighly obsured face. You gave this some good though, I can see. I quite like the concept behind it! I'll admit I don't quite understand the tentacles, they were in the brief? In any case, they're a little bright and dominating, and take the focus away from the face, which I thought was the main area. But looking good, buddy :)

James, sounds like you're getting some great opportunities! Best of luck with all that, I hope we'll keep seeing you around on CA, though. :)

Mat, nice, great to hear you're working on it! I reeeally hope to get some work done, but as it is, I'm looking at one hell of a busy week. Uni is taking so much time :( I've hardly had any time at all to draw, hence my SB collecting dust. I really hope that'll change soon...

Sounds like just about everyone is having that trouble lately AsaB, so it's no big deal lol.
My schooling started up not too long ago. Coupled with full-time job, it's a bit hectic at the moment, but eh, I'll try my best.

Oh, and Angel: Your sketch is neat, and I commend you for finishing!

I do have to say though, the figure looks a little flat against the background. Try maybe adding some bulk to the bottom of the cloak, perhaps use a big circle around where his feet would be, or perhaps drawing what's under the cloak first so that you can determine depth of the cloth.
To me the tentacles kind of bring him off the page. The sharp contrast in color. From a yellow/gray to a bright orange. I think you could keep working on this one and eventually perfect him, but I can understand if you want to move on for now.
I like how you do thick lines around the whole contour of the figure, makes it very "comic-bookey" :)
A way you could bring the face out better could maybe be to give him a sort of ethereal glow or something so that his features stand out really well. It seems like the picture kind of blends together in that area.

:)

Also PlasmaErnst: Post the update over here! :D The painting is starting to look really good! :D And congo-ratz on becoming a carpenter!!

Renegade89: This one is looking like it's coming along.
One thing I'd suggest is to start doing some anatomy studies, maybe even try to find a reference for your anatomy. She seems to bend at an odd angle around her waist. The upper body looks really good in comparison to the bottom half. Try drawing out the whole figure like you've been doing in your studies and then you might be able to see the odd angle of the waist maybe? Either way, I think you are progressing well! :)

Oh well, no harm in taking things slow, it's good that we can go at our own pace anyway.

Really dig the first WIP, Jesús! Keep those coming :)

Yep, I admit I haven't even started. But I've been crazy busy with this big school assignment, but that's thankfully finishing on Friday. I plan on drawing this weekend! :D And cleaning up my mess of a room...but there will be art.

Yeah, I know how that is AsaB...

Good start Renegade89. I think it definitely has atmosphere! :)
Maybe flesh out the colors a bit more and really push the values to the max! :) You're really onto something there. Did you sketch it out with perspective or just start tossing color around? Reference maybe? Let us know how it goes :)

As far as mine goes, just a basic scene. It's going to be a store front with a hedge in front of it. The glass is pretty reflective so in the day it shows the bushes up really well... but at night it's pretty much see-through. I've got a small start on the night scene...

Anyway, here you go:

Thanks guys, not very happy with it though :davi: I used big bruses first, trying to get the form but beyond this point towards polishing and detailing i fell a bit lost

Btw, Im not opposed to the idea of joining CA activities, seems fun.

Asa: Totally get it, right now im on a cramped week, waiting eagerly for tuesday, so i can deliver the last work ive been dumped last few days, getting close to the first half of the semester tends to get kinda busy.

Malakai I used this pic as ref. Using the activity as a study. I just went ahead with color and eyeball the perspective for this one.

Is Mount Avila, Caracas is a valley surrounded by it (as well as the huge guettos that are built over it)

Aight, seems this has become a monthly activity :) I recommend stopping this cycle and moving on to do the CAs weeklies and crit here whoever feels like participating. I know it has been a harsh time for all of us but it's not excuse for slacking! (That applies to me, too of course.)

Jesus: I like the way you started with your collage, but I am kind of unsure how you want to develop a believable nightscene with it. It's not only the colors that change, but the whole of the light-conditions etc so you set yourself up for a very difficult task!

Matte (I'll call you that from now on :P): good idea! I hope you worked further on this.

Not I, I've actually got my assignment finished, I've just been swamped with school and work like crazy. I'll post my assignment before the day is out though. :)

It looks like Asa might have disappeared because I haven't seen an update even in her sketchy in a bit. I dunno... but either way, you'll see mine in just a bit. :D

haha sorry, im alive. Had to bust my ass during the weekend for uni, worth it, got a 19 out of 20 in my last weekly composition :D. And two 20s on another two subjects, im going for all the aces in the deck this semester.

I admit it, i slack off yesterday, a day of sleeping and funny captions seems in order some times.

I woke up early this morning to do quick character sketches, i have a final assignment for that class, i choose "medieval fantasy war" as my subject, is a virtual cube, 3d model. Doing a bunch of research, already have my concept and ill do some cleaner sketches for friday plus designing a dragon ,and then for every other class of the semester until the final delivery, total geeking out :). Ill post some later.

I still want to tackle the night sketch, as personal study since the activity passed im afraid.

Faust: Difficult means is worth it :)

cool sketches. One thing, the yellow floating things in the first one, im a bit unsure what they are.

Matte: Go ahead and post those.
Are you right handed? if not you could make your process a bit easier by starring to render left to right.

Alright, I've got mine as finished as it will get for now... here it comes, tear it apart :)

I really tried to use contrast a bit to express night vs. day. But the night one ended up being not nearly as good.

~Faust~: Yours ended up being much more creative than mine lol! I like your night sketch a bit better than your day. Your day seems over saturated for some odd reason... I mean, it could just be extremely early morning I suppose. I like that little fuzzy thing in the bottom left! I want one...!
The night time actually ended up looking almost like a 3D rendering to me. Especially because of the lighting. Your mood lighting is nice in the night, it really expresses night.
I'm going to have to start playing with color again to get better at it. You're improving with it steadily. Keep going...

Okay, so what's the plan for the next few activities? Who's actually still with us to make a run at it? A suggestion for the weeklies I suppose could be that we keep going in line like we are, we just let the person who's turn it is have the say on which topic we choose. We all need to gain speed, and it seems like so far Faust has us beat in the speed dept. But we can persevere guys. Let's keep going...

Who's still with us?
I am.

What we can do is maybe post our WIPs here and comment on each other's work for the Weeklies or something? I dunno... I suppose we can figure it out later.
Another thing we can do to get back on track with this whole thing is meet weekly in a chat room or something to kind of get feedback all together and discuss what we want to do for the week?
Let's talk this one out guys. School's started and things are getting hard, but we can still find some way to keep going...

I'm not dead (yet)! Sorry, but I was just finished one hell of a week. The assignment took was 5 weeks in the making and I just needed a couple days after the final crit to cool down--and to tidy up in my room. Still need to brush off the 5 weeks old dust and more stuff. My fingers have however started itching for drawing again so prepare for more stuff from me now :) My hopeful drawing coordination with uni hasn't worked so well until now, but I'm gonna do my best to change that.

I must admit that Faust's idea isn't a bad one, it seems like the hardest thing in the world for us to keep up with the activities! But I think the group is a great one and now that we've gotten to know each other's style, strengths and weaknesses, we should keep up critting each other :) So yeah, doing the CA weeklies is a good idea and we can post WIPs here and get crits. Also, we could use the threads to get that extra help from our fellow members for personal projects!

But now on to the crits :)

Faust, you pulled off your assignment beautifully. Your use of colour change the atmosphere of the room completely in the two pictures. The sunshine effect in the first one emphasizes the happiness and childhood feeling wonderfully. The second one swiftly takes all those feelings away! The tentacles were a great touch ;)

But I must admit that having the two side walls completely obscured confused me a bit. Was that intended for greater monster/darkness effect? I at least think it leaves the perspective a little puzzling. But the mood in it is just spot on!

Jesús, are you still working on that WIP? I believe Faust has a point with the his comment above, this might turn into quite the task. But a good challenge is always helpful!

Mat, I like your take on the idea, to split only one picture into two. The perspective itself looks pretty believable, good job! Such a dynamic angle is hard to tackle, so kudos to you. The uppermost lines might need a double-check, though, and some vertical lines need to be straightened a bit.
The day picture is stronger, I believe. The edges are defined better with carefully placed shadows that look right. Nice reflections, too!

However, I think you should give the night-one a bit more love. It seems like you rushed a lot of the shadow work there, I have a hard time distinguishing where some planes meet, the edges get rather fuzzy. Again, I think you should work on your values, don't be afraid of doing some extremes! :) Otherwise this is looking really nice, doing more of this would definitely benefit you.

Well. I don't have any WIPs to show off, sorry guys :( So Angel, do you have an assignment ready? I think it's fair to let him give us a topic to close the cycle, right? :) Then we can concentrate on the weeklies after that.

Hey Asa, welcome back :)

Yes, yes, i have put it off a couple times, i want to find a whole day to put into a few of those color studies. :^^;:
For the night one i also have references of the mountain and city at night, no the same shot, but still useful.

And hey were are Angel and Fabian?

Thanks Jesús :)

Yeah, I've also wondered, haven't seen anything from those two for some time. But time to check everybody's SBs, for me! Haven't visited for some time. So are we gonna wait for Angel's topic or go ahead with the CHOWs?

So... We call it a day, or what?

Mat Kaminski
October 28th, 2008, 10:58 AM
I think so... I haven't actually been on concept art in a little bit. Doesn't mean that I haven't been drawing as much as I can, but with school full time and work full time, it's really putting the pressure on me. I can't say that I don't draw a bit... but when I'm not doing the above three things, I'm honestly too tired to even scan in my art lol!

Either way, I'm still subscribed to all of your sketch books, so my email will be still getting daily reports of everyone's sketch book, but unfortunately, until the semester is over, I think I'm going to be dead as far as posting goes.

It was a good run, but it looks like everyone, myself included, fell behind on this one, but eh, I'll still watch and keep in touch with everyone. I can't say that it wasn't fun regardless though, and hopefully we'll be in competition or at the very least we'll recognize each other when the next ChOW or any of the other activities comes up.

But either way, have fun guys, and until next time... Cya guys later.

Hey guys :) I took a little break from all things Internet and art for a while but now I'm back in the game!

I'm afraid I must agree with you guys that we should probably end our sketchthread. But I still enjoyed it immensely and had fun! I have all you guys' SBs in my subscriptions so I'll keep on visiting as well and leaving crits :)

I noticed you two have removed the group from your sigs. Obviously it's up to you, but I actually quite like having it there as a reminder. Most people who're in sketchgroups never even go as far as having a joint sketchthread like ours, they only visit each others SBs and leave crits. So can't we still be an official sketch support group and function like that? What do you guys think? :)
