Hehe.
Great vid. Love to hear more about how you make Flow work with your brushes.
Laughed my ass off when you said "If you just work hard enough on that you will turn into Nox".

It was probably not meant as a joke, as i more sounded like appreaciatin for Nox's skill, but I could just see tons of CA'ers turning into little Nox's more and more trying to improve their old work...

All in all, this was one of the most useful purchases I've done so far from MB downloads... Looking forward to the next one....

This is great, very beautiful and inspiring.

On a side note, all the masturbation and ejaculation references are getting old, these artists and the skills they are sharing are incredible, but your making the community as a whole look immature with these kind of comments.

Just watched it! It's fantastic! I've never done any environs so I'm certainly inspired. Thanks MB!
A few questions: Removed because it was a retarded question...
Also are there any general exercise that you recommend newbies to do in order to get there work to a level like that?
Also for someone who has never done environs before do you have any general tips?
Thanks,
Jake

You're definitely speaking more confidently as you record these. Loved how you put those warmer colors in the rocks it really added some vibration if that makes any sense.

In the last environment you started with black and white thumbs, but in this you went straight into a colored environment. Was it because you've painted stuff like this a lot?

Thanks again!

So every time I start using Whit's brushes for more than a minute Photoshop just up and crashes on me.

Is anyone else having this problem? I'm on my Macbook Pro, running Leopard, and don't usually have this issue with custom brushes (all of M@'s and my own work fine)

Also I think it's worth noting that I tested this out on a few different Macs with the same result, so it's not just my computer.

Dude, I'm sorry but, he's hardly mistreating you. Massive Black don't have to release the downloadable DVD's. The quality of these vids is to the extent I couldn't care less if they say stuff like that. We owe them for the oppurtunity these vids provide :}

That was uncalled for. I can't believe you would treat a paying customer like that.

Would you prefer that we second guessed everything we did because it might offend someone? Do you think we're unaware that our jokes are bad and immature and stupid?

Look man, as soon as you start changing who you are to please everyone else you've already lost the game before you started, and instructional videos are already bland enough without forcing them to be politically correct.

So I'm sorry you didn't like a couple jokes... but so what? We're not selling jokes.

.PSD is in part two guys... my mistake. We'll also be including some supplemental footage (about 20 minutes) of unedited footage to show you the pace he works when we're not speeding things up.

If you're not planning on buying part 2 and you're feeling particularly ripped off that you didn't get the .psd then PM me and I'll find a way to get it to you.

Cheers,

May 29th, 2008, 02:19 AM
Looking forward to the secnd part. Was expecting to get the PSD in the first DL, but wasnt expecting the brushes, so it's a fair trade-off I think.

About the immaturity and so on, whilst I can find it quite immature I think it's a bit pointless to argue about it. One thing I DO think is bad though, is the comment about K-bots mother.
That was bordering flaming, no matter how you put it, and shouldn't have been there... So how about this:

Sorry K-bots, for the unnessecary comment about your mother.
Sorry Massive Black, for whining about something that doesnt really affect my learningexperience.

Nobody had to apologize first, but the thing needed to be said was said.

Fixed?

I've just finished part 2 and I want to say that I feel along with Jason Chan, Whit is one of the most helpful, articulate teachers that MB has provided us with so far. I don't know if it's because he's still young and learning too (not that any artist ever stops learning), but he offers all sorts of great advice, especially regarding values, that I feel pro artists don't even think to mention because it's so basic. But the basics are the fundamentals and its fantastic to hear them. I would recommend this download to anyone who paints, even if they don't plan to paint a landscape in their life. Thanks to MB and Whit for another totally valuable and worthwhile download.

Yeah, what John_b said... and the "real-speed" video was really helpfull.
When I feel like Im uncertain in my painting, not liking some strokes, I will replay that one, as Whit does the same kind of "trial and error" as I do, almost as much... I just need to practice so my endresault gets better (i.e. train my eye so that I actually see which stroke is good)...

Thanks for putting this up for download! I remember when whit posted this in the finally finished forum i spaced out on it for about 10 minutes trying to figure out how he got such an awesome texture to it. I did the same thing with the other snowy environment of his ( http://www.brushbook.com/imagepages/02.htm ) and yeah i'm very glad to see that you guys came out with an outdoor environment of his, i can't wait to see it.

Just got both parts last night. Watched one last night and most of the 2nd at work today. Very inspirational... and within 15 mins was able to achieve somethign that looked good zoomed out :) Whit, despite his youth seem to be a natural teacher, and has a wealth of knowledge that belies his youth.

The only (small ) disappointment was that the included brushes are only half the job.... they are almost useless without the presets.

One could argue that we will learn more by recreating and inventing new presets. I agree.... but they would have made the download more complete.

One question. Whit constantly calls up a list of presets just to the right of his canvas... how does he do this.... at the moment, I have a Wacom key set up to call up my brushes, but I can see how presets could be more useful.

kraal
July 15th, 2008, 10:53 PM
i beleive he is right clicking

JohnMalcolm1970
July 16th, 2008, 02:03 AM
right-clicking brings up your brush list... not the presets list for the present tool. I'm starting to wonder if it's a video rendering issue... as his photoshop layout looks kinda funny (for example... should his layers palette not say 'layers' at the top?), and he always clicks in the same place. Perhaps he's just clicking on and expanding a tool presets tab that we can't actually see.

RogerAdams

The missing titles on the palettes is a bug with PhotoShop CS3 and Camtasia. I've seen it in Jason Chan's demo and for videos from other providers. The palette is otherwise complete, just missing the title tab label.

Thanks, Whit and MB. I've got a good many environmental tuts from another company and those are very difficult to sit through more than once - this is strikingly different from that experience.

Whit is modest and incredibly skilled; he is articulate and able to communicate on a basic level, also. I really look forward to seeing more tuts from Whit. Thank you, guys.

I've bought and watched the first part - an absolutely superb demo and well worth the small cost, for both inspiration and instruction. Currently downloading the second one now - looking forward to seeing the full-sized PSD.

To those guys having problems using the brushes - it might be a compatibility problem if you're using anything older than PS CS3. I'm sure I've read somewhere that brush sets created in CS3 (which I think Whit's using in the demo) or CS4 don't work correctly with older versions of Photoshop. I don't know for sure - just a suggestion.

man I can't achieve that rock look using this method. I'm not saying it's not working, but mine ends up looking muddy and too much is going on. If I don't add a lot, then it doesn't look realistic enough. Video is moving too fast for me to understand what's going on.
