ROUND #116

-------------
DESCRIPTION

Here they come!

The Host - Many things are described as "the Host", angelic choires, fae armies. One of the defining points of the Host is that on an individual level, they are also called "the Host". Research material can be found on wikipedia and monstropedia ( http://www.monstropedia.org/index.php?title=Sluagh sluagh means "host"). This is an open ended topic. "the Host" can be many differen things: Angels, Demons, Faerie creatures. Your job is to depict ONE of them.
Keywords:
Angel, Warrior Angel, Sluagh, Host. Sithra Akhra

Thanks to Studio Colrouphobia for the suggestion!

:right:REQUIRED:
CONCEPT ART SIDEBAR:
A little easier this time, just include one rough alternative version of the character, or the same character but of an alternate 'host' race.
No side bar, no poll.

DEADLINE
WEDNESDAY, May 14th, 2008
The way the deadline works: if deadline is on a Sunday and your image is posted on that Sunday 23:59 your local time it's a good entry.
In fact - as long there is Sunday somewhere on the planet your entry is ok. I will make the poll sometimes Monday evening my time (GMT - 8 ) yet I'll have a look at the last entries.
--------------------------

POST YOUR FINALS IN THE FINALS THREAD!

Remember to include your nickname in the filename.

About quality - as general rule: if your shapes and values are not decent - you are out. Watch proportions, perspective etc. we need perfectly readable shapes and coherent, consistent values.

_____________

BE PROFESSIONAL - only finished and good quality entries will be taken to the poll. Oregano and Daestwen (yay!) will make the selection.

Is it safe to assume the "deadline" will be updated to reflect next sunday's date of May 11th instead of the already past May 4th?

Id like to participate, but if Im too late...well darn.

When i think of of a host i rather think of a normal person who is posessed by an evel demon or an alien parasite.

Mmmm I dunno - seems an awful lot like the Soul Collector CHOW from a year ago. At least in setup...especially since the requirement is to do only one of the group.

Maybe a more interesting turn would be to do three (or thereabouts) "different but similar" of the group? That way you can get the sense of the collective as well as see distinct differences within that collective group?

I'll shut up now before Teacher assigns more homework. ;)

Hatter, we've got something really awesome in the works for next week, so we totally can't run overtime this week, hence only having to do one and an alternative in the sidebar.

cool topic. I haven't really drawn undead before, so I think I might take the "dead spirit" approach if that's acceptable. Not keen on drawing angels or demons or faeries because I'm too brain-dead to think of anything that's not cliche.

Either. If I wasn't clear, I'm not sure how much clearer I will be now, but:

Either, you can do just a different version of the one you're doing (so, for example, maybe different wings/costume, or the same character but as a separate race (so yes, fae to demon).

The Minions of Sitra Akhra

Sitra Akhra could be translated "the other side". Some philosophers believed that all things were created by and subject to God (including demons), but others wondered if the things which were so unspeakably evil had their origins in another realm outside of God's command, or at least if there was a place forsaken by God, or where the inhabitants had no respect for God at all. This produced the idea of Sitra Akhra, the closest I've seen to a classical Hell in the Christian sense, where the inhabitants are purely evil and have completely forsaken God, existing only to satisfy their perverted whims. The demon Samael (who is often equated with Satan) is sometimes said to live here. Any being from Sitra Akhra would be completely evil, malevolent, and very dangerous. from http://www.atomick.net/fayelevine/pk/demons/pk003.php

Daestwen - Since angels and demons can get quite strange looking and this is CHOW, do these have to be humanoid?

Daestwen - Since angels and demons can get quite strange looking and this is CHOW, do these have to be humanoid?

Gods no. Where would be the fun in that? :)

That being said, if you go non-humanoid, remember they still have to read as a character. I love abstract angels, but since this is ChOW, we have to get *some* sort of personality and character traits from them... So you'll still want something that can portray emotion, but anyone who's seen a baby seal knows that you don't need to be humanoid for that. :)

I like this idea but to be clear, for example a host of demons. This is an engraving done in the 15th century Renaissance, would this be a good refrence for a "host" of demons?

seba don't feel bad, I'm basing my character off the Fae as well, and The Great Hunt or Wild Hunt is quite "Host"-ful ;)

I'd show a wip, but it's way way too wip -- and since I don't draw well like all of you, that'd be shooting myself in the foot. So I'll just post my final when it's done.

I'd like to thank CHOW for re-awakening my inspiration to paint. It's been over two months and I was in despair.

CarolineBradley - nice sketch, however, I have two issues. One, her placement on the page has her head/feet too close to the edge for my liking. Two, the hook with the soul. It doesn't seem like she is manipulating the hook to extract the soul as much as the hook is extracting the soul as if by its presence alone. I'd recommend moving the soul upright, fastened to the hook near the neck with a look of terror at being snatched. Perhaps in a struggle to free itself. Think the soul snatch scene from 'the Chronicles of Riddick' or 'the Mummy (1999)', when Imhotep is dragged away by the charioteer. Both had good struggle/terror expressions.
Oh, and I think a Fae may have a disdain for clothing as being unnatural.

Fractalbot - I like number two best.

seba_boi - I like the first one's facial expression and the third's pose, except for her arm is off.

Cloister - lovely work! There is a interesting depth feel to it and I love the wings.

allocco - nice start, I love the top/left one with the cocked head.

bluebloodedpanda - the first one, makes me think that the sprites are ripping the flesh to get at the soul. It reminds me in a round about way of two ideas. One, the spirits/angels in the opening of the Ark scene in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'. Two, the pose of the tormented reminds me of the cover illustration to an edition of Clive Barker's 'Hellbound Heart' (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0061002828/tripps). As I said, not exactly, in a round about way.

jpedro - I like the fish tail feet idea.

MCross Another angel! Sweet, Mets not all alone! A Seraph if I'm not mistaken.

Arbu - I must say, I've never been a fan of the ''floating torso' concept. That said, looking at yours with the multiple faces makes me think multiple torsos might strengthen the idea. This is just my personal views.

PaTXiNaKi - Welcome, I like the concept of a ratlike fae. The right leg seems a tad to large and the shadows are not following the contour of the dead body. If the soul container is the light source, more attention is needed to the arrangement of the shadows.

Whoa, they picked my topic... now I'm going to have to do this week :yayca:

Blaz Here is a quick rundown of what it sais on that page:

SLUAGH
A horde of evil spirits who are after the souls of people on their deathbeds. Sometimes they were seen as sinners, or generally evil people who were welcome in neither heaven nor hell, nor in the Pagan Otherworld, who had also been rejected by the Pagan deities and the earth itself. Whichever the underlying belief, they are almost always depicted as troublesome and destructive. They were seen to fly in groups like flocks of birds, coming from the west, and were known to try to enter the house of a dying person in an effort to carry the soul away with them. West-facing windows were sometimes kept closed to keep them out. Some consider the Sluagh to also carry with them the souls of innocent people who were kidnapped by these destructive spirits.

Origin in Ireland
In Irish folklore, Sluagh were the spirits of dead sinners; sometimes the spirits of Pagan ancestors; usually troublesome and destructive.
They flew in groups like flocks of birds, coming from the west, and tried to enter a house where someone is dying to take the soul away with them. West-facing windows were sometimes kept closed to keep them out.
The Sluagh are considered to be an Irish manifestation of the Wild Hunt.

Origin in Scotland
In Scottish folklore the Sluagh were originally part of the Seelie Court, then they turned to sinners doomed to fly across the skies at midnight to kidnap travelers out late at night.
The Sluagh , also known as the Fairy Host were said to fly West in order to catch the soul of a dying man before it was shriven. This is the reason why at the beginning of the Twentieth Century in Scotland people began to close windows and doors overlooking the west side.

Just remember tha Sluagh are only one potential for this, just as much as any of the other suggested Hosts...

Original E - It's a good refference, but you need to make sure that there is only one character represented. The point of the topic is that it shouldn't be a repetition of the four brothers or the pirates ones. Just one character.

Tsujin - Thanks for posting that about the Sithra Akhra. That was the exact text I was thinking about when I added them into the topic description.

Daestwen - Thank you for picking my topic :D

All - This is very open ended, you want to do typical angelic being, thats just fine, you want to do something wild, thats just fine too... read the brief ;)

Seba_boi - Love her faces, and specially the second pose, those helmet wings are great! ^^

bluebloodedpanda - wow, the last of ur pics remind me to resident evil's leaker, and a bit of doom3 beasts. The first one is nice too.

jpedro - the second from the left has nice face, very evil indeed.I like those big feet, they are like flippers.

tsujni - thanks for the crits,i have change a bit the draw, and will add start with colors soon.Ur draw looks like some kind of divine being.I cant wait to see more. :D

MCross - Wow! Great armour there!I love the eyes of the pattern,The waist wing's perspective is a bit strange, in comparation with the upper ones.

CarolineBradley - Go for more sketchs, i like the last body, but the face is a bit wide?.Nice legs too.

Oregano How commited are you to that concept? The rendering is superb, but it's looking a hell of a lot like a rework of your sci fi alien concept. Maybe replace the Gieger skull with some apparatus or something.

A lot of strong efforts. Good work so far everyone. Not sure if I'm going to make the time for it, but here are some thumbs in case I do. I like parts of all three of them. Will probably try to frankenstein them together for a final concept. Anyone partial to one or the other?

I decided to go ahead and move foward with combining the three char ideas. I really want to try and work some of that tattered nightmare feeling from the wolf in but..... we'll see. A.D. anyone?

Coloured, and we'll see what I do with it from here. A background isn't likely lol. Going to have to hit this back later, and see what's up with the sidebar. Like am I covered because I thumbed out and combined three alts, or do I need to like reverse engineer this sucker to make an alt.

Bounced an amzing amount of lights off of things that probably just aren't noticable. Answered the question bothering me of how the hell does it's knees move. Tightened up the wrappings. Messed around with the tentacles since some appeared to be of very suspicious origin. brought the outside leg further out pushed the inside leg further in. Is it obvious that im going for a Host that is part of some greater group of hosts all chained together through endless realities and plains of existance? I hope so. lol

Felt like the wrapping had lost too much of it's pleathery look. And what the hell is it doing if it's not eating. I'll see how I like the changes after I get the hell away from it for the night.

Studio Col.., Patxinaki, kingkidd, vibhas virwani:
Thanks a lot for the nice feedback on my demon! :) :sungod:

Ridz: Your play looks very interesting.

tsujni: I'm very curious about where you'll take that entity.

oregano: The concept doesn't catch me, so far... but the hands especially are very well drawn.

kingkid: Nice drawing. Let's see what kind of colours and background you'll end up with. The figure is rather close to a normal human male, so the paint will make the character-concept to a large extent, I guess (and the piercings...of course).

Arbu: Looks interesting so far... I like the spidery scribbly line-work

Adele: It is special.

algenpfleger: Looks dramatic so far.

tsabu: Imo that figure would look better if she had longer and stronger legs. The head is very dominating, right now.

patxinaki: The front leg (his left) is righfully larger, but I think you've increased its size too far... imo the leg seems to be meters in front of the fellow. The soul-streak looks interesting.

fractalbot: I personally prefer nr 2, so far.

MCross: Nice armour-work. Watch the butt-end of the pole... it's not lining in with the rest of the spear.

Studio Col: Very disgusting and interesting face. Be careful to not give the armour-necklace-thing too much visual power. I think the face should remain the main centre of interest.

seba boi: Nice sketches. The female look very traditionally faerie... but I can't wait to see how that "razor-wheel" and the head-wings are turning out.

blueblodded panda: You seem to have no lack of ideas...

jpedro: Nice falling-flying motions

I know I didn't comment everyone's stuff... I couldn't find any more words of "interest" atm... sorry. :(

You're not meaning the one with "Master Chief" are you? (this one: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=210140&stc=1&d=1191094313)
Because I don't see the similiarity, unless you're talking about them being lanky freaks?

Point taken on the Gieger skull. I'm probably going to finish this one out, because *I* like him, even if nobody else does :ore:

Thanks :) - tho do you have any actual crits on him? I mean for example *why* he doesn't catch you? What's throwing the image for you?

Thanks for the feedback guys, I appreciate it!

i just realised that this is project 16 and not 15. in my own haste and lack of concentration, i saw the words "read the brief" and so automaticly thought they were the same bief, and so just didn't even look at the project discription (AGAIN). Any chance we're going to go back to a simple heading again, yes i know obvious, direct word headed projects (the host, canibal bob, or the donkey who flew in a jet propelled hot air balloon) look so boring, but hey they have never failed so far. If it aint broken, don't try fixing it.

The main reason I've started shying away from including a summary in the title is because I want people to READ THE BRIEF - which hasn't been happening much in recent rounds.

If the title for this week was "CHOW 116 :: THE HOST" I promise you, someone would do a picture of someone in a tux or evening gown at a party. I swear to god - you so know it's true.

We'll go back to the standard here in a bit. But for now, I think it's important that we focus on reading the brief :geekg:

Oregano: I think it is mostly a matter of personal opinion.. which is why, I guess, I didn't add any constructive crits. The skeletal goblin-head...with an alien protrusion on the back... I don't know, but it feels very standard to me.
If I'm being hard on you, it is because I know you're good... The detail I do like is the highly placed and clearly defined nipples.

I know my own entry isn't that orignal, so by no means is this any comparative crit...
Anyway, as I said... this might all be a matter of taste...
Nice drawing, anyway!

Oregano "Masterchief", lol, but yeah that's the one. It just made me recall it right away. As for actual Crits, your render of this is so superb it's hard to find any fault with it. Someone might be able to but not me. How bout some ultra anal observation then due to the fact your at the level you are as an artist. The right inside arm's skin appears loose and slippery, the outside left appears tight and shiny. If it's intended that they should be different you might want to push one of them further in it's direction so it doesn't appear inconsistent. Something seems off about the right inside shoulder aswell. It seems like that shoulder is small and flat and round while there are all these cool layers built up on the outside left arm. Again, it's not so different as that it seems intentional. You've obviousely got it scanned, I might be telling you something you already know but put it in photoshop and flip it horizontal and see what you see. Then you can go back to it on paper and render it the rest of the way out. I hope that's useful and not annoying.

As for the concept I think what's bothering me about it is that I want to see small articulating robotic appendages coming out of the back of the head sinisterly awaiting their chance to be used. Right now it's making me think contemplative vampire.

wow, a lot of stuff here!,today i was visiting the hospital,a surgical operation of my father in law. He's fine now.I have drawn nothing, but i ll give my hole next afternoon for this.

my opinion (and excuse my poor english)

tsabu - Try to do a more dinamic pose, its too rigid, i have allways the same problem and i used to think what is the pose i'm looking for, and how can it be drawn in a "realistic" way.Use some refs it ll help you.

algenpfleger - Is she seducing him?and in the other hand taking his soul?what a bia... ^^ With such girls ill give my soul without thinking.

Adele - The arms and legs can't be apreciated well, a bit long too.The hair needs to show movement, work a bit more that and it ll look than its ready flying. Nice soul-containers ^^

Arbu - Much better! i really love the look of that sluagh, and for the flying thing. What about the souls, with the shape of crows? or some bad bird? u know something etereal with any bird shape.

kingkidd - Nice clothes!, i cant see his left leg, maybe u need to show a bit more of it, or make the cloak adapt at his outline.

oregano - Wo!, i love the face and hand, the chest is a bit messy. Another thing, is the width of the neck or maybe are that small pectorals fault, but its a demon and ur desing!.Anyway its georgeus that detail with the pencils

Arteater - a demon and a poor guy :d that looks a bad ending for him ^^

Ridz - Love the "blue" girl pose, a lot.The other one is the soul?, it looks like a yin yan form. In my city there is a symbol like that form too is called the "lauburu" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauburu

ManaBurn - My favourite is the leach, Nice hair on the big one (the fourth).Maybe take care of the proportions of the body (if u want to make it a bit "realistic")

Bendragon- I think the outline is not well defined, but its a sketch and its normal.Waiting for more progress. I like the green/browns colors ^^

MonkeYoakum - I love the head, that mouth is big enough to eat a docen of souls!! yeah! also the skull like head. His right leg is short, look at the knees and the hip perspective.

Fllnfalcon - It reminds me that Resident Evils creatures!!, maybe u need to work more on the wings, the right one looks strange.

shardana - Wo! Nice expresion, what about trying a diferent perspective, i think it ll give an "extra" to that bigdemon.

Sorknes - Waiting for more! i like the wings ^^, also the colors u chose

Blaz - Wow! i cant say anything except woe!!!, love all ^^

My first CHOW and a first stab at Painter, or, well, the first, rough version of it. I'm thinking I'm going to add a little armor, maybe an ornate shinguard for the back leg and a shoulder piece, as well as have a the intestines hang out of the belly because I imagine it/them to be more gruesome than the current image shows. I'm also seriously considering scrapping the current wings and going for a sort of shivan thing with the bottom arms as bat-ish wings. Please critique away, especially if you can toss me any pointers regarding using Painter.

I love seeing linework, since I hate doing it. I'm looking foward to seeing yours painted. Feels very japanese char influenced, and I dig on that.

Mae I like it so far. Painter is a bit crazy with the opacity on some of the brushes. I find if you want to glaze it helps to put a layer at around 45 percent and use it as a glaze layer. Feel free to ask if you need any info on painter. I'll try to make time. Welcome to CHOW!

Plus, it must have some humanistic qualities/features to it or it is considered a COW entry and not CHOW... TSUJINI's piece seems to gracefully teeter near the border there, but somehow I feel his piece still retains some "human" insticts/intelligence/characteristics in his being... It's the hands... ;)

Seba_boi - Love her faces, and specially the second pose, those helmet wings are great! ^^

tsujni - thanks for the crits,i have change a bit the draw, and will add start with colors soon.Ur draw looks like some kind of divine being.I cant wait to see more. :D

Arbu - where are their entrails? ogh! damm :o

MCross - Wow! Great armour there!I love the eyes of the pattern,The waist wing's perspective is a bit strange, in comparation with the upper ones.

CarolineBradley - Go for more sketchs, i like the last body, but the face is a bit wide?.Nice legs too.

Studio Colrouphobia - :o i love the colors , and that collar ^^ keep it!

curly - welcome! i like ur first one,it seems to be taking his soul from the mouth ^^ , nice ones

I have allways color this way, i give the pic some flat colors,i make some quick greyscales to see how the shadows will be, and start directly with the color, only using those steeps like a reference.

I have never used to make a refined greyscale, and after that use the overlays, maybe because i have never practice that method i dont find the colors i look for.

U know its hard to change the way u draw/color when u feel comfortable with it,but i ll try ur way and be sure i'll tell you the feelings ^^

Patxinaki If you don't feel comfortable with it then don't fix what isn't broken. You can always do an effects layer in Photoshop and set the saturation to zero to check up on your values. I've been forcing myself to do an underpainting recently and it's been working for me, better then my usual hunt and peck saturation/value/hue method. As for the overlays you should check them out, their really cool for adding additional colors and variation. Photoshop overlays are the bomb really. Check out Jason Chan's quick sketch video to see some expert use of both overlays and grayscale.

Jeremy I like the outfit, but it's feeling a little bit like one of the village ninja from Naruto. Why not try pushing the char in the direction of something more otherworldly. Wings, horns, a head that pops off on a hinge to reveal a giant mouth, etc...

Oregano Forget the FB! I want to see some more of your sic WIP!

Just found this.. monstrously aweseome thread.

http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee236/berserkerp/Thehostcopy.jpg

Reminds me of why I stopped drawing for a while. Been real down on myself, and I just can't seem to break out of the same, annoying, stiff poses. I couldnt even make it look like he's walking. I'm so ticked. But I'll finish this tonight.

I can't foreshorten. I finally got biceps/triceps looking OK at least...

Blackrobin I love that angle you chose. It's perfect for the interaction between a person and your host. Your not far enough along to really hit anything specific. It's a really strong start. If you want the face to be more human check the eye position in relation to the center. If your stylizing it then I like it as is.

Update:

I decided to go with a more dynamic pose...so I had to do some redrawing. Still need to go over and fix the wonky parts (wings, cloth, and the addition of the staff) and then do the final inking and coloring. Ah yes...and the alternate version. I'm really pushing it....:eyeloss:

I've really lost all objectivity at this point. I keep painting and repainting the same parts at this point. Still have two days worth of time left to mess with it. I'm hoping I don't decide to just reconcept the whole thing.

Daestwen Sidebar question. Do my three original thumbs count as alternates to this one and cover the sidebar requirements, or should I be like drawing some extra things on this one as alternate? Do you want the sidebars posted with the finals?

Mcross I think your making the right call changing the pose up. Don't forget to leave time to do a sidebar.

I went back in the thread to see what you were talking about (next time, link me :P ) and yeah, they look fine. They are alternatives, after all, doesn't matter if you drew them first or last. :P

And to re-itterate for everyone:

PLEASE POST THE SIDE BAR WITH YOUR FINAL OR YOU WON'T BE TAKEN TO POLL.

We let you guys off easy last time because you weren't used to the rule yet, but I *will* be cutting those who don't follow it this time, no matter how soft Oregano wants to go on you. :P

Curly NP, there aren't any stupid questions and I'm glad to help when I can. If you open up the color wheel in Photoshop or Painter you can use overlays over the value wheel to paint the color your working with and then just eyedrop it as needed. There's alot of things to consider when picking your color scheme, but any reading you can aquire on the subject of color theory will really go a long way to making you feel confident about what your painting. I'm really hoping they go foward with Jason Manley's color theory DL sooner then later. All the downloads and DVD's take for granted the aspect's of color theory that as profesionals they already have ingrained into them at Massive Black, and I'd love to hear his take on something so important.

Studio Colrouphobia I like the veiny skin on the chest. It may just be me but I'm having a really hard time telling if those are teeth and it's his mouth or if it's a scar or something. It may be obvious at reagular size and getting lost when you shrink it down, maybe just pop a tiny bit of highlighting in there to make it read better.

One question about side bar:
What does "alternative version of the host" actually mean? Do you mean for example if our host is demon the alternative must be angel or something? Or by alternative you mean alternative appearance of the one we drew?

Jeremy

ManaBurn: Naruto is after my time I'm afraid. I looked up some pictures and I think I see what you're talking about. It has a Ninja-like outfit that I didn't even realize when I drew it. Also, it seems the Characters in Naruto have the same high collar things.

I think I answered this already, but I'll answer it again. It just means alternative version. Period. Whether that's doing a different race, or just a different outfit, is totally up to you. :P

AND FOR EVERYONE ELSE:

As you may have heard rumours, big things are in the works for next weeks ChOW, but in order to arrange everything properly, you officially have a deadline extension!

Jeremy I dont watch Naruto (im not an anime/manga person if thats what it is), but I really like your graphic style and the character looks pretty cool...nice and simple and the bag adds a "highland" (scottish) style to it. So far, yours is my favourite.

artdwx - I really like yours. The colors are a little all over the place in my opinion, but the character is one of the few I've seen in this challenge that really reads like a character, instead of a generic (albeit nicely designed) creature/monster. I really think you should upload a bigger version if you have it.

ManaBurn
May 11th, 2008, 07:34 AM
Oregano I love that thing! :) It's creepy as hell. Is that the sidebar?

Daestwen What a cool chance to mess with our alternates. Thanks for the extension.

Jeremy Yup, I already noticed the similarites, and regardless I like the design. I don't think the char looks like a ninja however. Just that it reminds me of that particular char design they use as ninjas on Naruto. None of those things are bad. Hell, even hellraiser had some high ass collars, and hellraiser outfits reminded me of dune still suits. I just think he looks too human. If you make him part of a "host" of demon warriors, or a "host" of angelic rebels then I don't think you'll be runing the risk of being off topic. That's really as easy as maybe adding, claws, wings, a tail, whatever you feel is up your alley.

Pat Don't fret, it's looking good to me man. Personaly I hate everything I paint about 5 minutes after I'm done, at least it will push you to keep trying to outdue yourself.

Curly: try expanding your canvas. Right now your wings are feeling forced in to the composition - they're forcing negative shapes to become more prominent than necessary. Either let them exit the frame or expand the frame. The placement of the wings don't seem to fit the perspective of the figure (if they're normal wings).

Curly, I think extending the image like prepsage said has definately helped a lot, the only other thing I might suggest is that it looks like we might be able to see too much of her far wing ( I love the texture you've painted on there - its gorgeous) but I think the angle of it might be slightly off and maybe it's a bit too far forward and close to her head - I'm really sorry if someone has mentioned this already.

tsujni : I was thinking of beetles too but ManaBurn sugested something very intresting! i think i'll explore that possibility and make a "contrasted" ilustration with the ugly main guy and beautiful wingy fellas.. and in that way, they would defenetly be more reliable to be the host, insted the ugly guy. but i'm not counting them as a group, they are linked together, they are still part of the one character i'm designing. As it is requested on the chow's brief.

Daray I like the composition, but you should be carefull with your anatomy. It looks a bit frail. You should at least suggest the hips under the dress wich is too flat.Hairs have the same kind of problems, they are too "generical", you have to put some identity in them.
for the colours, I suggest a visit to the bilibine's work (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Bilibin), it is always a good experience when you are going towards a flat-tint processing:)

what I wanted to say is that they are juste like standing upright with no wheight nor move a bit like a hat.
If you look at Mucha's work (http://www.artcyclopedia.com/images/Mucha.jpg) (easy exemple, but always an excellent one), you will see that he uses the hair like a mass but it keeps it's "soul.
