This is the sign-up thread for the future episodes of Cooking with Idiot: A mentoring thread. This will hopefully allow me to keep better track :\

If you are interested please sign up here and provide the following information:
1. Sketchbook and/or Blog link. Chances are I won't select anyone who doesn't have one or the either, so make one if you haven't already and get posting :P
2. What it is you think I can help you learn.
3. Will your schedule allow for weekly exercises?
4. What is your favorite kind of ice cream.

This is not a first come first serve basis. Please don't be offended if you aren't selected right away, I will be looking for specific things in order to facilitate my inadequacies in teaching. Each "episode" will continue for about a month and then I will pick new people for the next.

Thanks!

Edit:

Wow so much people signed up already... mind if one more joins?

As I wrote up above, this is not a first come first serve basis and indeed it doesn't guarantee anything. Please keep signing up if you are interested, I'm looking for a few specific things that I can work with. If I were a better teacher than perhaps that wouldn't be the case.

2. I really need to learn more about color and working with the digital medium. Also, maybe some composition help.

3. The next few weeks might be hectic, but I think I could do simple assignments, leading into more complex around May.

4. Either plain vanilla soft serve or Strawberry Shortcake.

Hello, my name is Levi. I'm from Wisconsin and currently studying animation with an emphasis on illustration. I feel my digital skills are a bit lacking especially when it comes to environments and I want to improve on this area.

http://bluefiasco.blogspot.com there isn't a whole lot of stuff up there, but i'll be scanning several drawings sometime this week.

A stronger skillset with digital mediums and creating environments

In short, yes it will. I do have class, but I have enough time to do weekly exercises.

My favorite type of ice cream... I would say french vanilla, but I've been on a bit of a mint chocolate chip cycle lately.

Thanks and looking forward to working with you,

Levi

2. I can see in your work a strong sense of the play between light and shadow, something I struggle with constantly. Also, your brush strokes are loose and painterly, something I've been wanting to practice with more and incorporate into my style.

3. Yes.

4. I don't eat ice cream. I believe this is the part where most people point at me and start screaming witch.

2-Help with Enviornmenting. To be completely honest I'm not interested in being a Concept artist but using the skills towards world building for stories/comics. The skills of speed painting and enviornment design I think would be a usefull if I could get a workflow set up. Also though I would like to bridge that gap between just my work and "pro" work I see that some of the stuff for example on my skbk page could be considered middle stage images so I'm also interested in pushing something to a nice finished polish. I'm really looking to learn what I can from you.

3-I would make time

Just wanted to add thanks for the opportunity I've already learned alot just from your skbk and your videos. Also wanted to add Extra-thanks for the recent video w/ Alan Tew it was Tew-tastic

2. I think you can help guide me in my further studies of environments, atmospherics, hue/value/chroma, and form. Kinda general, but I'm just trying to "push it" more in my pieces. Every day, I'm having little epiphanies looking at the light/shadow systems in the sky, and how they relate. My pieces are improving, but I think you could help me understand these relations between object color, light, and shadow even more. I think you can help me learn more of what to look for when doing my studies and observing weather.

I'm not aiming for doing any highly detailed and finished pieces right now, because honestly I know jack about choosing colors and values.
All in all, I'd like to learn a thing or two about how to choose colors that go along with each other and especially how to spot all those colors that are actually there.
I have to admit, the first time I heard skincolor is not just some random pink, but actually a crazy mixture of yellow, red, green, blue and who-knows-what-else, I felt like I've been blind all my life. xD

2. I'm majoring in animation but I LOVE illustration. My dream is to become a concept artist. I know it's insane but I want it. Bad. Ideally, I would like to work on digital illustration. This would include all the big stuff like character design and environment studies. I find a lot of my work is dictated by whim and I would really like more control. I think this would improve my compositions, color choice, and technical drawing.

In other words...I will obey. I'm really grateful to anyone who will take the time to teach. I think it's wonderful. And I'm not afraid of a crit or to return the favor.

2.What you can help me learn:
I'd say quite a bit! Specifically I'd like to get better at environments, as it's plain to see that many of my characters exist in a vacuum. I also love how many of your digital works feature the mark/brushwork prominently while still effectively conveying form and light... That's also definitely something I'd like to work towards!
I also feel that having assignments is the best way for me to grow as an artist, I'm a deadlines man, that's for sure!
3. Yup, draw and paint every day!

I know you have a strong focus on environments, but I think learning your approach will give me a much better understanding of all the fundamentals- lighting, composition, textures, being a little looser with my art. This would hopefully carry over into my drawing too, which at times, can turn into a very strict exercise.

3. Yup, if not daily.

Any news Idiot Apathy? So many good artists here, curious who gets to be the lucky ones this time :)

The one for May is already up and cooking. No thoughts on June yet, hope it's not too much to ask to wait until it's closer - I've never been much for planing that far ahead.

In the mean time there are tons of exercises in here I set up some time ago: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=76955

Some of the best advice I ever got was this -
Never compare yourself to others, only compare yourself to your past self. Improving is the only thing that matters, there is always someone better than you and there is always someone better than that person.

2. Well, like most people here, I want to learn COLORS. Because colors are so beautiful if used well. And, actually, backgrounds would be good too, since I'm usually so focused on characters that my backgrounds usually go to waste. And lastly, I'd like my [useless] art teacher to stop picking on my values after my 3 week projects are complete! It doesn't help if the picture has already been worked to death! The end. Thankyou.
3. Well, once summer comes around [june, july, august~] I'll be kickin back relaxin, so if ever I had an opportunity to get involved here, it'd be then.
4. I believe that's confidential information.
But if you really want to know it's mint and chip. And cookies and cream too.

Hey Idiot Apathy! I've been struggling quite a bit lately so I thought perhaps you or another CA mentor may be able to lend a hand and get me back on track.

1. It's in my sig but I've been bad about updating since starting work. My website is 2 years old as well but you can probably gauge where I'm at a bit from some of that, I guess.
2. After graduating from school a couple years ago I started working for a small MMO dev as an artist doing all sorts of odds and ends (icons, textures, concepts, etc.). Spending so much time at work doing things kind of killed my urge to work on things at home. Some of my skills have fallen off a bit and I'm hoping that you can help. You might be able to better gauge where I am based on some of the stuff I have on CA but I think there are a couple areas in which I know you can help me improve. One is line quality and confidence/focus while drawing. I feel like I have art ADD and I end up scribbling a lot and moving on. Or rendering things like faces and then moving on. Heh. I really want to be able to just sit down and draw but I find myself fighting with the drawings too much. And they're moving much too slowly. This might have to do with a lack of anatomy knowledge... perhaps some studies would help. I'm not sure exactly what it is. The other thing is your knowledge of color and painting. I am a complete novice when it comes to color and when I paint I'm feeling very blindly. I know some basic color theory but I definitely need more practice. Especially in environments. I'm horrible with those and don't even mention how difficult it gets when I try to put figures in said environments.

Wow. Ramble fest. Truth be told I just need someone to hopefully see some sort of potential in me and try to take some steps to mold me and guide me in a few areas. I think I could do some nice work if only someone would counsel me and walk me through the learning process with their fresh eyes. I'm having a hard time seeing beyond my own short comings these days. And it's frustrating. I think this just turned into a psych visit. lol Sorry.
3. Yes, if I have some exercises to be held accountable for then I'd do them. The time is there and I'm willing to make an effort if you'll only tell me what to do! ;)
4. Mint Chocolate Chip... y'kno... the green kind!

2. I have just started learning how to digitally paint, i've checked out a couple of tutorials but i'm still finding things tricky. I would like to learn how to use colours effectively and how to use them successfully in a piece. Lighting and perspective are also quite weak points of mine. I have no idea how to use texture successfully in a environment to make it look realistic and effective. Your work is truely inspiring, i would like to learn how to paint like you.
3. I've just finished all my exams so i have a lot of spare time at the moment which i am using to draw mainly. I'm away a few weeks in the summer however and college gets tough again in September.
4. Mint Choc Chip is my favourite, i'd choose it over any other ice cream any day.

Thanks :)

I basically want to improve as much as I can, I want to learn anything and everything you have to offer, I am 16 I have been drawing since before I was even in elementary school, just in the past year I started to study anatomy and shadows and proportions but I am still so novice it isn't even funny. I need deadlines to push me, I need critiques to make me cry, and I need a hand when I lose the way. I would love it if you did not look at my skill and looked at my potential

3. Being a high shool student my life is pretty bland and basic, wake up, go to school, come home. Nothing of real interest. I could devote so much time to this.

4. If I had to pick a favorite ice cream I would have to pick the kind I make myself, I don't really like store bought but man when I make a bowl of vanilla or chocolate ice cream it tastes so much better.

Hello! My name is Christie. I want to expand my possibilities as an artist. I've done self-help (being a poor recent art student graduate) and I think I've done very well considering, but I've notice I grow so much more with a mentor and have been with a mentor in the past. I want to not only break my illustration blocks but creative blocks as well, of which I find a mentor ESPECIALLY great during those times.

2. What I can learn: Porportion, Orthographic Drawings of both Character and Environment, Stimulating Environment, and you can NEVER learn too much ANATOMY.

3. Will your schedule allow for weekly exercises?:Yes, my schedule will allow for weekly exercises. :)

4. Favorite kind of ice cream: I go between the spectrum of chocolate to vanilla BEAN. The more indulgent and hedonistic the better. Although I would like to go and indulge in Ben and Jerry's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough to Chunky Monkey as well. I just don't want to be stuck on a deserted island and go, "Curses."

2. What it is you think I can help you learn.
Having looked at your blog and various threads throughout conceptart, I feel you'd be awesome at imparting your knowledge on environments and handling of light and color. My usual process for practice for my quickies (my finished works are a different story) is to take the light and color of another piece and try to paint something different with the same color scheme. At this point, it still feels pretty unnatural. I'm really impressed with your use of color and light, and would like to learn how you do it.

My skill at painting people is decent at this point, imho, but I feel like my enviros suck, and that's where I'm trying to focus right now.

3. Will your schedule allow for weekly exercises?
I have a personal commitment to becoming a better artist, and I paint daily, so no problem there.

4. What is your favorite kind of ice cream.
Mint chocolate chip, but I can only eat about half a scoop because I don't like sweets. In that respect, maybe Green Tea... hmm.

WARNING : Incoming life story detected.

Hey there Idiot Apathy. Thanks for giving us the chance to get some quality critique and direction with our work. My name is Campbell, and i'm an "animation" student from Christchurch New Zealand. I have always enjoyed art, but in my first year of high school I dismissed art as bollocks with no future "a silly dream". So i stopped all artistic practice for the next 4 Years. I picked up graphic design in my last year of high school thinking it was easy credits for a bare pass. But it turned out i was good at it and i passed with excellence. With this in mind, I enrolled in a Bachelor of Design. This is your typical design degree with history and traditional drawing classes. I blitsed most of the design elements....but when it came to drawing...snap...I sucked ... hard. As painful as that year was i trucked through it and for some unknown reason I then choose to specialise in animation. For these last 2 years I have grown to love and for the most part taught myself illustration, industrial design, traditional arts and 3d modelling, and out of fear and pressure I have worked hard to catch up, refining my drawing and painting. I now want to specialise in these two areas, concept art and modelling.

Im hopping you can just pick at my images and help me push my work in any way possible. Id be happy if I got anything out a class. I don't know how much time I'd have for weekly activities, but I'd certainly apply them to my school work. (got a big last semester project) SO just a little insight on an international level would be more that enough to keep me going.

As for ice cream, lite french vanilla in an oversized soup mug filled with coffee. Thats what im talkin bout!

Cheers

atm, I am a 25 yr old research scientist who has always regretted not going to art school. For the last year and a bit I've been trying to get back into it. I am now half-way through an HND in graphic design and illustration. I am also going to life-drawing classes fortnightly and about to start getting weekly painting lessons.
In an ideal world I would like to see myself as an illustrator in a few years. I think that my style and intrests are best suited for fashion illustration.

Oh man, this is such a great opportunity.
-Well I'm diligently self studying to improve as fast as I can, and I attend weekly figurative sessions 2-3 times a week.
Here is my SB: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=107078&page=4&highlight=kidape

-I very much want to improve on my rendering skills and values before I dive into colored pieces. So working in grayscale would be wonderful, but I'm definitely up for working out colored illustrations as well. At the moment I'm trying to master "feeling the form", and understanding somethings structure and then from there being able to understand why the light and shadow hits it the way it does.

-I'm available for daily excersises, get off my retail job by noon, and free to study the rest of the day:)

-Icecream of choice is banana split. Vanilla and banana works too.

2. Tom: you got some crazy good skills with color / composition / and applying the imaginative approach to that is something i'm really interested in learning. I'm only beginning with color stuff but definitely really am starting to fixate on certain colors that i really like to use. hope that makes sense. Speedpaints? How to do those cool recordings of speedpaints that you do? The environments that you do seem so effortless and yet believable... i want to learn that! any excercises that you cook up would help me greatly!

1 - Sketchbook here: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=2004966

2 - I have a lot of starts. I want to work on creating real FINISHES. As in, learn how to work up / paint up my drawings and sketches into true finishes. Learning to be proficient in digital art is a must for me.

3 - I am ready, willing, and HUNGRY.

I barely finish any of my works mainly do to lack of knowledge in what the piece requires. This usually is lighting and color. When I do actually finish something I run into perspective and composition issues that really degrade the quality of the piece. Guidance in anatomy would be much appreciated as well.

Hi! I made a thread, but I guess this is a more appropriate thread :)

I'll first state that I am a highly motivated person, and I take art so seriously that I quitted a relatively stable office job last year to devote myself fully to drawing and painting. While I'm starting to reap fruit in drawing, I find myself puzzled with color when I'm not copying a model or a still-life.

1. My work can be found here :Sketchbook (http://www.lfdp.net/artwork/index.php?cat=10002)
I made sub-categories in order for it to be easier to navigate. There is work that ranges from now to 5 years ago, so be sure to hit the "-" sign (= minus) next to the word "date" to have the most recent work first.

2. From your work, I definitely think you could help me greatly with color in general, composition, value; to create convincing and beautiful pieces from my imagination (as opposed to copying, where I manage to get some ok results)
3. "Will your schedule allow for weekly exercises?" Definitely
4. The classics such as Vanilla, but I also crave for more unusual and exotic ones, such as mango, French toffee, etc.

Thanks in advance, and how and when will we know we are enlisted, or not?

Hey, Idiot Apathy! Long time no peek! Well, I haven't been at the Peer Project thread in a while.

School and personal life has stressed me out, and my art is really suffering because of it, so I'll just put my name here because I REALLY need some help and have no idea where to go. :( So here's my info:

1. Sketchbook: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=91552

2. I think you can help me a lot of colour and composition in artwork. I don't do anything with composition, really. I find myself getting stuck and then just not doing ANYTHING. My SB is mostly line sketches, and the lines are bad, too. :P And with colour, it looks nothing short of flat to me.

3. My schedule definitely allows for weekly exercises. :D :D

4. There was a wonderful ice cream called Hot Tin Roof, with itty-bitty chocolate balls, crunchy sugar-ice bits, and swirls of chocolate fudge throughout vanilla ice cream. @_@ Mmmmmm...they got rid of it, though. Jerks. >_< I miss that stuff!!! :( :(

Ultimately, I'd like to learn to become a better environment artist, so that after the mentoring I can direct my own studies to become a better matte painter.

3. I'm currently on four month break between 2nd and 3rd year of my Illustration program. Ok, my sketchbook is in my signature.

There are many many, aspects that I would enjoy improving. Here are some that have been bugging me the most.
Um, I would love to improve my method, be more effective, faster and all the while minimizing the amount of mistakes that i make. Also I almost never draw environments so, my skills in that area are sorely lacking.

I can handle weekly assignments not counting this upcoming week.
