P.O.W.! Special Challenge 10!

Topics: Zombies, a short story in the public domain, or 10 (see details below).

Deadline: To be started 12:01 a.m. April 9, 2008, and ending May 6, 2008, 11:59 pm anywhere in the world.

Standard Comic Book Size:

--Trim size: 6 5/8" x 10 1/4"
--Live art area: 6" x 9"
--Bleed size before trimming: 6 7/8" x 10 1/2" (1/8" in all directions)

See the READ THIS FIRST thread for all specs.

This Challenge consists of writing, drawing, and painting/coloring a standard comic to the specs posted, over a period of one month. It is open to anyone who wants to give it a try. You can choose one of the THREE topics, or if you feel lucky and ain't got nothin' else to do, you can actually do two or even ALL three to be treated as separate entries! Just keep in mind, you'll be competing with yourself.

TOPICS: The brainless masses have spoken through our poll and the results are in. The top three choices are...

Zombies
Hopefully, any treatment or approach you can come up with that hasn't been worked to death previously. The term Zombie classically can be either the Caribbean I-was-in-a-hole-but-now-I'm-not type associated with Voodoo religions, or the I-was-dead-now-I-eat-brains type of Undead popular in the movies since the 1970s.

Any short story in the public domain
Wide open. ANY story in any genre, as long as it was originally published before 1923 (There are exceptions in later years up to the 1960s but it's complex and I don't think we should push it unless you can prove it to me beyond all shadow of a doubt). There's a lot of science fiction, horror, romance, western, children's and fantasy out there that are fair game, so go for it.

10 (Ten)
To be interpreted as a number, theme, symbol, measure, or anything else you can come up with. This is REALLY wide open. Good luck.

You can do one of these, two of these, or all three (see additional notes below in the page count section).

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: You are getting a full month for this one, so it MUST be a finished product. NO roughs, NO quicky slop, with a professional level approach and feel to the entire entry. Color would be nice, but the basic art and layout are more important, so black and white is perfectly acceptable if you don't feel comfortable with coloring.

Use this thread to post WIPs and questions if you wish, if you'd like some crits and help.

NUMBER OF PAGES: To give everyone a chance, even the rank amateurs who have never tried a comic before, I'm keeping the MINIMUM number of pages low--6 (six)--to a MAXIMUM of 16, which can be extended by request to maybe 20 if someone thinks he/she is on a roll and can use the extra pages.

Your entire comic can be ONE of the topics above. That would be a single entry.

If you choose to do two or all of the topics above as separate unrelated comics, you can, which would mean that you are entering EACH as a separate entry--which also means you're competing against yourself in the polls.

The comics are to be done to the standard specs we have used from the beginning. We will have a final poll for voting, AND I may ask a few of the pros to stop in and help to give some special "awards of excellence" in addition to the poll winner. These would be based on design, inking, coloring, etc., and other criteria that are important individually to the comics industry.

A new thread will be created for the final entries. Do NOT post them in this thread.

Good luck. Trash talk is mandatory.

You could do what I do. Take your piece of paper and a ruler and draw a box on the paper the size of the bleed area lightly with a 4H pencil. Then 1/8" inside that (all around) draw the box for the trim area. This should be easy enough with a ruler if you work at actual size. If you use bigger paper and shrink the image for the internet then you would need to multiply box size numbers upward with a calculator. Multiplying will be easier to do if you use the metric or decimal numbers in the "read this first" rather than the fractions. I suspect you are working at actual size for ease of scanning anyway. After I make the first page this way I put away my ruler and just measure where the lines go on the other pages using the lines I drew on the first page. I draw the lines clear off the edge of the paper to make this easy.

The really critical thing for your drawings is to stay inside those two boxes. If you want, you can then draw a box inside them for the live art area. Alternatively you can always just remember never to get any closer than 1/8" to the inside box so, even if the chopping machine misses on the inside, your artwork will still show. Maybe you could draw a third boundary box 1/8" inside the second one, and then just stay inside those three lines all the way around so you know for sure you are clear of all but a really bad chopping machine.

When you are done with your actual drawing you can erase these light guidelines, though I usually take a fineliner and mark in the trim marks at the corners first. (Pointing to the corners of the middle box of the three boxes you drew). This erasing is pretty easy if you have inked the drawing since the eraser will only remove the pencil. Of course, if you are going to color with pastel rather than watercolor or digital then the final erasing step is a pain in the ass and you probably want to just cover your boxes with the pastel or erase the guidelines before you color.

Millions of brain-eating zombies went on a rampage today after a failed experimental drug trial near Paris. Moving across all of Europe in a swath of gory destruction, they ultimately were able to infiltrate the airlines and shipping ports, giving them access to the United States. At least 300,000 made it to US shores and immediately began attacking the public to acquire the brains they needed to survive.

All 300,000 died (again) of hunger in less than 6 hours after failing to find anything edible...

I'll see if I can put some bugs having sex with something in mine, old cat....

I'm kinda torn between two topics too... I was gonna ask if doing a long narrative poem telling a story from start to end would be ok for the public domain one...

.... And after waking up after a nap I have this zombie story in my head that I just can't get rid of....

Sorknes, is the poem an original by you? If so, it would only count if you allowed it to enter the public domain, but the art would be yours to copyright.

Or is it already in the public domain? If so, you're home free.

I was thinking of a couple of poems I know of that was made way before I was born *lol*

But it said "short story", so I wasn't quite sure if 1800 - early 1900 poems would count as a "short story"? (poems - short story, didn't know how nitpicking it was on the terms... )

Seems it is, so then I'll start thinking if I wanna do that one or the zombie :)

To confirm--poems are okay. In fact, Poe's Raven is a poem.

I might even do "There once was a zombie from Nantucket..." or one of the obscene poetic sea chanties I have from the 18th century... :P

Alright, trying to make this thing into roughs.

If having a piece like this (roughly), I would have to make the clear lines at the stipled lined called "live area", and then I'd have to make sure colours that would bleed out of the page in the "bleed area", right?

OK, I downloaded your 300 dpi tiff. If I turn that into 96 dpi, I have a 8.5 x 13. If I trim that down to bleeding area, I get 6.88 x 10.45. If I trim that down to live area I get 6.82 x 8.99

What am I missing? *lol*

You could always do giant zombie bugs (that way you get to kill two very cool birds with one stone).

I think I'm going to have to do the zombie story rather than the 'public domain' thing. I've written the scripts for both ideas now and the public domain one (a take on 'The Student of Prague') came out at twenty-two pages that can't really be edited down (I may post it on the non-competitive board, though).

So, zombie-infested sewers it is, then!:eyeloss:

I already PM'ed my mentor, arttorney , about this..

Hi,

My mentor, Arttorney, wants us (the mentee group ) to join in a P.O.W.
But above is stated ;

"NO roughs, NO quicky slop, with a professional level approach and feel to the entire entry. "

I have no experiences in this kind of things, and overall my drawing skills basically suck.

But i would like to test myself.. and perhaps put something up since I recently purchased a Wacom tablet..

Can I join?

Dutchdevil, my comment is aimed at the near pros who slack off. Give it all your worth and you'll be fine.

Sorkness, do you work at actual size? If you do, just draw a 6x9 area for your live area and center it in a 6-7/8" x 10-1/2" area. You don't have to worry about the trim while drawing because it's so close to the bleed size.

If you work up in size, just do it at 150%. That way, you can almost do it in your head--add 1/2 of every number to itself.

The process of going through Illustrator to a jpeg through an upload through a download through a printer can distort just about anything. How do you think they get away with all that "enlarge your penis" spam?

What you have is close enough if you're working at 300ppi because it can be enlarged or reduced a bit without any trouble for reproduction.

Kmadden, if you think you can handle a 22-pager without time problems, go for it. For the record, I'll accept anything worthwhile up to 24 pages as long as it's decent...I figured this was going to happen with the "public domain" topic anyway because there aren't all that many short stories that lend themselves to short graphic interpretations.

arttorney
April 10th, 2008, 12:37 PM
I found the page length thing to be a bit of a challenge, but I had to remove a lot of dialog and circumstances that modern sensibilities would regard as racist anyway. I hope Poe can forgive me for going all PC on him. I'd like this to be a story everybody can enjoy. Hope my application of Occam's Razor doesn't make the story line unintelligible.

In my prior experience, cranking out 6+ pages on the last day or two will lead to a sorry result. (e.g. my one day POW 9 entry) I'm glad to see some people are going to pace themselves. My page 1 for this is penciled but it's too big for my scanner and too light for my camera. I'll show it inked in a day or two.

Dutchdevil- The way you can get experience is to do one. Work hard. Draw your best. Get some WIPs done early so people can help you sharpen it up.

AAAAAARGH! Now I need to choose between them again! I'm going to have to resort to the good ol' coin toss for this 'un.

Thanks for the page extension, and I shouldn't have too much trouble with the time limit (I'm the fastest draw in the west! Well... west Oxford, that is...)

There will obviously be a lot more detail on these pages when I color them. I will probably have a round of inking internal to the panels too. For me, it's less time consuming than the lettering. As you might guess, I will also image them properly for the finals thread.

mffggrrraaa....

that's zombie talk for "Arttorney, I'd suggest placing the text after the artwork has been drawn. While it is an intigral part of the panels and it must be planned for, when you lock it in first by inking it...you lock in your composition. If you look at the process of say a Staz Johnson (or any other pro)you will notice the images are drawin in first. After the images are drawn in pencil, you get the ink, and lettering. The third step is color. This will keep things fluid for you while you draw your images. Remember, just 'cause you have the composition in your head that doesn't mean it will work the way you picture it.

Damn...zombies say a lot with so few grunts and moans...

Oh yeah, I'm awake...and I'll be in.

Just to twist you bitches, I'm still going to do a Steven King story. The Dark Tower series is one step beneath the Bible for me, so I'm going with THE GUNSLINGER. It isn't a short story per say, and it certainly doesn't meet the era defined by the only living organism to have taken in breath during that era...but it does posess "slow mutants". Which could be interpreted as zombies in the same theoretical sense that the creatures of "Resident Evil" or "I am Legend" are considered zombies.

I will be doing at least six pages of work on the passage of Jake and Roland through the mountains where they come in contact with the slow mutants. I must say that I bought this book while on vacation four years ago and didn't read very much of it. I had a friend who pushed it on me, and when I finally gave it a shot, well...it surpassed all things I have ever read (yeah...that means I've never fully read the Bible...I just believe it...new testament...old testament is no more substantial than any other mythology)

WTF...like you people give a shit...see you on the other side...

Glad to see things picking up with some wips.

I've known since I started trying traditional techniques in challenge 2 that I'm doing the lettering ass backwards, but I can't help it for the basic reasons Skorpi mentioned. I am also aware that people will say there is too much text and that it is distracting etc. etc.

I was kind of a prodigy writer early on and came to art later in life, so the words are a focus for me rather than an inconvenience to be avoided. I wish I had time to do calligraphy rather than metric lettering. I would consider weaving the streams of words all around and between the characters and weird stuff like that, except that I don't want to hurt anyone's eyes.

As I have been doing this one I have admittedly been thinking I am making more of an illustrated story rather than sequential art with little bits of dialog. Hopefully it won't be too bad when all is said and done. In short, the words are part of the art to me, but I can see that not many people would deal with them at the underpainting phase. This might be a mistake, but it won't kill my professional reputation or anything. (I think that ship set sail with the hockey comic).

Regarding: "Remember, just 'cause you have the composition in your head that doesn't mean it will work the way you picture it." Ha ha! Fooled you! I basically have no preconceived idea about point of view (or anything) except for the splash pages 1 and 7. Thus, you (Sundance) may be even more right than you currently envision when it comes to the impending crash and burn of Arttorney's POW 10. Perhaps I am first getting the things that constitute boundaries out of the way so I don't have to concern myself with boundaries when I have my brain in creative drawing mode. Admittedly that could come back to haunt me. It wouldn't be the first time.

@Skorpi: I think Sundance agrees the placement of the words needs to be considered early. I think he is just saying if I ink them right off the bat I limit myself and can't change them around if they are inconvenient to my drawing. I could see that, but I think more about changing around my drawing if it is inconvenient rather than changing the words. (I got to start with the ink somewhere).

2 pages, still in progress (the text is still german, sorry). I don't know if I should color them or not.

Maybe you should keep it german, it adds a nice touch to the story perhaps, but I understand not everyone understands it (my german is not really good but I can read it a bit). ;) Line art looks well done with the thicker bushstrokes I'm normally used to from your work.

It just reminds me of some of the stuff Druillet used to draw for Heavy Metal. Don't worry. Everybody loves your stuff.

I'm taking care of the lower boundary (meaning the lower boundary of quality in the competition). To further do things wrong, I'll be coloring with pastel rather than digital, or a water medium.

I was just about to be "that guy" and ask/beg for a deadline extension cos I thought the deadline was today. :) Luckily enough, I was wrong. Pieces are looking good arttorney....

Here's some of my thumbnails, just to prove I'm working. I'm racing to try and finish it atm.... I'll put the rest of the thumbs in my sketchbook. I'm trying to incorporate "10" and "Zombies" and my favourite of the ones that didn't get into the topic list... "incompetent terrorists".... :)

I really wanted to keep it to 10 pages, 10 characters, 1 death per page, but I might have to stick an 11th page on, sadly....

Important Notice!

I just was informed of something that is going to start on May twelfth which we will be part of. It will be major, and VERY interesting. Because of this, we only have a week between the end of Challenge 10 and the start of the event, which we will treat as Challenge 11.

Therefore...

The deadline for Challenge 10 is officially extended to May 12, 2008, 11:59 p.m. anywhere in the world.

This wasn't planned, but solving the scheduling problem this way should give some of you a bit of additional time if you need it...

@skorpi: i like your line-work - also on your pow-8 comic. very nice style!

now i want to contribute here (i'm not so familar with this pow or the other ?ow's here... -so i hope i don't miss something important..)

it's funny. about a week ago i made this sketch (http://bp3.blogger.com/_LwlrxqhhTEE/SBhA3lNLyAI/AAAAAAAAAWQ/XsXa06-a0yg/s1600-h/frauaufdach.jpg). the same day i read this topic here and the idea for the comicpages popped in my mind.

so i started with this:

Special announcement here...

The deadline has been extended (again) to the 15th of May!

Which gives anyone who needs it a couple of extra days. A special event that will be announced on the 15th will explain everything. All I can say is...it's huge, it involves us, and it will be one hell of a trip...unlike anything we've done so far. Every Challenge group will be involved, and it will run in a slightly different way than we're used to.

That left me with three loose days, so i figured...Why waste 'em. Use 'em if you need 'em, maybe touch up what you've got in if you think you need it.

Kmadden2004
May 9th, 2008, 07:10 AM
Ilaekae:
Wow... so much intrigue... a 'special event' you say? My interest has perked.

Skorpi:
Thanks for the kind words, and I understand what you're saying about the tie, but trust me, it's going to become an important factor later on (it's also a little reference to a certain Will Eisner character, but that's not important right now).

I really like your pages though, especially the colouring. It's looking good.

I don't know if this will hinder or help, but the DEEP thingamabob starting on the 15th has already cost me a bit of time, and I'm probably going to be busy doing explanations and clarification shit when it does go up, so...

I won't be able to post our poll until Friday late or early Saturday morning, so if anyone really needs the extra time, take it. When I start the poll, I'll just assume everybody that posted was on time, etc., ( :P ) no matter what the date says on the post.

I am EXTREMELY impressed by the work so far, and I just had a chance to glance at bits and pieces. You guys are doing good things...

Just to clarify, for all intents and purpose, the deadline is actually really late Friday 16th or very early the 17th. Hopefully, the extra time will help someone out there.

While I'm marking things final, with the extra time, I may go back and redo the photography and remove a stray mark here and there. When I do so, I'll stick the new final into the same place and delete out the old one to minimize clutter.

Just a notice--

I can get in, I have most of your art downloaded and ready for polling, but I'm having trouble with CA... It's refusing to allow me on the forum for more than a few minutes at a time since late last night for some reason, which is becoming a seasonal thing with me apparently. I'm going to get some sleep and try again tomorrow to post the poll. If I can't, I'll work out something with arttorney or one of the mods, but it should be okay...this has happened before, and usually never lasts more than two days. Sorry for the delay, everybody.

Now go do shit for deep! You've been sitting here reading this long enough... :P
