IF WE HAVE MORE THAN 45 ENTRIES - NOT ALL ENTRIES WILL MAKE IT TO POLL
A MAXIMUM OF 45 ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED IN THREE CATEGORIES:
CATEGORY 1 - Beginner's category
CATEGORY 2 - Intermediate's category
CATEGORY 3 - Advanced's category
ACCEPTANCE TO POLL WILL BE BASED ON THREE CRITERIA:
1: DID THE ARTIST FOLLOW THE BRIEF? (allowance for creative takes will be made).
2: IS THE PIECE ARTISTICALLY SOUND? (Is the illustration "finished?" - did the artist pay attention to anatomy, perspective, other fundamentals?).
3: IS THIS ILLUSTRATION THE BEST ONE? (reserved for rounds with a large amount of entries).
Depending on round turn out, the number of accepted entries in a given Category may vary from round to round. For example, if only 5 Advanced entries are made, that leaves EXTRA 10 slots open for Intermediate and Beginner.
Only Advanced Entries will be accepted for the the thumbs on the Queens Roster. If no Advanced entries are available for a round, then it will fall to the Intermediates. If no Intermediate are available, then it shall fall to the Beginners.
For further information on how this works, please see this post (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1630823#post1630823). (Still being updated at this time).

Okay I think I got everybody. This was a pretty cool challenge (and my first entry to the chow woohoo) If I say something stupid in these comments, ignore me! :P
Studio Colrouphobia- This is a cool design, and it looks very well done. I like the play on the parrot idea- never seen a pirate with an adorable little bird like that! I think the only problem I have with it (and I think this seems to be true for all the pirate designs) is that it doesn't really look like a "sky pirate". If I hadn't read the brief I wouldn't know that this was anything other than your regular, run of the mill sea pirate.
Hunger Artist- Your pirate seems to be the most original- it's very cool. Especially loving the celtic style tattoos and the mechanical looking peg leg. It might have been nice to see some varied expressions of Sam and Cynthia, the closeups seem to be the same as the full body drawings.
Joe Solo- I really love this one! You definitely seem to have put the most effort into showing the formation of this character concept, and everything looks really thought out. The only thing that bothers me is that Sam looks more like he's from a video game or an anime than a childrens book, but it's an awesome pic nonetheless. I'll definitely be giving you a vote!
rodimus25- You have a great style. It's fun and distinctive (I especially love the dog) Again though, the pirate looks like your average pirate. (I'm probably being picky- and I don't have much room to talk because I ran out of time before I made it to the pirate lol)
rodriguez- This seems to be a little on the bland side for a childrens character. The colors seem muted, and the clothes are very plain. Also, why is he standing there with his eyes closed and his finger pointed in the full body picture? I like his expressions though, and the dog is cute!
Bendragon- This one really catches my eye. I love your colors, very bright and playful. That pirates got some scary eyes lol. I think the lack of straight lines in the sword are sort of making it look more pillowy than sharp though.
f o x- bleh lol
Artifex33- I like this one a lot, it's very well done (although possibly a little too realistic for this challenge?) I wish I were more articulate and better able to express my opinions, because it looks like there's something strange going on with the levels of his shorts and the way the thigh of the bent leg seems to be in front of the other one. I know that the knee is bent so it's coming forward, but that foot is also positioned so that it looks like that leg is going behind the other one. Did I just totally confuse the crap out of you? Sorry ignore me lol
Teigrob- Great character expressions! I especially love Sam lol I just wish there was some color!
sony- Nice to see all the silhouettes ( I had never really seen this technique before this challenge, cuz I'm a total character design and concept art novice lol) Like I said to rodriguez though, the colors seem a little muted for a children's book. It's also kinda bugging me the way Cynthia's dress seems to be hugging the undercurve of her butt, even though the skirt doesn't look like it's that tight otherwise.
t i m o t h y- It's nice to see a different take on Sam, and this is a pretty cool character sheet, but isn't he maybe a little old? I look at that picture and think of the brief where it describes how Sam is best friends with the next door neighbor girl and my mind goes to a terrible place. (maybe that's a personal failing though lol) Hey I just noticed, why are the words on his jacket backwards?
mindlesspuppet- This is a fun idea, and well done- but there's almost nothing of any of the characters in here. It's all about the jet pack (it is a pretty cool jet pack). At first I thought this was Sam, but then I saw the braid and realized it was a girl, so is it Cynthia?
Chate Noire- There's not much I can say about this one except that I love it :^^:
Tommoy- Bright colors and cool style, but why does Sam look like a pirate? (he even has a hook hand) And Spot's kinda looking more like a vicious pit bull than a terrified terrier.
Flipnastywebby- I reaaaaally like this one! Reminds me a lot of Final Fantasy. Love the wooden swords :)
Catatafish- Yours doesn't really seem to follow the brief, there's no concepts or developments. I do like the sort of magical spin you put on it though, although you have a few anatomy issues.
Bullfrogg- Yours also doesn't really seem to follow the brief, but I love the giant dog anyways lol
yikes that was long

mindlesspuppet- This is a fun idea, and well done- but there's almost nothing of any of the characters in here. It's all about the jet pack (it is a pretty cool jet pack). At first I thought this was Sam, but then I saw the braid and realized it was a girl, so is it Cynthia?
The girl is Sam, Sam short for Samantha, and Sheridan is also an androgynous name. Admittedly I did put a bit too much effort into the jetpack but there's fairly good reason for that.
I thought in order to get a feel for the character and her world an explanation of the pack was needed, it also might give you an idea of how she would move through the air. Rather than throwing a generic rocket on her pack and proclaiming "there she can fly" I chose to design one that that could be fairly practical (as practical as things things get). Consider the rocketeer, his helmet is cool looking but it's main purpose is as rudder, which is a very important point of the character which could not be very easily expressed with just a single picture.
Anyhow, point-being, the girl with the braid is indeed Sam Sheridan, there was no mention of gender in the prompt, and I though the name was intentionally androgynous. I'm assuming this is why it's no in the voting T_T

I'll third the call for Chate Noire's image to be included in the poll. I don't see anything obvious that would exclude it.
Also! Be careful voting for FlipNastyWebby's image. I tried to vote for it and ended up voting for the intro text image at the top of the poll. Not sure what's up, but I PM'ed daestwen about the misplaced vote.

I did a double take when I realized Chate Noir's entry (along with the others) wasn't there. I thought that one was probably gonna win the whole thing. (I know I was gonna give it a vote)
mindlesspuppet- sorry, you're right! For some reason I was thinking that it had specified in the brief that Sam was a boy, but I went back and only Cynthia's gender was specified. It was actually a cool idea to make Sam a girl instead (although it would still be nice to see more of her) Sorry to see you weren't in the poll :(

Perplexing why Chate's isn't in here - perhaps it's an oversight? I'm gonna hold off on casting votes in the meantime...
I thought there would be more studies and sidebar detail drawings in this round, as per the brief...but if you followed the brief, it would be getting in the way of creativity! ;) (/em sarcasm off, i keed, i keed)

Hey Oregano, how come my piece isn't part of the poll? Did I miss something cruical in the brief?
Because I screwed up.
I'm placing it in here very shortly and you will receive some comp votes. Same for Tommy.
My apologies.
There were two that were intentionally left out: Catatafish & bullfrogg because they neglected to include the concept and or facial studies as requested in the brief. Anyone else left out was a mistake on my part. Just a reminder to myself *not* to do poll when I can barely stay awake :[ Anyway, again, my apologies.
~Oreg.
[edit] It's amazing Daestwen even lets me near the CHOW these days... from the looks of things, I missed the last three entries. So, Mindless Puppet is now in the poll as well.

I gave my vote to Bendragon. The Pirate is just too cool to not vote for.
No extra votes from me to anyone, I just feel like utilizing Android's "Hell Yes!/Hell no!" principle to these polls, which means only one vote from me. Close contenders there where, but Bendragons just was the "hell yes!" this time around.
Fox, Thanks for the crit! You are right... I felt I had to rush the process alot when I realized I started on it the day before deadline, instead of on the first day of the weekly (like I thought at first), and so I left out alot of ideas I had in favour of a "complete" with some props added...
The chick was a struck of inspiration from nowhere.. a play with humour since it was meant for a childrens book...
'll most likely evolve this character on the side....

Thanks, Oregano =) No hard feelings, I used to run a small challenge in an Israeli CG forum, and keeping track is harder than one might think.
Voted for colrouphobic - I liked the stumpiness of your pirate, and of course the chick =) A lovely addition.
Hunger Artist, your pirate is really cool (so cool I accidentally spelled your username "Hunger Pirate") and your entry would've gotten my vote if only there had been a little more character sketches - seeing this bad guy in action could have been awesome.
