Can we twist the definition of the title? So hot would refer to actually being very hot (sun burn hot), and pinup up as in limbs pinned together like a frankenstein?

Its just hard to make something unique with this. Maybe thats what you have planned? A challenge to end all challenges? :)

Yeah Zephyri and Also Kay will loves this sorta thing! Its their artwork to a T :D

HOT MALE VAMPIRE PINUP

have fun, but keep it humanoid. :P

Should we consider these concepts as more along the lines of beefcake for the pinup hot male vampire? Or not? I'm seeing some initial concepts that aren't necessarily along the lines of a sexy male pinup (well, not for me), so I'm just asking. :)

Wiki Beefcake:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beefcake
(As also shown in the above photo references)

Wiki Pinup:
"..Many “pin ups” were photographs of celebrities who were considered sex symbols...These days men can be considered “pin ups” as well and there are male equivalents of attractive and sexy actors..."

seriously..its one of my first attempts at a character so i could very well use some critics..used some ref for the pose but trying to draw the face from immagination that's why its all wrong :) had a massive problem trying to paint it with his head reclined towards the back expectially the jaw/neck area

anyway..
very promising start Lewis!!
dont give up joey-b your pic got potential. wings and hand position makes it a good composition too.

but its done so many times...

As have the many thousands of warriors with swords, fire-breathing dragons, space marines in tech armour, nubile young maidens in flowing Renaissance gowns, mutton-chopped steampunk men in mechanized brass contraptions, and countless other themes which seem to overflow from everyone's postings in these forums?

Not raggin' on you - just saying the "been done before" can be used on a LOT of stuff posted here.

I think Oregano is right - pinups have a certain campy quality - provocative but not overtly obscene. The beefcake photos from the 1950's are a good example.

Methinks a few people are going to get hung up or stymied on the "male" thing - I'm a bit glad to see it as part of the challenge - for those people who find it easy to draw voluptuous curvy sex kittens with very little clothing, this will prove a challenge. And as Mirana said earlier, "You don't know how to do "hot" or a male figure? That's what a challenge is ABOUT."

Aly Fell

Going for the traditional frock coated Gary Oldman look! Should I get his chest out then? :) Maybe I will! With a deep vampire scar across it! ;)

Nice start chaps!

Joey B - He ain't ugly at all! Just tighten up the composition a bit.

http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/7742/rought01re3.jpg

OK Removed the sidys, and the chest all exposed in the new one! Is he hot yet? Is he? Tell me? Pppperlease....

http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/7588/versionsbh2.jpg

OK.... final. Other things to do this week, so a quick polish and that's it. Decided to keep the coat. I like it. Love to render him up (ooh er missus), but not now.

And yeah, this was kind of the point. We get lots of boob shows here on Chow (and trust me, I'm REALLY not complaining - I love a boob show just like everyone else) but sexy + male isn't really something that we attempt very often.

I know very well that it's probably pushing some people's boundaries when it comes to what they are comfortable with, but let's try to be fair around here every once in a while, shall we?

...CRAP. Do I have time for this??@?!?!? *quickly counts hours on fingers* AGH. Aaagh. Must. Draw. Male. Pinup... omg... *faints*

Joey-b: He's got some nice "come hither" body language going on, but maybe you could loosen up his posture a bit and make that body language a little stronger. Methinks Latex would be a little too super-heroish for this guy, go the Castlevania route.
Scorpi: Mmmm. You're right about the composition, but this guy has a lot of potential *eyebrow waggle*
Lewis: I definitely see Vampire, but I'm not seeing Pin-Up so much. If you had him looking at the viewer, I think that'd help a bit. Like, "ohoh you just caught me in the middle of my stalking~"
Poshspice: Lookin' good so far! The sideburns are an unexpected touch, yet somehow do not detract whatsoever from the hotness. (Off topic, but I just picked up the issue of ImagineFX with your tutorial in it. 'Twas magnificent!)

Giordan
February 25th, 2008, 03:46 PM
Well i guess mirana is right if girls can draw hot chicks , i guess there's no problem for us straight guys to do what we consider a hot guy , and now that i thought about it i guess it is kind of interesting , oh and thanks oreg for the references but those were photos i was refering to pinup illustrations like vargas girls

p.s does the 3/4 minimum rule also aplies here?

daestwen
February 25th, 2008, 03:47 PM
Poshspice: Totally didn't see this until just now. I have to say, that's dead on. (I personally think jackets/coats are the hottest items one can wear, so keep it, I say!) His left (our right) elbow is looking a little funky... I think it's a little too high/forward for the way the lower arm/hand is positioned...

There are some great sketches here, but I have to say that only two give me any sort of "pin-up" or "hot" feel. I think some of you guys are going for "bad-ass" and not "if I was gay/a gal, would I like...?" If this were a FEMALE vamp, what would make her sexy to you?

In that spirit, here's a site of CK ads (http://www.davidtoc.com/ck/productpix.cfm?Product_ID=6)(you know...the ones that used to get banned all over b/c of their sexiness?). There's even femme CK ads to keep you sane. ;) Remember that the vamps don't HAVE to be showing skin--it's all about the body language and expression! (http://www.davidtoc.com/ck/ckad.cfm?Ad_ID=399)

True - and with sets and costumes by Edward Gorey!

One woman in the audience of that production stated that she would rather spend a single night with Dracula dead than the rest of her life with her husband alive.

haroldfay - One would think a forum full of life studies and nekkid boobies would allow for nudity. Of not that, then you obviously you need to get yourself over to Last Man3, b/c there are man-bits in those threads too. ;)

On the pic itself...I like the pose and his body (nice tits!), but the face is a little expressionless. Might be good to rethink the dead corpse accessory since I'm pretty sure that takes away the sex appeal despite what you've done with the actual vamp.

Daestwen - I agree w/ Pseudocog. Legs over the side would work, I think. I dunno what sort of blood-gasm your guy is having, but that position is pretty painful without resting some weight (arm, back or head) on something. Lovely hair!

Thanx for the crit, Mirana. I will reconsider the face.
The esoterical question is: can it still be considered a concept art when there is nothing but two naked people???

zephyri
February 25th, 2008, 11:28 PM
Daestwen: beautiful linework so far, he's gorgeous. Regarding the crit made further up about the weight issue on his neck, you could simply extend the sides of the tub up to be like one of those old victorian cast iron bathtubs, but love how it's looking thus far. Reminds me a little of Cavalcanti from Gankutsuou.

Harold: love the poses and the anatomy so far, though his teeth bother me, not so much for the attractive factor, but more for the fact they just look like triangles stuck to his lips... as they dont seem to follow the curve of his teeth or allow for them. But other than that and miranda's point on the face expression, i like it a lot!

Chickenbone: classic looking pose so far, can't wait to see where you take it!

Mylias: I like the suggestion of the clothing you've got going on there, not dissimilar to what I had in mind myself. I think maybe the legs could stand to be a tad on the longer side, but nice sketch!

Yin: another good potential sketch! Love the cross at the bottom, nice detail!

Shardana: ehehe the catalogue blurb made me giggle, and i love the head thrown back maniacal laughter pose. Looking forward to seeing more done to it.

Lewis: I really like the pose, but the mouth expression is spoiling it for me, as I can't decide whether he looks more like he's glues his teeth together, or is in a great amount of pain! May I suggest maybe going for something more sublime... a la "Nightbells" by Brom: Brom's art (http://www.bromart.com/gallery/DarkPast/index.html#) (middle of the bottom row on that page) but maybe adding some horror elements to it to keep the vampire suggestion in it.

And here's my first sketch.. might yet play with his hair some, and I have a border to add, as I'm actually killing two birds with one stone with this Chow, as this fits uncannily for a commission I have to do, a series of hot pin up guys with nouveau-esque borders.

Cheers Sam. Yeah, fair enough! I think it's time for him to show those pecs! :) I'm a firm believer in that you don't need to 'get it all out' to be sexy, particularly with female pin-ups, but he looks a bit over-dressed. As for the stripey hair, that's most definitely Dave Vanian from The Damned who can claim the white streak long before Mr Depp and Mr Burton.

Hmm nice entries so far.

skorpi - I think you may need to adjust how his hat sits on his head, or improve the angle a bit so if its being tipped from the head, there's a definite show of it.

Joey-b - Good start, but I think for pin up he needs to be a little less evil and more sexified!

Lewis - I like the posing so far, but I think I would prefer to have his face actually looking towards us.

shardana - haha nice, I like his cackle or evil laugh appearance ;) Would be nicer with a smaller crop maybe, other than that Ive no real crits.

Poshspice - I just laugh when I see this, its those mutton chops! I do like it though, and I do love the fact he in fact clothed regally. Makes him very suave sir! Interested to see where you go with this :)

daestwen - I love this so far, but as someone mentioned he looks a bit stiff or in a painful position. Maybe have him slouching even more and yet with his head pointing skywards would help?

zephyri - haha hot already and its only your line art! Very nice, I like the mix of the armour, leathers etc. Looking forward to seeing this finished!

So far I have been toying with a modern vampire, kinda city flyboy idea. Not sure if I should make the crop higher too, to show some more hair. So yeah mines clothed too, with a hint of skin! Probably pinstripe too >.>

Thanks, and no, no-one in particular. I've been doing a series of these guys so i have a file full of faces and bods that I mix and match from in a frankenstein esque manner, so he has the eyes from one, the tweaked nose from another, nostrils from someone else, etc etc.

Cheers Sam. Yeah, fair enough! Couldn't agree with you more, regarding females especially! And this is true regarding the white hair streak... eheheh i think it was perhaps the combo of muttonchops and streak that made me think JD! And yeah, I'd say maybe just show a hint of chest perhaps? Hey, if it worked for blll nighy, i'm more than sure it'd work here too!

did a re-pose, not sure if the anatomy is orthodox, the left leg bugs me. comments? crits? the nudity may go in the final. Idea just popped in me head, white skirt and a black corset on a male - that just screams "hot". Well, in my mind at least.

Love it Aly.. definitely has that pin up feel now... there's a certain "come hither while I have my wicked way with you" about him avec pecs. I most definitely would. Yummy.

Oh, and Frost and Dominic Purcell's Dracula from the Blade films were hot too. Oh! And Richard Roxberg in Van Helsing. Rawr. And Gary Oldman and Rutger Haur too. *cough* So many hot vampires to choose from! (can you tell i love this subject?) And if you're talking the more dandy type, the japanese do them very well in manga form, Gankutsuou, Vampire Hunter D, Meier Link to name a couple off the top of my head. Feimo (http://www.feimo.deviantart.com) and Heise (http://www.heise.deviantart.com) both do the slightly more effeminate pin ups very well too.

I think he is young and well dressed and comfortable with who he is, Aly... but is he hot? I don't know. I think his chin is too small and gentle. I wish it was more protruded and bony... I wish it was more calcium overall in his his face structure, his features are too fine and fragile for me. Especially area around his mouth. I wish you caught more peculiar expression of the face too... a bit too predictable and general. Like him with unbuttoned coat, more interesting to look.

Sorry if it is not what you wanted to hear... but you asked for opinion.

Nike: Wow! That's really sensual. I wonder, are you going for a purple light source? Just seems right now the reflections on the cloth don't match with that on the guy. (yet?) :)

Tsujini: Also, very daring! Real nice, reminds me of the "Closer" video, wich is by no means bad. :D

Digital I think right now it just doesn't look like he even know what he's doing. :) There's no reason for his shoulders to be up, as it is, so... If you like that hunched-shoulder thing, give him a reason to be doing it. For example, have his hands behind him, bracing something like a table, or a ledge? If you did that, and tipped him forward a bit, and gave a little negative space between the legs.... I guess ultimately it depends on what you want him to exude. Is he menancing yet incredibly sexy? Or relaxed and incredibly sexy? or smooth and incredibly sexy? :P

Daray: I like the idea of the city slicker vampire, men in sharp suits are undeniably hot. Unusual composition so far.. will you be adding something to the left of him?

Tsujini: oh my... you just pushed all my buttons with that one. Eheheh looove how thats looking so far.

Nike: Love the pose, though watch your skin tones don't get too muddy and remember to bounce some of those lovely purples and oranges onto his skin too, to give a really nice luminescence.

Shardana: If you can get hold of a copy of either this or last month's Imagine FX, Aly/Poshspice had a great tutorial featuring this image: Demoness (http://poshspice.cgsociety.org/gallery/591632/) or failing that, reference is your friend!:

Hope those are of use!

Occidental martyr... I'd agree with Aly, he's definitely showing a little too much teeth to be smiling naturally.. and be careful with the marks you make on the face too, those paler lines under his right eye as we see it make him look a lot older than I'm guessing he should be.

D.Dumbfounded: I think the reason you're not finding your mojo with the image is there's no strong sense of story to the character.. why is he sitting like that, in the tree? I did you a little sketch as to how you might reinterpret the image with a little more character... http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s143/zephonline/vamp.jpg keeping that sort of pose you have, but now he looks like he has a purpose, lurking in the tree tops for a victim, looking sexy as he does. Thats if you've not redesigned already! But he has promise to be something a little different, thats for sure.

And here's a quickie update on mine, added a flourishy border to him in keeping with the others I've done. Just need to think of a colour scheme. My heart is screaming for red and black, but its so overdone with vampires. it does make them more instantly recognisable, some how.

Hi everyone. This is the first chow I've entered in a long while. It's definitely time to enter the fray again, and recieve an artistic beat-down. Given the topic, that seems very likely... :lounge:

I'm just posting my linework now, to see if anyone has any useful feedback before I start painting. Admittedly, my interpretation of the topic has been pretty loose; I was designing the character under the pretext that vampires may have slightly different standards of beauty. Perhaps, in whatever fictional universe they inhabit, the vampires appear physically distinct from humans. Although the vampires may be attracted to each other, they may look repulsive to humans.

Even though this interpretation could possibly be argued for, it does seem to be going against the spirit of this chow, and is unlikely to get many votes. Really, I just wanted to do a feral vampire, and wasn't too concerned about trying to make the vampire attractive. This may defeat the purpose of the chow - I could change it though. Not sure what to do.

Any thoughts?

Crit's:

MatthewCampbell: I know I'm pretty picky with the CHOW guidelines when I vote, but if it's an insanely good piece I consider voting for it. In my opinion you'd at least be safer if your vampire didn't look as feral as you have it now. The way you've got him right now gives it a very undignified, rabies-bitten kind of appearance. Not something I would associate with vampires. And it does avoid the whole pinup aspect of this CHOW. That's my input.

DigitallyDumbfounded: Try lowering his shoulders, his shrug is quite effeminate and he looks like he's very uncomfortable or scared. He's missing that cool, sexy look that a pinup should have. Comfortable, relaxed, and confident is what I would shoot for.

alice_: I think that might just make him look like a serial killer. Could be tough selling the whole vampire thing with that expression as it's not a very pinup-like pose. Beautiful work so far, though.

shardana: Why don't you show us a wip where you've made the cape black, then we can see better where you might be getting it wrong.

--

Here's what I've got so far. Not sure about the background, or how to make the character more vampiric. Wings, maybe? Dunno. This is definitely good practice though. As it's been said, the ladies don't complain about having to draw women. This is probably good for us. Plus my gf really wants me to do this one, she would appreciate me taking a break from drawing women all the time.

FunkdaFide
February 27th, 2008, 01:32 AM
timothee: I think your perspective is a little too extreme for the scale you are showing. Unless it's a bee's-eye view, you may want to lessen the extent at which your lines converge. I think the most extreme is right in the front, where the wall cuts away. Here's a pic showing what I mean.

Hope that helps!

I gotta say, 100%, that when I saw Zephyri's sketch I got a little twitch in me loins. It's the only sketch that had that effect so yeah, I gotta say that she's hit that nail on the head there. GORGEOUS face. That really matters, I think, more than the body. Daestwen's was /hawt/ too but only a profile, so you miss the intensity of the stare, which is a BIG draw for women to look at...

ryuloulou: thanks for that link.. some yummy refs in there! Love the split lighting you have with the wip so far! His ears look a little low on his skull, if i had to nitpick, but other than that looking very nice.

Timothee: you're on my wavelength there too, looking very nice indeed, nothing nicer than a contemplative vamp lurking on the dark city streets looking sexy. Can't wait to see it fleshed out.

Matthew Campbell: I see where you're coming from, and indeed, who are we to say what's hot and not.. eheheh.. but imagine if this were the brief you'd been given by someone who was paying you to do them a hot male vampire pin up. Would it still be what you would go with? You can still do feral and have him be attractive... and indeed, it doesn't have to be the norm in terms of attractive too, women find that dangerous wild look very attractive too, long as it's not too over done.

A friend asked if I was doing Chow, I said I was too busy... Then she said the topic and I said "Yes, I'm doing the Chow" :P Thanks for picking something girl-friendly :)

And dudes who bow out of these things just because they have to draw a guy are exactly the type of guy who should be doing it and learning from it. Big respect to the guys giving it a try! Remember girls don't need to see as much skin, so you don't even have to make something that racy for it to be super hot to a girl... It's so much about the emotion, so concentrate on the pose and face! And actual naked dudes aren't usually that pretty no matter how into guys you are.

Posh you obviously know the clothes can be half the sexiness, and a good example of a hot dude with chops would be Hugh Jackman ala Wolverine...

Timothee and ryuloulou yours are looking great too.

Zephyri - not my type but definitely got the pinup vibe nailed!

Xaya - looks great so far but I think it could be way better if you just make his eyes focusing on the viewer... Not that sexy to be ignored, right?

Etrix - you were thinking along the lines I was going to explore today - not all vampires should be buff Greco-Roman muscle gods with pale white skin; I think you can also go the vampire route of slim/trim/emo types wit pre Raphaelite features.

Memper - you've got the coat buttoning on the wrong side. Technically that would be a woman's suit coat the way you have painted it. Also, there's nothing that says "pinup" - perhaps it's the pose, perhaps it's the angle, or the fact that he isn't making eye contact with the viewer. The body language is everything in pin-ups.

General note - This is definitely a brief where the pose and body language count a great deal - almost crucial to selling it. The brief is for Hot Male Vampire Pinups, not just male vampires...

Some advice that has been kinda spoken of I think I read, I'm not seeing things that scream PINUP to me. I'm seeing character profiles and portraits. So try and make that pinup element shine. And not just off all the abs and pecks floating around. :sungod:

Here's an afternoon stab at this - I had a devil of a time finding a pose I really liked. This one is a photo reffed one, but there are some things that need tweaking (clavicle area, the face obviously). I think i'm going to eliminate most of the other leg, almost like he's straddling the coffin.

The foreshortening has been a bitch on this...hopefully once it gets down to painting, I'll be able to push him back into space more...

Alright, ditched the last comp, wasn't feeling it. I'm thinking it looks pretty sweet with the sunlight shining onto him through blinds, but of course this is silly for reasons I don't need to explain.

So, here's how I explain why it isn't silly. Fresh blood is enough to keep the vampire from being fatally injured by the exposure for a short time. And why would they submit themselves to this? I would think vampires are likely masochists and would therefor revel in contempt of the suns deadly light. I don't know if that will come across to the viewer that way. Most will probably just look at it and think it's ridiculous. We'll see.

Any thoughts on the composition would be appreciated.

Here is my WIP so far. I am not sure what to do with the background yet.
I can't wait to see everyones finals!

Wollstonecraft- Good concept but not exactly pinup. Make sure to emphasize his sexiness and not so much that of the victims. Maybe have him look at the viewer and cover her face a little with his.

Geistdel- Looks good so far but I would definitely try to find some reference for the anatomy. The skin tone is a bit warm for a vamp, maybe desaturated a little and add some cooler tones to the shadows.

FunkdaFide- I really love the composition. I would make it moonlight coming in instead of sunlight (just to be safe). A lit candle (or some other warm light) in the room would look awesome against the cools but would be up to you. I would also not crop his elbow at the edge like that. It makes a tangency. Nice work though, really has a great mood to it!

Thanks for the advice and compliments, Felicia. I've expanded the crop and brought the girl down a bit to give the vampire more presence. Will play around with some candle light tomorrow.

Crit's for you piece: Just a few anatomical issues, if you hadn't noticed them. The arm on the left is a little jello-ie, and the hand furthest from the viewer is larger than the closer hand. Nice job on the face. Great work so far.

I think I'm calling this a wrap, unless anyone can point anything out that's just failing. :anime: :batgirl:

Xaya Nice Colors, far from the black/ red cliché

Arthemis IX I like his posing, could look good as cartoon

rvdtor cool posing, take a look to the upper arms, I miss them.

n1va that looks already good, but don't make the victim more important than the vampire. If he looks to the viewer hes more present.

Joey-b I like his grin and the wings. I think, his chest isn't correct already.

Lewis nice colors and I like his pose. the position of the legs is difficult, I don't know what would looking good.

DefiledVisions Nice details :)

madhatter106 His body looks good, but his face needs work, I think you need a bit more space between the eyes.

lewisaurus the body looks good

Wollstonecraft I think, that works

GeistDel Compared to the neck the Body is to slim. I would use some reference pictures.

FunkdaFide I really like the composition

Felicia Sexy :)

Lalilulelo A black vampire, really interesting :) I like this blue light.

My WIP, critic is welcome

Lali that looks cool but at a first glance it doesn't even seem like a vampire so consider that.

Funkafide: cool scene setup - I'm curious what you'll do with the colors but I think you can push this much farther.

Felicia - looking like a pinup! Consider the shoulder-chest tie in area, maybe reference some photos. Right now the shoulder is too big and unless the guy has a pec tear his pec should strech and connect to the shoulder better. Also right now the hands are too big but you don't seem to be done.

Geist - hey dude, there's work to be done all over. The face needs work, you just seem to have started though. Biggest issue right now I see is some muscles missing like triceps. Also make sure you don't bend the bones in the arms, they should be straight, this might be partly due to the fact you're omitting certain muscle groups right now. I'm not sure my advice should be followed on this but you should perhaps just try black/white/gray for now until you get the form down. The colors you have down make little sense to me, using a pallete is one thing but what you're doing is having the same hue repeating for many values in the skintone. I myself am terrible with colors so I shouldn't be giving you advice on this but maybe someone more qualified can.

Madhatter! Hey - yours looks like a pinup and an unmistakable vampire. I really want to see it colored and worked on some more. Put some shadows in perhaps before working with the colors. The only area I'm worried about is the neck so work on that otherwise looks cool.

Skorpi thanks a lot for that comment. I considered painting the woman's face in but removed it twice now because of what you're saying. Also I'll try to hide her more in the shadows. Still some work to do but I'm glad you're pointing this out because I considered the same thing in my head.

Of course half nekkid chicks go hand in hand with vampires... and some people can never get enough of nekkid chicks :)

Zeph - great skin!
myalias - just golden
ryuloulou- yours, i like the composition, very much, can't wait to see it's evolution.
MEMPER - lovely
GeistDel - Lestat got a sun tan in the 3rd book of that series - if I can recall correctly. Tan vamps are canonical according to Anne Rice rules. I thinks a cool portrayal would have him tan in a warm light, however, his skin would be pale in a cool light. He looks Romulan. Speaking of Lestat,

FunkdaFide - nice concept
Felicia - lovely - my only suggestion, have the blood covering his chest and abdomen. Bloody hand prints on his chest would be nice romantic touch.
Lalilulelo - kudos for a African vamp
deadread - lovely

lewisaurus: wow, he looks amazing so far!

GeistDeL: I agree is is quite warm looking, also his midsection seems a bit too small for the size of his head (hair is looking great!)

FunkdaFide: I liked the brighter light myself: whose to say it isn't just a different room in the place with a window and blinds (like a room in a hospital) -his side is a little thick/high near her face

Felicia: agreed with Funk on the hand.... he looks great though!!!

Lalilelo: another great one, good job! (but I would love to see the folds of cloth brought into more realism, not quite great yet)

N1va: his elbow is way too high and under the arm is that supposed to be skin webbing? I think it needs to be defined more to make it clear to the viewer (the viewer shouldn't have to try and guess what it is) her hand is also missing a thumb and two fingers, did you run out of energy? lol (kidding) I don't thiink the light would be so bright on his ears, the are laid back and not on the same plane as his nose (probably the middle chest light wouldn't be that bright also)... his hand does not look like it's CLENCING her at all, but more like a mannicans hand that doesn't bend or something (i think just playing with the shadows may sell it to us though), and finally her right knee could use stronger shadowing, looks like it's too high right now. :) hope that helps.

Scorpi: can't wait to see this done, LOVE the bat belt ha...not sure about his high arm length but the shading may help that if it's supposed to be towards me more.

Sorknes: The fabric isn't quite there yet, his upper wrist/palm is off, and the ear needs some more definition... he is off to a great near finish!

deadred: LOVE him, wow... really sexy!

n1va Great composition & lighting. The victim looks a tad too skinny though.

skorpi Nice work on the anatomy, I love his expression. The hat seems a bit small, & doesn't look like it's sitting properly on his head.. maybe putting it on a bit of an angle might be interesting..

Lalilulelo Really nice design over all, love the costume & the colours. His arm could be a little more bulky though, it looks slightly out of proportion in comparison to the rest of the body.

lewisaurus Great work so far. I'm having trouble figuring out where the light source is though? Some of the shadows might be a little too harsh.

madhatter106 I looove the pose! The anatomy looks good in general, but I think the head needs a little more work.. the ear looks like it's too high & the eyes are too close together.

shardana The costume & pose are nice, but I think his legs might be a little short.

Jack Frost Great colours. The pose seems a little stiff.. I think it could be because of the legs.. having them more apart might help.

I think mine is finished

EDIT: and i decided to take some time for commenting the latest posted art here

Madhatter: I like the pose and caint wait to see it painted. His facial expression can be sexier/tougher.

Lewissaurus: Nice nick :P I like the shading overall but maybe your using to much blacks? Soft shading would definately make it more beefcake.

Geistdel: Props on the characterdesign. About the anatomy: he looks a bit elastic.. i dont know if that was your intention, if it was then never mind ^^

Felicia: On of the very few REAL pin ups. Good :) Some things on the anatomy bother me though. His hand and backarm just dont really work... and im not sure if hes entirely in balance (falling backwards)

Lalilulelo: Even though you say youre done, i think you can do some more refinement on the clothes and wings. Also the fingers seem a little long. I very much like the colours and the face, they give your drawing a lot of energy.

N1va: Damn those are some nice wings. I also find that the woman adds a lot to the picture. Some further shading can turn this piece into something beutifull. For now his right-arm is still very flat. I was also looking at his pinkfinger (is that a word in english?)... its very thin.

Skorpi: Even though its an assignment to make a pinup and your still in progress i think you can definately add some more mood in the picture. Big plus on the body anyways :)

Deadred: just... amazing... haha i dont have any crits :P

Kroevyn: Nice clothing and colours. Thats a great piece of art you have there. The only small thing that bothered me was the texture on the floor: its not in perspective.

alright, I'll polish it up a little bit further (guess I just got tired of looking at it last night/this morning), thanks for your comments, everyone!
N1va- Not bad, nice colors, but his arm is FLAT. Give it some shadow where it needs to be, right now it's all color and no form.
Skorpi: Not a bad figure, but he's flat, kind of boring honestly. Lighting is everything, and you got a vampire at night time! Take advantage of one obvious light source (and one not so obvious light source): The moon! Then, throw in another off-screen light source to bring out some more of him.. Paintover will illustrate: I got a liiittle lazy around his right hand though, so keep that in mind.

Deadred: Thanks! Pushing right now, hehe. And I'm trying to do something with that jawline ;)

Wallstonecraft: Thanks you too :) Yeah, working on the fabric now as well, wanted to nail the main proportions of the body first. Trying to do something with the hand, and I know the ear is not defined, I haven't quite decided if I really want it that pointy. *lol*

Oregano: Will, do boss! They were more like the spur of the moment, I've had hours to think about articles you can "sink your teeth into" now... :P

Well I had some time to paint this evening and after a lot of reconsidering I've redrawn my vamp. Whilst I wanted to keep the city modern vamp, I was finding it hard to draw a cocky, over-confident vamp, so I've fallen back to moodiness. I think its a bit more traditional pin up and sexy anyway ;)

So its not great at the moment, laying down some colours before I refine everything or at least try to lol. Im going to pale him out quite a bit hopefully. Anyway, great work all I'm loving the progress!

Deadred - that's awesome, wish I had your talent with the brushes. Every time I look at one of your pieces I commit a mortal sin :(

Lali and Skorpi - maybe you guys should combine efforts, your pieces look exactly the same scene, wonder if someone else pointed this out hehe.

Lali thanks for the comments, I know it's looking flat - yours doesn't but add some color!

Daray - cool image but make sure you show he's a vampire somehow.

lewisarus - nice abs hoho! I don't think you should go for such small head. Vampires are creatures of beaty and guile not so much of muscle and brawn though... at least that's what I think :) Really outstanding shading thsufar but make sure to work on the neck, right now it seems too thick and throws the rest of the piece off.

Tin - good definitions of the muscles - when I squint at your piece it looks much better so make sure to refine it. Teeth look too small right now width-wise. I think you'll have to show them because otherwise people might think the glass is full of wine.

Geist - your piece is coming along and I think you can do a lot with it. Here is a 2 minute paintover. The biggest step was the first one - auto contrast - your contrast is too low now and your image is getting completely white-washed. After this simply work on defining your shadows and shapes some more. Hope this helps!

meltface - Personally, I love mohawks and some nice abs on a guy. I'm also digging the shoes and wing-ish creations. However, I'm thinking any hotness is instantly killed by the naked, spread-eagle, sunny-side-up corpse. The hotness in vamps is the moment just before the kill, when things are at their most seductive. That's the built-in lure...and you killed it. ;) Beyond that, I'd be careful with his forearm (it's plumper on bottom than top--reverse that), and shorten the feet a tad.

Are you going to add tats and piercings? Seems only right. :)

@lewisaurus: It looks good, but his emty eyes are eerie

@GeistDel : Not bad, but dont cut his hand ;)

@Shera 3000: Nice start, interesting scene.

@Tin Can: Looks good. I think his right arm is to short.

@n1va: That's really better than the last version :)
Lali just made an overpaint from my pic ;)

@meltface: The version with girl works better, theres more contrast. But the heart? in his hands is a nice idea too.

DefiledVisions – No Problem, buddy, I don’t think you can patent a wine glass anyway ;P Plus others are using it anyway, I just noticed. Wine glasses are synonymous with vampires I think. meltface - Much sexier to me. Heart's a nice touch!

shardana - Even if it was a female vamp with a male corpse, I think the sexy would be killed. On yours I really like the color added in the coat and armor. The sleeve looks great! Are you still refining the feet? Or are you going to do mist over the top?

skorpi - Nice muscles! Your guy makes me giggle...he looks like he's going to a Halloween party...as the entertainment. :D You paid great attention to his right hand, so revisit the left (if you aren't already) to make the fingers a little more natural.

ArthemisIX - Very playful design. All the little details are nice! The right foot looks a touch too in-ward, though.

IceMoon - You should see the old "Guys Drawing Hot Guys" thread that some guys did after the girls did their version. VERY interesting. ;D Yours is hot to me--I like the tusseled hair! Nice pose and contrast, cute face...but the sleeve on his right doesn't seem to be falling/compressing the way I'd expect a poet shirt to.

mythril_golem - 'Cause they dress up to draw the ladies/guys to them, but once they've caught their prey, who cares? ;D

DefiledVisions - There's more than one vamp with a wine glass in this thread. It's a common theme so I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm a bit along Mythril_Golems line on that one, tis a shame to ruin such fine clothing with blood, i mean, a vampire tries to be non descript so they don't get caught and can easier stalk prey. then why get new clothes each time, and I don't really like the idea of such a graceful creature as a vampire being sloppy and messy, sure if they are the monstrous type, but they aren't exactly pin-up material....
The short of it is, my image of a vampire is a clean and graceful creature, and well dessed in a 1890-1910 fashion :D

A quick thought.

My wife likes looking over my shoulder at all these, and was really interested in this weeks brief. I don't have a ladies perspective but she was very adamant on which ones she felt best followed the brief especially as it describes a "pin-up."

Basically she said that Skorpi, Arthemis, Ryuloulou, and zephyri seemed to capture the whole Pin-up aspect best. Too many she felt went more playgirl than pin-up.

Zephyri She REALLY liked yours. She made the whooo he is hot sound. Now I am jealous of not only your art, but of your character. Thanks alot.

Ryuloulou personally my favorite so far.

I thought I’d write some comments while I avoid packing. Take my advice with a grain of salt though, I know allot of people here have much better theory then I do. But some advice is better then none right? I missed some people, especially those from early on in the thread…

Joey B – I really like your body and the wings are nice too. Not sure if the face is that attractive though. Then again maybe you should have a ladies opinion on that.

Daestwen – Love the look of your sketches. I think this one is very attractive. I agree with the full bath idea.

Haroldfay – I like the overall pose of the man. I do think his face could be sexified, however.

Myalies – I like where you are going with this one. The contrast is very effective.

Lewis – your picture is very interesting, but I don’t feel it as a pin up. the eyes are well done. (as for his leg I think I would raise his right knee and reduce the angle between his legs . Try putting yourself in the same pose. it feels quite awkward) - Disregard, you changed it already

Zephyri – What can I say about your piece? I think you have nailed the concept. It evan looks like the fabric around him wants to touch his chest. Nice work.

Remmy – your face is beautiful, but I think you could make it better. The eyes could use being enlarged.

Tsujni – Like the concept. Interesting to see how it pans out.

Daray –Sophisticated pose. Little flat so far, but I’m sure you’ll get to that.

Nime – your image is very pin-up-able . I do think it could be vamped up a bit though.

Occidental Martyr – Well you certainly have the sex appeal down.

Digitally dumfounded – I like your character. He’s like a teen pin up. I would drop the sholders, though, to make hum more natural.

Alice – Very dark concept. Make sure you keep it sexy, though. He doesn’t have a very vampire feel right now. If you can correct that I think you could have a powerful image.

Timothee – I like your modernish take with the singlet and the exaggerated perspective. Look forward to seeing your progression.

Funkdafide – I Like your new comp. There’s also a quality to your work in general that I like. Not sure what it is.

Ryuloulou - I like the angle of your face. Woman with the same pose look sexy to me, so why not men?

Kroevyn – Interesting idea, though I think you may get a more powerfull impact if your character is looking out towards us while sucking on the blood as if tantalizing the viewer. I think your showing an optimal amount of skin too.

Sorknes – Love the magazine idea!!

Xaya – Nice vampire feel to your sketch. I really like the pale skin. Looking forward to se how you fining it.

Rvdtor – you have to show 3/4 of the body, so you’re fine. Love your relaxed pose. Is that a skull shaped cod piece though? I like the background already.

N1va – Love your image overall, I like the closed mouth better though. Much sexier. Its kind of a trade off, though. Thanks for your crit too, I’ll try to fix the teeth and hopefully refine it well.

Madhatter – sensual, yet slightly homoerotic. That is a slight trend through vampire pop culture is it not? Nice work.

Lewisaurius – really nice Job on the chest, though I think it would be really worth while exploring the concept as a whole rather then focusing on one part of the anatomy. Overall pin up pose is nice though.

Wollstonecraft. – Works for me. Nice to see a hot lady amongst all the sausage, even if she’s not supposed to be here. If you really are trying to hit the brief, though, you will probably have to be very careful about making the man be the main focus. It is a male pin up after all, and they both seem to have the same presence here. I Really like the image though. It is sensuality on paper.

Felicia – hot stuff. I like it all. Looking forward to seeing more.

Lali – Nice concept. my only crit is that I think the wing / cape looks a bit solid to me. Could use a bit of refining. Love the tattoos.

GeistDel – Ya Contrast is an issue. Interesting otherwise though.

Shera – You may want to relax his pose a bit. He looks quite stiff.

Scorpi – Thanks, I’ll see what I can do with it. I always manage to screw proportions up one way or another he he. Yours is looking nice and sophisticated. I think you have a better overall grasp on the concept then most. I do think your legs could use being filled out a bit though. Looking forward to the final.

Arthemis IX – Thanks. I was actually thinking about leaving him Bald. Can Bald be sexy? I May reconsider that though. I like your pin up idea. What is the pin up from though? Magazine, Photo? Not necisary, but a corresponding background may be nice. Your character looks pretty clean so far. Nice job.

Ice Moon –Nice pic. Vampire – check. Pinup – check. Hot – double check. As was mentioned by another I love the hair and face. The shirt is a great style as well. Nice job.

Shardana – I really like the cloathing, and the scenario. I would like to see you revisit the head, however. But I wouldn’t want you to change your nature. :P nice over all.

Deadred – Nice start. I’m looking forward to your refinement of it.

Meltface - Nicely rendered. Hard to put advice down on where to go from here. I like the woman better then the heart in overall composition, but she is very distracting, especially considering the brief. Looking forward to the final.

I opologise about the length of this post: Just trying to help :)

mythril_golem - 'Cause they dress up to draw the ladies/guys to them, but once they've caught their prey, who cares? ;D

fair enough :) but it has been the downfall of many a vampire (being caught bloodied that is)

Wow Tin Can, great that you commented on everyone! And I do think that hair can make your vampire very sexy. But it's up to you, making him bold will give him a tougher look, giving him hair a bit softer look. I personally prefer the softer look ^^.

Thanks for the comments!

I've had some time to work on mine, today, but it's still a long way to go, some "bugs" to fix. The vamp features aren't added yet I'm working way too slow :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v684/artofnike/vampire3.jpg

Daray - I really like the pose :) Not very vampy yet though.

lewisaurus - Nice chest - and good shading! something about the neck looks strange to me, though - and mouth and nose aren't quite symmetrical either. maybe take another look at a ref?

GeistDel - I really like the concept! Work on it - n1va's paintover will help for sure :)

Shera 3000: I like the concept, but there are a few anatomy issues in that pose. His right arm looks odd and I can't figure out what he's doing with it, and his legs are a bit off, too. That makes it all quite stiff.

Tin can - nice pose, and the wine glass is great :) He looks very child-like, is that on purpose? Bald can be sexy, but a bit more grown-up look wouldn't harm, I think.

Arthemis - I like it very much, exspecially that it's pinned :)

n1va - great progress! Love it!

FunkdaFide: that's a great pose, too, and I really like his androgynous face :)

meltface - beautiful textures, and I lie the mohawk :) In the version without victim his left leg looks a little bit off, I think.

shardana - great progress! He looks very much Dracula-like, but I'm missing the pin-up aspect a bit.

scorpi - looking great so far! I really like your color scheme - and the hands are beautiful. The legs are a little bit thin, maybe?

Ice moon - looking great so far. Maybe define his knees a little bit.

dream sear - I love the sketch :)

deadred
February 29th, 2008, 07:35 PM
shardana : good job on the costume and atmosphere, tho his face seems to have too much perspective warp somehow, like the upper part of his head tapers off and his jaw is big for his face. the pose is abit symmetrical too, maybe change the pose for the arms?

deadred: really good kinda looks like peter steele was he your reference? :)yep! i'm using him for ref [this pic in particular (http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/5461/nudeb041zi7.jpg)]. he has weird proportions tho, but he's the first guy i think of when i'm looking for broody cheesecake hehe
thanks for the comments :D

I updated mine of page 5, will probably not be able to push it further...I was tempted to write in some cheezy red cursive something to the effect of with love, Vlad "The Impaler" like some silly pin-up greeting card, but I fought the temptation.

Comments on some of the stuff I've seen here...feel free to embrace them or disregard them. Just typin' stuff. ;) Apologies if I missed someone, there's a lot to sift through here...

Joey-B - Love the pose. The way the wings have been rendered gives a sense that they're vast and that their edges are beyond the picture plane. His garb looks rather Egyptian, is that a conscious stylized choice?

Lewis - I really liked your original sketch - I think the coloring is a bit over the top. Why is he that crazy color? Love the idea of the sexy vamp perched on a rooftop...

Poshspice - bummer, I was really looking forward to where you were going with him - pity that you couldn't spend more time on it. I liked the coat open, it was more in keeping with the "pin-up" aspect of it. Plus you could see that great wide sash and front fall breeches.

myalias - I love the painting style, it's very loose and messy and evocative. Yours is one of the more feminine, elfin looking vampis here.

Zephyri - spot on, looking great. When I look at the painted progress, it's almost like there's too much detail - between the tatooing and the spikey armor, is it an overload? Is it too much? I'd love to see one or the other, or a moderation between both.

Nike - total satyr pose - I'd be careful that his head doesn't get tipped to far back, so much so that you lose his eyes. I think eye contact in this composition would be great....

Occidental Martyr - Give him some sharp fangs, too! ;)

Digitally Dumbfounded - his shoulders seem like they're over his ears - he has this shrugging hunchbacked look.

alice - love the cowboy idea - hope that you're able to complete this. I think there's some way to "sex it up," mainly in the pose or the body language? Something that takes us into "pin-up" realm?

timothee - love the pose, love the colors, love the angle, the details at his collarbone. I had originally thought to do the pointy vampire ears on mine, too, but elimintated it.

FunkdaFide - I think you're on the right track with the first one - and the wolf is a nice touch. Good eye contact, good sultry look on his face. Though I like the second one too - perhaps the victim is too extraneous? What if it's just a hot male vampire sitting in a sexy reclined pose in the chair with great film noir lighting?

ryuloulou - another great leaning-back-with-eyes-on-the-viewer pose. Keep going!

Sorkness - the March issue is already on the stands, eh? The skin whitening made me laugh. Good pose, too.

Xaya - looks more female than male to me. Maybe I'm having flashbacks to Tilda Swinton winning Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars? ;)

Artemis IX - heheheheh "pin up" indeed. I love the finger at the lips.

n1va - I wish I could paint like that - beautiful colors. Per the anatomy, the neck keeps drawing my eye (for the male) - it's a bit "stringy" - seems like there's extra pulling and strings there, like he has a super duper sterno clyto mastoid.

Jack Frost - see above note to n1va - wow, super duper thick neck! It's like his sterno ate his lats! Other than that, gorgeous painting and great anatomy. Why go the ugly face route, though?

Felicia - fantastic face, good anatomy. I almost wish his hands were used a bit better - what if one were resting suggestively at his waistline? or at his abs? Dunno - I just wish they weren't dangling there...

Laliluleo - Great color. There's a lot going on with the costume, though. But you get props for saying "Hot Male Vampire Pinup, I can make that one of my self-portraits!" You make me want to renew my gym membership - which I haven't gone to in like seven years.... :)

skorpi - careful on the top hat - it's looking like it's slightly more narrow at the top compared to the bottom, and with the brim looking as flat as it does, the only thing that's making me think this isn't a pilgrim hat is the lack of a buckle in front. ;) The high collar of the cape looks to high in front, like it's going to smack his face when he moves in it. His costume screams Male Vampire Stripper Gram - I think it's the cravat and the bat belt buckle. I think it's a great tongue-in-cheek touch.

deadred - great pose. And gorgeous painting - nice and free and loose and simple. I'd give my eye teeth to paint like that! And the seared cross scar on his chest is a great touch.

lewisaurus - you've taken the rendering really far, but you've not finished the basic construction of the figure. Something about the head or face doesn't seem quite right...I can't put my finger on it, but there's something there that seems tweaked.

GeistDel - is he supposed to be shunning the sunlight? Does that explain the pose?

Tin Can - the stem on the wine glass looks really short - it's more like a stem for a brandy snifter. I think you've given us one of the few bald vampires here...

meltface - beautiful painting, beautiful texture. With the first version, it's the warmth of her body that keeps drawing your eye there - what if she were in the same color value range as her captor? And you gave us the only mohawk so far - heehee, a different touch.

Shardana - why armor? He's covered from neck to wrist to the bottoms of his feet. Though the armor is painted beautifully, there's not enough in the costume or the pose or the face to say "pin-up."

Ice Moon - keep pushing it further, the painting could look top notch if it's worked on more. The blood on his chest and neck seems to flatten that whole area out - and since it's a focal point in terms of color, I think you need to stay true to the values and contours of the skin under that blood. It's almost like he's got a triangular piece of flat paper glued under his chin, obstructing view of his collar bone and adam's apple.

Dream Seer - beautiful drawing! Nice sense of form and line. And a very tongue in cheek interpretation of the brief, which I can appreciate. I would positively love to see this painted! Yours is perhaps the one I look forward to the most when it reaches the poll...

Wow, some really great pieces turning up in this thread... I really want to stop and crit, but i don't like picking and choosing, and it's 5am and I should have been in bed two hours ago at least, so another drop and run from me. Just an update on my own piece. He's kind of a nod to the vampire wanna be Reiganse from the Vampire Hunter D anime of 1985, I loved the red and white hair thing. And colour coordinated, like any sexy vamp pin up would be, naturally. Thanks to the person who told me his eyes were slightly off.. figured his whole facial features were ever so slightly too centered for his face.

Well, I posted my chow in the finals thread. Thanks for all the tips and crits! I'm going to hand out some tips too, I hope it helps ^^

Ebony-Chan: cool, but keep an eye on anatomy. I think the muscles pop out a bit too much.
Tsujni: Yours has a very twisted atmosphere, cool! Though probalby not everyone's definition of "hot" :P Upper arms look a bit swollen maybe?
rvdtor: Nice drawing! The design of the dress is a bit confusing maybe (what are those yellow things exactly?), but still cool.
Zephyri: Well, your drawing rocks :). I do think that it has a bit too much going on, with all the hair and all the trinkets. Simplifying the clothing design would make this drawing even better I think.
Giordan: Please finish this sketch, it looks very cool. What are you going to do with the environment?
daestwen: I really like your sketch, hope you can finish it. I think the arms look good, the left one maybe too short? I like the curly hair!

Well, good luck everyone, I'm looking forward to all the finished entries!

Hello, I'm new here and this also happends to be my first CHOW. Rawr. Okay, just going to dump a couple of WIPs here and get back to work (no time for crits at the moment, sorry!) WHY am I painting this analog at this late hour?? And WHY did I start it in acrylic? I HATE acrylic, and it doesn't like me either. Result, this thing is starting to look kind of 80's new-wave, or something, and I've only managed to "finish" the background so far. (which I may have to repaint later after this fiasco is over.) Rowrbazzle. However, I'm going to try my damnedest to finish that figure tonight. In oils dammit, no more acrylic! Or in Photoshop if all else fails.

Okay, this is not how I wanted him, but I don't have time for the final polishing I was hoping for. His vampiric qualities are a bit more subtle because I'd think a vampire would not walk around with a big sign saying "VAMPIRE" or anything, but I think you can still get the idea. For now here it is and I will comment and crit everything here tomorrow when I'm not dying.

He does look kinda like him but that was totally unintentional. :)

ryuloulou - dude that turned out awesome. Yours is my fave :D I love the Klimt-esque drawing in the background. Great color choice too.

Puppykitten - thanks! I liked the colors in yours too - it's also super clean and the subtlety is cool. Not really my type of face though but that's just taste.

MarkDN - I like yours a lot... Only thing I would have done differently is have the wing go over the arm too, it'd have to bend funny to facilitate that pose... But the way he's standing is pretty sexy :]

dream_sear - love the pose and the torso. Staking the poor guy isn't very sexy though, hehe. Really nice paint job on the torso though!

Posting my final here, too... The thing is BARELY dry, talk about sneaking in under the wire... >.< (Assuming I'm not too utterly late.) Background is acrylic (not doing that again in a hurry,) figure is done in oils, blood added in Photoshop due to lack of time. Lessons learned: 1) I still hate acrylic, 2) I paint way faster in oils than in acrylic, 3) don't use 1-ply bristol board, it warps like hell.

Otherwise, this was a hell of a lot of fun (the part that was done in oils, anyway. The acrylic portions... not so fun.)

Also, I want that jacket. XD

Will browse/comment on the rest of the entries after brunch - some nifty-looking stuff coming in at the last-minute, I see!

VERY 'come-hither'! And thanks for the advice on the arms, Gwenevere. You were spot on; looks much better now. *curtsy*

Argh, it seems so obvious now, but I suppose good ideas do tend to seem that way. That area was a real bother, I'm sorry I didn't think of that possibility at the time.

I like the humor in yours - the shocked 'morning after' look as his reflection fades...

*checks* Ah, yes, he DOES look better now. Much better. Yup, that was pretty much the only thing that was bugging me about him, he looks lovely now. A rather poetic take, I quite like it...

And staking him through the hair is a nice touch, I just noticed that...

Ok, our boy's back and this time he's got wrap-around plumage like a demonic exotic dancer.

Still WIP - I gave him a bit of a smirk but messed his eyes up. I'm considering changing the hands to give them a bit of gesture, to give the piece more dynamism. And legs, he'll need some o' them... at first I was trying to make his legs look half formed out of a mysterious glow as though he'd just apparated, but I'm thinking perhaps wings make that less credible and more confusing.
