Topic: Ancient Automaton
Background: No long briefs or background this time :) If you're not sure what an Automaton is: Automaton - Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automaton).
Please note that this is not necessarily a robot as such, and I challenge you not to make it Steampunk :P
Brief:
1. Design and draw an Ancient Automaton!
2. That's it... now draw!
Deadline: Saturday March 1

Here's a question: Can the automaton be 'gifted' to an ancient race, like the Egyptians, by, say, aliens? Hence the technology could be more advanced than water and levers but 'look' sort of Egyptian? Or is that cheating? Only my second IDW so I want to be clear I'm staying in the rules. Thanks.

When you say ancient, do you mean looks, is from an ancient time (100 years plus)?

Vorp: As long as its clear it isn't something futuristic with a retro look or something that'd be okay. It's been done a couple of times already though so try to find an original way in I suggest.
Pixie Trick: Yep at a first glance it must be clear we're not dealing with a shiny new one or some futuristic moon exploring android.

This is the first really quick, really bad sketch of my idea - Oracle of Delphi a la carnival fortune teller machine.
I know there is lots wrong. I go all squiggly at first.

Not sure if this'll fit the bill for ancient automation or not, but here goes...

Supposed to be an unearthed ancient personal computer from days long past... It floats, not a blowup.

mcmatz: Take care not to make it too humanoid, right now it looks more like a character design to me to be honest :)
Kuth: What exactly makes it 'ancient'? All I see at the moment is a futuristic bot.
Tsujni: Like where this is going, you might want to check on the proportions of the legs though. Also, it reminds me a bit of the movie Metropolis :P

I was thinking of adding texture and color to it, but I'm not sure if it's worth the effort in the end. Might have to think about it further or bow out for this week if I can't think of something better :\

For those of you having trouble with the ancient part - you need to check out Keith Thompson's work- he does some great stuff in the ancient area - like his clockwork Geisha. I don't have his main page info handy but you can check him out at keithwormwood.deviantart.com

Hendric VII: Yep I did a quick search, his website has a lot of images as well. Check it out here: Keiththompsonart.com/robots (http://www.keiththompsonart.com/robots.html). The Geisha is a nice example. The rest of his gallery is cool too.
Tinfoil (check his featured art by clicking his thumbnail image on the top of this site) has some great inspiration as well, especially his puppet fighters. Check it out here: Tinfoil - Puppet - Arena Net (http://www.tinfoilgames.com/gallery.php?catid=3&itemid=54)

Here's my quick SketchUp wip, I'll use it as perspective guide when painting in Photoshop, hope I'll make it look and feel old. Still haven't decided on which camera angle I want it to be, lower angle makes it look large and intimidating, higher view shows more details :

Some 26-28 hours to go before I close this round, make sure you've posted your finals by then.
Ah uhm my bad, I put the deadline on Saturday March 2 but since February had an extra day this year it should've been Saturday March 1. Hope this doesn't cause trouble for anyone, but if so please let me know.

Wow, artistpavel, I love the textures you've got on your piece! I'd like to see some less perfect looking wood posts, but other than that it's fantastic:)

Final
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c207/TrashCaretaker/ancientautomation-Trashy.jpg
Built deep in the jungles by a elusive and ancient civilization this automation served two purposes. It's first purpose was used to scare off intruders trying to enter the villages. The automation itself was entirely harmless however it's sheer size could easily frighten anyone. It's main and more important purpose was to hold and preserve water supplies. The automation itself was a vital instrument for water to the villagers and could hold vast amounts of it for long periods of time.
