View Full Version : Creature Design with Rich Doble (Insane Visions aka Nobody Knows) - Package Deal!

You know what we love at Massive Black? We love artists who chase after perfection and and get completely attached to their ideas no matter how crappy they are. We love them because there's a lot of them, and they keep our jobs safe.
Richard Doble is the opposite of that approach. This tutorial is not about anatomy or color theory or anything too technical. It's about creating. It's about quickly coming up with dozens of interesting ideas on the way to
arriving at something new and unique. This is Rich's specialty, and we all enjoy seeing the insane visions that come from this agile young mind.
Watch, learn, enjoy, and don't take our jobs. Thanks.

Insane Visions had one of the first sketchbooks I saw when I first found this site, and he is one of those awesome artists that resparked my interest in drawing. THIS is definitely a video I've been waiting for. Already downloaded, gonna watch now! Thank you guys sooooo much for putting this out!! :yayca:

Is it possible for you guys to put up a short trailer or this vid? Like you did for the dvds?
Also (to those of you who have seen this), is the video mostly about drawing creatures like in the sample pic? Or are there other styles and subject matter explored?
Thanks!

Mechis: In part 1 he creates the above 4 creatures, but he makes dozens of changes along the way. The fish creature on the lower left started out as a 4 legged creature, for instance. In part 2, which hasn't been released, he takes the best parts of all the creatures and combines them for a new creature which he renders in color. I'll try and post more progress pictures when I'm in the office on Monday.

I bought it. I was sort of worried though. I asked Rich some questions at the workshop and he was unable to answer them. He told me he was a bad teacher...

are you guys going to combine parts 1 and 2 into a 20 dollar package like with Coro's or leave them separate?
Basically should I get volume 1 now or wait?

just finished watching the video.
its fun, its never boring.
nothing more to say really.. its cool to see him doing so many different creatures in such a short time.
he really understands animal anatomy and how to render surfaces.
he gives some basic tips ("watch animal documentary's") and says "like" more than 3982 times.
i could have spend the money on worse things.

Hi Richard,
it was very interesting to see the creatures appear, disappear and transform
into something different again.
I'd like to have known a bit more about your technique.
It doesn't look like you've used a lot of layers during the process.
Maybe only to keep an idea for later when I look at the file.
Also it seems that you only used 4-5 grey values at 100% opacity.
The brush does not look as if it changes the size during a stroke. Do you use any shape dynamics? It looks so darn easy how you add volume to your creatures. What tools do use to achive that? The blur tool in PS is
a bit weak for this task, do you use dodge and burn or is it painted with
grey values. I have a ton more questions, but these might get answered watching the vid a 2nd or 3rd time.
many thanks,
-Michael

I say "like" a lot when Im pretty nervous. the first try on the voice over was worse, I sounded like I was speaking in code.
I'll make sure that the next video recording is clearer and I'll be more articulate.
sneaker:thank you! I made a bunch of layers. I used a regular round brush with the opacity set to pressure sensitive. I changed the touch strip on my intuos to keystroke and set it to brush size to make the work flow more efficient. I didnt use the blur or dodge and burn tool.

Rich, dude you think that you're like a criminal that needs to hide his identity then you should see Puddnhead's videos. Holy shit!

the idea was that I would be in the dark and my voice would be edited to make it look like I'm hiding my identity, so that whole criminal thing was my motivation for the intro and I wasn't aware the camera was rolling... didn't really work the way I wanted it so we canned the idea, but decided to add it in the outtakes.

just as an idea for the future downloads:
why not do quick intros in the beginning on the tools (and maybe on the person itself)?
just 1 oder 2 minutes before the actual demos start.
this is the brush, this many layer, opacity on pressure, ive been to this or that school, working as
a pro since etc etc.
just to get it out of the way and for a better focus on the actual creating.

hahaha I know. What I was refering to was that in puddnhead's videos he/she (I really don't know!) wears a gasmask with tape over the eyes, a suit that hides his/her body quite well, black gloves, a hat ( so you can't see his/her hair) and speaks through a voice modifier. Anyway... I'm off to draw some creatures. Thanks for the help and inspiration! I can't wait for part 2!

Rich,
many thanks, that touchstrip tip is a nice helper, it even works with shift to get the brush tip softer/harder.

Am I the only one who thinks it's wierd that on the CONCEPTART.ORG DOWNLOADABLE TUTORIALS AND EDUCATIONAL DVD's forum, there's one thread for Jason Chan - Quick Sketching, and one for Rich Doble - creature design,
while on the massive black DVD webpage, there's one video called Rich Doble - quick sketching, and one called Jason Chan - Thunderdome Illustration? I wanna know what I'm potentially buying here!

Rich had me rolling with his comments about horse hooves, piggy banks and nipples in the first bit.
Just finished watching the second video. Holy crap. When you started adding the sinews and tendons over the bones of the creature it gave me chills. Awesome work man, looking forward to whatever you do next. Thanks for all the tips on animal documentaries and anatomy books to look into.
