ROUND #107

STEAMPUNK PENGUIN PROFESSOR
-------------
DESCRIPTION
Steampunk Penguin Professor

He's a penguin. And a professor. And he's steampunk.

Currently, he's on an expedition to the arctic with his assistant.

Illustrate both. The assistant is totally open to whatever you make of it - but remember that it's the supporting character. He/She/It should not outshine our Prof. Penguin.

The way the deadline works: if deadline is on a Sunday and your image is posted on that Sunday 23:59 your local time it's a good entry.
In fact - as long there is Sunday somewhere on the planet your entry is ok. I will make the poll sometimes Monday evening my time (GMT - 8 ) yet I'll have a look at the last entries.

About quality - as general rule: if your shapes and values are not decent - you are out. Watch proportions, perspective etc. we need perfectly readable shapes and coherent, consistent values.

BE PROFESSIONAL - only finished and good quality entries will be taken to the poll. Oregano and Daestwen (yay!) will make the selection.

The deuce you say!

The investigative potential is simply mind-boggling in its enormity. This warrants further extensive study. With goggles.

Definitely goggles....*walks away muttering*

Batmans pinguin is my first thought.

WIP:

Next WIP, turned it more into a penguin and put him on a diet.

I love this idea. The funny thing is two weeks ago I pulled all sorts of reference research for a different penguin project of mine, so I have reference already on hand and a good feel for drawing penguins. Hopefully I can pull this one together faster than I did my Industrial Design last week.

"... hidden away in his secret lair miles below the earth's surface, the Penguin Professor has toiled away at his projects at the expense of all else. The few who have seen him know a bed-ridden old man on life-support ... sporting faded tribal tattoos from a past life. His long nose and the patterns of his yakuza-esque tattoos have earned him the nickname which he bears...."

... er ... the tattoos will come with the color version if this ends up being my final... (heh heh)

Hey is it optional for it to be human or penguin? Can it be a penguin?

The character needs to be a penguin, as in an animal character.

Not a short fat human.

I like these topics where there's animals who are the characters. KInda like Cedartuft the squirrel mage, best CHOW ever - in my opinion.

I'll see if I have time for this, it does sound intressting. :)

February 18th, 2008, 12:23 PM
Well I had an idea, played around with it and BAM.. didn't turn out as planned :(
I may try to make a big one where you actually can see that the penguin on
the mech is a professor (with robes, googles and some weird professor's hat).

I have been thinking of steampunk some time last week and it seems like every art communities are crazy about it now!
I kind of don't get it though, if he's a penguin then shouldn't he be a COW subject? Or COW doesn't allow anthropological creatures? I don't go to the COW forum too often, so I'm not familiar about what goes on there.
this topic is way interesting, however I will have to give it a miss, again.

Sorry, no.

Or COW doesn't allow anthropological creatures? I don't go to the COW forum too often, so I'm not familiar about what goes on there.

COW deals with creature design. CHOW with characters. A character can be anything, animal, vegetable, or mineral - so long as there is a personality associated with it. (some other stuff too, but you get the idea) :geekg:

Ciao,

The professor is young and sometimes people discount him for that reason, but with his extensive research on the cave bacteria of the arctic the others in the Academia forsteri group are finding it harder and harder.

Starting out with a quick profile shot. Trying to get the outfit hashed out. Don't know if he needs a giant parka, it just seems to work for me. I did this not wanting to incorporate too many gadgets seeing how he is a professor, not an engineer. Besides, he's a brilliant, respectable bird, and keeping warm is one of his standards.

However, regardless of title, I think I will take this in more of the engineer/scientist/explorer direction. Everything will be much more entertaining that way. Revisions to come soon, and eventually I'll get to work on some composition thumbnails.

February 18th, 2008, 05:27 PM
On another note, people might get some good inspiration (well, maybe) from the documentary that came out a couple of years ago, "March of the Penguins". It's pretty unbelievable to see what those penguins go through.

It seems, that for once, the tendency of whatever kind of arm I try to draw turning out to be a flobby flipper, might, just might, will not present a great barrier to crawl over.

Oh well, I'm gonna hang in there and try to crap out something worthy.
Here's a quick concept of the professor. His cane is his sidekick (talking,
mini-penguin-head). Now all that remains is to manage to keep the details
when drawing him on a giant mech followed by four other penguins..

Now I just have to add color, steampunk, assistant and something actually intriguing to the picture. ;P

There's some lovely designs here, but remember people, the steampunk setting is strongly affiliated with industrialised victorian england. Gadgets and gizmos, and by all means, an (un)healthy dose of thick smog lands you close, but we can work with clothing and thus, fashion, to nail it into the 19th century!

..yea, I'm a sucker for top hats and fancy collars.. I truly am..

Here's my WIP for the professor. He's a dizzy fellow who's been "granted the honor" of going on this expedition after his latest experiment resulted in the destruction of half the quantum physics lab. He's elated by the trip, but his assistant, an albatross, is aware of the real reason behind it and is less than thrilled by the prospect.

Thanks for the tip, Wollstoncraft. I tried to bring some contrast to the values, and added some more highlights. I'll still be refining this one over the next few days, so it should be brighter by the time I'm done.

I finally added the sidekick. I won't finish this in time for the deadline, but I didn't think I would. I'm trying to work on bringing more life to my characters rather than completion.

good reference: Wild Wild West movie

Senira: your values are too similar/not enough contrast, that's why there is no pop, give more highligts, make his face whiter and get lighter values in there! he looks great so far: MORE GADGETS!!!

Dominus: i like him very much! love his hair and assistant

Bendragon: outstanding so far... can't wait to see it finished too... your values are close also. love the old paper look.

GeistDel: I was doing a walrus also! although I'm also playing with a sexpot.

I'm loving this one, but working just in pencil so far (too lazy to scan)

haha - well, unless I redo it digitally (which may happen) it won't get posted. My scanner has yet again crapped out on me.

It was funny - the basic elements are the same: the girl, penguin (that seems to a common theme this week... hm. Strange :dad: *anyway*) the contraption and use of polar bears. My girl even has a spy glass :P

Meh.

Yay, I've been hoping there'd be another animal character theme since the Squirrel Mage. :)

Here's what I have so far, at the moment sans Prof Penguin. I'm pretty sure polar bears and penguins don't actually coexist, but I had Philip Pullman on the brain and couldn't help myself. :^^;:

once a well respected Professor at Harvard, John C. Stebbins now has little use for his diplomas. John was doing research in Antarctica when his planes engines froze and sent him to what would have been an early death. However his ingenuity and knack for building machines saved his life. Now part steam-powered machine, John continues his research alone amongst the penguins, hoping that someday he will be rescued. In the meantime he survives by tricking the penguins he studies to fetch fish for him from the freezing water.

Yeah, it has to be a penguin. Pretty early on the thread this was clarified, so I apologize if you missed it and it wasn't clear otherwise. You need a penguin (who is a professor) and an assistant.

Very cool stuff. I wonder if it's alright to have a penguin that stole a human body?
If not I can change it pretty fast.

http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p97/DkJunior/Chow107_flashrabbit1.jpg

"After a gruesome accident the professor lost his head in more ways than one.
During an experiment his mind went blank and was cut clean off!
The assistant was horrified as he locked down on the dripping cleaver in his hands.
What happened was that the King penguin also known as "mad" took up residence in the assistant.
Why? Since it's hard to make a name out of yourself in this world as a duck (no matter how intelligent you are),
he decided to attached his head on the old professors body.
And taking over the title as renowned professor.
Now the mad professor could get ahead in his work, with an new assistant on his side."

Wow, I really had problems with this. It's hard to maintain a personality when adding steampunk gizmos all over the place. To keep the focus on the professor, not his toys. I tried a number of designs and nothing worked.

And to clothe a penguin?! It's impossible. Great kudos to you all who managed! So in the end, I just threw it all out, sat down and had some fun. It lacks from steampunk, I know, but I liked his expression, so I posted it anyway.

bleh. i didnt finish it :(
anyways heres wt i got to, just to not waste the effort i guess :)

310858

the concept behind: Baby Penguin likes to pretend he is a fearless professor like his late grandpa! he calls himself (and only answers to) "Steampunk Penguin Professor" and likes to wander off with his trusty plushie Walter, whom he calls his assisstant, to conquer lands never seen by fellow penguins! he often steals some ofhis late grandfather's artifacts to aid on his epic -delusional- "journey"!

wanted to go simple and childish-like on this one... maybe ill finish it for my own satisfaction but all n all pretty disappointed... oh well... I'll do better next time!! :D

Edit: anyone know why the image isnt showing? o.o i thought i attached it properly...
