Just wondering if anybody knows how much tattoo artists charge for tattoo designs alone. I'm not taking into account the cost of applying the tattoo, just the design. Obviously, the size and complexity is a factor here... what if it is a singular, stylized figure based off of a role-playing game? I guess it is more or less like character design, but without the need for a turn-around.

This tells you alot about designing a tattoo. And yes, it is meant for people wanting to do the designing for free, but its good for other people interested in tattoo design pricing.

Also, though tattoo artists are often the best ones to go to for tattoo designs, not all of them can draw all that well. Don't be hasty or thrifty in selecting your artist (for the design or the tattoo), that drawing will be with you for a very long time.

I would recommend you go talk to a tattoo artist personally about this. You'll just get conflicting information in an online forum, where by contrast you'll get exactly the information you need from the artist who will be applying the tattoo. Ultimately the cost of the design is irrelative to the whole proceedure as the design itself comprises only a part of the experience. As this is something permanent you are considering doing, price should never be a deciding factor and you should wait until it's no longer an issue. Your time now would be better spent looking for an artist you can feel comfortable with.

Hey, thanks for the reply guys! Actually, I'm not the one getting the tattoo... I'm the one being asked to design one and I don't know what to charge. Essentially, I am being asked to do a character design because the tattoo the client wants is figurative in nature.
