Demons Beard Isle, lies nearly eight hundred miles southwest of easter island in a island chain known as the witches teeth. The isle is the meeting place of the Bloodbeard pirate clan. A clan assembled during the times of the Spanish inquisition, It's leader Jean' Vaughn Bloodbeard is said to still be alive three centuries later. Some say he is preserved by a mythical fountain of preservation hidden deep within the caves of Malminos' pass, but that is only a myth, as is the existence of the island itself. A map existed, and fell into the hands of Heinrich Himmler, founder and officer in charge of nazi prison camps during WW2. However, after the war, and Himmler's suicide, the map disappeared. Most likely it was stolen and destroyed by members of the Bloodbeard clan.

Tucked away between 3 islands in the South Pacific is the hidden pirate base called The Devil's Horseshoe. Highly protected, and accessible by only three routes, this submerged volcanic cone is home base for a large clan of pirates.

I voted Corrick, because it's both a great concept and a great painting. I do have one tiny complaint, which is that I think a map of that tech level would have more information on it (perhaps topological, for instance).
/ev's painting is also awesome, as is Gaius', and also Kian's that didn't make it to poll. All very traditional, but gorgeous.
More crits later.

i voted hallo , i like his piece and the map also , because the mood of the illustration, is like the pirates are just coming back to count the treasures they got that day, everything looks balance to me even the map ....oh and ev pianting it's awesome.....

I voted jmorris, awesome mood!
Of the maps(if there were a seperate vote), I liked Bartimaeus', neat simple style.
Lots of really good stuff here. Multiple votes woulda been nuts.
corrick - Very cool!
/ev - Very well done!

I voted mundi, really really well done painting!
/ev - yours is amazing I can't get tired of looking at it.
migsta - you set the standard right at the beginning, your map and your main painting are just sooo cool.
Britt - very cool idea!
Gaius - that has such an awesome atmosphere.
hallo - also really liked yours, the warm colours and the brush strokes are so nice.
That was a great round :)
Hope to enter in some more.

ok, knuckles cracked, here we go...
PutridusCor:
nice map, although not really in a pirate kind of way. the compass rose + the key look somewhat out of place.
these four 'miniatures' are pretty sweet, would have preferred one big image instead, tho.
Migsta:
map's cool, the trees look a bit runic, they remind me of a middle-earth map.
sweet image, digging the colors. the middle part could've used a little bit more polish.
jread:
great concept. cool map. creepy cove. i like your take on the subject.
what would've been the icing on the cake: an even more coherent style between both pictures.
Gaius:
the map is neat, a few details (a bit blurry, smudge tool?) are a bit distracting. also, great image. style-wise, the map and the cove make a good couple. you got my vote.
Timothee:
the map is fine. i think a more handmade look would've been nicer.
i really like the 2nd part. quite cozy, if it wasn't for the cannon right in the middle :)
Bartimaeus:
as i already wrote, i dig the style of the cove pic. same applies for the map, even if it's a quite different one. digging the compass rose skull!
Britt:
cool shot - counter-shot approach. nice painterly style. sweet.
Sjouke:
map + pic are both a bit small. the map is pretty cool, i also like the frame you put it in. the cove piece feels a bit empty - but you already mentioned the lack of time.
Richfloyd:
nice cove image, colors are neat. the foreground-background transition at the horizon is a bit abrupt, to my eyes.
the map is also nice, but i think the texture layer on top isn't really necessary (had/have the same problem with my map, texture overkill...)
Corrick:
the image is simply amazing. wait, i'll repeat that: amazing.
what kept me from voting for it was the missing water element required in the brief.
the map's got a cool wild-west-vibe to it, the linework's a bit too slick in my opinion. did you use an actual photograph for the background? nice.
chaosrocks:
i think the image's a bit messy, tightening up some details to give it a focal point might help. i like the mood.
same with the map: i find it a bit small, and can't quite understand if i'm looking at it through some sort of glass frame or something... the hands are also somewhat distracting, and the little skull icons look a bit as if they were added on an afterthought. anyway, i must say that you're doing a great job here.
jmorris:
cool map. hats off for the actually nice lens flare effect... are those smudge tool traces?
digging the mood of the cove image, and the way you rendered the waves is really cool. i'd like a version without the figure in the foreground, tho.
ArtZealot:
neat map. that dagger is an especially sweet detail.
also, nice colors in your picture - somewhat ethereal i'd say. the color of the water is a bit confusing, i really just realized that its actually water and not a grassy meadow...
tsujni:
interesting style + concept (a bit far fetched, maybe). i wish the cove image was a little more detailed.
mickeymao:
nice. i really like the map, the only nitpick i have: the 'pirate's cove' line feels out of place. the image is also nice in its simplicity (that's meant in a positive way, of course).
jfwalls:
the map is a bit small and maybe a bit generic (?), otherwise it's fine. your image is stunning. it really brings back some childhood memories (monkey island'n stuff). lovely colors and mood. the additional aerial view on the right wasn't really needed, but that's just a matter of taste i guess.
mundi:
map is nice, shame it is so small, looks as if there are some details hidden in the resizing algorithm. the background feels a bit rushed.
the image is awesome.
/ev:
it sucks :)
ok, hope i didn't tread on someones toes, but i tried to be as objective as possible.
hats off to everyone, this was a really cool round to be in.

my vote went to jfwalls, like others have said, the trip to monkey island really got the old cobwebs cleared from my head. Man, I wish they did a new 2D monkey island...how freaking awesome would that be!?!!1111
I wish we could vote for multiple entries, that would make it alot easier and would prob be a bit more favourable to the least favourites... :) ...pretty please with icing on top and a cherry and some sprinkles and a flake, Chaos? *puppy dog eyes*

and yeah, a new monkey island game sounds like a good idea.

Awesome round once again good topic idea chaos.
tsujni - I can't really tell what your image is...
Corrick - Cool image but honestly there's not a smidge of water (that I can see) and it seems unfair to people that followed the brief. I just don't feel like the word pirate comes to my mind when I see the pic.
Gaius - Awesome! The only things that really bugs me is the not so subtle clone stamping for the trees...it just looks so cut and pasted on there. The water and rock structure are F*cking glorious though
/ev too bad yours didn't make it to the poll!!

[QUOTE=jmorris;1626998]Awesome round once again good topic idea chaos.
tsujni - I can't really tell what your image is...
The idea, for the map, was for a satellite/probe image in visible spectrum of a "leaking" reactor situated inside a crater on an frozen planet. The environment shot was from the the perspective of inside the crater looking at the reactor tower, lost in the shit storm. The pirate concept was for a signal pirate cove. the pirates running the reactor out of spec in order to manipulate non-normal ( subspace, whatever ) space in the attempt to route, capture, and manipulate intersystem communications. I think i may have lost the pirate concept somewhere in the convoluted knots of my mind. I also failed to link the reactor tower with the crater. Oh, well.

Great round, everyone. It was certainly a challenge not to be too derivative.
Voted for ArtZealot. This image is captivating. I keep looking at it. It has a sense of depth and mystery that makes you wonder what exactly is back there in that (icy?) crevice. I love the contrast between the oily and dank foreground and the frigid background. Certainly elicits feelings of a world beyond a world. Well done.
hallo, very clever use of terrain.
Gaius, as always, your rendering of skies is impeccable. I'd love to know how you do it, but that would just kill the mystery, wouldn't it. Incredibly well rendered map too.
Britt, another fine rendering of not only the image but the map itself. I'm impressed by the correlation between the two, they compliment each other nicely.
jmorris, such a smooth rendering deserves much respect. The lighting is the icing on the cake, your atmosphere is perfect.
tsujni, I can't say I know exactly what's going on here, but it's... intriguing. Great style of rendering as well.
Thanks for the comments!
jmorris, hallo, you're right. I think I may've been a little overzealous with the arid climate. The insinuation that water exists but just isn't seen might be too much of a stretch. The water is more in the story, not the image. Better follow the brief, next time.
mickeymao, I could've spent more time on it. Drew the lines in Illustrator, but didn't rough 'em up enough. Never was much of a cartographer. :) I wouldn't trust that North indicator either, I'm crap with directions.

Corrick - I think your image is easily saveable though!! Obviously not for this round but I was looking at your image again (cause its really nice) and it was just sreaming "waterfalls!" at me. I did a MAJOR quickie to show what I mean hope you dont mind. I think it would be really cool to throw down in the Finally Finished. (there's also one underneath the doc in the foreground just in case you can't tell what's going on cause it was REALLY quick

The new format is great!
SO Chaos the COW and CHOW all got updated stars / Icons , seems like no one cares about us hard working EOW artists.
We are the lesser cousins it seems, and the funny thing is a lot of folks consider an environment a lot harder to visualize than a isolated Character or Creature.
I say we all shout for a bit of notice.
