P.O.W.! Challenge 2
Deadline: February 5, 2008, 11:59 pm anywhere in the world.
(Due to Challenge 1 being extended, this challenge is moved one week back. The new deadline is February 12)
Topic: "We'll just work out the details later."
NOTE: The above is a corrected deadline (my fault) and is the 12th, not the 17th.
We're going to try something just a tiny bit different this week... The topic above is a piece of dialogue. This piece of dialogue MUST appear in your comic UNCHANGED (except for the quotes) somewhere. How you build your comic around that statement is the challenge, and as far as that's concerned--ANYTHING GOES! Obviously, this is WIIIIIDDE open...
Interpret any way you wish. Any media. B&W or Color.
You will present your solution as a minimum of three to a maximum of four pages which adhere to standard comic specs as below...
Standard Comic Book Size:
--Trim size: 6 5/8" x 10 1/4"
--Live art area: 6" x 9"
--Bleed size before trimming: 6 7/8" x 10 1/2" (1/8" in all directions)
This thread will be the place you ask questions on this challenge, trash talk, post WIPs and your final art. See the READ THIS FIRST thread for all specs.
Good luck.
P.O.W.! Challenge 3 will be posted before Tuesday Midnight, February 5, 2008.

It's weird how everybody's different. I picked this off a long list I created because it's the first one i saw that I didn't immediately have a decent clue to how to do it. I think this one's gonna be fun...and possibly funny...

No takers yet, huh?
I wanted to do this one, but I ran into some personal stuff, and haven't had time. I'm probably gonna jump on the new one tomorrow.

Hopefully, there some takers. I thought for sure this one would be fairly easy to get around...

funfetus, get your ass in gear...
The deadlines have been moved back a week for Challenge 2, and a few days for Challenge 1. This will be the last extension ever in this thread barring catastrophe... (See announcement above)

I'm on it! Also, spot reserved for WIPs.
Ilaekae -- thanks a lot for doing this, man. I've really been needing motivation to just start drawing pages.
edit: Here's my first page. No dialog yet. I wanna keep the mystery.
edit again: And the second page.
edit: Here's the final entry. Unless I decide to change something. But I think this is it.

I might give it a try. Although after seeing what some of you guys pulled off at the last POW, I'm sure to be outclassed by a few lightyears.

Don't worry. It's not hard. Feb. 17 is nearly 3 weeks away.
These famous last words have been brought to you by Arttorney, proudly restating the obvious, and then proving it is apparently not so obvious after all for 52 years.

the 17th
D:
oh you freakin' wusses. i could see pushing it back from the 5th to 9th, but 17th? apparently this challenge IS a walk in the park.
my sketchbook has a few pow 2 progress updates if anyone is interested.

I have a surprise for all of you...
I made a bonehead typo in the deadline and nobody caught it, including me. The new deadline is supposed to be Feb. 12, not Feb 17.
And I'm going to correct it right now...prick that I am...the deadline IS FEBRUARY 12, NOT FEBRUARY 17.
I'll bet that makes you all feel a bit better, doesn't it?
Actually, I'm a bit sorry about the mistake, so if it really screws anyone up, let me know. I just caught it last night when I couldn't figure out why I couldn't make the scheduling come out right. I would like to stick to the 12th to get us back on schedule, and I think you actually all have plenty of time to make that deadline.

uhm, there are two deadlines? 5th and 12th??

February 3rd, 2008, 02:26 PM
Well, that's a bit of a surprise, but the 17th was a bit generous. I think I'll still make it. I'm finishing up my first page right now, but it's a bear of a page, and the rest should go more quickly. Assuming, of course, that life doesn't happen.

Once again, not obvious at all. I don't know how I do it. I'm still trying to figure out if it's a gift or a curse. If any of you have obvious things you would like me to restate then PM me and, that's right, we'll just work out the details later.

Zeitwolf, the deadline was originally the 5th, but when I extended the first challenge, I had to move up the second to the 12th (one week later) but accidentally typed "7" instead of "2." I even said in the headline I was moving it ONE WEEK but nobody caught the typo, including me...
The deadline is the 12th.
The third challenge is going up the 5th with a deadline of the 19th. That make sense? Remember, we have overlapping (by one week) challenges.

Wow, thanks. :) This is actually the first full sequential page I've done since I was a kid. (Man, I drew some bad comics when I was a kid). I've been doing a lot of studying on visual storytelling, though. Eisner, McCloud, the whole bit.

Not so fast! It yet remains to be seen whether I'll have time to type "We'll just work out the details later." into that first box somewhere. (And then there's the page numbers and stuff)

Funfetus- trash talking is enabled in here. You sound fine.
Where the fork are the rest of you scaredy cats? Eh? If you're just going to work out the details later, then maybe you should already be working on the stuff that is not details. I'm working on mine and will get done in time, but I'd hate to see the participation in this activity drop. It's been great.
Oh. And mine will be straight up real life pen and ink, so it will be three real entries, at least, rather than two entries and a joke. I'm using chancery italic for the lettering (in case we have any calligraphy buffs in here). My prior font doesn't seem to have gone over all that well.

Arttorney -- interesting. I'm very curious to see how the visuals tie it together.
As for me, I'm in the home stretch. And I'm discovering that if I want to do this professionally (and I do) I need to be a LOT faster. Good to get this practice, then. :)

Hmmm -- I feel like there's a much larger story to this lurking in the background.
Also, I keep wondering: Are you an attorney who's also an artist, or is your name Art Torney? Those are your only two options.
arttorney
February 11th, 2008, 11:58 AM
I'm licensed as an attorney in several jurisdictions, including the US patent office. I'm at the height of a fine career which, unfortunately for the rest of you, makes me unafraid to fail while making art. This leads to me falling flat on my face around here spectacularly from time to time, but I learn from it. It's not like I don't care. I want personal development, of course, and also I'm kind of an official with certain organizations, so I have to do good art from time to time (if possible) in order to maintain credibility.
The story is ripped off from the Book of Genesis. I've just updated it with some talk of tech gadgetry, a clownish boss, and I gave Adam a beer gut. We'll see how it flies in the modern age.
Let's have a couple of more entrants up here. Front and center!

This is my effort so far, the deadline did a little trick. I hope I can make it in time, all it needs is an ending. I'll think that tomorrow in school, plenty of time left, jea jea.

Don't worry Hannes. I'm not talking about you. Mickeymao had suggested to Ilaekae that he post everybody's poll images in a horizontal format rather than vertical. I don't want Ilaekae to do that with mine because I think side scrolling is a big pain in the ass. I don't want to be the guy that everybody has to side scroll for.
The idea was so people can see the pages side by side as they would appear in a book. Since I have three pages that are randomly plucked from the middle of a larger story, I can't even know which two of them would have been side by side in a book anyway.
Hannes
February 12th, 2008, 03:41 PM
Oh, well no harm done.
But I like that idea to be able to see pages that are ment to be side by side. That way you can get a better understanding of the pace and over all look of the comic. I suggest that this could be an option in the poll, in future, so that artist can consider all the possibilityes before drawing the comic.

Go into edit mode. Then use the "go advanced" button. In there you can use the little paperclip icon at the top task bar to specify where the image goes since if you put the images in your post one at a time it will put them where you have the cursor at that moment.
At this point, though, you can probably just copy the Attachment information with its brackets and everything to your clipboard. Then paste it at the end. When you saw that work right then go back and delete the place where it is in the wrong order.
It looks like you already did that.
It also looks like we got a lot of divergent styles and subject matter this week in view of how many entries. Good job everybody.
