Welcome to P.O.W.! You've had a chance to do creatures, characters, environments, machines, and random chaos for a while now. Finally, it's time to put it all together and tell a story.
This is the ConceptArts Panels of the Week Challenge, and once a week, we're going to grind out the best comics on the face of the earth...and you're all invited. You WILL produce a minimum of three pages of writing and art unlike anything ever seen before, and you WILL love doing it. If you want to play with the big boys and girls, you're going to have to do what they do...and better, if you can. This is a challenge, not a contest. YOU are your own competition, not the person sitting next to you. All you have to do is WANT to do it...
What we'll be doing:
Once a week, barring interference from holidays, etc., a new Challenge will be posted by Midnight Tuesday, to be completed and posted TWO WEEKS LATER by Midnight Tuesday. This means that there be a one-week overlap to allow you to get your thoughts organized for the second challenge, with a full week to get your art finished.
The subject matter/theme will be kept as open-eneded as possible to allow you the greatest possible latitude in interpreting the challenge. (If this proves to be a problem, we can change it.) The theme will be an abstract situation, a quote, or even a single line of dialogue, then you take it from there. YOU will write, pencil, "ink," "color" (if you wish), and post the final pages for polling by your peers.
WIPs and ideas/sketches/whatever are encouraged, as is trash talk. We will be looking at creativity in both interpretation and execution, quality, and level of finish and all that other good stuff. Entries that are not up to professional level will not be posted for the final polling, but will be critted and discussed in the non-poll thread along with the others. This is a learning process, not just an excuse to show off (...even though some strutting and crowing is permitted within reason).
From time to time, we will have special challenges that will involve collaboration, use pre-existing scripts, and other such goodies. We'll also be doing "mini-challenges" that involve Comics Covers, sequential newspaper strips and some other fun stuff we come up with.
Special threads will be established for tutorials, comics discussion, suggestions and ideas and just about anything else that might pop up, so get your shit together so we can ALL see it.
The Rules...
1. Present only your best work. This is a professional-level challenge, and no WIPs, sketches, sloppy or incomplete last-minute artwork will be accepted for final polling.
2. We will ALWAYS work to traditional comic book size (See specifications below) unless stated otherwise in that week's challenge description.
3. All content of your entry must be ORIGINAL. No use of previously-published or copyrighted characters is permitted (A possible exception MAY be made for an obvious parody, but must be cleared by the Head Monkeys first).
4. You are being given as much latitude as possible in interpreting the topic, but you MUST STICK to that topic or run the risk of being eliminated from the polling.
5. Only one complete entry is permitted for each topic challenge. (See specifications below).
6. No old art is permitted. Each entry must have been created specifically for the challenge.
7. There is no restriction on the style or approach, and any content within reason can be used to fulfill the challenge EXCEPT what would generally be accepted by an intelligent person as pornography--images that portray sexual penetration, for example, or offensively detailed cruelty and torture or pedo. Simple NUDITY is not considered pornography. Modified photography MAY be used appropriately for backgrounds or minimal special effects, but should NOT make up the majority of the entry. ALL CHARACTERS MUST BE CREATED AS ART, not photography.
8. Unless otherwise noted within the particular challenge description for that week, art may be prepared as black and white OR color.
9. The deadline will be 11:59 p.m. on the day of the deadline anywhere in the world, but may automatically extend up to 24 hours depending on the Head Monkey's working schedules.
10. Every page of your entry must have the P.O.W.! Challenge Number and your on-line signature followed by your page number so we can keep track of things (For example, "POW! 2...Whoever...Page 3"). Don't make it huge, just large enough so we don't miss it.
11. We recommend doing your art so it ends up at a size appropriate for print reproduction if it ever comes to that. And save your files. We may all want to have some fun later with them, and it would be a shame if you couldn't participate because your cat ate the files.
Specifications...
Each entry (unless specifically stated otherwise in the weeks challenge description) will consist of a minimum of THREE COMPLETE PAGES of a "comic book" executed at the standard sizes noted below. You can go to FOUR pages if you think your idea requires it. Other specs will be in that week's description.
Standard Comic Book Size:
--Trim size: 6 5/8" x 10 1/4"
--Live art area: 6" x 9"
--Bleed size before trimming: 6 7/8" x 10 1/2" (1/8" in all directions)
(Working hint... If you work up in size--and most do--a 10" x 15" page size will reduce at 66% to approximately 6.66" x 10", which is close enough for government work.)
Posting your art:
Post each page in order as a separate jpeg at 96 dpi, properly labeled as noted above, 10" inches high (this is to allow you to use the attachment function, which will only allow 10" high images). If you host your own images, you can post at actual size.
If your art bleeds off the page, make sure you allow the extra width and height shown above in the "Bleed size," It's a little difficult to add it later if we decide at some point to actually print a comic collection of our efforts... (yeah...don't hold your breath, Bubba... :P...but it COULD happen.)
The announcement thread for a particular weekly challenge will be the place for rabble-rousing, trash talk, WIPs and roughs if you want to get crits and guidance, and will be the place where your final entries will be posted. A new thread will be started for polling. The Head monkeys will be the final word on whether you are entered in the polling or not--for example, if you broke any of the rules above.
