how do I set this feature on in Photoshop 7? I cant find it anywhere. ive been trying to draw clouds and a tutorial suggests to do this for each layer.

In Painter 6 and Painter 7:

At the top of the Objects palette's Layers section, check the Preserve Transparency box.

In Painter 8:

At the top of the Layers palette, check the Preserve Transparency box.

The Preserve Transparency box does not have to be checked for each Layer. It remains checked until you uncheck it and applies to all Layers until it's unchecked.

Don't forget to uncheck it if you want to paint on transparent areas of a Layer and/or apply other effects to transparent areas of a Layer.

Otherwise, when you begin to paint, your brushstrokes won't appear.

Um, doesn't this thread/topic belong in the Painter 7/8 Feedback & Help forum?

Kodiak asked for photoshop 7. But hey, you could've asked this in the lounge section.

Answer : On your Layers palette, to the right of the word "Lock :" there's a small checker icon. This is the preserve transparency, or lock transparent pixels if you prefer.
You could also try to flip trough your manual a bit ;p
