I know CA is adding more and more fine art content and I'd really like to see a tut on the different ways of measuring (sight size, plumblines, etc) maybe not as the sole focus, but it's the kind of stuff that is hard to explain textually and is great to see.

Just so you guys realize, say, you have 9 layers and you merge them all down, and name it "Merged", your next layer will not be autonamed "layer 2", it will be autonamed "Layer 10"

having 94 active layers would make saving and flipping horizontally take approximately around 5 and a half minutes. The most I've ever had up at once was around.... 42, unmerged, and it took me about 2 an a half minutes just to save, 3 minutes to flip horizontal. when you merge them it takes about 1/20th of the time.

Hey Hm333, with all this DVD knowledge you must have drawn at least 1 picture?

Andrew just completed his voiceover last night. It's filled with incredibly insightful remarks about both his process and artwork in general. It shouldn't take too long to mix in the music and put the final together, but the plan is to release Nox part II first. I can't give exact dates but it won't be too long.

Yumiko and I went to Paris and Lyon and took 12 gigs of pictures at the louvre and dorsay. I wanted some great examples and so we went to where we could find the best. My composition vid is fully recorded and voiceover is complete it just needs editing at this point. I am in Shanghai on biz now but both will be done before the new year gods willing.

Hhhmmmm... This is very exciting, i have purchased every release i've been able, gonna check out Nox1 tonight after i get off work, and I'm really stoked to check out yours Jason. Is Android's Digital Fine Art Series Part 1 the Shape Theory in Z-Brush video or is it something else? If so, I must have it *clutches fist and laughs maniacally*

And the prices get bumped up after Jan 1. i see. Still a bargain if you ask me, but it seems that Massive Black and CA are getting all of my money this holiday season. How am i going to afford to eat when i'm in Seattle huh!? Hawk my art supplies? Test the digestibility of oil paint? Doesn't matter, it's going kick everyones ass and melt our feeble brains, or i'll eat my hat...

MassiveDVD

call0ps (and others): Manley recorded his color theory and composition tutorials, but when we reviewed them it was decided that while the voiceover was great, the visuals could use some work. So they're being re-done so that we can deliver a better product. Sorry! :)

Carl Dobsky has been really busy (teaching, working at MB, getting work ready for private shows) and the project had to be sidelined for a bit. This extra space, though, allowed us to really give the downloads a push, so in some ways its a good thing. I spoke with Carl earlier in the week and we'll be getting back on track soon. Sorry, again! I really am.

---
The video department was a one man team (me) for a long time, and we recently added Jonah, and we might be adding another person soon. With all the added resources you should be seeing more and better quality releases in the coming months. And, by the way, it's primarily the support of conceptart.org members that has allowed this growth, so thank you.

my apologies ahead of time for poor grammar....was never good at it:(

"Deep inside the bowels of massive black there was a mighty sword being forged. The forger? Rich no less. He raised his hand to the god's and striked down with herculean force. With each strike the formless metal took shape. "aye", he said. "this shall do fine." Then with haste he traveled to the mountains of the dwarves. It was there that the finest diamond was excavated. It brilliance caused gasps of awe. They then went to work. They chipped away, they smothed its edges, they created a tip even the god's would envy. Then with his shaft and tip(not his penis:harbl: ) he went off to the mountain of the divine. This is where he combined both rock and metal to create the greatest pencil the world had ever seen. Then Rich went back to massive black and created a video of huge-like proportions. At this time they created a page for there video and set a price. "how about the regular 15$?" a man said. Rich slapped the man with the cold back of his hand. "this pencil is beyond anything anyone could conceive, how could such a low price be put upon it?" The man pondered. "how about 1000$?" "Aye," rich said. they looked at what they had done with wide grins...and it was good"

I'm going to be bold and do a request here, as I looked around both here and with various competition (i.e Workshop et al), and I have yet to find any other then Marko's vids that are focused on CHARACTER.

Androids Boss Monster is interesting, but is more about the process of painting and finding cool shapes then actually concept.

So my request, should you choose to accept it, would be to get some Pipeline character creation/Ideation vids, prefferably going from "Brief, thumbs" (where important part would be "how to follow the brief and think of clients wishes and other things") through Sketch-phase, Orthos, illustration-phase, maybe a bit on modelling (though modeling characters in 3d probably is an entire vid in itself, or even several vid's), and finalizing.

Similarily to the vehicle vids by Kemp Remillard (awesome!) and the Steambot guy's pipeline-dvd's, I think this would be extremely interesing for anyone who wish to learn more about creating characters.

Almost as important as the actual footage of the painting/ideation process would be hearing thoughts on how to cut corners if pressed by time (i.e. what to think of as far as most needed for clients to see, not "quick fixes to make your art turn f****g-A!", as we all know that is more a fact of practice and study.), what to think of when making Orthographics, how to best please the client, how to fit the wishes between modelers (if any), directors/producers and any other people involved in the process of hiring you and evaluating your conceptuals. What to think of when your things get refused (in essence- if my stuff gets turned down, what should I ask, what should I try to think of to improve and come up with better ideas for the client) and so on.

Andrew Jones' videos are great as far as inspirational talk, Kemp does a great job at explaining what to think about with vehicles and their design, Whit also feels extremely inspiring (for me in any case) for explaining the sensation of feeling like a newcomer amongst giants (which is how it feels at times on these forums) and the other guys have their strongpoints in the talk.
I would be very happy if the "pipeline-inspiration" type of talk could be put into such a vid as described above...

Like I said, Marko's vds are excellent, I'd just want to see a pipeline-production-type variant of creating characters. Something along the lines of Kemps vehicle-vids...

Thank you for the vids you have there btw, they are really helpful for me.

studio / metal: thanks for the suggestion. we've got something like that in the works, which is another way of saying that we've talked about it but haven't actually done anything. :)

the process is being taught at the conceptart atelier with some really nice results so we'll try and make something more widely available.

I'm going to be bold and do a request here, as I looked around both here and with various competition (i.e Workshop et al), and I have yet to find any other then Marko's vids that are focused on CHARACTER.

not sure if you've ever taken a look at it, but from GWorkshop, iain mccaig's "visual storytelling" series is an awesome, AWESOME one, dealing mostly with character. check it out sometime. (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/imc01.html)

Phillippe "HardcorePixxx" Guyenne - Concept Design/Digital Painting

Sean "Cheeks-74" Galloway - Character Design

Daniel "DSIllustration" Dos Santos - Oil Painting

Wesley Burt - Pencil rendering/Drawing from life/Sketchbook drawing

Gez "Gezstar" Fry - Character Design

Dan Milligan - Storyboarding

Looking forward to the portrait and color theory ones.

I would like to see a character based download but focusing on one character, same brief but using maybe three totally different styles: for instance, one style being realism, the other being cartoonish (Ala Team Fortress) and another style, maybe highly japanese orientated. I think that would be truly helpful for anyone looking to get in the industry and having to think about how to adapt well to different projects.

I think you could cover a lot in that respect, anatomy changes and exaggerations, how color will play a key role with the overall style, flat shaded, blended etc. Bring something like that out, and ill buy all three of them within a heart beat. :) Thanks!

Can we get something from Bengal? I dig his work.

edit: Looking over some artist works I think are cool it occured to me that there are two questions that could be addressed through this form that would be awesome.

1: How would you go about creating a painting of a broader scope. Not just a single character but a large piece with multiple charcacters engaging in different ways in a full enviorment. Kind of a this is how you put everything together in a larger scope series. Maybe it's because I've been at this whole drawing and painting for only about a year but I find the thought of doing a large piece daunting, and would find instruction on the development and execution of larger works to be very informative.

2: Bridging the gap between stylizing and accuracy. We got to see Chan doing a speedpainting and it was pretty cool to see him work, but during the tutorial he mentions that there are artists who are very good at using very few marks to give you the impression of forms with very little actual exact rendering involved. Jason Manley seems to have a pretty good handle on that really painterly form of speedpainting. Honestly though I would be willing to say that you would be a much better judge of who at MB would be best to tap for something like that. Again maybe it's just a lack of experience on my part but the looseness of form that an artist can achieve while putting forth this cool image is confusing to me.

Thanks in advance for considering it. ;)

Here are the upcoming downloadables to look forward to for December:

Dec: 8
3. Jason Manley (yeah me)- Color and the Theory of Light, parts 1,2
4. Jason Manley (double me): Composition and The Visual Structure of Masterworks.

This was December 2007 and it's nearly December 2008 :(

yep..am in france for a few days on biz...but i got some more material for my downloads so it will be another week or so...hopefully next friday. I have all the recording done..as well as voice...just need to clean up the edits and add my new material..looking forward to getting this stuff out...have put a lot of thought into it, that is for sure.

"next friday" passed a while ago :(

Yumiko and I went to Paris and Lyon and took 12 gigs of pictures at the louvre and dorsay. I wanted some great examples and so we went to where we could find the best. My composition vid is fully recorded and voiceover is complete it just needs editing at this point. I am in Shanghai on biz now but both will be done before the new year gods willing.

Maybe before this new year?!

call0ps (and others): Manley recorded his color theory and composition tutorials, but when we reviewed them it was decided that while the voiceover was great, the visuals could use some work. So they're being re-done so that we can deliver a better product. Sorry! :)

Still waiting............. Any updates? Geez, it's not like Manley's busy running a company, workshops, and a large community. I totally understand the delays, but I'm just anxious for the vids.

Just wondering what the time frame is for Carl part 2 and 3. Also, is the color theory video coming out soon?

As an aside, the videos you mentioned that needed a face-lift because the visuals were not up to par - wouldn't it be better to just release what you have for those who would benefit greatly from them rather than to wait for a prettier version? Surly, if the information is solid and applied in a practical manner it would be of benefit all around, no matter how fantastic the artwork was.

Personally, I would love to have the perspective and color theory vids ASAP. Its been a long wile since I learned about these basics. I would love to get a fresh "perspective" (pun intended) on the foundational techniques for these subjects. If for nothing else but to reground some of my bad habits that have accumulated over the years.

I really appreciate what you have done for the art community and can't wait to get my hands on those vids when released.

Take care,
Jeff

Request:
I have recently realized that quite often in MB downloads it is said "normally the client would [insert various things here] but since I am my own client for this video I wont..."

With that in mind, it would be utterly cool to get a MB production-pipeline video. I have seen the ones from the steambot-crew but it woudl be very cool to see MB pipeline ( 1: Character, 2: Creature, 3: Environment, 4: Props, 5: ? etc )
I have seen Marko's dvd which is gold for character creation, but it doesn't show the pipeline, just one step in it. Kemps vehicle-series seem to be a pipeline-video though. (I lack the last part but for the rest it really seem like a pipeline-type series).

Just to get an idea over the possible ways.

I can easily see paying 50 USD for each of those... Alternatively splitting them up like Kemps and with ~USD20 for each part...

Well actually I've already checked out several vids, so I guess I can answer my question for you. Jason Chan (quick sketch or final illustration) and Whit Brachna (speed paints or outdoor environment) are probably the ones I would recomend for technique. I haven't seen Nox's yet, but seeing as it's much more polished I'm guessing it spends less time with the basics.

Burtzum
June 28th, 2009, 12:24 AM
Whit Brachna's mountain, speedpaint, and masks vids are great. He talks about general art basics, about getting a more natural look in photoshop, working efficiently in photoshop, and he also supplies his brushes for you to play with... all around nice downloads. They were helpful to me even though I had already been painting in photoshop for a few years. There are some key things that he said that have helped me begin to break away from a serious problem I've had with all my digital paintings.

Nox said something in his video that also pointed out a critical flaw in my work to me. Every vid I've watched has some good nuggets here and there. But for general PS painting I'd recommend Whit's vids the most to start with.

I think sPCLaW is referring to a painting did at the last workshop by Manchess which was essentially a sequel to the first video. I believe they recorded the process.

I read the Justin Sweet's name a lot in these last threads.... it would be really good to see a complete illustration by him... I bought the video in which he did a centaur and even if it's only 15 miutes long it really inspired me and opened my mind...
Want to see more from him if possible.

Erm... what happened to the Jason Chan 3 thread?

It's coming... just figured it was a little premature since a few other vids are coming out first. My bad.

Anyway, requests noted everyone. Thank you. :)

We've got a few surprises coming. :yayca:

To be more specific about Jamie Jones, I'd like to see something from him focusing on how to get a more traditional painterly look with photoshop. I can't seem to figure that shit out. And hes one of the few who really has that down. I'm willing to bet its half about thinking like a traditional painter, and half about knowing how to properly use photoshop and the brush engine to that end (and what not to use/what to use sparingly).

Of course I'm sure he also has plenty to say about color and composition as well.

Bradley is right. If you had read my post more thoroughly you would have picked up in that. Im talking about the new Above the Timberline with the composition looking from behind the figure up the mountain. I watched him do the whole thing.

Here's a pretty decent step by step with Mr. Sweet... no audio or anything, but you can get a gist of his technique.

Arrow One, who did the Manchess video, is leaving for Europe this Friday to film Black Frog, HPX, and Djurdjevic.

I'm stuck in the office working with Chan, Kei, and Dobsky. ;)

Manchess will be doing another one as soon as all the other stuff gets finished.

any news on these?? :geekg:

I can only agree with sone_one, all great artists and very cool topics.
I´m waiting for Dobsky´s too, the first two downloads had tons and tons of applicable and hands-on information in it.
Thanks for all the work you people put into these :)

Hey, it would be nice to see some more vids on drawing in general, like you know, pencil drawing, like Marco's dvd.

Agree with Mike there. There are dozens of digital tutorials out there but just a few on traditional drawing.

It would be nice to see another Whit Brachna video more focused on atmoshperic perspective. Maybe some simple solution how to create depth and space in black and white or with colour. His videos is very helpful and educational.

Any word on when we can expect Dobsky 3 point perspective? I've been looking forward to that for a long time, as 3 point melts my brain... I love the fact that you can learn really solid fundementals like hardcore perspective here, its stuff that too many artists fake or ignore, even at a professional level.

Nick

ps. Sorry if i've missed the answer to the same question on here somewhere already
