View Full Version : Where Did Your Online Name Came From?
Emerald_Mara85

Like it says above,
Lets just say I'm curious...
I find that alot of people have some cool/weird/unusual names here.
Guess I'll start 1st.
Emerald = Name of a character I created when...I was like 13 or 14? The name sorta stuck.
Mara = Name of a women from Star Wars novels.
85 =...The year I was born...yea I know I'm old.
*If there was a thread like this before, it did not appeared on the search*
Seedling
November 27th, 2007, 09:25 AM
Sure, there’s another thread like this around here somewhere, but no worries. :)
“Seedling” – I wanted a simple noun of something humble but with potential, to remind me to always keep learning.
My alternate handle is more fun: “Stoloniferous”. Bonus points to anyone who figures that one out.
Iliada
November 27th, 2007, 09:35 AM
Stoloniferous is a plant with stolons =)
And Iliada is what I called my first WoW character (female dwarf pala). I couldn't play an hour without getting a compliment for the name, everyone thought it was very beautiful. I've found out later on that it is Greek for the story about Troy and all that, The Iliad in English (Homer's. And no, not Homer Simpson). I think it sounds good, and gives me a bit of anonymity on the internet =)
Alzorath
November 27th, 2007, 09:36 AM
Alzorath was a character name I used for a lot of things back in the early/mid 90s...first semi-permanent use of it though for me was back in Diablo 1, for a sorcerer I played at a friend's house regularly (online that is).
I have used it in a wide array of games, forums, etc. etc. - and had it stolen, and seen it used a couple times. It is also unfortunately confused for "Azeroth" (an area in the now popular Warcraft series, which I continually note did not inspire the name - in the early 90s, I had never heard of Warcraft, and I'm honestly not even sure if Warcraft 1 had released by the time I started using it on paper for character names).
I've tried to deviate from this name several times, but couldn't get away from it (people would still call me "Alz" online thanks to keeping in touch with friends from the old gaming days). One of the most enduring ones being "Logic_X" ... though that didn't last long at all (maybe 6 months).
85 =...The year I was born...yea I know I'm old.
I was born in 1983...and I won't concede to being old until I need to wear a diaper :P.

November 27th, 2007, 09:37 AM
That sure was fast, Iliada!
I have invasive creepers, see?
[edit] Emerald, I'll be 30 this spring. But that's nothing. Wait until Ilaekae wanders in and starts talking about the Good Ol' Days back in the Roman empire.
Iliada
November 27th, 2007, 09:46 AM
I have hips (botanical) which are invasive too.
Are you interested in botany by any chance, Seedling?

Farvus
November 27th, 2007, 10:01 AM
I created my nickname five years ago. The main influence was fantasy novels/pen&paper RPG games. My personality and interests changed during that time and now I would consider such nickname as slightly infantile.
However people on the CA and other forums know me as Farvus so I don't have enough courage to change it :^^;: .

Iliada...yea that is one pretty name...
Alzorath,
Your name is cool in my book!
Seedling,
Arr...I can't help it...I'm 22, and I'm still in college...that is considered old around here(Malaysia)...unless it was some higher studies...
And you're 30 huh?
I thought you were older, haha! Interesting name to stick with.
Farvus,
Fantasy pen and paper huh? If you don't mind me poking at you...I'm guessing you're...in your 30s or late 20s?

Whyatt Thrash...
This stuck with me since high school... I grew up in a rather posh neighbourhood, and coming from a different upbringing I was always viewed as somewhat of white trash... So the Filter song "They call me white trash" kindof became my anthem... "Whyatt" to make it sound more like a name, and well... "Thrash"... Just because.. :)
I've used the same name since I started out surfing the internets basically, so I'm pretty easy to track. :)
This leads to it instead of giving me anonymity actually makes it quite easy for anyone to find out anything about me, so I gotta be just as careful about what I say and do as in real life. Which is a Good Thing in the end, I think...

Unbreakable
November 27th, 2007, 10:54 AM
I got the name Unbreakable from the Kanye West song Through the Wire .."Unbreakable what you thought they call me Mr. Glass."....It means that no one can break his will and that's how i feel about art no one can break my will.

"Juju" - Absoluslty NOTHIGN! Just got tierd of JUST "Vhan"

Yeah, my post-count is an embarassment. :P
Plants are fascinating! My knowlege of plants is still very small, but growing. Buying a house with a big yard has suddenly got me fascinated with native New England plants. I've now got so many seeds planted that I won't know what's what in the spring! I've taken to dragging my friends around through the wild property adjacent to ours so that I can collect seeds and see what's out there. Even now when everything is dormant there's still so much to see!

I just use a shorter version of my name, Melissa and my last name. I'm too unoriginal when it comes to creative screen names. =p I was known as Silaria though on a few of the gaming sites I posted at years ago. Twas a character I made back in the days of Baldurs Gate. :D
Ilaekae
November 27th, 2007, 01:01 PM
Ilaekae is the name I invented for a race of "Shadow People" in a series of stories I've been writing on and off for about 10 years. Still in rough stage, but I hope to get it whipped into a novel someday. The Ilaekae are seven interbreeding species that form the basis for all of man's legends about faeries, werewolves, demons, angels, mermaids, etc., who had to go into hiding when humanity tried to wipe them out around 5,000 BCE. The stories are about their reappearance in the modern world.

I took my nickname out of a Marilyn Manson song:
The Golden age of grotesque -
"....we're the LOW ART GLOOMINATI
and we aim to depress
the scabaret sacrilegends
this is the golden age of grotesque....."
My nickname actually used to be "lowartgloominati" but I decided that it was much too long for me so I cut it down to just gloominati.
smugbug
November 27th, 2007, 01:29 PM
Tis my first name and the initial of my last. How interesting is THAT?! :tihi:
My original name here, Creativesmugbug, was just...odd, IMO. And I've never liked it; hence, the change to my name. There's a story behind "creativesmugbug", but I won't go into it.

8) Yeah man I'm Cambodian. hey thats cool ur girl is khmai. Don't she teaches you any khmai words...like "a Gadaw thode" can't seem to spell it right but if u ask ur girl i think she will know what it says...
Well the last time i went to church this white guy went up to speak and i was like "old folks here not gonna really understand this dude unless he spoke khmer." The next thing i know khmer word came out of him clear and understandable :wtf: i was shocked that any other person other than cambodian can speak khmer that clear.
Well where ever or whom ever he learned that from must be good at teaching him and plus that guy was a mercenary helping cambodia so he had it easy...i think...
and man that is one long ass mexican name :jawdrop:

You know, even from just those few lines of summary, and I kinda' wanna' read that future-book, Ilaekae.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zilant
The duality of the two heads is fascinating to me.
Normally in mythology, there's a pretty prevalent moral dichotomy. Something's either evil, or it's good, shades of grey are far and few between.
Even the story makes it hard to pin a label on. On one hand, it's murderous and vengeful, on the other hand, the main source of the dispute that gave the opportunity for vengance was humans invade it's territory and setting it's fellow snakes on fire.

Ampersand
November 27th, 2007, 02:58 PM
Ampersand is just a word I like, and a rather nice bit of punctuation. I tend to hoard interesting [useless] words, and 'ampersand' was one of them. Some time in '05 I decided it would make a decent enough screenname, and I've stuck with it ever since, wherever it hasn't been taken already.
Nobody online bothers calling me by my real name, I'm just 'Ampy'. :^^;:

Gloominati, you might be interested to know that "gloominati" in those lyrics most likely came from/is the opposite of Illuminati (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illuminati), which is a secret society that wants to establish a world government (if you believe in the conspiracy theories, anyway).
Anyway, my internet name is very simple. Moai are the giant stone heads that the islanders of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) made. There was a time a few years ago when I got very interested in tikis, moai, and other Polynesian statues, so it was right on the surface of my brain when I joined this site.

hehe, thank's I didn't know that (well I knew about illuminati but not that gloominati is an allusion to be an opposite of that) Funny thing is that I picked this name about 4 years ago (when I was 15) just because it sounded kinda "cool" and it stuck to me until today being just "a name" having no real sense or reason, what makes it kinda boring and interesting at the same time IMO :D

It's our flaws that makes out our personalities, not what´s perfect or good about us. And I got plenty of flaws my entire mind is flawed. And I'm working on my art flaws until those that's left becomes my style. Nah I keep working until I could be anyone, so go crit my sketchbook (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=57115&page=4) it's an really easy target for some constructive crits...pretty please

http://wiki.bmezine.com/index.php/Surface_Piercing_Rejection
LOL i am very educated on surface piercings thanks...It's nice to see someone allude to someone being uneducated when they don't really know the person they are talking to.
I know I shouldn't have said they weren't meant to stay,...much too general...what I meant was that "certain piercings in certain areas that get a lot of movement aren't as likely to stay on certain ppl. Two ppl can get the exact same piercing but one may take and one may reject, it sometimes is just the person's body and there are lots of variables to that as well."
I had a custom made bar for the cleavage piercing (being [ shaped) The problem, why i didn't keep it, was b/c there's not a ton of skin between the breasts (sternum area) to grab and considering I don't exactly have small breasts and it probably had too much friction in the area. It didn't reject per se, but it grew out a little over the course of a year (1/8") and then stopped. It got in the way of bras and stuff and with the extra length it moved and made it irritated. I didn't wanna get another bar made to accommodated the small amount, not to mention the pain of putting another staple sized bar through an inch of skin (clamp is a bitch!). The rest of the piercings I don't have anymore weren't surface, but random ear stuff. I have had my piercings for 6+ years, otherwise without problems. :)

Sepulverture
November 28th, 2007, 02:06 AM
My name is two words smooshed together. Sepulchral + overture = Sepulverture. It was the name of a band that I played in (guitar, bass, and drums just rotating between the three for different parts), it's a word that I made up for the band because it was a kind of black metal band. More recently it was also the name of a trance demo cd that I gave to a DJ buddy of mine in Denver and he uses at gigs there occasionally.
Diphallia
November 28th, 2007, 03:43 AM
Diphallia, a fortune finding.
Me and my brother installed BF2142 and tried to get some cool username for our chared soldier.
Everything between Azazel and lillies was alredy taken.
So I found Diphallia on wikipedia.
1. The medical condition wich it stands for is so cool.
2. The name is cool.
So what is Diphallia?
I've only met (actually not met him, actually) one who knew what the name meant before I told him (maybe he googled it :O).
But that guy hates me for my attitude at the forums now, so I'm not gonna mention his name.
Oh, Diphallia.
It's when you're born with two penises, which kinda reflects my personality in some awkward way.
And I found the name when I was 14.
And I intend to hold on to it!
So if you see a Diphallia in five-ten years, it's me!
Please call me a dick (or cock) it's no insult, or just call me Dip.
That works fine too.

christopher. pronoun [st-o-ff]. go figure. i've had every variant of it, too - christoph, the christoph, the stoph, christo's, stophles, i just like this one best. its stuck pretty well, too, i'll probably be using it as my "pen name" for future publications.

I love how people here just call me by my first name, Max. It works really well for me.
I use my real name. I look at the artist gallery up there, and the majority of them use there real name. It seems real perfessional to me. So I did the same.
I agree. I use my real name because I want whatever I do, positive or negative, to be credited to my real name, and I'd rather be addressed by my real name than a handle, as it feels more direct than some off-shoot comment to my left side. It also makes meeting people in real life easier, as I can be addressed by my real name there as well as online.
There is a certain culture that I'm interested in, and hope to one day be a part of, that shuns handles and the people who use them. They seem to think that hiding behind another name that wasn't any of your original names is a juvenile trend used by people who don't participate in very intellectual or credible activities. People who do things like this are seen as the scum of the earth by the people in this culture.
I don't dislike people who use handles myself, but I do like to see people who use their real name, and naturally feel more respect towards them (I bet most won't care for my respect though, haha).
Stovieheed
November 29th, 2007, 08:14 AM
Stovieheed It started off as a funny insult from my dad, Stovies are a Scottish meal (basically mashed potato and sausages or corned beef) known to be fairly thick and heed just means head only pronounced with a Fife accent. He called me it one day a couple of my mates were around and it just kinda stuck, people call me Stovie for short. my dad also reckons im not very bright but i can lift heavy things! Hes full of praise :)

There is still alot of people I wanna know about their names and Idiot_Apathy is one of them! I just gotta know why he name himself so!
Oh and Max, the reason I didn't put up my real name is for security. Well I'm just following what my dad says years back. I guess putting up your real name is kinda cool...

Maybe, but handles are certainly more popular. My mother always went on about Internet security like I didn't have common sense and didn't know how to defend myself, lawl. She also likes to rant negative things at heavy metal music and violent videogames.. Basically anything that's a popular belief among the media. I wish she'd take a deeper look though. I'm not sure as to the opinion my father has about using real names on Internets.

I don't dislike people who use handles myself, but I do like to see people who use their real name, and naturally feel more respect towards them. . .
Being an employee (and more specifically, a female employee) at a game company, I have typically stuck to the anonymity of pseudonyms for safety and privacy reasons. When I go home at the end of the day, I wanted to be unrecognizable to our fans.
Here, however, I decided to use my use my real name alongside my handle because I wanted to offer advice that could help people to get into the games industry. To that end, I see it as only fair that if I did give bad information, it could be traced back to me.
Aside from professionals giving advice or promoting themselves, I think it is a terrible idea for someone to use their real name online. For non-professionals, display of personal data sacrifices the safety of anonymity for no gain. “A rose by any other name smells as sweet,” yadda yadda yadda.

well... my real name is Joe Smith.
i think i'm safe by virtue of the fact that my name couldnt get anymore generic.
here check this out, i was on that faggy website Myspace the other day and decided to do a search for myself:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v386/greeku1/fuck_myspace.png
72,000 pages are a match for 'joe smith'
32,000 matched my name, age, and gender.
26 people are posing out as me.
183 users also hate the 26 posers.
43 pages some up if i type my name in conjunction with my social security number.
now i realize those are based on a keyword search function, but that still means i'm relatively an untrackable ghost online, and i'm not even trying to hide.

December 1st, 2007, 08:59 AM
Well, bleifstift was already taken. Bleistift is German for pencil and brei is German for porridge so my name would be porridgepen in English. You can interpret that name any way you want.

'Caramel e150d' is the food colouring in Diet Coke, which I'm horribly addicted to.

December 4th, 2007, 12:49 AM
I once ran a keyloging program to see what key i pressed the most for a week, and it was "F11". I got the results moments before I registered a new username at some website and it just stuck with me. I think its the key I hit the most at the time because i set it as undo in all my programs :)

Warground Zer0, kind of makes me sound like a moronic war monger but nothing could be farther from the truth.
The first time I ever came across the CA website and started drawing I wrote a story called War Ground Zer0 and it pretty much stuck with me.

I used to be Rhineville. Now I'm Jason Rainville. Rhineville came from merging my two backgrounds, french and german. Now I'm just little ol' me.

subversive-imaginati
December 12th, 2007, 07:39 AM
Well I had to have some sort of online handle and I figured that I was a bit odd so I wanted Subversive as my nickname, unfortunately it's taken on most sites, so I figured since my primary form of art is fantasy and that has to do with imagination, I'd stick imagination on the end, it got cut off though. So I ended up being Subversive-imaginati not Subversive-imagination.
The odd thing is the name grew on me and is now firmly stuck and of course everyone asks if it's a reference to the illuminati. :D
Lord Of All Bunnies
December 12th, 2007, 09:33 AM
I am Lord Of All Bunnies. By lord I do not mean that I have dominion over all the furry hops but that in the past I was labeled, or self-labeled my recollection is bad, because of certain characteristics, behaviors, and personality quirks, as an embodiment of “bunny.” From embodiment it is only a short hop, sigh, to “lord.”
I hope you followed all that, I am not repeating it.
LOL!

Venom i just like
and vindicta is latin for vengance.
Because i stopped being badb when my boyfriend which i based badb on, decided to cheat on me. so i swore vengance.
Not all that interesting.

an old counterstrike/b.net username that i keep on using, no real story behind it, wombat is a funny sounding animal name and if it's invincible thats all the better. i should probably ditch it and use my real name if i want to sound serious and professional like though.

December 26th, 2007, 07:37 PM
My Real name (which will not be mentioned) Actualy turned out to be a Russian word which is REALLY nifty because I love speaking Russian and Czech when i can.
When i was 14 one of my friends started calling me an "evening kiss" because well... One i always wear black (go figure) and i was as "mysterious as the evening, but as gentle as a kiss" The name stuck but now at days everyone just calls me "Eve" =)
Vermis
December 27th, 2007, 10:36 AM
A Lovecraftish Stephen King story featuring an old tome translated as 'The Mysteries of the Worm'. I can't remember all of the original latin title but 'Worm' was 'Vermis' (which I should have found out elsewhere, considering my affinity for things zoological).
Soon after I made my first online forays on a computer in the same library. Stuck for a user name I decided to go for the word that came to mind the most (and seemed suitably self-deprecating). It stuck.

January 15th, 2008, 05:49 AM
I guess I wanted to start clean when I came to CA. Remove all the memories from Deviantart, personal blindness and fear, and just start anew. So in line of that I wanted a name that wasn't like any I'd had before anywhere.
Making this name felt like making a painting, and I know just how ridiculous that sounds. In my head there's colors assigned to every symbol or letter or number in written text, so if you'd see a novel it'd be a combination of those colors to create not only the story but also the visual written part as combinations and rythems of colors, much like a van Gogh painting.
I wanted my name to have a certain color combo that I enjoy a lot, and the letters came afterwards, although I wanted a T (black) to start with. Then came the colors, yellow (a), yellowed orange (n), dark green (g), dark red (r) and black again (im).
Awfully longwinded for a new name isn't it? But by now I've taken a liking to being called Tan, I may just keep it.

January 15th, 2008, 05:52 AM
Mine is, quite simply and more boringly, created out of my first name (Ayla) and the beginning letter of my last (P). Not a very creative name, but I wanted something I could use all the time, and I'd be sure not to hate it when I got older. C:

January 19th, 2008, 09:13 AM
hmm let me see now, mine is going to take some explanation :)
When I was thirteen, a friend of mine enacted an actor from a very bad series by saying (in Dutch): 'hello, it is I, robert, and I've got a bomb'. For some reason, that sentence settled in my brain, and when I got myself my own e-mail adress it sprang up again, only I changed the 'hello' part into 'yo' as that was how I greeted everyone at the time (actually, once I stormed into class where a couple of my friends were sitting and the teacher and shouted 'yo' a little bit too hard, which earned me a very strange look from the teacher :P hence it stuck in my brain as well). My account name on Deviantart and CGsociety is precisely the same, I just translated my original email adress from Dutch to English. I thought it might be usefull to keep some sort of consistency, even though I'm not all that active on the other sites.
I haven't changed my e-mail address ever since and I'm still using it to correspond with my professional contacts as well, and I don't feel ashamed or immature for it. If people can't take a joke or take it all too seriously I can't help it.

Satyrane
January 19th, 2008, 10:47 AM
Satyrane is the name of a character from Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queen. The character himself is a foil to the main character, a knight named Redcrosse. Satyrane is half-satyr, half-man and is a defender of the massive forest through which Redcrosse traverses. In the story, he is supposed to be as brave and as skilled as Redcrosse, but can still only be a pretender to a knightly title because he does not believe in God.
I always really liked the character and have resolved to make him the avatar for my posts here as soon as I accrue enough skill to make a good portrait.

My history teacher used to call me renegade in school, i forgot why, but then started using it to play warcraft 3 with my friends and ramdomly online, it fits me rather well.
89 is just the year i was born, renegade was taken in msn, when i opened an account it asked me to change it, so i just added my birthdate (8-8-89), i dont use that account no more, or pretty much any, since i dont like messenger too much, but i still always add the 89, i kinda got fond with it :P.

Mine comes from part of a pen-name that I'd like to use on novels and other projects. Can't figure out the last name for it, but I like the sound of Kasey. As for the Krazy part, well I'm not really crazy; but with all my interests (music, drawing, comics & graphic novels, cartoons, live action stuff, voice acting, visual effects, novels, short stories, overall, any aspect of every medium for storytelling) someone just might think I'm crazy but I'm not too sure lol
As far as spelling each part with a K goes, well Ks are just kool to me =D

February 17th, 2008, 12:13 AM
I got mine back during highschool from my friends. It is more a reference to certain character from the TMNT series ;) than for skill at all. So after such time it kinda stuck around and makes it easier for people to remember it since I am victim of having a very common name, which is still a good thing too.

misscritter
February 19th, 2008, 04:11 PM
I'm new here!
I've always had a fascination with monsters and small, weird animals. Therefore, critter. I was originally "aricacritter". Then one day, someone IMed me saying, "Um, Miss Critter?" And it just stuck.
I wanted to be Miss Monster, but that's been taken by a very talented artist.
Rist
February 19th, 2008, 04:16 PM
At the time I was studying anatomy and wanted something that was part of the human body, but was spelled a little different, thus Rist instead of Wrist.
Names in the past have been:
Penance = From FINAL FANTASY X
Fl3wk = People in call of duty 2 used to call me fluke, so i figured why not call myself it as a nickname. Found the name seemed childish and 'l33t' so I changed to what I have now, which is Rist.
BTW, I find this topic very boring...

"SugaCrcl" is actually spelled "Suga Circle". It's the street in NC where I grew up on and lived for the past 20 years (im 25). Regulars pronounce it as, "Sue-gah". Visitors will say, "Sugar" or "Shuug-gah", when they come over for a cookout.
